The Morning Rant 04-16-2021 [OregonMuse]
— Ace Open Blog

The Democrats' latest proposal for expanding the number of Supreme Court justices is a good example of how we can never have an honest discussion of the issues.

First, they're calling it "court reform". Back when FDR proposed a similar expansion, it was called "court packing." As such, it has always carried a negative connotation, which no doubt the Democrats' spinners realized might work against them, so they decided to replace the negative term with one with a positive connotation. Hence "court reform."

Note that when Donald Trump was fulfilling his constitutional duty by appointing judges to fill existing court vacancies, the Democrats called this "court packing". Which totally turns the original meaning of the term upside down. Of course, redefining and repurposing commonly accepted terms into something completely different is a well-used instrument in the progressives' toolkit.

Anyway, by introducing the term "court reform", the implication is that the court is somehow broken or defective or inadequate for its appointed tasks, and so therefore it must be fixed. But the Democrats, to my knowledge, have never specifically stated what, exactly, is wrong with the Supreme Court that must be remedied. Other than complaints that it isn't "balanced", which, actually, isn't a constitutional requirement.

Also, if SCOTUS really did have a problem, you would think it would be apparent to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, not just Democrats.

Why is there a problem that apparently only Democrats can see? Because the problem they're having is that there are more SCOTUS justices appointed by Republican presidents than Democrat presidents. In other words, they're not getting the outcomes they want. SCOTUS has not yet been wholly transformed into another appendage of the progressive hive.

Only they don't want to admit this part out loud because then they'll be revealed as the partisan hacks they are.

And this is how dishonest the Democrat proposal is: it basically amounts to them saying: "we want more judges on SCOTUS, and we want them right away so our guy can make the appointments to insure things go our way."

I think it's obvious to everyone that there is not even a pretense of neutrality in the Democrats' proposal. This is just a straight-up grab for power. I cannot imagine even the most quisling Republicans, not even Romney, or Murkowski, or Ryan, actually "reaching across the aisle" to vote with the Dems. Not for something like this. I cannot imagine the proposal being passed by anything other than a straight party-line vote.

Again, the Democrats should explain what the problem is that adding more SCOTUS judges will solve. But I haven't heard one explanation that doesn't boil down to "we want to appoint more judges who will decide things our way."

Another thing they could do to reassure the rest of us that this isn't just a partisan attempt at seizing control of SCOTUS is to include a provision that new judges won't get appointed to the expanded court until after the next election. This will give the people a chance to weigh in on the issue directly. The Democrats can push their proposal and Republicans should have legislation ready to annul the expansion should they win and the people can decide.

That's fair, isn't it? Why would that not be fair?

Of course, the Democrats would risk having it blow up in their faces if they went along with it, so they won't, but it would be fun if a Republican would propose this as an amendment and listen to the Democrats cry and squeal as they voted it down. And, if the Democrats succeed in their court packing, the institutional corruption would be ratcheted up another notch or two, and more people will conclude that we're not going to be able to vote our way out of this.

And perhaps that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

42 I have to share what has to be the dumbest introductory set of paragraphs to any official email I have we ver received. My alma mater IU Bloomington sent a message titled Announcing IUs 17th President...fine whatever. Here is how they started the announcement:
"This morning we woke up to news of another heartbreaking mass shooting, this time at a FedEx facility in our own state. These events have become horribly familiar to us, and our thoughts are with our fellow Hoosiers as we grapple with another tragedy. The weight of this painful event will stay with all of us.

As we've had to do too many times in recent memory, we will carry on with heavy hearts. I do want to share some historic IU news with you."
That quick transition to historic IU news, just underscores how vapid and empty their heavy hearts" are. They don't need to remind people what is in the frikin news already. It diminishes the awfulness of what happend when these kinds of statements are everywhere, especially in places where they do not fit. The university has ample means of addressing their sorrow. A presidential announcement is not an appropriate setting.

43 If it is Joanna Moore, and she looks like that in pic 6, she was in "The Deadly Decoy Affair" with Ralph Taeger.  Ralph had the distinction of playing in the TV series Hondo in the late Sixties and trying to fill the shoes of John Wayne.  I remember the show being on, but no details, so I don't know how well it worked.

Percentage of Americans...

Typical deceptive graphic representation.  By placing the baseline near the lowest point of the graph you can make it visually appear that approval of the media has dropped by 80 or 90 percent, to near zero, when the numbers would indicate a drop from the range of 50-60% to 46%. A drop, to be sure, but not as great as visually depicted.

