The MAnhattan Cocktaol [CharlieBrown'sD????]

It's one of the classic cocktails, and one that is ruined more often than not -- usually by bad booze. Use the best rye whiskey you can get, or in a pinch, good bourbon. But for God's sake, don't use crappy Canadian whiskey. And for a twist, use a twist...of lemon peel.

Oh, and don't be intimidated by bitters. They add a zing to drinks that can be fantastic. This is Robert Hess, probably the best on-line source for cocktail info and lore. One of the things I like about him is that he does not make monstrous cocktails, so having two or three or four different ones is not a recipe for a hangover.

[Update - Andy]: This is as good a time as any to remind you about these little gems in the AoSHQ Amazon store. And by gems, I mean rocks that cool your booze without watering it down. They're the perfect gift for a 'neat' bourbon or scotch drinker.

11 This is my mixed drink of choice, and I make 'em pretty much the same way the guy in the video did for the exact same reason. I usually mix mine in the shaker but then instead of actually shaking it I just wiggle it around a little for cooling and then strain out the ice. And you're right, most often they're made poorly.

25 One mixed drink I'm fond of is the Godfather. Two parts scotch, one part amaretto. No ice. That's it; nice, simple recipe. Obviously, you're gonna want to use a blended scotch, as single-malts have their own distinct flavors that'll often clash with the amaretto.

I'm mixing up Cosmos tonight, 'cause I like them, and they're pretty, as well as raspberry liqueur and champagne.

Real men can drink beer, like they're good at. We've got a selection of ales, stouts and porters from some local breweries...we'll see how they do. And an "alt" - I grabbed one of those because the carton art was interesting. Don't really know what that is.

O/T: Does anyone know a quick way to soften a chip in a cut-glass plate?

My traditional star-pattern clear cut-glass dishes have seen many Christmases, but a few of them have little nicks in the rims. Since these can't be replaced, is there any way to at least file those down a bit, so they aren't so sharp? These plates ARE Christmas, if you know what I mean.

I have to go to the store now (Nooooooooooooooooooooo) but I'll check back in a bit and see if anyone has any ideas.

It's a good drink with bourbon. I just like the slightly spicier flavors of rye. And some bourbons can be very sweet, so the sweetness of the vermouth adds to that and can be too much.

Nah, can't afford to get hooked on MM, still drinking the cheap stuff. As for CRDM change-out if it involves working in the containment/drywell (not that familiar with BWRs) and doesn't involve a significant pay raise I would avoid it.

93 Moonshine! I think Oldsailor poet mentioned that. My family used to brew that up in west by god virginia. My Daddy had to go see one the uncles one day. Grannie said "they be brewing shine up in the holler. You step on up there but sing a song, and whistle a tune and make a lot of nosie. If you creep up on em unawares they just might shoot ya." He sang a tune, whistled a bit and went crashing up the path. Out from a tree stepped an Uncle with a 30-30, asking what business you be here on for boy? Ah the old family stories! Moonshine. You need to be careful, some guys run it thru a car battery..pour it in a paper cup if it turns green dont drink it. Some throw a dead animal into the vat to get it to working (fermenting). My family brewed good shine back in the day, none of that crap. The way you tell good shine is swish it around in a glass and look at the evaporation rings. 4 rings is 180 proof. You can distill it over zinc shavings and get 200 proof medical alcohol, but then again I'm a chemist. They never did that. Commonly they would cut it with sweet spring water and dilute to 100 proof. Thats 2 evaporation rings! Merry Christmas all! I have to run! Revenuers be coming!

96 Roger Simon- the good one - had an article a couple of months ago on his currently favorite two cocktails: His version of the Manhattan is a little odd but very tasty and has become my go to cocktail esp. for guests: 2 parts Buffalo Trace Bourbon 1 part Carpano Antica vermouth 1/2 to 1 part Luxardo Marachino liqueur The Carpano Antica vermouth is the old turn of the century style that has the bitter herbs in it so you don't need to add bitters. Expensive for vermouth but definitely worth it. The Marachino liqueur is another ingredient with a long tradition that's sweet but also kind of dry and bitter that smooths everything out. This is a sweeter but velvet smooth manhattan. I add a cherry- usually the overpriced but thoroughly delicious Luxardo cherries. You can use the same recipe with rye. I use Thomas handy Sazerac Rye. It's spicier that way and somehow tastes more alcoholic but it's still excellent. Simon's version of the Martini uses Plymouth Gin, great stuff....and here is the secret- Bitter Truth Celery Bitters. Try it. Makes whatever traditional Martini you drinking now taste 3X better.

100 42 Gem - I use a small diamond coated sharpening steel to smooth out nicks in crystal. Those have very fine grit so it doesn't cloud the glass and takes the edge off nicely. For a small nick you often can't even see it was there.

We called the tubes with the fuel pellets in them "rods", the entire assembly was called a "fuel bundle". The tubes make up the clad and yes, the required precision was phenomenal.

Which was one of the reasons that the last price I saw for a fuel bundle (many years ago) was $10M.

122 42- GEM "a quick way to file town nicks so they aren't so sharp. " Used to do mosaics with stained glass, broken mirrors, dishes etc. Sharp edges were buffed smooth depending on how hard they were to reach and how big an edge by: dremel tool, (not for your job) Metal file (too big) I would try household stuff I also used. Fine grit sandpaper oooor an Emory board, metal nail file since it sounds like its a delicate job. I don't have an Emory board on me me but two sides I think. Rough and smooth. Not sure how hard your cut glass is though. Hope it helps and you can use your dishware with 'memories'...then maybe try some mosaics.

131 I'm actually kind of a nut about the Manhattan. It's my favorite cocktail, and I have experimented quite a bit with different recipes. My all-time favorite version is a Perfect Manhattan: 3 parts Woodford Reserve 1/2 part Carpano Antica sweet vermouth 1/2 part Noilly Prat dry vermouth dash Regan's Orange Bitters maraschino cherry as garnish (if you're feeling really fancy, use Luxardo's cherries.) A purist would stir and strain into a martini glass, which I do from time to time. But my favorite way to drink this is to just mix the ingredients in a shaker and pour into a rocks glass over crushed ice. A couple of stirs in the glass and it's perfect. My wife and I drink enough of these that we mix up enough to fill a whole bottle and just label it as Perfect Manhattan. That way, we're good to go at the drop of a hat. As a bonus, the Carpano has a dried-fruit finish, which should remind most morons of their prune & sterno years.

For about $30 dollars I and my friends received about $150 of a great champagne style Cognac.
