The Gaming Thread....It's Back Edition
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Afternoon 'Rons and 'Ettes! Zakn here! I apologize for the absence of the Gaming thread. I've been working a ton, so I neglected working on a post. Neglect no longer!

In our last Thread I brought up the Humble Indie Bundle V. They sold almost 600,000 bundles raising just over 5 million bucks. A portion of that went to a great Charity called Child's Play.

Point you ask? Yes. So i've been playing a grip of Super Meatboy. That's so last year you might say. Agreed. Where I'm going with this is Indie Game: The Movie. A bunch of professional nerds I follow on teh Twitters were raving about it, so I went and paid my 10 bucks (I think it's on Netflix streaming as well) for the DRM free edition. The Movie follows the people that made Super Meatboy, and Phil Fish who made Fez. Everyone has been losing their bowels about Fez, so I was interested. It was neat to see the ups and downs of these dudes as they went through the grinder making and marketing their games.

If you run a small Business, I recommend watching it. Small 2-3 Dude shops versus large companies of 700+ developers In between Playing Eve and Super Meatboy, I've been terrifying myself with Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

The game is pretty cool because you can't actually fight anything. All you can do is run and hide. Very opposite to where everything else in gaming has been going. Plus there's a sequel coming out soon. Don't know if I'm going to get it. This damn thing is rough enough on my senses. Don't let me discourage you from it, it's an awesome play.

So Eve Stuff.

I made a public chat channel for us. It's AoSHQ It's a troll free zone. Don't care if you are blue or red, Hisec carebear noob or whatever. It's for Morons to chat about stuff in game. Save the troll stuff for Kugu or the Eve-O forums. Channel is for light banter and chat about all things Moron.

My bud on Twitter Koopy was asking me about Eve. Where we play etc. Eve is a one shard game. Everything that happens on Eve affects everyone else. Unlike other MMO's there aren't different Servers. Goons messing around with the faction warfare LP system jacked with everyone else that does FW. Man, did that story blow up lol.

Few more things and then it's your thread. Last thread I posted a vid from a fight between Test/PL vs Nuli down in Delve. (Map link lower left hand area). This "war" has sparked massive butt-hurt and bad posting. Why am I talking about this you ask? This is why.

It's a parody of the Call me Maybe vid dri posted in the sidebar earlier this week. My bro from the ONT, The Dude, hooked me up with a LoL version, which is probably cooler

Anyways. My Alliance is Deployed, which is one of my favorite things in game. We literally pick up sticks and head off to the buttcrack of space to go mess with someone. Leave a few alts to manage the infrastructure, but beyond that it's Starship Troopers. Even my Alt which does t2 production gets enlisted to do things. Oh you guys are Ratting there? Alt camps there and scares everyone off with probes. Love him or hate him, The Mittani had a great line about war in Eve when we kicked off the Branch war. Do everything you can do to ruin the lives of our enemies through the Eve Online Client.

And if you get comfortable with neuts in system...well you know what time it is... (linking the whole vid)

That's All I have this week friends. Hit me up on the Twitter if you roll like that.

Also. I got a great deal on a larger SSD than the one I'm currently using. I would prefer to not do a clean install or buy image software to migrate over to the new drive. If you have a good guide or advice, post it in the Breitbart section. I am using Win7 and have extra SATA blah blah blah. TIA

SilverGTP here with some news you can possibly use. This Tuesday is the release of the Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut DLC. This contains the alternate endings so be sure to download it. If you don't like the new endings, perhaps an FCC complaint will get new ones. It worked the first time, why not again?

A new Gears of War game is in the works, for release next year. You thought you won the war but there's always room for a prequel! Judgment is all about Baird and includes new multiplayer modes such as Overrun:

The Goonswarm struck again within EVE. This time hitting the economy for tons of ISK. More here.

Moronette Polliwogette has created a WoW Horde guild on Hellscream called Val U rite Pudding. If you play WoW then join up and raid everything!

Keep an eye on this website for news about a venture between Adult Swim and Valve. It's sure to be humorous, whatever it is.

Forza Horizon releases this fall and it looks to be a step backward in the franchise. Anyone who played Test Drive Unlimited 2 will instantly recognize this Forza, since it's the same game:

Fans of Star Trek might be excited to see the E3 announcement of a new game, simply called 'Star Trek'. The only decent game I've played is Star Trek Online and this new one looks a lot like Mass Effect. We'll just have to wait and see:
27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="480" height="418" id="VideoPlayerLg59168">

That's all the news I have this week. Summer is always a bit slow for gaming although it's a great time to buy used copies of games for cheap and to trade in old games towards pre-orders for this fall.

As always, find me on Twitter.

