31 The picture reminds me of a story that a coworker told me about his Army days. He had a TDY in Japan, and there was a pro-communist rally (read: riot) in Tokyo. He was in an office building, and watching the ruckus, since it would have been a bad idea for a gai-jin to go out in that mob. The city riot squad arrived: no shields, no guns, just shinai (bamboo training swords), and one guy in back with a caddy of extra swords. They lined up across the road and advanced on the protesters. Once they got within arms length of the crowd, they started swinging, and people started dropping. Every time a shinai broke, the caddy supplied another. They swept the street, walking over those who got knocked out. The police ambulances came in behind them to clean up.

Given the post-war social turmoil in Japan, I'm inclined to believe his story. Probably couldn't work here, though...

Despite having attended universities, I have no sense of allegiance to said universities or their sports teams. ive been spoiled since i was a kid about big wins and championships from the home-team as im from metro-pittsburgh, i thought WE used to go nuts.
