There's No Problem That Can't Be Solved Given a Sufficient Application of Wolves
— Ace

18 Sure wolves are great unless you are a rancher trying to raise beef or buffalo up in that country. Do you know that the ranchers are not even allowed to protect their herds from these top predators? Civilizations forever have been trying to rid their lands of wolves. You can read stories from every ancient civilization back to the start of writing. We actually achieve it, and the loony lefties re-invoke it on the ranchers adjacent to the park. I say lets re-introduce wolves to downtown Wash DC, and make it a crime to defend yourself.

31 That video is great. Illustrative of the points I often make in the meat world. People will see a dried up creek bed and declare AGW the reason, they'll stop seeing a particular songbird and blame cat predation, they'll note an especially wet spring and extrapolate it to future floods. There's so much connectivity and variance that it's yet one more of those situations where when someone declares themselves as "knowing" the cause and effect I just roll my eyes. The first time. If they persist then I mildly humiliate them with basic Earth Science questions. Nothing funnier than watching a guy bloviate for half an hour on the natural world then taking him to the beach/pond/woods and exposing his ignorance. Sometimes in front of his wife and kids.

Wolves, since their importation, have had deep impacts on the banks of streams and ponds in North America.  Digging into banks to create dens, and in search of their sustenance which include roots and some invertebrates, this semi-aquatic animal increases swamps and wetlands by breaking down banks in a way that range-raised cattle never could. Initially introduced as a source of pelts to replace the populations of over-trapped beavers, changes in attitudes about the wearing of fur of rodents means that the only real check on wolf populations is predation by members of PETA to make shock movies about the cruelty of modern hunters and trappers.

51 Wolves are good, as are Pumas (cougars, mountain lions).
Humans have become lazy, fat, and complacent.
Humans should be afraid of the dark again.

Of course, if we are going to re introduce predators into the environment, we need to be armed. Survival of the fittest, baby!

56 That's weird - I was stuck behind some old fart  here in town driving a little beat up plymouth with a couple save the wolves bumper stickers on the back. Looking up I saw the car was divided in half with a big wire mesh thing like in a cop car.

Then a friggin' wolf stood up and stuck it's nose out the window! A big, white, friggin' wolf that took up the entire back seat. It took a sniff out of each window, and then laid back down.

Wonder what the divider was for?

71 Had a talk with rancher in Farson Wyoming once about a wolf that he lassoed from a snowmobile while it was chasing his spring calves. No the wolves didn't stay within the boundaries of Yellostone as all the biologists claimed they would. He kept it in a horse trailer alive until the game officials came, killed it and claimed it to be a wolf-like creature but definitely not a wolf. The level of crap fed to the public about wolves is astonishing. Here's another one...wolves don't kill for fun as anyone with a spotting scope can tell you after watching them chase down elk after elk on the Elk Refuge just outside Jackson Hole then leave the dead elk to kill another.

76 Similar "unpredictable" results have occurred whenever apex predators are removed from the food chain. The worldwide over fishing of sharks, for example, has led to a large increase in sub-predator species which has in turn had a punishing result down the food chain and likely concomitant impact on the marine eco-system. The only people benefiting from this are scientists who get large grants to study the affects of what our ancestors knew generations ago, don't fuck with the balance of nature.

78 It makes sense to me practically. When we move the (only 2) horses from one pasture to another, or open access to one part of the creek or another, the effects on the streambed/vegetation are dramatic after a week or so. Anything that altered the behavior of herds of deer would have similar effects. I don't think it happened over night, but it sounds legit enough to me.

90 I hope that y'all will support my determined crusade to reintroduce apex predators everywhere in their former North American range. To include in my wonderful home state of Commiefornia, where wolves and grizzly bears sadly no longer roam.

I ask you, is that a fit state of affairs for a place which prides itself on its progressive environmental credentials? No! The large carnivores MUST be reinstated here. In large numbers. All through the state.

Here in the eastern SF Bay Area, for instance, there is a "Grizzly Peak". It used to have actual grizzlies on it. They are all gone. Now it is instead infested with legions of an introduced.non-native species, to wit, liberal Democratic yuppie environmentalists.

I don't know about you, but I am quivering in my chair at the thought of the fun and satisfaction the good green folk of Grizzly Peak and surrounding areas will feel when they find six hundred pounds of hungry bear tearing their garage door off of its hinges at 2AM. It will be an absolute delight.

Not least because these folks are not too big on guns and typically don't own any. Not that you would ever need a gun around a huge bear. Would you?

106 @83 , If you google " Sundre feral horse cull " it'll give you a picture of the problem . The feral ( wild ) horse population in the area has exploded over the last six or seven years . There's still plenty of wolves in the area but I don't think they target the horses as much as say , moose because the horses herd up and can scare off a pack . I hunt the area and have had a few run ins with the horses , they can be very aggressive in the wrong situation . Buggers make one hell of a mess in the backcountry as well .

Why you ask? No not greenies, but hunters, they want bigger game. There will be hell to pay if that population ever gets high enough that people start hitting them with cars. Elk are a lot bigger than deer.

110 great video! i have a hawk who comes every day to sit on a fence post to scope things out. this morning he hopped down and stood in the morning dew grass. we also have several tom turkeys with hens come down off the hill each morning. they hang out on the flat by the barn and gobble, play and lie in the sun before one takes off and the others follow back up the hill. in may, the hens will bring their babies down.

