6 Won't run on television. The good ones never do. Will probably drive some traffic / $$ to the AFP website, so they can run the 1000th ad on outsourcing to China or the debt that not a single undecided voter cares about.

I disagree, I think it is a great ad, I just wish it would go on TV, I don't think it will.

The best ads at the end of campaigns cut through the clutter and grab the viewers attention.  "Bear in the Woods" in 1984 and "Wolves" in 2004.

22 I don't like it either. Focuses on feelings over facts. 34 14, thanks for the heads up. Down here in Florida Romney's finally up on the air, but it's the same debt ad 24/7. I'm sure it's been focus grouped to death, but how many undecided voters do you know whose main issue is the debt? Only salvation is that Obama's ads down here are the baffling ones trying to assuage the Token's ego after getting humiliated at the debate, by saying "Romney lied." They are clearly slapped together in haste and are incomprehensible. A former Bush campaign guy on Twitter, who has been plenty harsh on Romney, called it political malpractice. That's what narcissism will do to you.

37 The reason it is a great ad is because it hits emotions not facts.  We are inundated with numbers, huge giant unbelievable numbers.  Eventually you tune them out, you don't see their meaning.

This commercial puts a face on what 7.8% and 14.7% really means.

It's a good ad, I bet it focus groups off the charts.

Posted by: soothsayer at October 07, 2012 02:17 PM (vzLhi)

44 One advantage of it being a silent ad is that if they do take it to the national airwaves the silence will cause people to look at their TVs to make sure that the signal wasn't lost., since silence is usually a sign of something being wrong with the station or the TV itself. Once they're looking, they'll probably keep watching.

55 As others have pointed out you have to pay attention to what is on everyone's plate and what is missing from it: Meat. As someone that was 10-14 years old under the Carter Administration, watching my father scramble for loads (he was an owner-operator of a truck) and going some days without any meat to eat, this ad brings those days back with a vengeance. There was many a day when the dinner table in our house was just like that where my father had that same look on his face: I'm trying as best I can there is just not enough work. Then there was the rest of us looking back at him. Trust me this ad will resonate with anyone that went through that in '79 and with those going through it today.

60 ~ tap tap tap tap tap ~ Hello all you zombies, it is I - Hadji! - the comic who has been to hell and back, when hell is various parts of the Catskills ... and the bazaars of Tunisia. Let me tell you - hell is other people. So the ace of the spades does not like the advertisement for Romney. I am not surprised. Hadji has seen this before - Heterosexual expressions that also include children can make some people uncomfortable. If the ad were to have two busty lesbians in pornographic display with a large quantity of Star Wars posters in the background, the ace would be rapt. Rapt, Hadji tells you. Rapt. But Hadji is here for the jokes - so Hadji leaves you with the ha-ha. What is the difference between a Clint Eastwood RNC speech and the entire oratorical career of Joe Biden? Clint Eastwood's speech had the effect. Thank you thank you thank you. Tip your waitresses and give alms to the needy. .

61 31 Do people actually eat at the dining room table anymore? I haven't even sat at mine in years. Posted by: Mo the Girl at October 07, 2012 06:13 PM (O/Mo3) Yes, we do. And this ad is great because it's something I actually recognize. We have gone through several periods of similar dinners during this depression. There have been periods where I actually felt guilty going to the grocery store because even though we needed to feed our kids, we really didn't have the money to spend. We have had many a meal over the past four years where our protein was beans or Vienna sausages (which was a once or twice a month treat). I thank God every day that we're not struggling like that right now, but we are never comfortable, and always waiting for the next dry spell at work that means we go back to stretching those dollars as far as we can. It sucks, but I most definitely "get" this ad. And it hits home hard.

Posted by: Mandy P. at October 07, 2012 02:21 PM (qFpRI)

62 Works for me.

If facts and figure by themselves swayed the majority of voter Obama would never have been elected President, and would stand no chance now.

