PSA: I'm going to have to into silent-running mode for the next week or so, my groovy babies. I have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. This means no DOOM, no Sunday book thread, and less traffic on the Twitter feed.
Think of this hiatus as a way to reconnect to your inner optimist, without the constant drum-beat of DOOM to distract you.

Talking about this at a family gathering this weekend, my more liberal brother (as opposed to the other, only liberal brother) suggested, with a straight face, that I buy a Volt. After I was done laughing, I explained (quite calmly, I thought) that a Volt wouldn't even get me half-way to work every day. Without missing a beat, he then suggested a Prius.
Luckily the subject changed at that point: I think my dad saw my ears turning red.

I feel your pain, Allen. The extended commute was really the last straw for me at the old gig 18 months ago.
Being IT types who support users in other buildings using apps served from servers in still other buildings there was no reason we couldn't do a rotating one day at home a week for every member of the team.
We presented it to our team lead. We were asked to put together a proposed schedule with Monday and Friday not at-home days for anyone on a 6 person team. We managed since at the time most every app had a primary and a backup across the 6.
When it went higher up we were shot down.
That was when I knew there was no hope of that employer ever being reasonable.

Sans sandals, we do have people who come in with that look every great once in a while.
We're the "Corporate" office, so we're supposed to dress up better than some of the regional/satellite offices, but we don't actually have any clients who ever come by, so it's usually pretty relaxed here in the IT group.

Even though the national gasoline average price is still 10% below the record-high $4.12/gal hit in 2008, the steady rise through early 2012 is sparking renewed fears that we're in for another pounding at the pump. What's most concerning is that this rise is unprecedented in that we've never ever seen gas prices this high at this early point of the calendar year. Peak demand comes with the peak summer driving season, thus we seasonally hit peak prices mid-year.
Politicians of all stripes, including President Obama, are seizing the moment and addressing the public ire with plans and proposals that might sound good, but will likely have little effect on price for years to come. The question is will the rising cost of gasoline derail our economic recovery?
Yahoo is trying its hand at comedy. The rising gas prices drowned out the economy is improving propaganda and now the MFM is trying to find a way to spin it

If you're not massaging the hardware, I don't know of any reason to work at "work," except to be seen as a hero problem solver. That issue might be able to be addressed with a user feed back screen on the trouble log.
One can be online with the apps and the user from home, no?
I am just a lit major who fell into the trap of firing the in house sys developers and app maintainence staff because they couldn't develop a plan to go to lunch without great gnashing of teeth. Whenever a user group asked for - and was charged for - an app that would do ABC they would get, 3 years later, an app that did XYZ. We hired an outside contractor who did everything but massage the hardware and run the user support group. This was in 1989. So. I'm probably full of shit.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Economists are increasingly confident that some pillars of the U.S. economy will improve this year, but they still remain cautious in their expectations on the overall pace of economic growth.
The National Association for Business Economics
said Monday that forecasters have raised their expectations for
employment, new home construction and business spending this year. But
they held on to their average prediction that America's gross domestic
product, or GDP, will grow at a rate of 2.4 percent. That's a slight
improvement from 2011, when economists believe the economy grew 1.6 percent. Final economic growth numbers for 2011 are due out Wednesday.
No mention of the chocolate ration comrades, but I'm sure it will increase too. It's just amazing all of the positive economic news that is coming out now. I wonder what could be causing it?

I'm hoping maybe they show back up. The one who had been an outside cat the longest vanished as soon as we let him out of the truck. He sort of freaked out at being put in there.
The other two hung around.
We last saw the one we had moved to outside the next day. She wasn't seen after that.
The youngest who had been outside a couple of weeks hung around until about this past Thursday and hasn't been seen since.
I feel awful for not getting a pet-friendly rental but those are few and far between.

