Maybe but you have to understand that for 90% of America, Romney is a name and that guy who ran Bain that fired everyone. They know nothing about the guy or what he's done, who he is or what he's like. This is is chance to open up his heart and show them the gooey bits inside. So yeah its probably a bit much and likely a bit staged and dramatic, but effective to do the job.
Like I said a month ago or so, stage one is getting people to admit that Obama maybe isn't such a nice guy after all and make it okay to criticize him.
Stage two is getting people to know who Romney is and learn he's someone you can like and trust. Its not enough to make people not want Obama in office, they have to want the next guy in his place.
This campaign chills me with how carefully crafted it is, down to almost supernatural precision, like grinding a lens for an observatory. Tolerances within a millionth of an inch. Its so clinically exact, it almost feels like a machine than a human effort.
That's fine when it works for your side but I fear for the future of politics.

I also had a '67 Impala, it was an SS, 327 with a Quadra-Jet and a single exhaust. Liked it a lot. Long and with enough room in the trunk for three bodies.

The thing here is that they mock and mock with smug self righteousness. Hayes thought it ludicrous that people applauded the line about the seas receding, because people are doing studies about mass transit if such a doomsday scenario comes to pass, completely oblivious to the fact there is a more urgent doomsday scenario staring us right in the face.
These are the guys wearing their high school letter jacket at their alma mater's game, but they're now in their 20's, and people are surprised they would still waste their time with this. It's just about over, but they don't know it, and it's pathetic.
