— rdbrewer After he wins. In January. He should talk at length about about how things will get worse for a short while before they get better. He needs to emphasize that all the belt-tightening that has to be done because of the Obama administration will necessarily hurt for a while, but that in the long run, the country will be better for it.
He needs to rely heavily upon precedent. It took Ronald Reagan a little over two years to turn things around. Things got worse before they got better. He needs to make this a theme and keep driving the message home. That way, people will know what to expect, and the losses in 2014 might be minimized somewhat.
He needs to glue himself to Reagan. Every time someone mentions Romney and the economy, people need to think of what Reagan did.
If he is going to replicate something similar to the Regan Economic Miracle, things will be tough for a while. People need to keep that in mind.
Any other ideas? If not, open thread.

The film starts at the entrance to the White House. There is no sound track, and there are no people in view. The camera travels into the WH and through the hallways. The furniture will be scattered here and there, carpets torn up, paper everywhere, cabinets open with files spilling out.
Every hallway and room will be a fucking mess.
The camera travels deeper into the WH, into the Oval office. It will look like thieves visited the place.

Don't believe the bull shit narratives of how wonderful Volcker was at combatting inflation. All he did was combat the pro-growth policies of Reagan which themselves were disinflationary. It is amazing how poor our collective economic understanding actually is.

He should immediately kill every new regulation that has been put in place since Ovomit was elected. He can do that using executive fiat since that was what put them in place.
In parallel he should call for congress to pass bills of repeal for every new law that was passed while Democrats controlled everything and do it using the nuclear option.

What I think I know is that any Republican candidate out there now (including Mittens) will do a much better job of meeting the challenges and attempting to preserve the country than Obama would.

My kids are in their early twenties - drastic cuts in federal spending along with tax cuts are the only way they will have any chance of a decent life. The plan put forward recently by Paul Ryan is not near radical enough.

One of these worlds (corporate finance, turning around business) has a lot in common with the skills and experience needed to run a nation and repair an economy. One of these worlds (movies and weightlifting) does not.
You are seeking the counsel of despair for reasons I do not understand. There is time to turn away from that. We have a good candidate. We have a good chance. He's actually QUALIFIED to do the job. He's the hardest working guy on the planet, for fuck's sake. He's going to have a Republican Senate and Congress staffed with angry Tea Party types to apply pressure.
I'm feeling pretty good about what a President Romney can accomplish. We just have to get him in there.

All we need to get fiscal restraint is to control Congress.
You don't understand how civics works, do you? If Congress fails to pass a budget (or if, in the scenario you propose, President Obama simply vetoes Congress's budget) all that happens is that spending will continue under the same baselines as the last-passed budget (complete with built in automatic increases in spending). This is how we haven't had a government shutdown even though the Senate. The spending will continue, wildly out of control.
The ONLY way to get fiscal restraint is a unified Republican Congress and Presidency.
Of course I know you know this. But you're probably an Axelrod astroturfer sending out misinformation in an attempt to convince people who might be reading that it's somehow "okay" to vote for Obama or stay home or vote third party instead of getting Romney into office. So you'll never admit you're wrong.

I see what you're saying. I agree that we cannot lose focus on the House and Senate. No matter who wins, that's where the conservative pressure will have to hold the line. We'll simply have to do both. We simply have to win. If for no other reason than this: The men and women in uniform can not afford to have Obama as Commander in Chief. Period.

But we've almost unanimously come to the conclusion that the ABR ship has sailed. And now it's ABO-- Anybody But Obama.

Folks, a template does not exist to fix this. We are in completely uncharted territory here.
Understand this.
See, I'm pretty sure that Romney is literally the only guy in this race on either side who actually DOES understand that. (Ryan too, probably.) And his entire career has centered around finding creative, out-of-the-box solutions to seemingly intractable problems. Nothing is guaranteed, but you know what? THAT'S THE FUCKING GUY I want at the helm to deal with this problem in the next critical four years, not Obama or Rick "let's bring back old-style manufacturing!" Santorum.
I mean, how is it not clear to everyone that there is one guy among the choices on offer here from both parties who actually has, you know, a stunningly relevant skillset and preparation to take on the challenges we face? And that all the rest are clowns, comparatively speaking?

