THE ARKANSAS (AND KENTUCKY) DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY RESULTS THREAD
— CAC

I couldn't think of anything more original.
So tonight we see if President Barack Obama actually loses a state primary. Not just any state, the home of his party's last President.

Results will be updated in the thread.
Kentucky is already rolling in now.

KY: Obama 59% Uncommitted: 41% (74% reporting)---CAC's easy call: Obama misses embarrassment by this much.

Arkansas: Obama 60% Wolfe 40% (58% in)

Reminder- there is 2 weeks left until the Wisconsin recall vote. We will have full coverage here on AOSHQ with live results, mostly ahead of the AP and others. We will have coverage of the LtGov recall and State Senate recalls as well.

69 This year is turning out to be as delightful as the Jimmy/Walter/Dukakis non-election years, only with many other really great, amazing folks out there, too, like Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Allen West, Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin .... And other great things ... like genuine conservatives who review movies (Nolte, Ace) ... Extraordinary genuine conservative intellectuals (Sowell, VD Hansen) ... Mamet, Lovitz .... Etc etc etc. It is a season to be optimistic. Our cup is flowing over. The OLD OLD Paradigm is falling, victim of the truth. I truly believe in two things: Mittens will get Obamacare repealed, and Miguel Estrada will be on the Supreme Court.

1) To avoid weird formatting (eg. breaks in the middle of a line and hidden HTML code) copy everything into MS notepad first, clean up any unwanted line breaks and then cut or copy it from there into the comment box.

2) For italics, bold, strike through and underline, do a search for BBCode and follow the instructions. Use brackets: [ ] instead of sideways carets: < >. Italics, bold, strike through and underline are the only codes accepted here. The commands for them are i, b, s and u, respectively.

3) The URL box (above the comments box) will accept just about any URL except TinyUrls. It probably will kick out other shortened URLs too, however, because I've never tried any other shortened URLs in the box I really don't know. Anything in the URL box that contains HTML coding will be rejected.

4) The name box will only accept names, do not try using HTML code in it.

Four simple rules that, if followed, will produce flawless posts that won't get rejected. The only screw up you can make is forgetting to close your tags.

101 I'm fairly certain that the moment I post this, another thread will go up, but here goes. I just received this email from CNET:

Have you ever had the experience of having a hybrid car creep up on you without you even knowing it? I have! And while there are plenty of hybrid cars driving around in my area, it's still pretty eerie to me how quiet these cars are at low speeds.

Well, apparently these hybrid vehicles are so quiet that it's reported they are 37 percent more likely to hit pedestrians and 66 percent more likely to hit cyclists than their gas-guzzling counterparts, because folks just don't hear them coming. I'm wondering whose fault that is? Car or pedestrian? Now I can just see the news stories in the near future: "With more hybrid cars on the road, we drastically reduce our carbon footprint, but we also manage to decrease our population." So, how do you solve this problem?

Well, according to a recent blog from CNET blogger Chris Matyszczyk, "Do Hybrid Cars Kill You With Silence?", soon the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration will begin creating guidelines for the minimum amount of noise a car engine can emit in hopes of decreasing accidents! You heard right, making these quiet cars generate noise so people will be aware of them. Isn't that just crazy? Should we be blaming the car for being too quiet or should we be blaming the people who don't pay attention to their surroundings? You have to read this blog and when done, tell us what you think of this issue.

Cheers!
-Lee

Not that anyone else in here cares but Hal Rogers' district chief of staff, Chris Girdler, is running for Kentucky State Senate in District 15. It is an enormously Republican district so whoever wins the primary tonight will represent the area. He's currently up 700 votes but it is a much closer race than anyone around here expected as he spent over 100k compared to a little over 5k for his major competition, Mark Polston.

I absolutely hate Hal Rogers and refuse to vote for anybody associated with him so it would make my night, even more than seeing Obama losing a state, if Girdler lost.

105 Have you ever had the experience of having a hybrid car creep up on you without you even knowing it?

-----------

The obvious answer is ringtones. Some standard location in the car where you can insert an SD card or thumb drive with an MP3 on it. Loudspeakers mounted under the front bumper. The car plays sounds from the thumb drive as it drives around.

That way, you can download a nice V8 rumble from the net for your Prius. Or a nice fweem if you're into bugs.

153 dagny,

I was once slipped a "post-it-note" during Mass asking me to take communion to an old guy at the hospital.  What an honor it turned out to be.  Back in the 70s, extraordinary ministers were commissioned by the bishop.  He was one of the first.  He was so grateful.  It was either mother's day or father's day and he was disappointed that he could not be there at the Golden Corral with the rest of the family.  He was the patriarch of a huge family in this region.  He was a loving man and every one of his children and grandchildren are wonderful folks.

