The Economy Isn't As Bad as the Numbers Suggest. It's Worse.

So says Mort Zuckerberg, thanks to @rdbrewer4.

We are still almost five million payrolls shy of where we were at the end of 2007, when the recession began. Think about that when you hear the Obama administration's talk of an economic recovery.
The key indicator of our employment health, in all the statistics, is what the government calls U-6. This is the number who have applied for work in the past six months and includes people who are involuntary part-time workersÂ—government-speak for those individuals whose jobs have been cut back to two or three days a week.
They are working part-time only because they've been unable to find full-time work. This involuntary army of what's called "underutilized labor" has been hovering for months at about 15% of the workforce. Include the eight million who have simply given up looking, and the real unemployment rate is closer to 19%.
In short, the president's ill-designed stimulus program was a failure. For all our other national concerns, and the red herrings that typically swim in electoral waters, American voters refuse to be distracted from the No. 1 issue: the economy.

Team Romney's "Buck up, little campers" email (posted below by Drew) is probably right. It has to be remembered than in any contest the other team gets the ball sometimes, and sometimes they score.

They even go ahead sometimes.

It's unreasonable to expect blow-outs, or holding the opponents to zero scoring. Sure, we'd like that. But end of the day, that's just Style Points.

Clinton's touchdown doesn't change the basic fact of the campaign. Yes, apparently the public has been successfully Distracted into focusing on Free Birth Control and Gay Marriage this week. That doesn't mean they'll remain distracted.

I almost think the public appreciated the distraction of the DNC because they don't want to think about the horrors of the Obama economy.

But they will think about that. They maybe just want a couple of weeks off, for pretend-time.

As much as the lib leaning MSM and O would want to change the subject to the horse race of polls post convention, with their "inevitable" strategy (which a lot of you seem to be buying--are you as gullible as the rest of the sheep?), this election hinges on the economy. The only thing I would like is if R and R would focus not only on O's leadership and policy failures, but also on the complete mismatch his ideology is for this country. We are not far left, not even center left--we are center right. Hopefully they will pound this point in the coming days.

Refuses the advice of his own committee's, etc. - so many dems outside politics are disgusted with Obama for so many reasons, some reasons that we support, and others that he hasn't gone far enough left. - Extreme libs like Michael Moore have lost him (at least in words - ppl still listen to this beached whale, and would just assume sit out this election). - Even *some* of the media are fighting back (even if it is to get ratings up - it is a business after all - in a free market economy - whereby they NEED profits to survive). - the media has been called out - new media is rising - Obama's numbers are horrid for a sitting president - look how many visual cues across the country are out there showing an anger and disdain for the potus; "you didn't build that" killed him. It was a decision that President Obama and his team of advisors decided to make at the outset of his presidential term. Faced with very bad economic conditions, the president decided that monetary policy (printing money and infusing it into the economy ) was a better choice than attempting to fix the economy by fiscal policy (in this case, reducing the tax burden on corporations and individuals).

There is no hiding from the facts. His tactic didn't work, and there are no signs that it will. In fact, buried in the most recent economic report out on Friday was a statistic that most people missed but is very troubling: recent M3 data prove that the money supply is growing at a very rapid rate, and this is a leading indicator of inflation.

In keeping with the football analogy, I think another way to look at it would be to say that the two teams are duking it out on the field while all around them the stadium is steadily falling apart because there's no money in the coffers to do basic upkeep and maintenance, let alone renovate. The only people in stands are the diehard fans who turn out for every game regardless of circumstances. The only way you'll get butts in all those seats is the Super Bowl.

106 Okay, we *know* most people don't change their preference like this. I mean, a normal person doesn't listen to Bill Clinton talk for 50 minutes, much less let him persuade them to change from a Romney vote to an Obama vote.

Here's what I've decided has happened: the Obama supporters who weren't sure they were going to vote and were less enthusiastic about him got fired up by the convention. That's the only thing that really makes sense to me. So it's not like Romney lost a bunch of independents in the last week--it's the usual rabble of Obama fools got reinvigorated.

Likewise, we have to stay invigorated. And the election will decide whether there's more of them or more of us.

I don't see Obama winning independents unless Romney just tanks between now and election day (perhaps does terrible in the debates). So it's still going to come down to who gets their base out.

If you consider that a large percentage of new jobs created in the BLS stats are accredited to the birth/death model in their computation, there is the definitive possibility that the "real" number of new jobs created are much lower.