1 I hate the way the term "gaming" is used. Playing video games doesn't really count in my book. You want to be a gamer? Get out paper and pencils and dice and play with people. Pushing buttons on a controller or waving your arms around at a device on top of your TV doesn't count.
Its not that they aren't fun but you aren't a GAMER if you play these things, in my book.

Appreciate the guild mention SilverGTP.

Due to the fact that guilds are case sensitive, I do have to add the the name is Val U Rite Pudding.  Anachronda has signed the charter but we nee 3 more to get the guild actually running.  Anyone who wants to sign the charter can Let me know in-thread or message me @Polliwogette on Twitter.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I like WoW more than DDO, although it doesn't make me motion sick like DDO so that's probably a factor.

8 Speaking of Indie bundles... http://groupees.com/bemine3 I bought this. this is an INSANELY great bundle. since most of the games have steam keys you even have the option to trade/sell the ones you don't want. And many of them have direct download options so you don't have to mess with steam if you don't like it. The bundle has the first two OddWorld games, Avernum 4, 5 and 6. A good military FPS (Red Orchestra) and more more more. I bought it just to get the 3 Avernums. Such A Deal.

9 The best job for an Economist? Economist Valve’s multi-player games, as well as Steam (Valve’s successful trading platform), have allowed for the spontaneous emergence of complex virtual, yet quite real, economies. These economies are replete with rich trading patterns, fascinating ‘institutions’ (which have also sprung up organically), socio-economic conventions, and, generally, a host of economic phenomena that partly reflect what we observe in the analogue world and partly constitute new and unexplored behavioural patterns. The task of a Valve economist is to make good use of the incredible wealth of data concerning these social economies, to pose fresh questions about their workings, and to generate methods for converting new knowledge about these economic vistas into tangible ideas that help improve our customers’ experiences. Duties: Research, design, develop, and validate economic models to explain user behavior for all of Valve’s products. Design experiments to validate experimental hypotheses for in-game economies. Provide insight into short- and long-term behavioral patterns of participants in virtual economies. Inform decision-making at Valve by providing quantitative and economic rationale for various lines of inquiry. Create new avenues of analysis based on existing economic metrics, as well as generating new domains of data to collect and investigate. Collaborate with our business development team to improve the performance of existing pricing strategies and incentives for our customers and partners. Requirements: Graduate degree in Economics or related field Advanced knowledge of statistics Four years experience with: Econometrics/data-mining or related field Relevant analysis techniques that inform the creation of economic models Recommended: Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: C++, SQL, PHP, or equivalent

20 For anyone who plays Dota 2, DotaCinema runs a great top 10 best plays show every week: http://www.youtube.com/show?p=_xzbC3albNc For anyone interested in playing Dota 2 (you control 1 hero character on a team of 5 and try to destroy the opposing team's base), DotaCinema has a great library of introductory videos to help you get to know the game. Your only problem will be getting a beta key, as you need to fill out some kind of "survey" to be considered and the process is kind of buggy.

26 I jump on Wolfenstein: ET now and again. It's a fun game!

I'd like to play Guild Wars 2. Star Trek Online is too repetitive and not immersive enough for my tastes. LoTRO is fun, though I'm not much for endgame. I want to like sandbox games, badly. I've dabbled in Fallen Earth but I'm discouraged by the learning curve, wondering if the whole game feels so plodding. The occasional EVE trial puts me in a similar position. Repopulation is looking quite good. I'm definitely into crafting, making a home, exploring a world.

28 Don't know if there are people who like diablo clones, but I bought a pack of the new Torchlight2 game for some friends, and received 3 extra copies of Torchlight1. If anyone is interested if one, lemme know.

Also, if there are people who like big/long RTS games, I'd advise checking out Sins of a Solar Empire. Huge maps, and fun race/classes to play.

Similar space RTS is Star Ruler, where it's not as impressive graphically, but you can heavily customize yourself, down to how your ships are outfitted. So you could have slow moving warships larger than planets, small speedy fighters, or somewhere in between. You also get to chose between piloting the ships with people or AI which both have pros/cons.

point of order on mass effect 3 extended: it's added content to further explain the ending to all the slope-browed yokels who didn't understand 'artistic intent' of the original ending. (yah, i'm one of them)

i've never played a game with an ending that so sent me into a primal, seething rage. close second would be a tie: then ending of Halo 2 and the ending of KotoR: the Sith Lord.

the download for ME3:EC is going to be 1.9gb and on June 26th, i forsee DLS and cable connections being abused beyond all imagination.

all i gots to say is that if i don't end up on Rannoch building a house for my Quarian space waifu when i finish ME3, bioware will have jacked up the game... again.

I can do GPU and Mobo repair too!

