— DrewM 11 ships, 6 Perry Class Frigates, the aircraft carrier Enterprise and 4 Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, will be decommissioned next year alone.
Now the frigates and the Enterprise are at the end of their useful life. They've done their time and it makes sense for them to go. But 4 Ticonderoga Class Cruisers (CGs), each with at least another decade of useful service left? What the hell.
From Information Dissemination:
In my opinion, unless there are serious undisclosed material condition problems on these ships [the cruisers], this is a Bullshit Popsicle. The over 500 VLS cell missile capacity of these 4 warships exceed the combined missile capacity of the Royal Navy, the French Navy, the Italian Navy, the Spanish Navy, the Dutch Navy, the German Navy, the Turkish Navy, or the Danish Navy. These four ships are about equal in total missile capacity to the existing surface combatant force of the Royal Navy today.
That's a lot of bang going bye-bye in one year.
It's especially puzzling since the Navy is picking up an increased Ballistic Missile Defense mission and 3 of the cruisers can be cost effectively upgraded to the mission while the fourth, Port Royal already is BMD capable (of course Port Royal has it's own problems).
The oceans aren't any smaller and our interests and missions haven't decreased at all, so I'm not sure how shrinking the Navy makes any sense. You can say today's ships are more capable and able to perform multiple-missions than ever before but one thing they can't do is be in more than one place at one time.
History has a way of repeating itself and I'm sure that in due time people will look back at this time as we look back on others and wonder what in the world we were thinking. Of course the answer is...save money. Of course, it's funny how we never hear about these kinds of cuts coming out of any other federal departments.

LOL. Of course they are. They started receding when I was elected. We don't need all these typical, evil white man's ships with the new Earth with its receding shoreline. Sure, I canceled land-based missile defense to claim that I was jacking up sea-based missile defense ... but reducing some of our sea-based missiles is EXACTLY sea-based missile defense.
Man, you people are dumb.
Allahu ackbar.

Vice President Joe Biden is stepping up attacks on Republicans as the party of "privilege" and defenders of an economy that is "rigged" against the middle class, while casting President Barack Obama as a champion of "the workers."
"Stated simply, we're about promoting the private sector. They're about protecting the privileged sector," Biden told a United Auto Workers crowd Thursday morning in the pivotal battleground state of Ohio.
Looks like the "war on womyn" strategy is on the back burner. And Barry will go back to what he knows best - class warfare. Considering how he and Aunt Ester live and spend money the Republicans (if they had any brains and/or balls) would tear him a new one over it

It is more humiliating to an enemy to have them fully understand what you are doing to them. As long as the evil America let's me destroy it in English I'm happy to do it. If it's supposed to be used for CAS, the A-10 fucking does the job well. I know the brass hates it for some unknown reason to me. What's not to like about mowing down talibans in a turkey shoot with a 30 caliber Gauss cannon.
Let the military worry about which plane they want. They have their reasons, and there's plenty of writing on why they want them. (Some of which may not be available to the general public) They had a shrinking budget, they chose the plane that they thought would be more important to their future needs.
And no, the F-35 doesn't have all the fancy stealth stuff just to be a CAS platform. You'll notice that the F-35 was never billed as an A-10 replacement.

ANY dissent from the 'Group think' means you get a less than perfect score on 'Equal Opportunity'... which is the kiss of death to your carreer.
Ergo... 30 or 40 years later? All you have are overly PC Senior Officers... because anyone with any Nads got weeded out along the way.
Case in point? our current CNO... who says the PRIMARY mission of the Navy is "Equal Opportunity and Diversity"... not war fighting... which is why its now more important to overpay for Green Fuel, than to keep Ships Maintained, so they are ready to go in harms way... (Maintenence standards are at very low levels in the fleet right now, due to a 50/50 deployment schedule, and lack of funds).