I hate that technique.

87 The Long, Storied Controversy Over Cheese on Apple Pie - Gastro Obscura (atlasobscura.com)

Apparently it's been a "thing" for a looong time:
The tradition has silently polarized the nation, with some, like author John T. Edge, confessing, "at lunch or dinner I thought a wedge of pie was naked if it wasn’t crowned with a preternaturally orange slice of cheddar.” The poet Eugene Field (1850-1895) once wrote, "But I, when I undress me / Each night, upon my knees / Will ask the Lord to bless me / With apple pie and cheese.” There is even a saying, popular in many circles: "An apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze.”

They don't care. They're just going to keep moving on. The Cheka never rests. A narrow "victory" for the White House, a razor-thin majority in the House, no majority in the Senate? They have the power and they intend to use it.

The GOP says, "This isn't the hill to die on." To the Democrats, there's no hill, valley, meadow or wood that's not worth attacking, napalming, conquering and razing.

99 Vanilla ice cream on warm apple pie > plain apple pie > cheese on apple pie

Posted by: 496 at April 16, 2021 11:53 AM (U1eOr)

100 Not Vermont -- England:
The idea appears to have originated in England, where all sorts of fillings were added to pies. At some point, the17th-century trendof adding dairy-based sauces to pies morphed into a tradition of topping them with cheese. . .

According toThe Mystic Seaport Cookbook: 350 Years of New England Cooking, New England settlers brought the idea behind these Yorkshire pies with them, but instead of Wensleydale, they began using cheddar.

Why cheese? At the time, apple pies were quite bland: prior to the creation of the Red Delicious apple in the late 19th century, few apples tasted sweet. Cheese offered a readily available supplement. After all, in an era before the ubiquity of freezers, the most popular pie topping today—ice cream—was out of the question.

108 Typical deceptive graphic representation.  By placing the baseline near the lowest point of the graph you can make it visually appear that approval of the media has dropped by 80 or 90 percent, to near zero, when the numbers would indicate a drop from the range of 50-60% to 46%. A drop, to be sure, but not as great as visually depicted.

Frankly, I am shocked by the violence that has occurred over the last 2 months. Just because you shut down peoples livelihood for 1 year & 1 month without any compensation or financial support, completely eliminate their constitutional freedoms and "rights" which have existed for 3 centuries, relentlessly slander the character and heritage of millions of people, offer no security or hope which the govt is established to do, take away their only peaceful means of recourse at the voting booth by counting millions of illegitimate ballots in 6 cities to overturn the election, build a perimeter fence and standing army to occupy their nation's capitol, loot the treasury and print yourself trillions of dollars, enforce the law unjustly, gaslight them with endless propaganda and lies, intimidate people from speaking the truth, use psychological torture such as isolation and forced gimp mask wearing, coerce them into illegal medical experimentation, prevent them from practicing religion and going to church which is literally the 1st enumerated right and the reason our ancestors came here and founded our country while simultaneously allowing gambling drug use and rioting, overthrow foreign democracies, spend trillions on bombs to murder millions of people why your own nation and citizenry are in shambles, and threaten to unlawfully disarm your people....that's no reason for Americans to get upset. Like chill out bro, totally uncalled for. It's because of ar15s I think, and mentally ill entitles karens causing unprovoked hostility . But then again, people generally covered up so it didn't matter.

If you go to the beach today women are basically naked, so it makes sense shaving goes...everywhere.

I notice younger men shave their backs/chests now too - so perhaps in a few years no one will have body hair...

167 I read an article some time back that proposed men are being misled about the reality of women and sexual activity by porn: that they are having their heads filled with a fantasy of how women are and things go.  Because of airbrushing, faking pleasure, filming cuts, camera angles, etc.  Although it was rare at the time, women are being similarly misled because I understand more women watch porn these days.

Similarly, I think that romance novels give women a ridiculously fantastic false impression of romance and how love affairs are supposed to go or how men act as well.

But 3d porn anime, manga etc is doing the same thing, giving a ludicrous idea of how men and women look, act, and should behave.  No, women do not all have gigantic, symmetrical, gravity-defying breasts with huge nipples.  No, men do not all look shredded or have a wang the size of a baseball bat.

176 Epoch Times spent a day with DeSantis, their article on it is worth a read, even though it will not tell you anything you don't already know.