True, but irrelevant because the election isn't today. Meaning not only that things can change, but that entire tenor of the race, coverage, voter engagement & attention, would be completely different.
I don't think it's a guaranteed thing at all in November, but I do think Obama is under 50/50 for reelection. The polls will shift accordingly to reflect that once we get closer to go-time.

"Reagan was able to stimulate through..."
Reagan's tax cuts would NOT have worked without that huge demographic bulge in the "productive" population, due to the Baby Boomers coming of age in the 1980s [and, to a lesser extent, in the 1990s].
But as the [non-fertile] Baby Boomers head off into the sunset, we are now on the back side of that great demographic bulge.
What's replacing it is a demographic nightmare: An explosion in the numbers of the "unproductive" population [think "Obama Money" and "Amber Lamps" and their ilk].
Tax cuts alone will NOT be enough this time.
There just aren't enough productive young people anymore to fuel the engine of growth, and there are waaayyyyy too many unproductive "hoodied" young people just waiting to suck the life out of the system.
You simply cannot build a 1st-World economy on the backs of a 3rd-World populace.
And no amount of skittles fantasies can change that underlying demographic reality.

Technically, we are in a recovery. Of course, it is a fake recovery but as far as the press is concerned, we are in one. Romney is saying that all of the misery of the last 3 years could have ended 2 years ago if Obama hadn't screwed things up. I liked the speech he gave a couple of weeks ago where he talked about how Obama is the killer of dreams. That was a good way to put it.
He feels this stuff in his gut, but he doesn't have the words to get it out. I wish I could write for him, because I think I could do it for him. He just needs to get the right words.
I am not in the mood to hear about how maybe Romney will lose. That guy can STFU. My husband works in Africa so we can keep our house. I worked my tale off selling stuff on eBay last year and after I sweated to get $12000 in sales, we ended up owing $20,000 in taxes, a check which I will have to write on April 15.
We have people living in cars and under bridges. We have gas approaching $5.00 a gallon and food costs going through the roof. This is directly Obama's fault, no one else's. He's destroying our national security (and Israel's too when he gets hold of any of their secrets, which he immediately has leaked). He's humiliating our country. He's ginning up race and class warfare and his allies are the worst sorts of thugs our nation has produced.
So That Guy, go away. Go sit somewhere anad think about this long and hard. Do not come here like Wormwood whispering poisonous defeatism. I will call you out on it every time. You are an Eeyore at best, and a democrat troll at worst. Go away.

Newt was right about one thing: the ecomony will start to turn around on election night if Obama loses. If Romney does what he promised and gives wavers to all 50 states for Obamacare and then takes the boot off energy producers, the economy will get better in weeks, not months or years.
Mitt's biggest problem will be the media. No matter how much better it gets and how fast it gets better, the media will hide it or lie about it.

With the "phasing out" beginning IMMEDIATELY, the next day after the bill is signed - and the "phasing out" period being no more than about 20 years for SS & Mediscare and more like 5 years for SSI and AFDC and the EITC - so that you are looking at IMMEDIATE cuts for old folks on the order of 5% and immediate cuts for the "Hoodied / Amber Lamps " crowd on the order of 20% [modulo the appropriate logarithms].

Actually, for the record, the old folks' programs could be phased out rather effectively simply by continually increasing the eligibility age, something like:
Every two years, the eligibility age increases by one year.
Then everyone already enrolled in SS and Mediscare will always stay on it, but the rest of the us have to stay on the treadmill for increasingly long periods of time.
Eventually, the eligibility age will get up around 120, no one will qualify, and the programs will simply cease to exist.
But cutting off bennies to the "Hoodied / Amber Lamps" crowd is going to require infinitely more will power.
They WILL riot, and riot very violently.

We will have riots in November no matter wat. Riots if Obama loses, in revenge. Riots if he wins, to show us who is in charge.
I am therefore planning accordingly. And I will vote for Romney and urge everyone I can to do so. because we have been shown that nothing is ever good enough for the race-baiters. Obama no longer deserves the benefit of the "vote for Obama to show how tolerant we are" vote. A bunch of people (not me) did that and all it got them was an economic disaster and more insults.

"And when you do get serious like that, then just sit back and watch Rodney King times Ten Thousand."
So we can't because there might be violence?
As far as the LA riots, I was there. Funny thing. Turns out all my Lib neighbors had guns. So it was bad, but we had protection.
One last thing to consider. If you are a minority commiting violence, you are that, a minority. So the numbers against you are stacked, and not in your favor.
Just a reminder...

