— Russ from Winterset Hey, just got back from helping out at one of the 4 caucus locations here in Madison County, Iowa. We had the South Half of Winterset and the fairly rural SW quarter of the County caucusing at the Middle School here in Winterset. The North 1/2 of town & the NE quarter of the County were about 2 blocks away at the Jr. High School, and the NW and SE quarters of the County were in Earlham and Truro, respectively.
The raw numbers from my home County? Here you go:
Santorum.......223
Paul...............221
Romney.........170
Perry.............154
Gingrich.........144
Bachmann........54
Huntsman..........5
Cain..................1
Roemer.............1
"No Preference"..1
"Other"..............1
Here's the numbers from the DSM Register as of 9:20 CST (49.5% reporting):
Santorum 24.3%
Romney 23.6%
RuPaul 21.8%
Gingrich 13.3%
Perry 10.1%
Bachmann 5.6%
Huntsman 0.6%
"Other" 0.4% (229 votes)
Cain 0.0% (23 votes)
Roemer 0.0% ( 9 votes)
What does it all mean? Beats the hell out of me. Santorum seems to be the current recipient of all the Evangelical "Not Romney" votes, with Paul getting enough votes to grab the "coveted" 3rd place slot in Iowa (which, IIRC, Pat Robertson used to coast to victory in the General Election in 1988. Or not.). Gingrich & Perry probably also survive to fight another day, but I'm thinking that Drew's idea of the lesser of the two being used as an electoral "organ donor" to keep the other one going is on the right track.
The big news of the night? Michelle "I was born in Iowa" Bachmann is done. Stick a fork in her....or if you're our bald-headed prick of a state senator Kent Sorenson, you can stick a knife in her back instead (again). A 6th place finish wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that she WON the freaking Iowa Straw Poll back in August.
The rest? Huntsman has declared that "Iowa picks corn, New Hampshire picks Presidents". That's a neat soundbite. Maybe he should call Rudy Giuliani to see if it gets a chuckle out of him? He's an electoral dead man walkin', he just doesn't know it yet.
Cain? Well, if he had any illusions about restarting his campaign due to a groundswell of support from the Iowa grassroots, they were pretty much shitcanned by the fact that he just got beat by "Other". By an approximately 10:1 ratio.
Roemer? Shit, he's still in the race? Apparently not if he only got 9 votes so far.
All I know for sure now is that January 4th is a New State Holiday here in Iowa: If they can declare a holiday for St. Patrick driving all the snakes out of Ireland, we can sure as hell declare a holiday to commemorate the day that all the candidates & operatives packed up & headed for New Hampshire.
At least our phone won't be ringing every 5 minutes the rest of the week. So I've got that to look forward to.

Let me guess: California?

Kinda depressed about Perry. He had some campaign flubs, certainly. So did every candidate, but because everyone knew that Perry was the only one who could rival Romney for resources, his gaffes were jumped on by everyone. Oh well. Our options are now a nobody an insane nobody, and two guys who think AGW and individual mandates are just swell, and the "conservative" one serially cheated on two wives who were terminally ill.
Yeah. Good times.

but here is what I really do not get....why did the cain, no preference and other voters even show up...were they looking to pick up chicks?

The remaining counties flipped off Mitt's private jet as it flew overhead....

I hate to say this, because people are proud of their state, but Iowa and New Hampshire should not have this kind of power. Iowa's a small state, moderate to liberal, and addicted to politicians subsidizing ethanol and agriculture. New Hampshire's a tiny, liberal state. By letting them go first, you get moderate squishy Republican candidates. And in the general, when independents get to choose between a squish and a commie like Obama who at least believes what he's saying, they're gonna go with the person with the stronger belief system.
Why can't there be two primaries? All the states vote on the same day in January; a month later they vote again among the three top vote-getters. I'm sure there are problems with that, but there has to be a more relevant way than letting Iowa and New Hampshire decide the future of the country because that's how it's always been done.

This is a continental sized republic. How are the candidates supposed to campaign? Its a long process because we test the endurance and steadiness of candidates and we give them the opportunity to actually meet and persuade voters by limiting the battlefield. If you nationalize the primaries by turning the us into 2 giant districts, that vote 4 weeks apart, nobody will ever again meet a contender personally. The long locally limited process is necessary, but its true Iowa and New Hampshire play too big a role and something should be done about that.

If you think New Hampshire is a liberal state then you don't know it very well. New Hampshire is like Utah compared to the rest of New England, very economically conservative.

Iowa state GOP official Doug Heye said Tuesday there will be no recount, even if Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are exceptionally close when the vote count is finished.
Heye said votes were counted under the supervision of campaign representatives, who certified the totals. He said the numbers were double-checked when they were reported to state officials, and there is no reason to check them again.
Gosh, I wonder if Mitt will somehow manage to juuuuust edge in front at the tape....

The RNC needs to stomp out this "Iowa first" bullshit once and for all. Toss all their delagates if they hold a straw poll or caucus before Super Tuesday. Or, preferably, July.
Finally, something we can all agree on. Iowa goes last now.

Alright. That's just too damn much. Rubio seems ok. Alright. Potential, maybe.
A bunch of people have globbed onto this guy, and you've got one admitting it right there so it's not some projection, they support this guy because he's fucking hispanic.
These hispandering fantasies of winning over minority demographics with blatant identity-based racial pandering, it will not die. They're trying to build political coalitions out of ethnic groups. It's kind of sick.
And it's been like this ever since anyone heard of him, just because he's hispanic. That was basically Mel Martinez's qualification too. More Bush type bullshit.
I don't blaim Rubio, he's got nothing to do with it. He seems alright.

They have to be not-SCOAMF and able-to-beat-SCOAMF.

87- Perry doesn't really have a path to the nomination anymore. He'd be a non-factor in NH, and is unlikely to win SC or FL after that.
Dude, fuck that, Santorum hasn't even been vetted.
No one payed attention to him until yesterday. The fucking dicks ramrodded the primary season before anyone was paying attention and people are dropping out before most voters have fucking decided.
God knows what the fuck Santorum actually thinks about anything. Nobody fucking knows! Except fucking IOWA! In January.
Santorum has a 85% likelyhood of imploding sometime between New Hampshire and South Carolina, the week before the latter being also when Bachmann drops out for him.

From the CNN PoliticalTicker blog:
"I mean the idea that one or two states is going to decide who the next nominee for the Republican Party is, is just, you know, that's not reality. This is a 50 state campaign and it's about the future of America," Perry said.
Perry may indeed be returning to Texas to reassess things, but this quote suggests that he's not yet ready to drop out. No one else is dropping out, not een those behing Perry.
Perry doen't strike me as someone who gives up quite so easily ... Iowa is only 6EVs, and whatever the caucus may predict, predictions aren't the same as results.

Then he opened his mouth to speak and disaster ensued.
He's polling nationally in the mid single digits, and has no conceivable path to wins in NH, SC, or FL despite his TX campaign sugar daddies.
You can blame Iowa bibles or ethanol if you want (interesting that Santorum is publicly opposed to ethanol subsidies and has repeatedly voted against them but still won) but Perry is a bad candidate and that's why he lost badly. His personal narrative might be a good one but he can't seal the deal.
Time to swallow my pride and see if Santorum has the moxie to make the case for conservatism.