DeSantis finally says the magic words - "mitigation" of C19 didn't work, and was a mistake.  It's a redundant but stunning measure of how dumbed down and degraded the society is that this key, and obvious, point remains almost entirely unspoken by anyone in authority.

177 The court has not been balanced since FDR was President. The Democrats liked it unbalanced as long as they had a liberal court. It wasn't until Trump got to appoint 3 justices that it got more "balanced". And they don't like it. I say tough shit.

Yes. Packing the Court is pointless; it's reliably Statist as it is, and it will never find for liberty or make Constitution-based decisions.

This is purely dominance signalling. Just leg-humping.

In a report released April 12th by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the Monthly Energy Review, they report that energy-related CO2 emissions decreased by 11% in the United States in 2020 primarily because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions.
Furthermore, U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions fell in every end-use (consumer) sector for the first time since 2012. The EIA notes:

Now do people running small engines, burning brush, throwing away trash, recreational vehicles like boats, four-wheelers, jet skis, people running the HVAC in millions of individual homes instead of tens of thousands of public buildings, TVs, laptops, phones, etc. etc. etc.

But 3d porn anime, manga etc is doing the same thing, giving a ludicrous idea of how men and women look, act, and should behave. Factory emissions went to practically zero during the first lock downs.  Car and truck emissions flat line about the same time.  I didn't put gas in my truck for almost 7 weeks because there was no place to go.  Had to dump stabil in there.

Uh, that's from a satire site.

Someone posted last night or this morning about a luminescent "check engine light" type sensor that they're already putting into people ("now in late stage testing").  It apparently glows when you've got the COVIDs.

(searches, is pleased to learn it's easy to find)

"It's not some dreaded government microchip to track your every move, but a tissue-like gel engineered to continuously test your blood.

Dr. Matt Hepburn: It's a sensor...
Bill Whitaker: Wow. There's an-- an actual transmitter in that--
Dr. Matt Hepburn: Yeah. It's like a "check engine" light".

People are at home. The office buildings still need to be heated and cooled (though likely not as much), though there's a savings on lighting. There's a loss on lighting, heating and cooling homes (no more setting things to less-comfortable temperatures while at work, more lighting, more computers running, etc.) and on average everyone working from home is probably less efficient in terms of electricity usage than working in offices.

There is a gain in automobile emissions without commuting, but there's more delivery and thus more trucks and a lot of running about by delivery drivers of all stripes. It's probably a net gain, but it may not be significant.

The hobby everyone has now seems to be home improvement and landscape improvement. Outdoor improvements mean lawnmowers, weed whackers, etc. and a lot of those are still heavily polluting 4-cycle small engines (lawnmowers) and extremely heavily polluting 2-cycle engines (weed whackers, leaf blowers, etc.). I'll bet use of the small engines has gone up a lot. Those engines also pollute a lot.

We probably did have net emissions reduction, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was way smaller than the experts predicted.

Oddly enough, Mitt Romney's response to court packing yesterday was spot on.

Classic Failure Theater -- wait until you're in a position to not make a difference, then say the thing conservative voters want to hear.

Pretty sure almost every Dem nominee in 2020 said they would expand the court, so the time for Romney to be brave was during the 2020 campaign: he should have supported the GOP candidate to ensure the court was not packed. Further, he should have fought to make sure the Georgia special election that would have ensured a solid GOP majority. But no.

Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have been screaming that daily in the Senate and on TV.

They're the only two, then. The local NPR jazz station down here is running their Fund Drive and featuring a generic spot from jazz guitarist Pat Metheny (who played with Jaco Pastorius). He mentions the dire situations that musicians everywhere are going through now. Not once does he ever mention any sort of pushback, nor even the phrase "get back to normal."

I can't understand that at all. It's like everyone's just given up and treats this like it's a perfectly normal thing and there's nothing that can be done about it at all.

285 "I cannot imagine even the most quisling Republicans, not even Romney, or Murkowski, or Ryan, actually "reaching across the aisle" to vote with the Dems. Not for something like this."

I can easily imagine them voting with Democrats.

First, those 3 are not Republicans.  They are Democrats elected as Republicans.  And all part of the Deep State.

All the Democrat Party has to do is remind them that if they want to keep their job, they simply need to vote the way the Deep State wants.

If they refuse to vote the way the Deep State wants, they will be reminded that the Deep State controls the election process in every state in the country and if they can get rid of Donald Trump with no issue, they can get rid of these three easily as well.

None of them have any principles, so they will vote with the Democrats to keep their jobs.  And then go around making "the conservative case for court packing".
