— Pixy Misa . . . isn't exactly glamorous. The money can be decent at times, but it barely makes up for the slow stretches that typically last from the end of the Christmas season through early March, and then again through the hottest part of the summer until fall's arrival. And even when business is good, it carries with it the increased likelihood of encountering belligerent, loudmouthed drunks.
Fortunately, the place where I work is more of a roadhouse; a working class watering hole that doesn't attract too many preening peacocks with popped collars and gelled hair. The beer is served in the can, though a polite request will get you a frosty mug to pour it in. The two most popular whiskies are Early Times and Seagram's 7, and the closest we get to top-shelf booze is Crown Royal --which runs a distant third in popularity. Bud Lite, Bud, Busch and Miller Lite cover 90% of the beer crowd. (We have no imports.)
For the most part, I enjoy working where I do. There are times, of course, when the crowd is a little rough around the edges and one or two people need to be called down and gently coaxed from the premises. But, all in all, the crowd is civil if not exactly genteel. It's just not the kind of place you want to start any trouble, as there's generally someone there who will happily finish it for you.
But over the past couple of years, the unfathomably idiotic guido culture has crept its way into my weekends, threatening to destroy what pleasures I take in my work by way of the execrable concoction known as the Jägerbomb (content warning: rough language). Somehow, the epicurean sensibilities of the menagerie of dullards who populate the cast of Jersey Shore have taken hold and popularized what can only be described as douchebag nectar, among people who by all rights ought to know better. I'm not even talking about people who have only recently reached the age of majority, but grown men with more than thirty years on the planet. What the hell has happened to the cultural underpinnings of this country when an otherwise fully-formed adult with a job can walk up to a bar and look another full-grown human being in the eye and, in all seriousness, ask for a shot of Jägermeister doused in Red Bull?
I refuse to believe I'm alone among my fellow bartenders of the world when a little piece of my soul shrivels and dies every time the word "Jäger" is uttered in my presence. We can't have sunk to such depths as a people that it's considered a perfectly normal, acceptable thing to actually consume a "cocktail" devised by a high school junior whose parents left them to watch the house for the weekend. And, even if you genuinely enjoy drinking that kind of bilge, the notion that you would ask another human being to prepare it for you is an insult too grievous to bear.
Look. If you want to drink and maintain some semblance of human dignity, it's pretty easy to do. The rules are pretty simple. For women, there are very few restrictions beyond remaining ambulatory throughout the night. Experimentation is encouraged within reason, though it's probably not a good idea to order a Mojito at peak business hours. It will take you a while to get it, and it probably won't be very good. It's a time-consuming drink meant to be mixed and consumed at a leisurely pace. That goes for most other time and labor intensive drinks, too.
As for men, it's pretty cut and dried: You drink whiskey neat, on the rocks, or with a common mixer like soda (Coke, 7-Up, etc.). Or, you can drink a classic cocktail like a gin and tonic, an Old Fashioned (off-peak hours only, please), or a whiskey sour. Or, you can just drink beer; imports and micro-brews are fine if they're available. But, if they're not, don't whine about it. Just shut up and drink the domestic. No one is impressed by your sophisticated beer palate anyway, and you'll recover from the indignity soon enough.
But, whatever you do, don't ask another adult human being to prepare something for you as ridiculous as a Jägerbomb, or the even slightly more ludicrous Vegas Bomb. You're a grown-ass man; drink like one.

You sound like a bartender I could use at my gigs. Speaking of which, for those of you in the Denver area, my band, voted Colorado's best cover band for four years straight, will be having its' End Of The World Party Saturday night at Chatfield's, 5500 S. Simms St. in Littleton.
It's going to be a blow-out. Luckily Chatfields is has plenty of seating. I'll be on bass, give me a wave. Liftoff is at 8PM. We finish when the world does.

Exactly! Was at a holiday party last weekend, grown-ass kids (with babies of their own) of the more mature neighbors who invited us.
First round of shots came out - JagerBombs. Later, JelloShots. I was thinking wtf did i step through a time portal to 1985? These 30-somethings were getting way inebriated too. Most were smokers, something I hadn't been around in decades. Was so glad to leave when they got to the sloppy drunk stage.

This makes me a RINO, probabaly. It also means that I have spent some good amount of time in exactly the kind of establishment he describes.
I admit I'm far more comfortable there, with the pool tables, dart boards, and blue-jean-clad people than I am in more uppity venues.
And Jagermeister is truly evil. The only people I knew who insisted on Jag shots were either assholes, or were working toward their asshole merit badge.
And don't even get me started on Red Bull--Mountain Dew with red food coloring and an extra shot of caffeine--how very very trendy.

When I lived in West Berlin back in the late 60's, we used to go to an Italian pizzaria and hang out. The owner would always finish the evening by giving everyone a round of groppa.
When you drink it, you can feel your eyes going bloodshot almost instantaneously.

Repeated shots of tequila is not your friend. Ever.
I disagree. When I broke up with my last GF a few years ago, I spent the evening at the hotel bar drinking shot after shot of Patron before going outside to smoke a cigar and watch the fireworks. Tequila was definately my friend that night.