Leaves me with the impression of "We'd better get jobs going again so this poor woman doesn't say something stupid that will get her beaten by this frustrated gorilla... in front of her children, no less." <<<<< Jeez, you are overthinking that one way too much. It's not about the woman. It's about the man. It's his face that shows the hint of shame. Hers is worried compassion. He's the one out of work. The ad plays in particular to blue-collar voters (note the plaid shirt and unshaven face), which are a big deal in Ohio where we really need to pull ahead. As for feelings over facts, the facts are stated quite succinctly at the end of the ad. Facts without feelings don't win elections - nor should they. People don't want jobs because they want to improve an emotionless statistic from the BLS. They want jobs because they want the dignity of being able to provide for their families. This ad states a simple fact and personalizes the hell out of it. I think it's dynamite. That said, I'd love to know what Ace doesn't like about it. He may be seeing something I'm not.

Posted by: Caiwyn at October 07, 2012 02:21 PM (pR28l)

This is fantastic.  Aside from the 67 million people who saw the debates, even more heard about it.  Obama ads claiming R lied look like sour grapes, a petulant childish retort.  People will know O is lying to them, just lashing out; flailing about.  It makes O look worse, and takes away any pity people might have begun to feel by him getting his ass whipped.

81 Ace, you're not a long-term unemployed with kids. It can't affect you like it affects me. These are desperate Depression-Era people. Only, the Depression is today. No, it's not a logical commercial. But logical commercials don't win campaigns. (Actually, no commercials win campaigns, not even Daisy. But they point voters in one direction or another.) These people, the ones in this ad, are about to explode with shame and disgust. And the children are going to be fucked up for life. Because the wrong guy is president. This ad is perfect. It should be on throughout the rust belt, WI, and MN every day.

108 84 I think the same message is better relayed -- without the artifice -- in direct-address interviews by Obama voters, now out of work, and looking for a change. Why not interview the real McCoy? ---- Sorry, but whenever I see a "regular person" interviewed by or presented by a campaign, I spend most of my time wondering what the catch is. I never believe they are regular people. I always believe they are somehow connected to the campaign or are partisan hacks like the union cancer wife guy. Frankly, iirc both campaigns have had major oopsies when they've used what are supposed to be regular people. So with 40 people, you'd have the vet the heck out of each one or else Obama would.

"Levi Russell, a spokesman for Americans for Prosperity, said the ad is
being promoted on Hulu, YouTube and through Google and other search
engines. He said it would likely be used on television before Election
Day. He did not provide a dollar amount behind the ad push. AFP also
linked to it on its Twitter accounts."

Posted by: Tami at October 07, 2012 02:34 PM (X6akg)

113 I don't know, Ace....if you look at most ads these days, political or otherwise, they assault you immediately with an overload of video, and audio, (Not to mention that they like to jack audio levels up a good 3 db). A sudden, and unusual silence in place of the expected screeching harpies trying to sell you dish soap is bound to attract curious attention, and without a single word spoken, the ad does convey it's brutal message with an efficiency that sets it apart from the usual political fodder that litters our airwaves.

Sometimes different is good, and in a land of noise, silence stands out.

118 >>I think the same message is better relayed -- without the artifice -- in direct-address interviews by Obama voters, now out of work, and looking for a change. They've done that. AFP is the group responsible for all the ads showing disappointed '08 Obama supporters who now say they are going to vote for Romney because Obama has failed. They spend over $7 million on that campaign alone. This is a different twist. How many political ads have you ever seen that don't say a word? Nothing. Just a visual that every single person seems to understand. Different ads target different people. This one goes right after the guy who is out of work and feeling a little desperate.

Posted by: Truman North at October 07, 2012 02:37 PM (I2LwF)

122 37 The reason it is a great ad is because it hits emotions not facts. We are inundated with numbers, huge giant unbelievable numbers. Eventually you tune them out, you don't see their meaning. This commercial puts a face on what 7.8% and 14.7% really means. It's a good ad, I bet it focus groups off the charts. Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 07, 2012 06:15 PM (dX4hn) I don't always trust focus groups on this stuff. When you ask people to pay close attention to this political ad, it skews their opinion. A better method would be to observe people from across the backyard in thier own homes than when a political ad comes on call them up and ask they are voting for . You'd also need to call them the day before to get a baseline.

143 It's not "over-subtle" in my opinion.

I'm a married father of three, and the idea of losing my job and not being able to provide for them is stomach wrenching.

