— Ace @verumserum was just discussing this film. It just played on TCM -- but you can actually watch the whole thing below.
Gabriel was the brainchild of media titan William Randolph Hearst, whose "yellow journalism" helped start the Spanish American War. By 1933, Jonathan Alter explains in "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope," "Hearst believed that the country needed a dictator but he wasn't sure FDR knew how to fill the role." So with this film, Hearst "set out to show Roosevelt the way."Gabriel's fictional president, Judson C. Hammond, begins as an unflattering amalgam of Warren Harding and Herbert Hoover, a party hack more interested in bedding his comely assistant than in dealing with his country's economic woes.
But after Hammond is gravely injured in a car crash, the archangel Gabriel visits him in the hospital and imbues the comatose chief executive with the holy spirit of presidential activism. Hammond awakens as a man transformed. "I think, gentlemen, that you forget I am still the president of these United States," he tells Congress, "and it is within the rights of the president to declare the country under martial law!"
Hammond dissolves Congress, forcibly implements a ban on foreclosures, and creates an "Army of Construction" giving a job to every unemployed American.
He authorizes a special army unit to fight gangsters, several of whom are convicted via military tribunal, then shot by a firing squad with the Statue of Liberty visible in the background. "We have in the White House a man who's enabled us to cut the red tape of legal procedures," the presiding general notes approvingly.
...
Then, with his work on Earth done, the president ascends into Heaven.
FDR was delighted and wrote to Hearst that "I think it is an intensely interesting picture and should do much to help."
@verumserum says it's as weird and creepy and prog-porn as it sounds -- he says he kept waiting it for it to get less weird (I guess-- to explain late in the film that fascism is not, in fact, a panacea) but it never does.
The column I linked above notes the "unholy" fusion of secular religion and progressive politics.
Good thing we're more enlightened than that, now.
I haven't watched it yet; I don't know if I can devote 1:25 to this piece of fascist shit, even as a curiosity.
This curiosity, though, does demonstrate how close we are to fascism at any time. It's such a temptation for those without an appreciation of The American Way.
But, again: Thankfully we're more enlightened than that now.
Bigger version here.
Some clips via @verumserum:
Post-kangaroo-court execution of the bad guys.
The angel Gabriel turns the corrupt, inept president into a a pro-fascist progressive.
Now progressive fascist president declares Jeffersonian Democracy and also martial law.

Hardly the weirdest, sounds like an Aaron Sorkin script, or some college project.
I watched a short film at the Daily Kos about Texas seceding, then becoming a theocracy and killing anyone who wasn't Christian or white. The movie is about a Muslim and a black man ecscaping their torture camp.
The weirdest by far is English language North Korean propaganda. You can find most of the videos at Youtube, they're funny as hell, all kinds of sexual innuendo and other weirdness

The nazzies had the goods on Lindbergh, as he found twoo wuv there and fathered some children to prove it. I can't say whether he was enthusiastically pro-Hitler, or just rubishly anti-international-bankers, which you could pick up anywhere in the twenties, like from Hank Ford or the inventor of the Royal Silent-Flush.
But his wife, oh Lordy: Anne Morrow Lindbergh was as perfect a poetic Mussolini fascist as the hemisphere ever produced. It was The Wave of The Future. And they dressed so well.

Will go to war to get our money back. Agree to stop rearmament as a way to balance your budgets and destroy your military weapons. Of course you guys do it first pay us back, than will destroy ours.

After the war with Hannibal the office of Dictator fell out of favor and the Romans didn't resort to it again until Sulla named himself Dictator for Life. Sulla took the opportunity to kill the shit out of his opposition and then retire in peace. Caesar got the title for himself and tried to win hearts and minds.
* Sometimes a Dictator would be appointed to preside over elections if both consuls had died in office.