I went to college in Wisconsin, we could buy a case of Rhinelander (bottles) for like $8 or something ridiculous like that. My friends and I drank so much that within about two months we had stacked the empties in the boxes around the room from floor to ceiling. The administration was not too impressed with our improv redecoration. So we returned the empties and started again!

I was at a Titled Kilt and ordered a Macallan neat. The waitress comes back from the bar and asks what "neat" means. So neither the waitress nor the bartender knew. And I thought I had done good by choosing the only waitress in the place without a tramp stamp.
That was your mistake. The tramp stamp is the symbol of quality.

Second that.
Usually it is Jameson with a beer (Harp's) chaser.
Segram's and Crown are popular because Canadian whiskey really has no personality of its own (leave it to the canucks to make boring liquor) and they mix well with every thing.

Bar etiquette is something one learns over time. The way I behave (and what I order) was very different at 22 versus 39.
Back then it was cheap cold beer, lots of it, with the occasional jello shot.
Now its pricier cocktails at pricier bars where "mixology" and "drink craft" is at a premium. An example of such a place is Anvil in Houston (http://anvilhouston.com/). I am sure every major city has a place like this now. Sure the drinks are expensive, northwards of ten bucks a glass easy, but they are handmade from scratch and are exquisite.

And I say Sam Adams only because that seems to be the "micro"brew a lot of bars have grudgingly added to their roster if they have historically only served domestics.

Frozen Margherita recipe
Fill a blender about half full of ice, add a can of condensed lemonade or limeade, a couple or three shots of Tequila, a couple shots of Cointreau (which is not cheap), and sometimes a splash of 7-Up if you like it a little sweeter than bitter.
Whip that up in the blender until the ice is all pureed. That's easy and pretty good.

A Slo Comfortable Screw. That's a good drink from my youth, back in the 70's. I haven't had one of those in years.
Southern Comfort is such weak ass whiskey, but it does mix well.

we would just laugh, we knew the barkeeps.

Looking at that Vegas Bomb (and the apparently brain-damaged bartender) I'm glad I got out when I did.
It was already getting weird when I left, though.
As for Red Bull and booze, if you want a "lift" while you're guzzling, why not just mix crystal meth and vodka and have done with it?

Nice post,
I for one hate the monstrosity of Jaeger (or whatever.) I tend to drink beer, or whiskey, often a rum and Coke (love the islands man.)
Margarita's with Mexican, but I don' think that counts.
Although I disagree with your statement on Beer. I love ale, sorry that's just that. If all you've got is Bud, Budlight and Natty, I'll just have a soda. (Nothing wrong with staying off the suds for one night.)

The exapansion of decently drinkable Belgian type beers (Shocktop, Blue Moon). Has helped.
I don't think I've ever "sighed" but I have gone from "What do you have on tap" to "I think I'll just have a Soda." (In fairness, I don't think I've ever done that at a bar though. Most bars have something decent on tap in the Ale section. Resturants are a different story.)

Me and guiness don't actually get along. The well known Microbrew here has an Oatmeal Stout that has sort of ruined my taste for stouts.
Newcastel is pretty good though.
Like I said though, better beers than the rot water coming out of AB (and I live in St. Louis!) are catching on, so I haven't had to not order beer in a looooonnnnggggg time.

I had an oatmeal beer at a micro-brew place in Bowling Green, KY once that was delicious. Oddly enough, I think the place was called "Hop's".

I don't drink rum at all anymore, but I sure did love it back then. I started on Bacardi Silver, and it was a natural progression to 151 after that.

In any event, I'm just glad you enjoyed the thread. I have, myself.

Just left some of my friends one of whom is Jag-infamous and a bartender. One who otherwise considers himself a pro drinker. How many times have I heard this Jaeger-bombing alleged pro toss me shit for opting for a Jamesons instead (usually in the guise of "upgrade - snob !!!" or some such). Man I needed to hear another sane drinking human being who thinks properly. Thank you. I'd rather pay for my own and one for the person offering to buy a Jaeger-fill-in-the-blank than take one more sip of that gak-nasty concoction that tastes like Robutussin, gasoline and licorice.

You're not being cool or ironic by ordering what every body else wearing their sister's jeans is drinking. You really drink it because it's cheap. No problem there. When your head explodes after I offer 2 other cheap alternatives and you still can't order, I'm kinda done with you. Especially when people who are ready to order are 4 deep around my bar.
Take a moment and recognize the kind of bar you're in. If you're in the mood for crafted cocktails, or an expansive craft beer selection, there are several good choices in town. In a low key, divey kind of bar, you're better off with beers (and look at the taps that are right in front of you) or basic cocktails.
I like bar tending. It's a great gig. But I'm a gunslinger. High volume, pump em out (and get em right), shots beers and drinks. That's what I'm good at and what I like doing. Don't mind making whatever we have the stuff for, but also have little patience for grown folks who act as if they've never been out or ordered anything in a busy establishment before...oh, and tip your service people. It's the right thing to do.

Nothing wrong with a little Jack 'n water. And not much water.
And I'll have an Old Fashioned now and again, although it's amazing how many different ways (and bartenders) there are to screw it up.
And I've long ago given up on Presbyterians--the drink, not the congregations--although I did know a hot little Presbyterian girl many many moons ago.