You can see the anguish on Mom and Dad's faces.  His shame, her "we'll get through this, but I don't know how at the moment" look.  The kids know there are real problems and that Mom and Dad are scared.  This makes them scared, but they're too hungry to care.

There's little furniture in the background, and the room seems small for them.

It's the subtlety that makes it SO strong.  Your mind fills in the gaps with the empathy for the family.

188 My dad was out of work some during the Carter years but me and my sisters were pretty oblivious to the impact on my parents. Many years ago, when I was in my 30's, my dad told me during that time he'd lie in bed when everyone else was asleep, worried about to support us.  I felt awful, picturing his silent suffering, and realizing how unaware I was at the time.  I was grateful to know that had been many years prior and my dad was fine.  This ad reminded me of that time.  I think it's powerful because it taps into the feelings from past hard times as well as the current conditions, so it affects even more people.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only two times, since 1960, has the unemployment dropped by 0.5 percentage points in a two month span.

The first time this happened was in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan (April & May, 1984). The rate went from 7.7 to 7.2. The total jobs created during this 2 month span was 687k. The GDP for the most recent quarter was a whopping 8%.

The only other time (in over 50 years, again) is occurring right now under President Obama (Aug & Sep, 2012). The rate went from 8.3 to 7.8, with a two-month job total of only 256k (128k per month). The GDP for the most recent quarter is a recession-like 1.25.

Think about that again. In over 50 years, starting with President John F. Kennedy, only twice has the unemployment rate dropped by 0.5 percentage points within a 2-month span.

And we are to believe that one of those times is happening right now - under a president with the worst jobs record in history, one month before the most important election of our time – all with a backdrop of anemic GDP and job creation. Oh, and when Obama conveniently needed to get to 7.8% to "break even."

219 Here's something that's not too cutesy for ace: Background music: a pipe organ playing circus music A guy wearing a smilin' Obama mask taking a sledge hammer over and over to watermelons and pumpkins marked "ECONOMY" Then that image gets reduced to the top-fourth portion of the screen while the rest of it shows him bowing to foreign dictators Pull that imagin to to the top left corner while a list of broken Obama promises scrolls at lightning speed on the bottom half of the screen, then send it to the bottom right corner On the bottom left, a Michael-Bay-inspired montage of explosions and dirty brown people interspaced with images of 9/11. Then the whole screen shrinks up into the top right quadrant, with the other brew quadrants showing video of: the occupoopers, the southern border being infiltrated by more dirty brown people, and Obama and his team partying. All of these will have full-volume audio competing. Then the whole screen pulls up to the top-right 9th is the screen, with the other eight segments showing newscasts either praising Obama or talking about the lousy economy, except for one box which has a guy mooning you with "Obama" written across his ass. All the while, there are overlays of various factoids zooming across the screen in all directions. Finally, the whole thing pulls pack to show its actually the insides or Romney's smiling mouth, and he's just about to kiss a baby dressed in patriotic clothing and holding two lighted sparklers. Totally up aces alley.

289 I disagree ace.  Like others upthread I find this perhaps the most unsettling ad I've ever watched (too young for "Daisy" I guess).  It's like a literal (and not like a "Joe Biden 'literal'") slap in the face.  I keep watching it over and over, like a train wreck, and it never loses its punch.  (Those are good actors BTW, and whoever said it's about the husband, not the wife, was right).

There is a place for emotional grabs as well as stats and I think it's great that the Repubs can walk and chew gum, I mean cottage cheese, at the same time.

290 Joe Biden is an accomplished liar and isn't this debate moderated by that chick who hates Ryan? I don't expect a blow-out. But I think Ryan will do fine, land a few punches, and make a good impression. Ryan doesn't have to win. Romney won handily. Ryan just needs to be reassuring and likable. He'll be fine. If he does better than that and Biden really messes up, all the better. But to me it's not necessary.

Speaking of   the  Biden/Ryan Debate....why does everyone assume  idiot Joe will be the  one to hit the emotional  button, whereas  Ryan will only quote facts.  I've seen him talk about passing debt on to   children and talking about his mother.  This is good stuff.  I think he can be effective  in that way too, and if not, he could always just wink and smile at the camera.  That's worth the soccer mom vote.