A strong middle class is absolutely required to keep totalitarianism/communism/fascism from taking over popular imagination.
What a surprise that the current administration has been relentless in destroying the middle class, its income, its jobs, and its spirit too (roping more and more people into taking food stamps and other "benefits")

Read his thoughts on Julius Caesar and Sulla. Before Mark Antony, he was pretty ardent in opposing them--hence the Goldwater quote (paraphrasing Cicero) "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. Henry Ford fellow-travelled for a while: he sent the complete Model T plant, complete with supervisors(!) as a gift to the Soviet bipples, when he was done with it. Then he got some nice medals from von Ribbentropf, so he's a little hard to pin down.
Studebaker, American as they ever got (and headed during the Difficult Times by a gentleman from Huntsville, who couldn't face reorganization and shot himself neatly), had a family-sized car called a Dictator. Because in 1927, dictators were pretty highly thought of. In 1938, When Hitler had just spoiled things for everyone, it became the Commander.

No Drinking
No taking gods name in vain
No Gays
No Lesbians
No Women's Rights
No Miranda Rights
No Freedom of expression
No Music
No Dancing
No Jury of Your Peers
No Healthcare
No Welfare
No Tolerance for opposing views
No Denying Muhammad
No Tolerance of Atheism
No Trail Lawyers suing
No Class Action Lawsuit Winnings
No Environmental Protection
No Abortion on Demand
The list goes on and on....
...Yet the liberal idiots in this country are bending over backwards to give in to them...
It seems to me that liberal morons have no clue what the world would be like for them if the Islamists take over, yet they are tripping over themselves to accommodate the rise of Islamic Rule.
In a very twisted and round about way, if obama wins, and we know what he thinks about the beautiful sounds of islam...if that stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure wins, it may lead to the extermination of the liberals in this country.
After all, once they wipe those "dirty joooos" off the face of the earth, who is next?
And they bitch about conservatives and how we want to take away their fill in the blank.
Hilarious Irony.

Saki (Hector Hugh Munro), the famously acerbic Tory humorist, had a very different take on a similar scenario in his "Ministers of Grace." (Available online in a number of venues, including here http://haytom.us/showarticle.php?id=43) Let's just say that his Conservative take on angelic intervention in politics doesn't show the same optimism as Hearst. (One of the fun things in this one is identifying which real-life Edwardian celebrity is being parodied - Churchill, for example, turns up early in the story in a very unflattering portrait.)

157 fyi, the Fascists were also socialists.
Yep, Ace...they were.
I still get amazed, when I see people try to argue about this.
Small 'f' - fascism...was sold to people, as being 'Unifying'.
But it was basically, forced unity...and the forceable repression of any dissent...totalitarianism, sold as 'Unity'.
The word, 'fascist', comes from fasces...or a bundle of sticks.
The bundle of sticks, or rods...was an ancient Greek icon for "In Unity, Strength'.
The two things are unrelated, politically...but the Fascists co-opted the old meme of 'Strength in Unity', to force their will upon people, as socialists often do.
Large 'F' - Fascists...practiced forced unity, in a totalitarian fashion....taking it upon themselves to proclaim what constituted 'Unity'.
So it really betrays someone's knowledge of history, when they try to declare that 'fascism' was just a political party.
There is more to it, than that.
So sayeth, wheatie.

Yep. I'm sure.
It dates back to when the Greek city-states were all separate.
There was a push, to unify....to defend the peninsula they called home...from people like, the Romans.
The Romans conquered Greece eventually.
But the Romans prized the Greeks knowledge, and adopted a lot of it.
Having a Greek slave, was considered a status symbol in Rome...and they were often put to work as tutors and political advisors.

In essence, the NSDAP was a far-left socialist party with a hard-on for, among other things, bankers, stock exchanges, capitalism, and lending at interest, all of which of course became convolved with anti-Semitism. The socialist aspect was feathered after the Night of the Long Knives, when the SA leadership was arrested during a gay orgy and wiped out.
The SA had to go because it was the wellspring of the far-left sentiment, and scared the shit out of the industrialists (and also the Army, which it dwarfed), who insisted that the SA be reined in before they would support Hitler (as opposed to the Communists, the KPD, which was effectively the only alternative).
Roehm, head of the SA, was (IIRC) the only Party member who treated Hitler as a peer (the familiar "du"), could have been a rival for power, and adamantly opposed Hitler's efforts to move away from pushing hard-left policies.