Also, I have a great PS3 60gig, which is HARDWARE compatible with PS1-2! ($200)

Email me, my user name below at hotmail.. (I don't mean to be spamming, just letting the 'rons and 'ettes know there is hope for dead gaming wares!)

As for games, I was playing SW:TOR, but I can't while I'm studying a new hobby.. They just offered free transfers for about 7 servers to 1 central one.. I think they should have done that a while ago, or launched with less servers, but they were trying to avoid the mistake SWGalaxies made, and I don't really blame them, being there for BOTH launches lol.

For my quick gaming fixes, I've been playing on Kongregate, and have found lots of great lil games there (and some stinkers too)

Well, Ok, back to lurker mode! See ya'll next time!

57 #54

Valve has been making noises about a Steam port to Linux. This isn't expected to mean a flood of new Linux games, though. It is believed to be a step towards a Valve console that a lot of developers would be easily enticed in porting to. Many of them might become more likely to support desktop Linux versions of their games if supporting the console gets them much of the way there. The question would remain whether the numbers would be there, especially with Valve pushing the console.

Another example of consumers being interested in buying Linux devices but not Linux itself, as seen with Android phones, TiVo, and various other devices. The lesson being to not sell Linux but sell functionality and branding specific to that functionality.

Tell you what. Want a really quick, easy to read book of Ancient Empires? That's the one. Ton of info, and also mentions how there, for some reason, seems to have been at least 2 upheavals in different times in the old world that caused mass migration and destruction of Empires.

Good reading, actually.

76 Been a while since I've turned on my XBox. E3 was a huge disappointment this year for the 360. Delved into Europa Universalis 3 a bit. Fun game, just what I want from a nation/empire building game. Super complex and difficult as hell, but really rewarding. Love tabletop wargames. Picked up Killing Ground from eBay for "cheap". As soon as I finish my gaming table, I'll give it a go. Probably going to pick up the D-Day expansion for it to get the whole experience. Snagged a copy of Liberty Roads last night as well. That'll be a lot of fun, since it allows me to make the D-Day landings anywhere along the coast of France/Belgium/Netherlands.

88 President Obama waited for the temperature to cool just a bit before heading to the golf course on Sunday. Obama is golfing at the Fort Belvoir course, according to a White House pool report. The president is golfing with White House chef Sam Kass, staffer Mike Brush and White House trip director Marvin Nicholson, a frequent golf partner of ObamaÂ’s. The temperature at the course is a steamy 89 degrees but a slight breeze makes it feel a little cooler, according to the Weather Channel. Washington is in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures hitting 100 degrees on Thursday. This will be the presidentÂ’s 101st round of golf since entering office according to a count kept by CBS NewsÂ’s Mark Knoller. He was last on the course on FatherÂ’s Day.

90 In an op-ed published Saturday in Newsweek, President Barack Obama marked the 40th anniversary of the enactment of Title IX — which bars gender discrimination in education — and noted that more women in the United States are now graduating from college than men, which he characterized as “a great accomplishment” for the nation. “In fact, more women as a whole now graduate from college than men,” Obama wrote. “This is a great accomplishment — not just for one sport or one college or even just for women but for America. And this is what Title IX is all about.” According to the Census Bureau, 685,000 men and 916,000 women graduated from college in 2009 (the latest year for which statistics have been published). That means 25 percent fewer men received college degrees than women. . . . In his Newsweek op-ed, President Obama said Title IX helped America ensure what he called “equal education.” “Well, 40 years ago, committed women from around the country, driven by everyone who said they couldn’t do something, worked with Congress to ban gender discrimination in our public schools,” Obama said. “Title IX was the result of their efforts, and this week, we celebrated its 40th anniversary — 40 years of ensuring equal education, in and out of the classroom, regardless of gender.”

92 President Obama later called Morsi to offer his congratulations. He also called General Ahmed Shafiq, who was defeated by Morsi, and urged him to play a role in EgyptÂ’s transition by supporting the democratic process.

93 The Gaza Strip erupted in into celebration on Sunday after news that the Muslim BrotherhoodÂ’s candidate won the presidency in neighboring Egypt, with one person killed by celebratory gunfire. Tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after Egypt announced that Mohammed Morsy won last weekendÂ’s runoff election, the first time an Islamist won that nationÂ’s highest office. Gunmen fired automatic weapons into the air, while mosque loudspeakers rang with prayer. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners. Others waved Egyptian flags and blasted the countryÂ’s national anthem from car speakers. A Gaza health official said that one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire. Gaza is ruled by Hamas, a local offshoot of EgyptÂ’s Muslim Brotherhood.

94 I find it annoying that just about every story the MFM does about Fast and Furious calls it a "botched" operation.

The reporters that write these and use this adjective should be emailed and twitterbombed with comments that insist they correct their stories, or never use "botched" in writing about it further.