Who cares what ads run anyway?  Anybody who isn't a died in the wool democrat or government leech is either not voting at all or voting for Romney.  The moderate Obama voters who aren't sure about Obama this time around were just given the blessing they needed to go ahead and vote against him in that debate.  That ass-kicking not only opened up the flood gates for the preference cascade against Obama to begin, but it also showed Romney is a winner, and not just some rich guy playing in politics.  People like to vote for a winner.

342 Why should he feel humiliated if the cocksuckers in DC have made it impossible for him to provide? Serious question...you married? Kids? Because trust me, emberassment is a very real emotion when you're staring not being able to provide for your family in the face. Rage is there too, but the hurt of a husband/father who's worried about providing the basics (let alone the best) for his loved ones is a terrible, and powerful, thing.

Posted by: Jeffrey Quick at October 07, 2012 03:43 PM (0v4Ix)

344 I think it's devastating because it shows the silent suffering going on throughout the country. People are embarrassed to be in the positions they find themselves in. They shouldn't be embarrassed but they are. They did everything right, followed all the rules and they find themselves in this position. They always had a job. They never thought they'd be going through their savings at a record clip. They never ever thought they might lose their home and their car. And the fmily unit is fighting alone. They are telling their kids not to tell anyone that they aren't eating meat anymore. They are only buying clothing for the kids because they grow and because they go to school everyday and need to look like everything is fine with the family. The rain is coming down steadily because it's a metaphor for the economy and for the sentiment of depression, both actual and within hearts and minds. The could have titled the ad "How did we get here? How did this happen to us?" and it would have been just as effective. Probably, were it not for the embarrassment and pride, the people on assistance would have doubled in the last couple of months. You know the country is having a tough time in the reports from retail. All at once in July, people just stopped buying. Yeah, you might replace a worn out pair of pants, a worn out pair of shoes. You might buy a new suit and shirt and tie and dress shoes for the job hunt but that's it. There are no extras, nothing and they are thinking that Christmas is coming and there won't be a normal Christmas this year. It makes you cry.

ErikW, you're right that people react differently to being out of work.  Some people rage at the world or the boss who fired them.  Many others can take government handouts without batting an eye.

But for a lot of people being out of work and not being able to provide for your family feels like a personal failure.  It doesn't matter whether or not it was your fault or whether you gave it your best if you have a family to support.

Posted by: Matt at October 07, 2012 03:55 PM (Ou5cA)

349 Only partly off-topic: Thirty-plus years ago a friend of a friend, a grad student with an insufficient stipend, subsisted almost entirely on Kraft Mac & Cheese without the milk and butter, because he couldn't afford them: just noodles, water, salt, and orange powder. After a few months of this, he ended up in the hospital with scurvy. As my friend reported it, the disease wasn't that bad, but it was really embarrassing to have dozens of doctors stopping by every day, some from miles away, and oohing and aahing over him. None of them had ever seen a case of scurvy, or expected ever to have another chance to see one.

Come to think of it, during the Carter Administration I once had absolutely no money and nothing in the kitchen but a couple of slices of totally stale bread, one egg, a bit of half-sour milk, some old lard, and a tablespoon of even older marmalade. Fortunately, there is one dish you can make with those particular ingredients. Unfortunately, French Toast made from rye bread with caraway seeds is really nasty, with or without marmalade.

Posted by: Dr. Weevil at October 07, 2012 04:01 PM (E3MFP)

350 P.S. My point is not to brag about miserableness of that particular meal. Many others have suffered, and are suffering, worse. My point is that I still remember the taste of that damned rye-bread French Toast, 34 or 35 years later. As others have testified on this thread, poverty and desperation are hard to get over, and impossible to forget.

351 Around the turn of the century, when I was going through a period of sporadic employment, I once cut up some old freezer-burned chorizo and mixed it with oatmeal. It was every bit as tasty as it sounds.

352 I was desperately poor during the Carter administration. Poor to the point of selling my clothing for money to buy Kraft Mac and Cheese to survive.  To this day I cannot eat that stuff.  The grandkids like me to make it but I cannot eat it myself.