At one time, fascism was considered the wave of the future. Many Americans (including FDR) were highly enamored of it. "Government-business partnership" just sounded so ... sensible. Hell, you'll often hear the phrase today, especially among leftists.
Of course, they then rail against "big business," apparently not realizing that there is no point in the government partnering with every dry cleaning place. If a business isn't big, it doesn't have enough economic clout to be worth bothering with.

oh man, this would be the perfect place to have a Drunken Scrabble tournament
Drunken Scrabble - like ordinary Scrabble, but you get to make up fake words, and if you are challenged on a fake word, you have to make up a definition for that word that sounds plausible (and damn funny). If it passes muster you get to keep the word.

311...So that's where the Romans got it from? How did the punitive association arise, because that's how the Romans used it: kind of like a judge putting a black handkerchief on his head before passing sentence of death.
-----------
The Greeks used the 'bundle of sticks' as a symbol of their Unity.
Put an axeblade on a bundle of rods...to use in battle...to signify this.
The Romans used this same symbol....to *force* unity on their conquered lands.
That is how it first started to have a negative connotation.

"Rain" was made the same year as "Gabriel". Early version of Sadie Thompson, with Joan Crawford. Good movie.. he's great as usual in it.
As a Walter Houston fan I also love "Kongo"-1932.. remake of "West of Zanzibar" made four years later tries to outdo the Lon Chaney original in morbidity.

Originally meant as bonds, they evolved into a currency used as legal tender. As there was no control over the amount to be printed, the value of the assignats exceeded that of the confiscated properties. This caused massive hyperinflation. In the beginning of 1792, they had lost most of their nominal value. In 1796, the Directoire issued Mandats, a currency in the form of land warrants to replace the assignats, although these too quickly failed.
Doesn't everybody know that???

His heir, the Prince Imperial, was killed in the Zulu War after Isandlwana.
A British officer who abandoned him to his fate and managed to ride away to safety was so shunned by other officers and society that he killed himself. (Destitute in Paris IIRC.)

There is a wall of lies built so well and so strong that I don't know if we can get through it.
The public never knew FDR was sick. I just realized how big a conspiracy it took to hide from the public that FDR couldn't walk and that at the end he was dying. But the media hid it. They hid it and he died and there was no protest over the hiding. Why wasn't there a public out cry by the people for being decieved? Why didn't they care?
If they could do that then. Why didn't I realize that they can and will keep Obama in office and there is probably nothing we can do about it. They own the perception of truth. They create the illusions and it doesn't matter what is happening in the world. The news is controled to show only what they want them to know.
No matter how much dirt there is. No matter how many Ambassadors die. They have their slaves so drugged on a Friday night and the millions of non-thinking zombies living hellish lives and convinced to vote for more of it... They control the knowledge. They control the history. They control the people with no brains of their own.
They taught them how not to think. And the people thank them for not making them think.
We thought we were free but were not. They control everything.

I went yet another direction (working with another), and have the two axes as "Secular vs. Divine" (believing that "ultimate" morality can be defined by humans versus believing that "ultimate" morality is already defined by an external source and can only be interpreted by humans) and "Exclusive vs. Inclusive" (believing that those who do not follow the "one true path" do not "really" qualify as human beings versus believing that everyone always qualifies as human being, even when they embrace another, absolutely contradictory, belief system).
Further, it should be understood that as a political system derives from an ideological system, an economic system is created by a political system in accordance with the definitions provided by the ideological system.
That approach provides not just the "whats" of the varying views, but the "hows" and "whys" they exist.