Nothing went wrong.  Nothing got botched.  What is being examined has nothing to do with the program's execution, and everything to do with its command and control.

It is exactly the same as Watergate.  It was not the burglary, but about the coverup of its initiation and direction.

It's the coverup, stupid.

And that is the message these MFM "reporter" twerps need to hear.  IT"S THE COVERUP, STUPID!

You want a fucking Pulitzer?  Forget trying to change diapers for your baby boy preezy.  He's toast.  See if you can outdo Woodward and Bernstein.

96 The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee warned against “prejudging” the Muslim Brotherhood as Mohammed Morsi became Egypt’s first Islamist president today. “During my recent visits to Cairo, I’ve had two candid discussions with the new president. He’s acknowledged that the central issue to Egypt’s future is economic. His words suggest he understands the gravity of the challenges facing Egypt,” Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said today. “In our discussions, Mr. Morsi committed to protecting fundamental freedoms, including women’s rights, minority rights, the right to free expression and assembly, and he said he understood the importance of Egypt’s post-revolutionary relationships with America and Israel,” he added. “Ultimately, just as it is anywhere in the world, actions will matter more than words.” Kerry said Egypt faces many challenges, but remains a “bellwether for the long term meaning of the Arab Spring.” “Obviously American concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood’s past statements and positions are widely shared and well understood. But it would be a mistake for us to pull back from our engagement with a free and democratic Egypt,” the senator said. “This is a time to test intentions not to prejudge them. All parties must come together to build a better future for the Egyptian people and I will continue to monitor Egypt’s political transition with great interest.”

105 I should subscribe to the RSS feed so I can get in on these threads when they're actually fresh. ANYhoo. First: Fallout 3. Fallout 3's world is so different from ours that to try to map modern politics onto it is...kind of silly. On the other hand, the game's reverence for Saint Lincoln the Emancipator gave me the warm fuzzies. Fallout 3 could very easily be seen as a game where you rediscover America, and your choices directly affect the kind of America you rediscover. Plus, good LORD is New Vegas buggy! I ran into a complete plot-stopping bug and I never encountered anything like that in the original Fallout 3. Second: The complete Deus Ex collection, including the Augmented Edition of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is FIFTEEN FRICKIN' DOLLARS ON STEAM THIS WEEKEND OMGWTFBBQ. I cannot stress enough how much you (yes, YOU, THAT you sitting right there) should play the original DX and DX:HR (just ignore Invisible War). If you want to try out the original Deus Ex, it is currently two dollars and fifty cents. For less than a cup of coffee you can buy one of the greatest games ever madeohgodmymindjustbroke. Third: I'm going to plug the games of Daniel Remar. This guy pumps games out like candy, then gives them away for free. In particular, check out Iji, a big, fun platformer with a surprisingly deep plot, Hero Core, a Metroidvania where you pilot a hero in a jetpack, and Hyper Princess Pitch, an over-the-top 2D shooter about a spoiled princess out to punish Santa for never bringing her presents. http://remar.se/daniel/games.php In fact, I'm going to direct-link to the Hyper Princess Pitch trailer 'cause it's frickin' awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRJYFbJDkqs And finally, Generation Gaming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuqsxnHlhTc

108 I ran into a complete plot-stopping bug and I never encountered anything like that in the original Fallout 3. Oh, I did. The Gamebryo engine is a fucking disaster, it's horrific that some of the best-written games of the last decade have been made in it (including Skyrim, which was unplayable for me for about 4 months). should play the original DX and DX:HR (just ignore Invisible War). Posted by: Viridian at June 24, 2012 09:14 PM (X7+Wq) You see, I found DX1 a little annoying (and pretentious). It wasn't *bad*, I just didn't enjoy it that much. I *enjoyed* Invisible War much more, though I don't think it was objectively *better* (except graphically). I also liked Thief DS *enormously* more than its predecessors. Which makes me immensely trepidacious about Thief 4, since the 1&2 fanboys have been screaming at the top of their lungs their hate for Thief 3 since it was announced.

129 #94: Actually, it was literally the bird. When Chambers came forward and said he was an ex-Soviet spy who'd worked closely with Hiss, Hiss denied ever having met Chambers. Nixon knew one of the two men had to be lying, so he asked Chambers to tell him something about Hiss that not just anyone would know, something you couldn't just read in the social register.

Chamber told Nixon that Hiss was an avid birdwatcher, and would talk your ear off about the time he saw a prothonotary warbler if you gave him a chance.

Next time Nixon met Hiss, he said, "Hey, I hear you like birdwatching," and Hiss responded (paraphrased), "Oh, dude! This one time? I totally saw a prothonotary warbler! Let me tell you all about it..."

Nixon now knew who was telling the truth.
