— Open Blogger It's one of the classic cocktails, and one that is ruined more often than not -- usually by bad booze. Use the best rye whiskey you can get, or in a pinch, good bourbon. But for God's sake, don't use crappy Canadian whiskey. And for a twist, use a twist...of lemon peel.
Oh, and don't be intimidated by bitters. They add a zing to drinks that can be fantastic. This is Robert Hess, probably the best on-line source for cocktail info and lore. One of the things I like about him is that he does not make monstrous cocktails, so having two or three or four different ones is not a recipe for a hangover.
[Update - Andy]: This is as good a time as any to remind you about these little gems in the AoSHQ Amazon store. And by gems, I mean rocks that cool your booze without watering it down. They're the perfect gift for a 'neat' bourbon or scotch drinker.

But soon after the Nov. 6 election, more than 100 Tea Party Patriots leaders and state coordinators gathered at a Hyatt hotel in Washington and chose a different strategy for the fiscal cliff. “We decided to treat Congress like grown-ups and say, ‘Fix it,’’’ said Gasiecki. “It’s like parents who have raised their kids well and step back and say, ‘Prove to us that you’ve been listening.’’’

it's important that you make your ice with filtered water

I know they're back in vogue, but Manhattans....arrgh.
I'm mixing up Cosmos tonight, 'cause I like them, and they're pretty, as well as raspberry liqueur and champagne.
Real men can drink beer, like they're good at. We've got a selection of ales, stouts and porters from some local breweries...we'll see how they do. And an "alt" - I grabbed one of those because the carton art was interesting. Don't really know what that is.
O/T: Does anyone know a quick way to soften a chip in a cut-glass plate?
My traditional star-pattern clear cut-glass dishes have seen many Christmases, but a few of them have little nicks in the rims. Since these can't be replaced, is there any way to at least file those down a bit, so they aren't so sharp? These plates ARE Christmas, if you know what I mean.
I have to go to the store now (Nooooooooooooooooooooo) but I'll check back in a bit and see if anyone has any ideas.
TIA, and Merry Christmas Eve, morons and ettes!
Thank you for keeping me sane for the last four years!

Whatever works!
It's a good drink with bourbon. I just like the slightly spicier flavors of rye. And some bourbons can be very sweet, so the sweetness of the vermouth adds to that and can be too much.

I claimed the barrel is full of MPPPPP's leftover gingerbread stout, andycanuck countered with a Duck of Clarence reference, which I had to look up, which led to this factoid:
>>>>The circumstances of ClarenceÂ’s death are unclear. Some say that he was beheaded secretly, some say that he was murdered by his younger and more ambitious brother, Richard of Gloucester, later Richard III, but the most prevalent rumour was that he had been despatched by drowning in a in a butt of malmsey wine.
So I'm suggesting that the Style Guide be updated to change "barrel" to "butt of malmsey wine".

We called the tubes with the fuel pellets in them "rods", the entire assembly was called a "fuel bundle". The tubes make up the clad and yes, the required precision was phenomenal.
Which was one of the reasons that the last price I saw for a fuel bundle (many years ago) was $10M.
