The Weirdest Pro-Fascist Progressive Fantasia You'll Ever See?

@verumserum was just discussing this film. It just played on TCM -- but you can actually watch the whole thing below.

It's... creepy.

Gabriel was the brainchild of media titan William Randolph Hearst, whose "yellow journalism" helped start the Spanish American War. By 1933, Jonathan Alter explains in "The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope," "Hearst believed that the country needed a dictator but he wasn't sure FDR knew how to fill the role." So with this film, Hearst "set out to show Roosevelt the way."

Gabriel's fictional president, Judson C. Hammond, begins as an unflattering amalgam of Warren Harding and Herbert Hoover, a party hack more interested in bedding his comely assistant than in dealing with his country's economic woes.

But after Hammond is gravely injured in a car crash, the archangel Gabriel visits him in the hospital and imbues the comatose chief executive with the holy spirit of presidential activism. Hammond awakens as a man transformed. "I think, gentlemen, that you forget I am still the president of these United States," he tells Congress, "and it is within the rights of the president to declare the country under martial law!"

Hammond dissolves Congress, forcibly implements a ban on foreclosures, and creates an "Army of Construction" giving a job to every unemployed American.

He authorizes a special army unit to fight gangsters, several of whom are convicted via military tribunal, then shot by a firing squad with the Statue of Liberty visible in the background. "We have in the White House a man who's enabled us to cut the red tape of legal procedures," the presiding general notes approvingly.

Then, with his work on Earth done, the president ascends into Heaven.

FDR was delighted and wrote to Hearst that "I think it is an intensely interesting picture and should do much to help."

@verumserum says it's as weird and creepy and prog-porn as it sounds -- he says he kept waiting it for it to get less weird (I guess-- to explain late in the film that fascism is not, in fact, a panacea) but it never does.

The column I linked above notes the "unholy" fusion of secular religion and progressive politics.

Good thing we're more enlightened than that, now.

I haven't watched it yet; I don't know if I can devote 1:25 to this piece of fascist shit, even as a curiosity.

This curiosity, though, does demonstrate how close we are to fascism at any time. It's such a temptation for those without an appreciation of The American Way.

But, again: Thankfully we're more enlightened than that now.

It is generally seen as the foundational document for the fascist side of progressivism -- one that basically took over the Democrat Party for keeps in 2008. I just got a call from the RNC about attending at the Alum Creek Amphitheater.  Right next to Otterbein College (auld Oooootter - bine!)  I have to RSVP to get in.  I might just go.

After reading Amity Schlaes "The Forgotten Man", I realized there was a whole lotta history I never learned.  This movie sounds like things were much worse in the 1930's than I ever knew.

runninrebel, what kind of interval training do you recommend?  Currently I do interval training on the elliptical machine at the Y and quite honestly it seems kinda boring.  Should I increase the resistance or try some other machine?  What do you do?

458 Here's one fun thing: France had stolen all the land from the Church to pay their massive debts. But how they did this was interesting; because they couldn't sell all the land at once, they created paper currency, assignats, based on the ultimate net value to one day be realized of all land seized. So it was currency but sort of backed (sort of) with, in theory, a fractional piece of the ownership of confiscated land. Anyway, the government of COURSE began inflating the shit out of this money, because the "people" demanded it. And then people who used silver and gold (like merchants, who traded with farmers, silver for wheat ) would say "No, there's no way I'm giving you a bushel of wheat for one assignat; the money's been inflated to the point where it's not worth one fifth that." So the government, of course, passed a law that said you HAD to sell the wheat for the supposed "value" of the assignat, even though it was greatly diminished in value. So what happens is that merchants cannot actually cover their own costs -- they're receiving low-value currency but paying high-value currency for the wheat -- and they resort to the black market and stuff, and of course they get arrested and then beheaded as criminals against the state. It's wild stuff, man. Pretty much all the Really Bad Ideas we are still vexed by all started there.

