The Wit and Wisdom of P. J. O'Rourke [OregonMuse]

ORourkeQuote.jpg

This truth should be axiomatic to everyone, especially those in government. Of course, it's not.
Of course, this is an open thread, so there's no such thing as being OT.

OTL maybe, but not OT.

I was listening to a Dr. on the Radio be interviewed yesterday about O'Care...

He was all for it... saying that because of O'care, demand would increase, and as everyone knows that when demand increases you'll get more Doctors because theres more demand!

Apparently Doctors do not have to take any economics classes.... because he did not realize that with the Government contolling PRICES... the mechanism that causes supply and demand to be linked, is not there...

Of course it is true.  When Republicans are in power the commies label it has "crony capitalism".  The MFM has made sure that the name has stuck even though it has zero to do with capitalism. When the Democrats are in power it is feeding needed industry for stimulus and the MFM calls it good.

In my book the proper label for it is crony corruption, no matter who is doing it.

25 I have a relative, very high up in the healthcare biz, an otherwise "conservative" person, who is loving some Obamacare. Why? The absolute chaos that is currently healthcare pricing and payments. Who made the mess? Well, the same people who are now hoping to fix it by eventually going to a single payer. You can't talk this person out of the illogic of this position, the notion this isn't going to make everything better just isn't going to be entertained.

And when this so-called Doctor finds the falsity in his assumption, then what?  Will he agitate for a change?  Will he go on strike?

Just why does he thing he deseverves more money?  The law of supply and demand?  I think that is counter to what Barack Hussein Soetoro Obama Jones thinks.  I think you lose this argument Doctor.

And if the law says he must accept it (because our betters in the Congress and the Courts say so), then just who is this Doctor to question the government?  What does he think he is, some kind of sovereign citizen?

This fool is about to find out just what he has bought, like the other fools who clamored for "social justice" and  "spreading around the wealth".

Careful there, Doctor Stupid, you may find yourself aligning with those nasty teabaggers that I am sure you revile, one of these days.  One of these days.

50 Undertake a program of Constitutional Amendments to re-establish the rules the way they were intended, to take it out of the hands of activist judges.  It is required in many areas, like the general welfare and commerceclauses, start with what federal taxes are and the limits on them.  You should be able to get that past two thirds of the states, and you know how congresscritters like to appear to be against taxes.  Con. Amendments shouldn't be undertaken lightly but this would not a change from the Constitution but a change back to the Constitution.   At the very least, the country would benefit from an ongoing multi-facieted discussion of the constitution.   All the best for Independence Day.

Owners of Cisco/Linksys home routers got a nasty shock this week, when their devices automatically downloaded a new operating system, which locked out device owners. After the update, the only way to reconfigure your router was to create an account on Cisco's "cloud" service, signing up to a service agreement that gives Cisco the right to spy on your Internet use and sell its findings, and also gives them the right to disconnect you (and lock you out of your router) whenever they feel like it.

The current policy also allows Cisco to discontinue your access to your router if you download pornography, or if someone complains about you, without a court order, evidence or a chance to state your case and face your accuser.

@73

A bit more here:

a number of Cisco customers began reporting problems with three specific Linksys-branded routers. When owners of the E2700, E3500, or E4500 attempted to log in to their devices, they were asked to login/register using their “Cisco Connect Cloud” account information.

Linksys now being a Cisco brand. Those models have automatic updates enabled by default and got hit.  Beyond those models, don't know.

However, if you've got one of their routers, disabling auto-updates probably isn't a bad idea.

101 Tavis Smiley

The Organized Left promotes, mis-educates and subsidizes the idiots among black Americans (see: SCOAMF), planting the idea that we really are inferior.  Conversely, the OL plants the idea that the more intelligent among our number are the idiots. See: Clarence Thomas.

They can't quite find a way to do this with our public geniuses, like Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele and Dr. Ben Carson, so they ignore them.  Pretty neat trick, eh?

From Parliament Of Whores, Chapter on  Agriculture Policy:

"Getting a cow in a family way is not accomplished, as I would have thought, with a bull and some Barry White tapes in a heart-shaped stall.  It's like teenage pregnancy, only more so. The bull isn't even around to get the cow knocked-up. Instead, there's a liquid-nitrogen Thermos bottle full of frozen bull sperm (let's not even think about how they get that) and a device resembling a cross between a gigantic hypodermic needle and the douche nozzle of the gods.

George got a real farmer to come by and actually do the honors. So while I held the cow's head and George held the cow's middle, the real farmer, Pete, took the bovine marital aid and inserted it into a very personal and private place of the cow's. Then Pete squirted liquid dish soap on himself and inserted his right arm into an even more personal and private place of the cow's, all the way up to the elbow. Pete did this not in order to have Robert Mapplethorpe take his photograph, but in order to grasp the inseminator tube through the intestine wall and guide the tube into themouth of the uterus. It's an alarming thing to watch, and I'm glad to say I didn't watch it because I was at the cow's other end. But I'll tell you this, I will never forget the look on that cow's face.

The same look—and for the same reason—appeared on my own face when I began reading the 1990 omnibus farm bill. Every five years or so the U.S. Congress votes on a package of agricultural legislation that does to the taxpayer what Pete and George and I did to the cow."

118 The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability. Liberals have invented whole college majors— psychology, sociology, women's studies— to prove that nothing is anybody's fault. No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you'd have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view.

121 My fav by PJ: “A John Wayne movie,” I said. “That’s what you [Europeans] were going to say, wasn’t it? We think war is a John Wayne movie. We think life is a John Wayne movie—with good guys and bad guys, as simple as that. Well, you know something, Mister Limey Poofter? You’re right. And let me tell you who those bad guys are. They’re us. WE BE BAD. “We’re the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We’re three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car wreck and descended from a stock market crash on our mother’s side. You take your Germany, France and Spain, roll them all together and it won’t give us room to park our cars. We’re the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in Cap d’Antibes. And we’ve got an American Express card credit limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go. “You say our country’s never been invaded? You’re right, little buddy. Because I’d like to see the needle-dicked foreigners who’d have the guts to try. We drink napalm to get our hearts started in the morning. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying ‘Cheerio.’ Hell can’t hold our sock-hops. We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, fuck longer and buy more things than you know the names of. I’d rather be a junkie in a New York City jail than king, queen and jack of all you Europeans. We eat little countries like this for breakfast and shit them out before lunch.”