Truly, I am blessed to have given him the bread of Life.

184 I'm an Arkansan, and I just got back from voting.

Rick Crawford, the first Republican rep here in the First District since reconstruction, ran unopposed, but on the Democratic side there's a battle between Clark Hall, the good ole' boy candidate, and Gary Latanich, an economics professor at Arkansas State University, where I attend.

Latanich is a Keynesian socialist who is actually running on a platform that balancing the budget would have disastrous results for the economy. I don't think he'll win the primary because he lacks the money and organizational support from Arkansas Democrats. Hall has the money and support, and though he'll likely get the nomination I doubt he'll be able to beat Crawford in November.

Crawford has Tea Party/Americans for Prosperity support, and many Arkansans are starting to realize that the Democratic Party is full of socialists. Even conservatives in the south oftentimes vote Democratic, but over the past few years that's started to change.

On another note, I imagine I'm one of the few local college students who voted Republican. Even in a place like rural Arkansas the college students are pretty damn liberal. Hopefully most of them didn't vote.

Let me put my thinking cap on.  Our son is due to complete his deployment late August/early Sept.  Of course, he won't come here right away, he'll go back to his duty station.  Then he wants to rent a beach house on Tybee Island with a buddy for a week.

In the south.  Everybody wears them around the house.  I put on a real shirt if I have to go shopping.

Only guys who can't do much else climb mountains that others have already climbed.  Real adventurers might climb a mountain or two, but just to get past it and find something new on the other side.

It's an odd type that gets a thrill out of just climbing a mountain whose virgin days are long gone.  That's more like just physical exercise than anything involving adventure, which is fine for what it is.

A few. I think most conservative students stay quiet, though, especially in class.

The campus newspaper is particularly entertaining. There was a gay dude from Wisconsin who wrote weekly pieces about how the south wants to control everyone's behavior (i.e. gay marriage laws)... while at the same time advocating gun control and universal healthcare. They didn't bother reporting about the incident when Nonie Darwish came to campus to warn students about radical Islam. All the Muslim students walked out when she claimed that Coptic Christians are being killed in Egypt. The paper did run an article about the evils of "Islamophobia," though.

Okay, but what do you do when the sweat gets all hard and you get a crusty part in your t-shirt after multiple wearings.

Posted by: elizabethe at May 22, 2012 08:25 PM (A1f1d)

I think that crusty shit is caused by beer.....beer sweat.

It's the same color as beer, so I figure that's what it is....beer sweat + deodorant.

....I don't get it in my clothes, and I don't drink beer.

It doesn't happen in the kid's clothes. ....But it happens in my husband's tee shirts.

And nothing will get that stuff out.

315 238 OK, technically "wife beaters" are the sleeveess undershirt". Tank tops are a sleeveless "T-shirt".

*********************

Come on, people!  Really?

A sleeveless T-Shirt is a regular t-shirt with no sleeves sewed on the shoulder.

A wife beater is an "A-Shirt" (keep in mind that I don't name them) which is, as someone noted above, made out of ribbed cotton and has very thin straps (?) over the shoulder.

A tank top is about the same as a wife beater except, as someone again noted above, it is not made of the heavily-ribbed cotton and is usually made in faggy colors.

There is also a muscle shirt, which is wider across the shoulder than a wife beater or tank top, but is not as wide as a sleeveless T.  Also, the arm holes are usually very large to make sure everyone can fully admire your underarm hair.

Just wondering. How can you recover near 24k gold from 14k to 18k gold. Especially when it may be alloyed with copper, nickel or platinum?

Two scenarios I can imagine:

1) Dissolve the gold alloy in aqua regia, precipitate out the other metals chemically and then purify the gold through electrolysis.

2) Dissolve the gold alloy in aqua regia and go directly to electrolysis.

As a chemist, what's your guess?

Not "color-safe bleach" apparently. The reason it's "color-safe" is because (and I'm pulling this one outta my asshole) it's not a strong oxidant -- which is what liberates the chlorine gas.

The survivors don't have the energy to recover the bodies, so they're left where they died.  Makes for  somber  ascents while walking past the dead.

434 What a lot of people don't realize is how big Texas is.

It takes 2 days to drive across Texas.

Rhodes Island?  A half an hour.  Illinois? a couple of hours.  Ohio? 2-3 hours.

California?  San Diego to Yuma : 3 hours max.

Texas?  1 day and a half.

Yeah, and the fucking x ray ruined most of the film at our LAST check in. I was using Ektapress 800 and 1600. Not much to take on the hike except the summit pictures.

When my grad school GF went to Greece I bought her a lead bag to put her film into to protect them from X-rays. Manufactured by Kodak. I'll bet somebody still makes them.