353 "But for a lot of people being out of work and not being able to provide for your family feels like a personal failure. It doesn't matter whether or not it was your fault or whether you gave it your best if you have a family to support."

Throw in a federal government that gotten completely out of control, and you begin to feel helpless.

When I was underemployed for two years, I was fortunate because neither myself nor my wife ever tried to live outside our means.  In fact, prior to me being laid off, I refinanced my mortgage to a 15 year loan, and was able to eliminate some of our excess monthly payments.  I also had accumulated a decent amount in my 401K, (which we ended up just about draining in the two years.)  Plus, my wife worked full time.  We didn't hit the stage of despair that a lot of other people around this country have.  But, I'd go to bed some nights and just lie awake worrying I'd never be employed again.  I'm 47 now, and you start wondering if any wants to hire someone at that age.  I went on job interviews, and I'd be told I was over-qualified for a job, or, I'd get asked, could I take working a job where I'd be making less than half what I made in my last job.  And, then, as you are underemployed for longer and longer times, you if people are questioning why you haven't been hired by someone.  You can have any future plans, because you have no idea what's ahead of you.  My wife and I just hunkered down, not even wanting to go to family gatherings, because you just don't want to deal with anyone.

354 <<Another thing is -- if this were a TV ad, which I'm not sure it is -- I don't think people watch TV the same way anymore. Half the time, I'm not watching TV; I have it on in background. The odds of a silent ad pulling my attention up are pretty low, I think.>>

Fair enough, but you run this ad in the right time slot (dinner hour) and a LOT of people are going to either say "That's me" or "That's a family I know."

I think this ad is perfect...akin to the Daisy Ad.

355 When I first moved out on my own, working for minimum wage and having no clue how to stretch a budget, there were a few occasions when all I had left in the way of food was salsa. I'd add water and make soup out of it.

Anyone who's ever been worried about not being able to feed their kids is the target audience. Right now that's about 23 million people.

On the nose....additionally:

Plus the millions more wondering if they'll have a job in the months to come. And the other millions with family and friends unfortunately in the situation depicted in the ad. Oh...and the millions more that have previously lived that gut clenching nightmare.

So sorry it doesn't have brightly colored balloon animals, and a canned laugh track to take the edge off....but this ad shows us just what those 23 million people, and their families are feeling. There's no red, white, and blue bunting, no bands, no free hot dogs for the kiddies. No one shouts out "Cut" at the end of the day. It's a gritty depiction of a reality that millions of us suffer, and you can't paste a grinning smiley face on top of that, and hope to win voters....though Obama is trying to do just that...and he should be encouraged to continue.

357 Uncle Joey is heading for a trap. The huge mistake he's going to make is that he's going to get on a 'Happy Days Are Here Again' narrative. He's going to seize on this bogus unemployment number and go off on a tangent about how awesome it is everywhere for everybody. He's doomed, the poor bastard. And he doesn't even know it. Posted by: runninrebel at October 07, 2012 07:23 PM (N/1Dm) ====== I bet he shows his faux anger that we have been seeing in his stump speeches. I bet he literally says "you lie" to Paul. I do not put it past him.

358 I think you are missing the point on the food. It's a young family. They are trying to give some nutrition. They don't want to give mac and cheese or ramen, their kids will gain weight. They are trying to provide balance, notice the cottage chees is the replacement protein for the meat. A lot of people are probably eating like this. It's what you are still eating before you realize that you have to eat mac and cheese and ramen. Or before the kids get all the food and mom and dad have a cup of tea.

359 PW: Oatmeal is actually one of the cheapest nourishing foods around, as long as you still have gas or electricity to cook it. The only thing it really has to have to be edible is salt, and even milk and sugar are pretty cheap in the amounts needed to make it tasty. It's right up there with Ramen noodles, Mac & Cheese, potatoes, and the $1.29 white bread most grocery chains keep on the bottom shelf for cheap calories. Of course, getting some protein and fat and fiber to go with your carbs is not so easy, though cabbage and onions help with the last.
Here's a recipe someone I used to know learned living on a farm in Poland for a year back in the mid-1970s. (He was getting in touch with his roots and getting some total-immersion language training before going to grad school to study Polish literature. His Irish-American wife was very bored.) Anyway, here's the recipe: Fry up one small onion in a little grease in a large frying pan. When it's sufficiently cooked, fill up the pan with half cabbage and half previously-boiled noodles and fry until done. The onion is necessary to make the whole mess (barely) palatable.