The birth/death equation is reliant, in part, on a normal economic distribution. What we are going thru would be on one of the tails of that distribution and not normal.

A lot of people will vote against Obama but won't talk about it. It's not easy for them to do and they feel no need to discuss it.

Some people still blame Bush, or Corporations, or Rich People, or whatever other bogeymen conjures vague feelings of dislike. I have no idea why Corporations and Rich People would want to have a bad economy where no one can afford to buy their stuff, but apparently they're just stupid and evil like that.

And there are also people who just want to be victims. Taking any responsibility for making things better implies they may have had some responsibility for making things worse. That's why it's important for Romney to remind these folks that they've been lied to and deceived. That means we have to stay and fight, and that means identifying the enemy, which isn't really Obama or other politicians like him, but the people who SUPPORT Obama and politicians like him. Remember this the next time Obama or one of his think-alikes does something totally egregious and insane. Remember that he was ELECTED. His supporters empowered him to act by putting him in office. THEY are the ones who are ultimately responsible, and should be held to account.

This November, don't vote against Obama. Vote against the people who put him in the White House, and remember them in the days and months and years ahead. Remember them the next time some leftard starts spouting their party's line or spews their talking points, and FIGHT. We have nothing to lose but our country.

I think you are on to something. I read the Powerline post about the shift in those who are dependent on the government. Maybe that is part of it but Obama's perception as the cool guy and the MSM glossy over his record is a major contributor.

I was thinking about the last time gas prices had increased. Do you recall the media and political hysteria? There were so many reports on gas prices. Camera crews going to local gas stations interview irate customers. All of my local democratic politicians (all levels) were demanding investigations.

Now what is the difference between then and now? If the media pursued this gas price increases as they did before the 2008 election what do you think that would do to Obama's polling?

It's the idea that I could one day go to the grocery store and the shelves be empty or everything cost 10 times what I'm used to paying.

Look at Detroit. Look at Chicago, where 15 people being shot in a night, many of them random, doesn't even make national news.

We're having copper stripped out of public schools. You can't eat in a fast-food restaurant without someone bothering you for a handout.

Those things didn't used to happen with any regularity at all in my neck of the woods. And now they do.

I talk to teachers who spend almost zero time teaching now.

I don't think we have four more years of luxury to address these things. Romney may not be able to alter our descent for that matter, but if we have a divided government, the only way anything is going to get done is executive fiat. With Obama ruling by decree.

Yeah, that doesn't make me feel too secure.

Nowadays I get to indulge in so little political junky-ism. I'm one of the few lucky ones who has 'lucked' into a decent paying job during this suck-ass economy. But I've also been pulling an average of 12 hours per day. (It's a managerial position that will require this of me for some time to come.) Anyway, I haven't had time to listen to Limbaugh or read Drudge or watch Fox or anything.

So I have to say that I am quite refreshed to come home and read your page see you thinking along the same lines as me. A few posts later in the day, you gave a spectrum-scale of concern blurring into panic. I had come up with slightly different terms but had come to the same conclusion.
Of course it's natural to feel worried based on the current snap-shot of polls. But it is far from time to actually start cognitively worrying about our prospects - let alone feeling the first twinges of panic; let alone dissolving into useless panic. - These are the terms I was thinking in.

I still stand by my prediction that voters will elevate Romney over Obama into the presidency and that moreover Romney will win the popular vote by more than three points.

In the past, I think you've mentioned something like a "Cascading Preferences" effect. - I don't know if you still do, but I still agree with the notion behind this theory. It is not something I suspected would happen in Bush against Kerry or Bush against Gore.

But because every major underlying economic dynamic is firmly positioned against Obama - I believe it is still likely to happen in this election cycle.

As the election decision day draws closer and inexorably closer to the voters, they will become more serious in their thinking and the arguments they will be willing to hear from candidates will become more and more sharply focused.

(Just let Oblahblah dare try to distract with Gay Marriage or Contraception in the closing weeks of this campaign. Not only would those fail as red herrings they would backfire in his out-of-touch face.)

I still contend that when we get down to the wire, there is still a large enough majority of voting Americans who will not tolerate obvious failure on the far reaching and personally sensitive issue of economics/finances. - Especially from a big talker who promised so much and ultimately delivered even less than a little. - He moved us backwards.

When the voters' minds are sharpened into the seriousness required of them by the voting deadline that cannot be denied: I believe they will awaken to their familys' and their friends' and their very futures' best interests.