205 There's no such thing as "balance of nature". Nature doesn't exist in some delicate state, ready to teeter out of control if you make one wrong move. If you perturb on equilibrium it will settle into another. Not a big deal.

210 Wolves really do work magic in sufficient numbers. The most amazing thing wasn't that they change the course of rivers. What amazed me was when they flashed the pictures of the animals you get more of. Around the 2:40 mark they noted you get more badgers and showed a pic of that critter.

And I was awed.

Because not only do you get more badgers. The badgers you get are European badgers.

American badgers look like this.

Not like the critter you get more of in Yellowstone cuz of wolves. Amazing.

214 197 Iowa intentionally wiped out all their German heritage (except in the Amana Colonies, which were a separatist religious sect) when my grandfather was a boy. Indianapolis also had a lot of German heritage, but it all got thrown away in the first part of the 20th century. Posted by: HR at March 15, 2014 07:00 PM (hO8IJ) Did that coincide with World War I? 266 Jonah Goldberg's NRO G-file this week makes the case for using quotes when referring to "president" Obama. It also includes the best take on Obamacare in light of how it's been endlessly tweaked and defended:

"For some reason, it all reminds me of that scene from Gladiator:

COMMODUS: My fatherÂ’s war against the barbarians, he said himself it achieved nothing. But people still loved him.

LUCILLA: People always love victories.

COMMODUS: But why? They donÂ’t see the battles. What do they care about Germania?

LUCILLA: They care about the greatness of Rome.

COMMODUS: Greatness of Rome? But what is that?

LUCILLA: It̢۪s an idea, greatness. Greatness is a vision.

COMMODUS: Exactly. A vision. I will give the people a vision and they will love me for it. They will soon forget the tedious sermonizing of a few dry old men. I will give them the greatest vision of their lives.

Obamacare has ceased being a thing for its defenders and has instead become an idea, a vision. To question the greatness of Obamacare is to miss the point of the greatness of Obamacare."

Posted by: Peaches --------------------------- I've looked at ballistics videos and while the 9mm is a heavier projectile, it also creates more recoil making it harder to fire follow up shots. I think an LC9 is a fine choice, but Glock's latest offering in a pocket pistol is .380, not 9mm. I carry the .380 and so does a large LEO friend of mine. Great pocket pistol. I think the .380 would be suited wonderfully for a woman as well. Easier to rack the slide, and easier to hit your target due to lower recoil on that second and third shoot.

291 I think the possibility that the pilot is a political extremist may be a positive turn of events. If it were an Islamic thing I'd have no hope for the hostages, but a guy who's protesting a political imprisonment? I think they have a chance. Unless of course he flew the plane into the ocean.

293 One other thing regarding the LC9 (or 380). It is a double action only (DAO) trigger. It is a long heavy pull. Makes it safe for pocket, or purse carry (in a holster) but NOT a target pistol, or even one I would keep in the house for defense. It is designed for carry. For the house, I would keep what you have Peaches, and consider some other options as well.

I am totes keeping what I have, TR.  Also a double-action.  But some kind of little automatic would be nice -- I shot a couple at the range last time and plinked the crap out of those metals.  Could not do that with fluffy . . . much like her mom, despite her dainty appearance, she's a fuckin' beast.

I've got an LC9 with the integrated LaserMax as my conceal carry piece and I rather like it. I also bought a couple of extended 9 round mags for it as they were made available within the past few months or so. I consider it too large to be a "pocket gun", though I do have a holster for carrying it inside of a cargo shorts pocket. Great for summertime.

Cool, thanks for the tip, TR.  A Glock.  Hmmmmm . . .  I will look into that.  They seem reasonably priced, too.  Part of what I love about the Rugers is that they are made in America.  Beautifully made, actually.  I do like that it's not a snub-nose, I don't really trust those, I want a little barrel to help with the aim.

Posted by: Peaches at March 15, 2014 04:05 PM (8lmkt)

320 That's exactly what it's like, HRadish. The horse knows what he's doing, and when he's in a hurry he doesn't care if stuff/people get knocked over. Just huge house pets with their own house.

Posted by: Tobacco Road at March 15, 2014 08:00 PM (4Mv1T) fnord (4Mv1T) I really like the Glock 19 (or G23 or G30 in less-free states) because it's just a little bit bigger than a truly compact pistol, but carries a pretty full load, and the recoil is pretty muted on a Glock (or most polymer-framed pistols). Oddly, I don't have any of those. Go figure.

331 My guess is this same group is against hunting (which would have the same affect on deer).........because I suppose some apex predators are better than others.

333 I believe that the wolves ravaging the deer and elk herds saves the vegetation that allows smaller game to thrive. It also ravages the coyotes, existing wolves, bear cubs....

336 I live just outside YNP and work in YNP so I speak with some authority (not much, Im just a lowly private sector employee who works for the parks concessionaire). Much if not most of what this video says is actually true. It only stretches to ridiculous levels when it says they "changed the rivers". Wolves have been absolutely a good thing for Yellowstone and absolutely a horrible thing for ranchers and hunters outside of YNP. My solution is to release as many wolves as the NPS wants and let us kill them all. WIN WIN.

337 So Trophic cascade =  Reaganomics?

An apex predator, top of the pyramid, changes the behavior of all the bottom feeders who are consuming so much more than they produce, that they are inhibiting growth?
