— rdbrewer In response to recent criticism of the Ninth Circuit Maui judicial conference (hereinafter: "par-tay"), the Ninth Circuit explained:
The conference is authorized by law “for the purpose of considering the business of the courts and advising means of improving the administration of justice within the circuit.” [§ 28 U.S.C. Sec. 333] The conference fully adheres to these goals, providing an exceptional educational program and the opportunity to conduct numerous business meetings that further circuit governance.

If the whole schedule was for spouses and guests, it wouldn't specifically say 'spouses and guests' on this entry.

thats the guests schedule, if you click on the actual schedule link it is far more work oriented. it also states that government funds are not used for the leisure activities, so they probably come from the registration fees.
We should hit cases of government waste, but we should hit them with full disclosure.

If we want to slag them for holding their conference in HI instead of somewhere a bit less expensive in these difficult economic times then lets do that. But remember as well how we gleefully piled onto President Zero for putting a dent in Vegas travel and hurting a lot of hospitality workers. But if conference travel for judges works like it does in academia, the registration and travel is probably paid for by the employer. The "trick" is to have conferences in nice locations so that the hotel room and airfare for the "attendee" is paid for by the university. So, the marginal cost to bring a spouse is pretty much limited to the spouses airfare (after all you already have the hotel room). In most universites, we get at least one conference trip a year, as long as we have a paper on the program. I'd guess that judges are able to do a conference every year too on the taxpayer's dime.
Looks like they've put together a pretty good schedule of stuff for the the "spouses". But I bet that a lot of the "attendees" will be at those too.

Screw that though, you know how my wife stays busy when I'm at a conference? She doesn't come to said conference. Ditto when she goes to conferences (although sometimes I go down to the Hunting farm my friend owns to get drunk and shoot guns.)
In either case, no need to keep this shit in there. They just shouldn't come. I'm sure if this wasn't just a big excuse for some people to have a vacation the locations wouldn't be nearly as impressive either. (Last I checked, about 30 seconds ago, the 9th Circuit was located on the West Coast, why not just hold the damn conference in San Fran, San Diego, Portland, Seattle or any other city that could easily handle it?)

I'd like to see an analysis of the costs the gubmint incurred for this event compared to doing it in other Ninth Circuit venues, like Vegas, L.A., San Diego, Seattle or some other place less exotic. Most conferences are PRIVATE, not public. And everyone knows that many of them are to spend some company funds to do unproductive stuff and let people have a bit of a good time. But it's their money to do what they want, not ours.
The Ninth Circuit never meets in Hawaii. There are no Ninth Circuit hearings in Hawaii. NEVER. Do you understand "NEVER"? Do you understand "public dime"? Even though they have jurisdiction over Hawaii, they do not physically meet there. They meet only on the West Coast, Nevada and Alaska. That's where they are. Not Hawaii.

HH, I remembered a couple of more examples of the non-native tongue use of English by the Dog-Eater (that we spoken about on that ONT a few days back). There was the truly odd "wee wee'd up" that I've never heard from an American and his weird use of "precipice" as a good thing for his health scare. Not big, but very odd to a native English speaker. There are tons more but I still forget most of them. I felt my answer to you was very incomplete on the ONT and just wanted to give you a couple of more concrete examples.