The assignats were issued after the confiscation of church properties in 1790 because the government was bankrupt. The government thought that the financial problems could be solved by printing certificates representing the value of church properties. Assignats were used to successfully retire a significant portion of the national debt as they were accepted as legitimate payment by domestic and international creditors. Certain precautions not taken concerning their excessive reissue and comingling with general currency in circulation caused hyperinflation.

Originally meant as bonds, they evolved into a currency used as legal tender. As there was no control over the amount to be printed, the value of the assignats exceeded that of the confiscated properties. This caused massive hyperinflation. In the beginning of 1792, they had lost most of their nominal value. In 1796, the Directoire issued Mandats, a currency in the form of land warrants to replace the assignats, although these too quickly failed.

The trouble with wheat set this whole thing off. Two bad things happened at once: First, liberals had been pushing for a long time to liberalize trade in wheat, so that farmers weren't banned from selling to foreign countries and required to sell to Paris (at a lower price). They finally got that. And it would have all worked except there was a disastrous wheat harvest the year before the revolution (or two years before). So what happened is that the people blamed the liberalized trade laws for the lack of cheap (mandated cost) wheat. Now we end liberalization and go back to state control. She probably said that (or is alleged to have said it; she didn't really say it) during that period.

After Napoleon got defeated, Louis XVI's brother became Louis XVIII (the royalists considered the Dauphin to beu Louis XVII). Then Napoleon came back for his "100 days." Then Louis XVIII got the throne back. He died and was replaced by Charles X. The people hated him, so the trone was passed from the house of Bourbon to the house of Orleans, and Louis-Philippe took over. Then the French kicked him out and set-up the 2nd Republic. They installed Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as President for life. Louis-Napoleon then declared himself emperor to create the 2nd Empire. After the 2nd Empire fell due to the Franco-Prussian war, the people were inclined to go back to a King, but infighting between the houses of Orleans and Bourbon (which still goes on today), lead to the 3rd Republic. This lasted until WWII, when the Vichy government was set-up. After WWII, the 4th Republic was set-up but collapsed in the late 50's and was replaced by Charles De Gaulle and the 5th Republic. Next up: the First caliphate of the Franks...

The Greeks used the 'bundle of sticks' as a symbol of their Unity. Put an axeblade on a bundle of rods...to use in battle...to signify this.

The Romans used this same symbol....to *force* unity on their conquered lands. That is how it first started to have a negative connotation.

There is a wall of lies built so well and so strong that I don't know if we can get through it.

The public never knew FDR was sick.  I just realized how big a conspiracy it took to hide from the public that FDR couldn't walk and that at the end he was dying.  But the media hid it.  They hid it and he died and there was no protest over the hiding.  Why wasn't there a public out cry by the people for being decieved?  Why didn't they care?

If they could do that then.  Why didn't I realize that they can and will keep Obama in office and there is probably nothing we can do about it.  They own the perception of truth.  They create the illusions and it doesn't matter what is happening in the world. The news is controled to show only what they want them to know.

No matter how much dirt there is.  No matter how many Ambassadors die.  They have their slaves so drugged on a Friday night and the millions of non-thinking zombies living hellish lives and convinced to vote for more of it...  They control the knowledge.  They control the history.  They control the people with no brains of their own. 

They taught them how not to think.  And the people thank them for not making them think.

We thought we were free but were not.  They control everything.

