The Finah in Carolina: Liveblogging the Final Four
— andy

It's March Madness in January as the freshly-winnowed field of four squares off against Gruntin' John King and whoever CNN can pull in from TNT and Cartoon Network.

Time: 8pm Eastern
Livestream: Somewhere in this vicinity
Minimum blood alcohol content requirement: 0.06

Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.

They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.

Liveblog thingy below the fold.

9 Mitt's not attacking the media because he's making the same error McCain did: "Gee, they seem inclined to like me now. *That will probably continue.*" No. I don't think attacking the media is really a presidential-level concern but I can't argue it's good for politics. It's some populist anger on the cheap.

Governor Romney,

you have in the past donated to Planned Parenthood. How do you square that with being "personally opposed" to abortion?

Also, would you characterize you suppoort of Planned Parenthood as representative of the ways in which you're not bound by the teachings of the Mormon church?

Newt Gingrich's campaign released 2010 tax documents during the CNN debate, reporting $3,142,066 adjusted gross income and paying approximately 31 percent of that amount in federal taxes, or $994,708. Mitt Romney, much of whose income is understood to be from investments and taxed at a lower rate, said on Tuesday his effective tax rate is "closer to the 15 percent rate than anything,"

Having the ability to see something wrong and do something about it are two different things.. believe me I know

That is true, and I've never been delusional about Paul's chances, and I've never been a diehard supporter either. He's 1 old man. I don't claim he's fixing America or anything - but what is the sense in hating on him for it?

None of the other goobers fixed it either. Paul sees it, even though he hasn't accomplished much of anything about it, why should that be a point of hate for him?

Why the hell do republicans attack him on his fiscal conservativism? Call him looney when he defends free markets?

514 The USA has painted itself into a corner. It can't avoid fiscal doom because it has too large a fraction of its population addicted to welfare programs like Social Security, Medicare, etc. Any politician that speaks the truth about where we are and where we are going has zero chance of success. So, we are left with choices ranging from nutball (Ron Paul) to RINO (Mitt). WAF and it's way too late to stop it. The best we can do is try to make the Recovery as fruitful as possible. 574

Requiring that employers verify citizenship is an oppressive police state action?

You are bitching over a relative perception.

It's a glass half full/glass half empty thing. The glass is a quarter empty, and Ron Paul says, somewhat insanely, that the glass is agroscopic, it is sucking all the moisture out of the air with almost magical speed and will turn the whole planet into a desert.

But the volume without water he refers to is what it is.

Will you disagree on the substance? You should not. Ron Paul isn't making policy, because the types of policies he would make, he can't make - no one else would support it.

He talks about these issues ideally. In the ideal, NO, a private citizen or company should not be required to bare the financial burden of implementing the law themselves, without compensation.

Because in principle, that is slavery. The government cannot demand work, labor, material or time of anyone without just compensation. That is one of the fundmenetal principles of this country.

This sort of thing is, in the scope of the current federal monstrosity and totally unconstitutional lawlessness, still piss in the bucket. Minor thing. But he's not wrong. As a general principle, the idea that 'government should compel private companies to take specific action - without compensation - in the name of enforcing federal regulation' is a disasterously bad idea that cannot not be misused.

So do you disagree with the kook?

(I haven't red the whole thread.)

Just seemed lie we got sidetracked into Newt's marriages, abortion, etc.

609 Fuck you.

Again, do facts matter? Or is it all emotion all the time now?

Wanna bet on the issue? Will you ever acknowledge it when you turn out wrong or will you just stomp on off to the next irrational boogeyman?

There will be a 3rd party run.

Johnson, quite possibly.

Paul and Trump?

Yeah, 'fuck me' for trying to smack some sense in you. Go back to fearing all the wrong things, it must be a confusing existence when everything keeps blindsiding you.

603 Where was Erin Burnett.  Guess she overshadowed old gloria too much last couple of debates.

Entropy  - We understand your a LAUP NOR to the HTAED

Not really. It's yet more bullshit that gets projected. I'm willing to be quite critical of the man when the point is fair. I'm simply boggled by the irrationality of the haters.

Posted by: Entropy at January 19, 2012 06:32 PM (Ci0JG)

605

It's literal intolerance. He has some points you don't agree with, so he must be destroyed because he is vile (even though one of the major criticisms against him is he's never actually done or effected anything of substance).

So the hatred must be based purely on his having different opinions.

It's a little disturbing, frankly.

Posted by: Entropy at January 19, 2012 06:34 PM (Ci0JG)

606 Yeah, But we know the top of the lauP noR slide is real pretty.. All safe, and you can see a long way, and the metal is all cool and shiny-  until your sliding, sliding into Krazy Close Foreign bases "I was in the AFPAK theatre" land.  Where's the bong..?