My son and I came home from church one day this past January and found our beloved marmalade Achilles lying in a pile of leaves in front of the house. We thought he had been hit by a car. We rushed him to the Emergency Animal Hospital, where the vet said he was having congestive heart failure and the most humane thing to do was to end his suffering.
It turns out, Achilles was kind of the boss cat who was keeping the other three in line. Since he died, the two females have been at each other's throats. One of them retreated to my bedroom and refuses to leave... ever. She would be starving herself to death if I wasn't putting food in my bathroom for her. The other female thinks she is the alpha cat now and has been asserting her dominance throughout the homestead. The other male just doesn't want to deal with the two females and spends most of his time outdoors. He's also started begging for food at the table, which he never did when Achiles was around.

I briefly had a job where a hybrid made sense. The total distance from my home (then an apartment) to my job was about 10 miles, and it was stop-and-go traffic that never made it above about 15 mph. That's almost exactly what a hybrid is designed for.
Now? Not so much. I'm going about 75 mph most of the way. A turbo-diesel (even Americanized) or sub-compact is better from an operation cost standpoint. And I hate small cars.

I would be glad to switch to an electric golf cart to take care of local errands provided the local authorities did a few things:
1. Ban cars and trucks from driving in the same roads as the golf carts.
2. Allow me to drive it w/o it being taxed to damn death.
And electric golf cart will go about 35 miles on a charge. If you get a solar panel attachment it will extend the range to 50 miles. Plus it will charge while it is sitting in the parking lot. And if I am not mistaken, the overwhelming majority of people driving is done in less than 10 miles from home.

In my case it was strictly a culture thing. Several years back we lost the ability to forward our desk phones out to a cellphone.
Learned from a friend in telecom this happened because someone (not in IT) in corp HQ did it and a senior exec wanted to turn an e-mail discussion they were having into a face to face.
Showed up unannounced in his cube and found he'd done the forward thing. The ability was then yanked company wide.
This was the culture of the place before the Spainards took over. It got worse under them. I should have bolted two years before I did.

In a twisted way that will be a gift for the Right. Just like Leehman's collapse brought Obama in power, an economic collapse would lead to a Republican victory. I don't mind paying $5 a gallon gas if it means Obama's defeat.

Besides the SEAL ethos that demands keeping secrets even from family members, it was easy to understand their reluctance.
“These guys have been so misrepresented by Hollywood, it’s crazy,” McCoy said. “They’re not these twisted-up Rambo-Terminator dudes. They’re good family men and really intellectual, smart and down to earth and incredibly humble.”

It depends totally on how they define "life expectancy". The normal number you see is total life expectancy average from birth to death. The actual age at which people die after reaching age 65 when they are eligible really hasn't changed that much over the years.
The "increase in life expectancy" killing SS is a myth. What is killing SS is SSDI. Until they do something with the fraud and abuse in that system they will all go bankrupt.

Wanna know why that greasy fuck is sucking up to the JEF?
"Warren Buffett, who controls the biggest shareholding of the No. 1 U.S. mortgage lender, said banks were victimized by some homeowners who refinanced their loans before getting evicted.
Large numbers of people who have ‘lost’ their house through foreclosure have actually realized a profit because they carried out refinancings earlier that gave them cash in excess of their cost”
Yup, he's pushing that slap on the wrist for the robosigning fraud penalty behind the scenes.
What's even more sickening is that what he is whining about is the exact same thing he has done over and over to get rich--buy cheap, suck a few dollars out, then sell.
Damn that fucker is in a race, neck and neck, with Soros to be the biggest piece of shit in the world.

@26
Why waste my time? They know where I stand, I know where they stand. They don't like it much when I laugh at them, but there isn't much they can do about it. It's pretty well agreed upon that I'm the most well-grounded, logically speaking, of my brothers, so neither of them want to argue with me.
Here's a constructive (and fun) alternative to arguing: predict what will happen next in a given situation.
Predictions are how I converted my softly liberal wife into a conservative. "You were right. How did you know that?" After saying that any number of times, she realized that my view corresponded more closely with reality than the liberal one.
In my experience, liberals can never do this, because they live in a fantasy world. They seem destined ever to be astonished by developments that grownups expected all along.
The downside is that the predictions take time (sometimes decades) to become reality.