I'd be particularly interested in knowing WHICH parts of the script Frank Roosevelt worked on, regardless of whether those parts made it into the screen version. But Ace: you and verumserum both are being simplistic as hell about all this. Obviously, once you've ASKED or DEMANDED dictatorial powers from Congress and received them, as President Judd Hammond does in this fiction, by definition you're a dictator. But Roosevelt didn't do that, indeed no president, of either major party, has acted as a dictator, even though at least several (I think most) acted fraudulently on repeated occasions, and at least 3 committed provably criminal acts ... but for Nixon's Caveat. The reason I bother to raise all this is because, having been in and around the edges of this blog for almost 6 years now, I've never seen a better opportunity to illustrate the folly of the Right's great Obama fable about use of fiat power. What you've done here, Ace, is to illustrate why Obama is essentially unbeatable, at least by Republicans, and would become another FDR but for the 22d Amendment: because he DOESN'T pursue dictatorial power, at least not in domestic non-national security areas. What he does is invite his opponents to argue and reason with him, and early on, the Republicans having done that a couple of times and learned from those experiences that it pretty much only worked to limit their ability to deliver on promises to their funders, effectively ceded prima facia CREDIBILITY to Obama on a wnole range of issues he otherwise wouldn't have been able to gain without spending decades in Congress. This is also why Romney's 'last best hope', the debates, is a pipe dream. There probably isn't a single person in the entire country, certainly outside the Dem party in which he's most vulnerable, who can beat him in the presidential election game. Tell the truth, Ace: you KNOW damn well that this is why every other CREDIBLE GOP presidential nominee sat this one out and ceded the nomination to a guy no one likes, and for a lot of very sound reasons.

I went yet another direction (working with another), and have the two axes as "Secular vs. Divine" (believing that "ultimate" morality can be defined by humans versus believing that "ultimate" morality is already defined by an external source and can only be interpreted by humans) and "Exclusive vs. Inclusive" (believing that those who do not follow the "one true path" do not "really" qualify as human beings versus believing that everyone always qualifies as human being, even when they embrace another, absolutely contradictory, belief system).

Further, it should be understood that as a political system derives from an ideological system, an economic system is created by a political system in accordance with the definitions provided by the ideological system.

That approach provides not just the "whats" of the varying views, but the "hows" and "whys" they exist.

571 Cicero got whacked by the Triumvirate ( the formal one) not by a Dictator. Cicero got whacked by the Second Triumvirate, Octavian, Anthony, and one other of Caesar's generals, and there was no formal one, it was an informal term to describe 3 powerful men who collaborated to dominate government politics. The first Triumvirate was the Populare political alliance of Caesar, Cassius and Pompey, the 3 of which totally dominated Republican politics and were able to consistently choose successive Consuls because of their combined clout. The second Triumvirate was a mock-up of the first and political of course, but really more of a military alliance really. It was created in the midst of violence and open factional civil warfare after Caesar's assassination by the Senate, a good dozen years after Cassius's death sparked the breakdown of the alliance between Caesar and Pompey which led to civil war. Read his thoughts on Julius Caesar and Sulla. Before Mark Antony, he was pretty ardent in opposing them Read Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician by Anthony Everett. Cicero's private writings show he was something of a hypocrite, certainly he was a master of rhetoric who posed as a moderate and flirted with populare rhetoric, but he was optimate in aspiration. He was basically like Jonah Goldberg's "Shirpa Populare". He wrote lovely treatises (which were heavily edited), but in practice it seems his MO was to reconcile populare rhetoric with optimate privilege. He certainly loathed Caesar, but I think it was as much or more a matter of culture, and social/tribal affiliation as anything. Cicero yearned to be a part of the Smart Set socially, the Betters, the aristocrats with dignified family history, which he could never quite be a part of or respected by because of his own parochial heritage. Caesar was the social reformer, who was born into that aristocrat line and then renounced it for prominence of the self-made variety. In the end, Cicero himself came to view the Optimates as no different when it came to the reasons he ostensibly hated Caesar, and a tyrannous Pompeian dictatorship was no less likely than a tyrannous Caesarian one, and his own political visions were damned either way. I think he overestimated Caesars inclination toward tyranny, but up until just before the very end he certainly underestimated that of the Optimates. Cicero hated and feared many of Caesars Populare allies and associated Caesar with them, but Caesar was fairly moderate and famously consensus-seeking in his own right, and went out of his way throughout his entire life trying to win over Cicero, whose political philosophies he seemed to be quite a fan of on paper. At any rate, that book (among others) accurately portrays very significant differences between Caesar and Sulla. Sulla was an optimate and damn near killed Caesar, who spent his childhood in exile hiding from Sulla. Much of Caesar's dictatorship was in stark contrast to Sulla's dictatorship and the practices associated with it. Caesar was always very eager to prove he was no Sulla and never would be.