607 Santorum can shove his statist values up his smirking ass.  He's a small, petty prick who as a kid didn't receive the punches in the face he so clearly needed and I'm looking forward to watching his douchebag ass quietly slink out of this race after Saturday.

Posted by: The War Between the Undead States at January 19, 2012 10:28 PM

I heard some Santorum, then some more from a friend in PA. that liked him, then heard some more, and came to the conclusion of the above.

608 I like how the CNN folks were trying to justify asking the Newt-wife question because it was breaking news today...but no mention of Obama axing the Keystone Pipeline.

609 Damn did you guys check out Intrade?  After the debate Gingrich is 60/40 to win SC!

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at January 19, 2012 06:52 PM (uVlA4)

610 Is there a replay somewhere online? I dang missed it.

Posted by: MrC_5150 at January 19, 2012 06:56 PM (UeuU/)

611 CNN will probably repeat the whole thing in the next hour.  At least that has been their pattern.

Posted by: c. up at January 19, 2012 06:57 PM (oZfic)

612 Thanks. Figured they'd have it quicker than that. Basterds gonna make me stay up all night. ;-)

613 CNN repeating the debate in its entirety now.

614 Bill Mitchell: Damn did you guys check out Intrade?  After the debate Gingrich is 60/40 to win SC!

I'd say that's [unfortunately] accurate.

Romney's post-NH gains have been locally contained in SC by the attacks on Bain Capital and his Income tax by the Newt and Gov. Perry.

Unfortunately, the Newt has fatally hurt us all as a party, up and down the ballot, in his attempt to win SC. He has single handily changed the conversation from one of Jobs to one of Income Distribution and Equality.

We win the former, we get destroyed on the matter.

615 Really the beginning is the best part.  After that they deteriorate into knocking each other and talking about what David the Ax wants them to talk about.  No mention of a lot of important issues.

Posted by: MrC_5150 at January 19, 2012 07:08 PM (UeuU/)

618 Yep I meant on CNN on television.  Sorry.

I'm sure there's a link on the CNN site for the debate though.  Fox always has a link, CNN has to have one.

620 Somewhere along the line, I'm pretty sure that Ron Paul, David Duke, Fred Phelps, and Karl Marx all had some pretty good ideas. Don't speak ill of them though, because that would make you irrational, right Entropy? I mean, they didn't really do anything. Maybe we should spend the evening discussing all the good things Stalin or Hitler did. Couldn't have been all bad, right? There is one and only one proper response to nutjob cranks like Ron Paul- intolerance.

Stalin and Hitler did quite a lot.

Ron Paul most certainly has not. Make fun of him exagerating about the police state, then compare him to Stalin and Hitler.

You're completely bent on the subject.

Also, you can't do shit about it.

So enjoy. Keep on frothing. Can't make people shut up.

623 well that is interesting.  Sites that had posted the debate in its entirety now have the "video removed" notice.

629 “The Internet is not a free zone where anybody can do anything they want to do"

If they just sound bite that, without the rest, Santorum could have problems.

630 496 Okay. Good things about Romney:

Decent man
Family man
Devout man
Business experience
Executive experience
Finance experience
Typically cool-headed
HAS stated he will repeal Obamacare
HAS stated he is pro-life
HAS stated he is anti-amnesty

I'm not going to feel too bad voting for him

631 Gingrich was just ripping on Romney on the after interviews saying Romney is the "Wall Street Candidate". Jeebus Noot. Didn't learn your lesson on the whole Bain attack? That's the problem with Noot. He's got some good ideas, but he comes with so much baggage and is such an unlikeable prick I just can't vote for him for the nominee.

Funny how Romney is held up to a different standard than Gingrich and Santorum.

Romney will not release his tax returns until April- Big uproar among "conservatives." Gingrich releases one year and Santorum refuses to do so..no biggie.

Santorum does not support right to work, voted against it because of his home state and federal vs. state issue- no big deal.

Gingrich supports mandates for 20 years- Hey I was wrong- sounds good to me say "conservatives."

Santorum voted for the prescription drug plan- no big deal, I'm conservative, move along now.

Gingrich leeches off of Fannie and Freddie for years- no big deal, he's conservative, move along.

I enjoyed these moments:

Romney pointing out that Gingrich is mentioned once in Reagan's memoirs. Gingrich had an idea and Reagan dismissed it...funny.

Romney throwing back Santorum's abortion/Romneycare allegations right back in his face.

Santorum calling out Gingrich for being unpredictable and a loose cannon.

Gingrich telling the crowd that if you vote Republican, the kids will move out and get a job.

Romney not apologizing for making money.

Good stuff. It was a good debate. The three normal candidates all had their moments.
