'The Potato Revolution': A Little Freedom Breaks Out in Greece
— rdbrewer

Greeks started buying potatoes directly from farmers. Oh, the humanity!

The craze, which some are already starting to call the “Potato Revolution,” began in the northern town of Katerini two weeks ago. A group of local activists set up a website to allow people to order potatoes directly from local farmers, and then pick them up in a parking lot on the weekends. Their project was an instant hit. In the past two weeks, they’ve already sold 100 tons of potatoes, and inspired agricultural students in Thessaloniki to launch a similar program. Dozens more cities across Greece are planning to follow suit.

. . .

“A funny thing happened – the local supermarkets started slashing their prices”

But as LauraW says in email:

I'm sure there is some Greek bureaucrat searching furiously to discover what law they're breaking. . . . [A]ctually, it's a no-brainer that they are breaking some law or other. In a euro-socialist economy, if two parties to a transaction are both happy with the deal, and no one is getting bribed to allow it, it's illegal.

Sure, those potatoes must be inspected. You have to submit samples, and they have to be tested in a lab for deliciousness. Only then can the potatoes be certified as "potatoes." Greek bureaucrats will not allow you to trade in "dirtbacks" and "Idaho turdmuffins."

Posted by: Gristle Encased Head at March 15, 2012 04:40 PM (+lsX1)

Sure, if you pay to have all your produce independently inspected for quality... if you don't they can fine you.

Hey, they tried to pass the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 to require tens of thousands of dollars of testing for all small farmer privately owned sales as well.

But you're right, it hasn't passed, yet... although they keep trying to shut them down and regulate them out of existence.  So it's a non-issue; ignore them trying to destroy farmers markets because they haven't succeeded (quite yet).

I mean just because they're trying and proposing laws to do exactly this doesn't mean anything.  We only worried about what Congress does once they actually succeed in removing liberty and freedom from people... we shouldn't complain when they're just TRYING to do this.

Or did you have a different argument to justify your defense and apathy for Congress actually working on this very thing?  You think they'll never do it again?  Or is a $1 million fine for any infraction something your local farmers market can afford?

And, the attitude of Chicago democrats to the private sector has always been that look, there’s lots of big businesses in Chicago and they will always have to – you can put any amount of burden on them and they will always pay up. And, they won’t leave and we can milk them for as much as we want. That’s what a private sector is for.”

"

“If you have 10,000 regulations,” Winston Churchill said, “you destroy all respect for law.”

He was right. But Churchill never imagined a government that would add 10,000 year after year. ThatÂ’s what we have in America. We have 160,000 pages of rules from the feds alone. States and localities have probably doubled that. We have so many rules that legal specialists canÂ’t keep up. Criminal lawyers call the rules “incomprehensible.” They are. They are also “uncountable.” Congress has created so many criminal offenses that the American Bar Association says it would be futile to even attempt to estimate the total.

So what do the politicians and bureaucrats of the permanent government do? They pass more rules.

ThatÂ’s not good. It paralyzes life."

127 I saw on the news that an ad campaign involved giving some kind of devices to the homeless so they became roving wi-fi hotspots. They were paid to do it and were happy to, making money just by walking around. It was set to begin in NYC but a "homeless rights group" protested and managed to squash the program. WTF? "Homeless rights" means preventing these people from voluntarily making money for essentially doing what they would be doing anyway?? So they have the right to be prevented from doing something constructive that they want to do? The mind boggles.

We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

135 BTW, that huge food safety bill did pass in 2010.  They amended it to "exempt" some provisions of it for small farms but like all regulations, that exemption will be gone shortly and the agency will run amuck with it.

Also, like all regulations, it punishes the honest people and does nothing to cure any perceived problems that the bill was alleged to cure.

One of the drivers for that bill was the tainted peanut butter factory in GA.  They were already in violation of existing regulations that the FDA depended on paper to enforce.

As for regulations for farmers markets and roadside stands those are mostly State and Local. How strict they are and how they are enforced is a local issue.

Of course it is - it's the definition of an unregulated free market. Even better, there's a guy here that sells fresh fish out of an old school bus that he parks on the side of the highway. He's been doing it for years. Take a break from crying on your keyboard, not everyone is as ready to surrender as you are.

Posted by: Gristle Encased Head at March 15, 2012 04:55 PM (+lsX1)

The guy that did that here in CT was bringing in fresh lobster/fish from Maine and got arrested and got a big fine.  Not sure if he did any actual jail time.  He failed to get a CT Food Vendors License, A CT Shellfish License, A road side vendor permit from the town of Montville, etc.  He had literally about a dozen charges against him.  So I guess you could say at least in CT that the "free market" is regulated as all heck.

We have much less food-borne illness than in 1906, but that is a function of the increase in wealth and scientific progress, not as a result of the government.

201 The US Navy will double the number of counter-mine ships in the Persian Gulf to eight, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, the chief of naval operations, said today. The Navy will also send four more MH-60 mine-sweeping helicopters to the Gulf, Greenert told the Senate Armed Services Committee. Some Iranian officials have threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, transit point for a fifth of the oil traded worldwide. (AFP) ????I thought we were going to become more pacific centric and with smaller Navy?

Is that the story grandpappy told you while bouncing you on his knee, telling you all about those damned Yankees and their infernal rifles that you load on Sunday and shoot all week?

Nice story but it isn't true. Lincoln may have signed the beast into being, but its antecedents were well established in the federal government by the time Lincoln was elected.

212 When a government attempts to micromanage an economy, the economy will route around the damage and find a more efficient path.  Sadly, this more efficient economic activity is often criminalized.

It would be discriminatory against men, of course. ....Because us girls could just lie and say "Orgasm? What orgasm?" .....Lesbians could end up being tax free.

216 Here in the heartland we have lots of farmer's markets and roadside stands.  But we try not to call attention to them.

A friend who's a nurse also gardens and sells her produce at the markets.  She says she makes more in the summer from the garden than she does from nursing @$20+ per hour.

221 If I recall correctly, at the time of the fall of the USSR, the underground economy was 50% of the GDP.  It was the thing that was holding the economy up, as all the 5 year plan™ crap was not cutting it.

I would like to see the Greeks empower themselves, starting with the lowly tater (precious).  It is a start on breaking the power and stagnation of big brother govt.  This could spread all over.  Best of luck to us all.

224 The only problem with this is that it continues to erode whatever tax base the Greeks had and in doing so will end up having the Greeks defaulting on this weeks rescue plan.  Could be enough to start a fast crash instead of the controlled one they are trying for.
