This Dog Is Large-ish
— Ace

gargantudog.jpg

I think the photography there's a little trick-ish but the dog is genuinely huge. "Almost" four feet tall at the shoulder, and weighing 232 pounds.

232?!

He was just certified by Guinness as the World's Biggest Dog. More pictures at the Daily Mail.

George just penned an article for them, Don't Hate Me Because My Dogbutt Smells So Fragrant.

I have a casual friend who lives in Texas and she has a hard time keeping her dogs' coats (and especially skin) ok with the humidity. My girl, Bailey (Bailey's Scottish Dream), is also a tri: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43934755@N06/5277313503/ Does yours like to hang out with her front half resting on something (usually in my house it's an ottoman) and the back half "standing" up? It's the oddest thing. Bailey has been doing that since she was little. (She's three now.) I remember going to shows and seeing that a lot of the collies liked to stand up in their pens, but this other thing is weird.

We just found out last week that one of our office Schnauzers has a really aggressive cancer in the lymph nodes. Sam's 12 yrs old, hard of hearing and doesn't see too well, but he's still spry. The collie like to lie like a frog, with both rear legs sticking out in different directions.  When she runs, she is amazingly beautiful with her fur flowing in the wind.

Her favorite thing is to sit in inside the front door, watching everything going by on the street.  We call it "watching her TV".

The morning they woke me up barking at  the neighbors cat they had cornered in the neighbors garage at 3 am (I had to get up and go to work that  day)  was the last straw.   They went to a friend's farm the next day.

My folks had a Harlequin Great Dane when I was in my teens into college.

Thing was a clumsy, drooler that had a bark that would rattle the windows.

Yet he was the most well behaved, gentle dog I've ever lived with.

The neighborhood kids used to beg my parents to let him out to play.(Back in the day when dogs freely roamed the neighborhood)

And he sat on the sofa just like in the photo.

Since my parents never had him fixed, we had the extra fun of the huge ballsack hanging over the sofa.

Was always a hit when relatives came over for Holidays.

Dog made it almost 9 years til hip displacure did him in.

Currently have a 3 year old Yellow lab/WTFK designer dog.

Oh, they have a sense of smell alright.  The thing is they will take off on a run and not find their way home because they are Teh Dum.

Really.

There's a reason their heads are so narrow.  No brains in them.  Also the dumb ones persevere in the breed while the smart ones don't.  Dumb dogs are good racers and smart ones aren't.  The smart ones will figure out the shortest distance between them and the "rabbit" is to cross the field instead of running around it.  The dumb ones just keep going round and round, never catching the damn thing.  So the dumb ones win races and the smart ones are eliminated.  Hence, the dumb ones get bred (winners) and the smart ones don't (losers).

Both of our Goldens, who are/were the sweetest boys on earth, HATE water. Our dog, may he RIP, was from a show-dog family. Hated to get his paws wet. Gorgeous dog, sweetest on earth. Angel dog, never did anything normal puppies do (chewing) and lived to be almost 13. Would not retrieve anything, as what was the point? Lived for food and petting. I grieved for this dog as he stole a part of my heart. I know that dogs are in heaven.

His nephew, who is my son's dog, HATES water but retrieves. Also gorgeous and stops traffic with his mane. Smart as well as sweet. Appreciates art and seasonal changes of house decor and notices this type of thing. Watches TV. Does algebra. Eats things he shouldn't. Now neutered and well-behaved. Would make a very fine therapy dog if he was not already part of our family and spoiled completely. Dogs are wonderful.

186 Is this a general dog thread or does it have to be on-topic about large Danes? Our dogs found us (as have nearly all our dogs and cats). They were both probably dumped on the country road, and both were nice as could be, but awfully hard to train (which may be consequent upon or causal to their being dumped!). Never raised one "of our own," from a pup; these are like abused adopted children, needing constant reassurance. So, as the storms rolled in night before last, I think it's Large Cat trying to climb on the bed as usual, but when I reach down to throw him off, I feel two big dog paws. I managed to push the big galoot off the bed, got him to come around to my side where he could lay next to the (low) bed and I could reach out and pet him when it thundered. He had two paws up on the bed, and I let him stay there. He's a real rascal, don't want to let his nose get in the tent as the saying goes, but it was a loud storm. Easy to imagine the poor guy had been shot at before he came to us. Weekends when the gunfire's going on all 'round us, he's miserable. He's not as big as the Dane. But he certainly seemed large when he was trying to scramble onto the bed!

199 I dislike anyone who tries to top another poster but I have five dogs. I'm 60+ and have always had three dogs but I volunteered to transport seven dogs from Georgia to NJ three years ago. Nobody showed up for three of the pit bulls I transported. The three Pits are the best dogs I have ever owned, they have no equal. After two years I don't know how I could live without them. They are the most affectionate and loving dogs on the planet and when friends arrive they are the best greeters in the world. I told this constantly. They do have some issues with odd strangers, but don't we all?

I've seen pointers point.

I've seen setters set.

I've never, though, seen a shnauzer shnauz.