437 I am originally from Kentucky's First District as a matter of fact my younger sister's father-in-law was the Democratic Congressman there until the GOP sweep of 94 it flabbergasts me that a Democratic sitting President is losing in places like Graves County to Uncommitted by 34.72% to   65.28%

438 I exaggerated slightly on the RI thing.  San Diego County is bigger than RI and it take about an hour and a half to cross it going east.

439 What?  No porters to do the shlepping?

440 Texas? 1 day and a half.

Meh, the first time I did it was non-stop.  Drove into TX on I-20 at about 5pm, hit El Paso as the sun was coming up.  Went from Atlanta to Phoenix stopping only for gas and food.  34 hours by myself.  Not smart, now I limit my runs to about 18 hours max.

441 Just read on Roll Call that Thomas Massie, a Tea Party favorite, beat out the Republican establishment choice for the nomination in KY04. So all the stories the last few weeks about the death of the Tea Party are true, right?

And never mind that with 31% of the vote in, they cannot call AR for Obama.  Or that Cotton, the tea party favorite in AR-04, looks to be avoiding a run-off with 32% of the district reporting.

Nope.  The Tea Party is as dead as whatever unfortunate woman happens to be near a Kennedy.

443 Putter- love that last line! I'm really rooting for Tom Cotton. I live in MN and received my disappointment last week when Pete Hegseth didn't win the primary. Tonight's primaries partially make up for it- the DEM primaries, that is. Can't stop giggling!!

444 Congratulations to President Obama on his decisive, double-digit victories over Mr. Wolfe of Arkansas and Mr. Uncommitted of Kentucky.

445 If we can convince Romney to change his name to "Willard Uncommitted", then Obama may have a real shot in November.

Posted by: Hayabusa at May 22, 2012 06:44 PM (B+qrE)

446 with 75% of the vote in AR:
Obama 76,241 (59%)  Wolfe 52,838  (41%)

447 "Missed it by that much" - which turns out to be on the order of 35,000 votes out of 210,000 cast in Kentucky. But leave aside the belly laughs & guffaws (over 'might might have been'), why are 30,000 more Kentuckians showing up at the (almost certainly completely pointless) state D presidential primary, than at the (quite possibly just as completely pointless) state R presidential primary? That's 30,000 - out of a total pool of 390,000 folks in Kentucky apparently unable to resist the temptation of flexing their franchise in utterly meaningless exercises of ritual democracy. For the D incumbent - the schvartze.

448 Humph. As if the troglodytes and cousin-fuckers in these states would ever vote for Our President in the general. Who cares?

Where have you gone, Gene McCarthy?  Some others of you may be old enough to remember back in '68 when LBJ was running basically unoppossed in the Dem primaries and won the New Hampshire primary with Eugene McCarthy getting 42% of the vote.  It was considered such a catastrophic performance that LBJ dropped out and an opportunistic chancer named Robert Kennedy (carpetbagging Senator "from" New York) suddenly decided he could become president and threw his hat into the ring.  Now that BHO has won 3 Democratic primaries in which he lost over 40% of the Democratic voters to an out of state incarcerated felon, a political nobody from Arkansas, and literally (to quote Joseph F. Biden) nobody, who amongst the Democrats can be thinking of doing a Kennedy?

The obvious answer would be another well known carpetbagging ex-Senator "from" New York.  I have heard some people wondering whether BHO might drop JFB as his running mate and add HRC, but I think the greater possibility would be that HRC might see her chance and take it now.  For her to agree to be BHO's running mate in what the Dems have pretty much shown is going to be a campaign of personal attacks on Romney, his business career, his religion, his family, his wife's recreational activities, etc. would be a stunningly bad career move for her (although taking the job of SecState was not a brilliant move on her part either, IMHO).

If an actual nationally known Democratic politician had decided to challenge BHO for the nomination (think HRC, Wesley Clark or even Dennis Kucinich) one can just imagine they would be doing pretty well at the moment.  I don't think it is even too late at this point for someone to jump in and make a charge for the convention.  Probably not going to happen, since the Dems main line of argument seems to be if you oppose BHO you are a stinking racist, so they are not going to give up that canard easily.

Which leaves the only possibilty being to convince BHO that he is going to be taken to the woodshed in November, and be remembered by posterity in the same light as Jimmy Carter.  His narcissistic self-image would probably not be able to survive such a traumatic event, so if enough of the Democratic hierarchy came to the conclusion that not only is BHO going to go down the drain, but he is going to take down the Senate with him, they might just make him an offer he can't refuse.  He is guaranteed a high 6 to 7 figure income pretty much for life, and he would have even more time to devote to golfing with out the occasional distraction he has to put up with now.  Unlike most past presidents, he can spend the rest of his days from his office at Harvard or wherever he ends up landing penning op-eds about how the current Prez is doing things all wrong, and what he would be doing instead.