Half of them should have resigned over the blatant America-hate and idiocy coming out of the White House, but they have no integrity. Not even when Barky made a total mockery of the military by claiming that the first strategic review he tasked the Pentagon with came in obsolete because it took months to compile and "circumstances on the ground have changed" - though Barky implied that he knew what the circumstances on the ground were and the pentagon didn't and just handed him an obsolete report, anyway. Then Barky solved that "problem" by reissuing a "strategic review" that would take another few months to complete .. after which Barky mostly ignored the recommendations, anyway. And I don't remember a single staff officer resigning over that insane hackery and intentional dickery with the military.
And we ALL know exactly what Barky was doing - just intentionally delaying and stopping and constraining ... all in an attempt to make it impossible to fight in Afghanistan and for America to beg Barky to bring the troops home. This was obvious from the start and is exactly what has been happening. Meanwhile, all of the military brass are on board with this. Idiots. Truly.

Read your own link:
“Is the F-35 going to be as good a close-air support platform as an A-10? I don’t think anybody believes that,” Winnefeld said, “But is the A-10 going to be the air-to-air platform that the F-35 is going to be? So again, the Air Force is trying to get as much multimission capability into the limited number of platforms it’s going to have.”
As far as the military is cutting back on programs, it's because we, the people, have failed to constrain our gov't and make it live within fiscal sanity. One effect is that our military loses cool toys and its capability. All the more reason to vote Obama out, after which we need to fix spending.
If we fail, we don't have the money to pay for a competent military, and "we" (as a nation) deserve what follows.

I'm peripherally involved with this - meaning I have a second-row seat to these decisions being made. The Frigates were all supposed to decommission years ago, but were held on due to problems with LCS. The Big E is both old and unique, meaning E X P E N S I V E to maintain in both materiel, personnel, and logistical support. The cruisers were originally supposed to get a next-generation combat system upgrade but that went away about a year ago. So they're looking like the easiest to lose since it would be a least loss of capability - the assumption is that the new DDGs (113+) being built will more than make up for the capability lost (there will be more missile tubes gained than lost). The Port Royal's "other problems" are exactly why the newest Cruiser is going away first.
These decisions are pre-sequestration, meaning they are only meeting the requirements of the last round of cutting. If sequestration goes forward, stand the fuck by.

The answer to my questions is that there is no consideration being made for defense. Obaka is cutting the Navy to show he can, and weaken the USA as part of his idiotic strategy of making the USA the "same" as everyone else. I don't care if I have to vote for the Mormon, four more years of Obaka in power will wreck us as a first-rate, or even a second-rate nation.

The underming of our Navy is even worse than that. female Naval officers will now be permitted on submarines so that officers will have a shot at an occassional piece of ass http://tinyurl.com/3fqenbt during deployment.. but the enlisted personnel who run the sub? No women allowed. The enlisted men can go fck themselves as far as the dictator is concerned because open homosexuality is permitted and protected.

Agreed.
They want to start counting Coast Guard Cutters (a legitimate inclusion perhaps) in the fleet size totals. They will ignore this change in definition to argue they are not cutting the fleet. The press will let them get away with it.
So, problem fixed. Nothing else to see here.

Hey, now, come on folks. The 'two major theater war' strategy was from the 80's. Now that we have the Peace Dividend in the 90's, we don't need that huge military anymore, right? When are we ever going to need to fight two major theater wars at the same time?
The Libya thing a couple years ago required some shuffling of naval forces, including a carrier that was supposed to be heading back home at the time. That kind of thing will never happen again, right? Because our Preznit is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, right?

"Includes navy ship vessels of all forms including surface and submarines as well as smaller patrol boats and logistical types.
1. US - 2384
2. China - 972"
I think we've got a ways to go before we have to worry about cuts in the number of US naval ships.

Of course, the actual amount of money in the Treasury is not a consideration for the SCOAMF.

My son has been in the Navy for almost 5 years and has never been on a ship outside of training. He's got more experience as a ground force grunt than as an actual Sailor.
He's a Corpsman in Afghanistan.