360 Could'a been my grandparents table after 1929. My Dad was 5 when the SHTF. By age nine, in the first year of FDR, he'd picked up a .22 rifle and what he shot over the next 7-8 years of social engineering often was what was for dinner.  Although my GrandDad usually had a job, that money went for other things. Ace, you can't believe how experiencing that period affected the children of those who were part of the 25% marginally employed or unemployed. My Dad was a tightwad frugal, his whole life. It was only at the end of his life that he told his stories about outwitting game wardens - he knew the local fields, woods and marshes better than they and as a kid, hides were easy to find. Sometimes he had to lie low for a few hours. His Depression experience resonated with his kids and I now see some of it in my own son as transmitted second hand by me.
Powerful ad. Should go on commercial TV with the Obungle voiceover at the end about how the private sector is doing fine.

361 I saw an article this morning. He's taking 6 days to prepare for the debate with Ryan. I wonder if he'll have a cheat sheet with the numbers on it or he'll simply play the "I'm older than you and smarter and wiser and you better respect me card" ala the hillary/rick lazio debate? Paul Ryan has a tough job ahead of him.

Not only the unemployeed or underemployed will this be a gut-shot to  -   but also  the employed that are worried about their current jobs. We all know people in this situation, and we all fear being there. adults that were kids during crater remember their parent's plight even if today as adults they aren't this family's situation.

This add hits home for many reasons to many people.

It really needs to run in every swing state.

Very , scarily powerful.

367 My mom could work wonders cooking on a tight budget. I never went hungry as a kid, and I always liked everything she made. I'm sure she went hungry on occasion, but she never told me, not even years later when I found myself feeling a little guilty and asked her about it.

I do remember one time when, out of the blue, she declared to me that she'd rather die than go on welfare. I didn't know what to make of it; it scared me. But it also stuck with me as a powerful lesson in self-sufficiency.

Exactly. Last year, a lot of people were laid off at my place of employment and I tossed and turned at night fearing I would be next. Just the prospect of being laid off - in this economy - was enough to turn me into a wreck. I couldn't eat, I constantly imagined worst case scenarios....This ad hit me right in the gut.

370 AFP or somebody else should do an ad on other ways people are screwed, like actually being able to refinance a mortgage, as opposed to notionally being able to with Chris/Bawney (Dud/Fwank) in effect. Mitt discussed the unintended consequences a little in his beat-down of TFG. I'm going thru the long process of a refi now. The LTV is 16% and I can pay off all my debts including the smallish mortgage without going into retirement funds. I'll get it, but the bankers are pissing themselves because I am self employed and semi-retired. This makes me as suspect as the banksters themselves. I basically work because its something to do, pays the healthcare bill ($24 eff'n K per year) and gives me gas and lunch money. Can't imagine the sleepless nights if LTV was 116% and my family had minimal savings. There are a lot of people who can imagine that because they are living it. Hope'n'change.

371 The fact that I never went hungry until I was an adult makes me appreciate all the more what my mom went through raising me, as well as the fact that during my own hardest times I didn't have someone depending on me.

I think this is a powerful ad.

it's simple, effective and everyone who is a only a couple of paychecks away from homelessness can relate. except for the truly wealthy that's damn near everyone these days.

373 This ad got me even though I wasn't paying attention when I first saw it--had it on as background, pretty much, and took about halfway through for me to suddenly pay attention for the 'oh shit' feeling.  Very strong reaction, too.  Never had that happen with a political ad before.

375 1. The man needs to shave. Razors are cheap, and rainwater is available. 2. The woman needs to wash the clown makeup off her face. Rainwater is available, and she's scaring the children. 3. They're eating. They're dry. The lights are on. What's the beef? 4. The children aren't being annoying. Are they aliens? 5. What are they eating?

Very moving.  I'm a father and have had those kind of moments when the weight of the world is on my shoulders and my loved ones are depending on me.

Yes it is emotional but it is a real emotion from the real world.  Ideas have consequences, especially bad ones.