+100 million. Yes, yes, yes. You nailed it, Miss Marple.
I live in a conservative county in Florida. We vote GOP overwhelmingly here. I do not know anyone who will not vote against The Won in November... and we were divided when it came to voting for Rick Scott vs the pet McCollum. All were united in voting for Rubio when we kicked Crist's butt to become an ambulance chaser in Orlando (Meek was the forgotten Democrat in this battle). Look what unity can do!
Not voting for Romney in November is the same as voting for Obama in my book; as the similar self-righteous ship, the SS Cannot Vote for McCain '08, has sailed.

Anyone who is serious about righting the Ship of State knows that it will require cuts and cancellations [and deportations] which will provoke Rodney King riots times Ten Thousand.
We simply do not have the demographics anymore to "grow" our way out of this mess.

"No need to suspend it. It has been rendered meaningless already by constant changes to it over the years."
And if Romney signs into law a phase-out to SSI/AFDC/EITC, which has, say, immediate cuts of 10%, then do you think he's prepared to bring out the artillery - to send a MacArthur to break up the tent city on the Mall?
Heck, do we even have a MacArthur anymore who would give the order to break up the tent city on the Mall?
And do you think that Romney is ready to do that in 10,000 different cities SIMULTANEOUSLY?!?
When you start thinking about the logistics of it like that - and making actual plans for the logistics - only then are you starting to get even mildly serious about our looming fiscal/demographic disaster.

That's exactly right. And don't forget, they did the same to W with the war funding bills.

The only problem with that theory is that we've gotten to a point where either these reforms are made or it simply collapses our currency.
At the very least, if something like the Ryan plan is not instituted, you're going to see a run on the dollar and hyperinflation.
Romney will do the right thing because he has to.

Dick Cheney for Sec.of HHS
The first thing to do is to appoint Dick Cheney Secretary of Health and Human Services. All the lib loons who think its just fine that Kathleen Sebelius can use the unlimited power "as the Secretary shall determine" in ZeroCare will then have incentive to help repeal the law.

Here is one thing that Romney MUST have ready in case the Supremes do declare Obamacare unconstitutional, or even if they turn down just the mandate.
And this cannot wait until after the election. Romney must have a plan, and a good one, ready to introduce in Congress once he is elected, to replace Obamacare.
The minute the SC decision is announced, if any part of it is our favor, Romney must get television time, and have videos ready, in which he lays out the basics of a market-oriented freeing-up of our health care system and health insurance. He must be totally ready to make clear that heavy government regulation of health care cannot work due to both the system's complexity and its ever-changing nature.
Government regulation works somewhat for simple systems and steady-state systems. Health care is neither. Romney must have a really good and compelling, market-oriented plan ready to replace Obamacare with, and he must be ready to explain why it is good in terms that voters will understand.
His plan must also address catastrophic illness/injury coverage with a market-oriented solution. That is what most worries Americans, and justifiably so. And he must have something to offer the few who are truly, truly needy that will improve Medicaid.
If Romney is ready with such a plan, in case the Supreme court invalidates either the whole of Obamacare or the mandate, and if he can announce it immediately, in a compelling manner, he can reap HUGE benefits with voters.
I hope that somebody on Romney's team reads this. It would be a political masterstroke (assuming Romney could carry it off).

You all have way too much confidence that Romney is going to all of a sudden turn into a moderate or something even resembling a conservative.
First week in office: Grant waivers for Obamacare to all 50 states then announce that he has solved the 10th amendment issue and each state is free to seek a waiver if they want. Institute the corrections to Obamacare to make it more like Romneycare and announce that he has saved the healthcare system. By executive order institutes a cap and trade on carbon emissions but reduces corporate taxes and lets everyone know that their increase in cap and trade costs will be offset by lower corporate income taxes.
Second week in office: Fill vacancies on federal bench by appointing democrat judges at a rate of 3 to 1, but telling Republican senate that you can trust him, he's a conservative.
Third week in office: Get fellow Republicans to pass the Dream Act, by having them attach an amendment that requires the deportation of all illegal immigrants....tells Dems not to worry as he'll nix that with a signing statement.
