I liked 2001 okay since I was a big Arthur C. Clarke fan. It was a mishmash of a couple of his short stories. But I've watched it at home once or twice and the reaction from my college-age daughter is always, "I don't get why they put those monkeys in it."

EYES WIDE SHUT is a good movie. A conservative movie.
It says that marriage does not stop the roving-eye effect, in men or women. It says that whatever you fantasise about, it's best kept to yourself; you will have choices and temptations all your married life, and it's not wise to take the wrong path. It notes as an aside that the ultra-rich / -powerful aren't Nice People (true: Walter Duranty actually did attend orgies like that, with Alastair Crowley no less).
The message is: stay faithful, don't go places you shouldn't, and try not to get too mad at the other person's stray fantasies if the other person has no intention of acting on these

As soon as the astronauts approached, it beamed a powerful signal into space.
The explanation was that the pyramid had been placed on the moon millions of years earlier by something that had come through the galaxy looking for life. When something from the adjacent planet (Earth) developed enough technology to get to the moon, they pyramid notified ... something. The story ended with the open question of who was notified, and why, and what would happen next?
That was the basic premise that the 2001 screenplay developed from. The monkeys were put in later because hey, who doesn't like monkeys?

There's no reason to own FMJ. Just go to Youtube and watch all the Ermey scenes, instead.
Apparently, they were all ad libbed, and sometimes the second or third take because Kubrick and the camera crew were just dying at Ermey's expert profanity.

That was the one on the moon. In the book the one on Earth actually took control of their bodies and put their hands and wrist through their paces to see if the apes were good material to work with. It's always flat black in the movie but if I remember correctly, in the book a target appears and the monolith forces the apes to throw rocks at it until they get the idea.

WhatÂ’s that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke? Private Joker: No, sir! Colonel: What is it supposed to mean? Private Joker: I donÂ’t know, sir! Colonel: You donÂ’t know very much, do you? Private Joker: No, sir! Colonel: You better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant shit on you! Private Joker: Yes, sir! Private Joker: The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir! Colonel: Whose side are you on, son? Private Joker: Our side, sir!

Again, if I remember correctly, there was a force field on top of the mountain that only a nuclear weapon could get through so, of course, we used one on it. So they wanted to know when we could leave the atmosphere and had nuclear power.
Of course, that was when the aliens still had corporal bodies and needed to worry about competitors. By 2001 I don't think they cared.

I really just think this whole expos'e was just an excuse for the reporter and his crew to take a trip overseas and visit some hard-core strip clubs.

Hudson Hawk has the added defect that it could have been a good movie, if someone had had the courage to put the brakes on Bruce Willis the same way others have done with Robin Williams or Jim Carrey. There was a self-referential, self-mocking core there that could have been exploited to great effect (see Oceans 11 to....Oceans ad infinitum) and a unique Vatican and Da Vinci-themed McGuffin that was actually ahead of its time.
Of course, I liked French Connection II better than I, so I plead guilty to suspect tastes in cinema.

I figured it was more a marker of human evolution. Early man (monkee or pre-Homo erectus) discovered tools and could collaborate and control others. Next, Man could collaborate and control something else (machines). Next, Man could create artificial intelligence that developed its own consciousness. At that point Machine was "alive" and Man had evolved to create it. He had become "God." At that point higher beings found Man capable and welcomed him to the Higher Beings club. Man had evolved to the beginning of an endpoint and joined with the stars/heavens. Man had evolved to "gods" and the Monoliths were markers along the path.
One thing I loved about the film beyond its technical brilliance was the open interpretation the film invited. It just compels you to ask, "What does it mean?" Ultimately it's a thinking film where many interpretations are reasonable. It doesn't tell you the answer explicitly. It's art.

From Truman's link at @157
The memo is crystal clear on that point. It says that the decision has been made based solely on the “risk profile presented to the President.” If any other risks – no matter how minute – arose, they were “to be brought back to the President for his consideration.” This is ludicrous. It is wiggle room. It was Obama’s way of carving out space for himself in case the mission went bad. If it did, he’d say that there were additional risks of which he hadn’t been informed; he’d been kept in the dark by his military leaders.
Finally, the memo is unclear on just what the mission is. Was it to capture Bin Laden or to kill him? The White House itself was unable to decide what the mission was in the hours after the Bin Laden kill, and actually switched its language. The memo shows why: McRaven was instructed to “get” Bin Laden, whatever that meant.
President Obama made the right call to give the green light to the mission. But he did it in a way that he could shift the blame if things went wrong. Typical Obama. And typical of him to claim full credit for it, when he didnÂ’t do anything but give a vague nod, while putting his top military officials at risk of taking the hit in case of a bad turn.

It's a crutch. The reason why the sex scene happens in a horror movie just before someone gets killed is to key you up. It's easier to move you from the f*** response to the flight response than it is to move you straight to flight.

ALL they do over there is come up with prediction after prediction of Obama's reelection. Just whose side are they on, anyway?
-----
I predicted that to myself when they were bought out.

Me either, on my phone it switches from internal to external automatically when internal memory runs out and there's not a manual way to set one or the other.

Don't know how you pulled that rabbit out of your ass but I have no reason to argue with you about it.

As I recall, a "Big Stick" is a quiescently frozen Ice Pop.
Trouble is, when the heat is on, it melts.

I didn't expect Isabella Rosselini to show up in a movie like that but it helps to explain her recent bug-sex vids.

Sarah Palin has very cleverly picked up the "If I Wanted America to Fail" theme...

From hair? That was cut, therefore not having a follicle from which to extract DNA? WTF?

I love her sense of humor. Imagine her pitching the Green Porno idea.
The praying mantis vid is pretty good too.

Ever wonder why SCoaMF's speeches sound like a 3rd grade civics lesson, interspersed with marxist tripe? There's a scientific reason - http://scoamf.us/sW
Here is how it works. He asks you to imagine sixteen months, so you do. You follow where the storyteller
takes your mind and so you try to imagine thousands of miles, and continue following along where he leads
you. However, the conscious mind cannot imagine a million voices, the number is too big
132, though
Obama tricks you with the first two numbers into trying, by leading you down a path of increasingly difficult concepts to imagine
consciously. Notice how cleverly he leads you down a path which causes the
dominant hemisphere to be distracted, and tune out of trying to do exactly what he is asking you to do. Your mind tries to imagine a million and is distracted, sent off on an assignment it canÂ’t perform, tuning out, and exposing your subconscious mind. This is a calculated and pre-scripted hypnotic induction technique, and the only specific and logical explanation that makes any sense for what he is saying. Does this seem a bit too unlikely to be coincidence? What other purpose for this could there be for this language to be delivered exactly this way? What is he even talking about?
