Tim Tebow Will Be Broncos Starter For Next Year
— Ace

At least he will enter training camp in that position.

Some of his throws look pro-level. Some of his throws look amateurish.

I think some sportswriter had it right when he said Tebow doesn't yet have the ability to anticipate where the receiver is going to make his break, and where he'll be when he does; instead, he waits to actually see this happen, then throws. Pro quarterbacks don't have the time to wait to see an open receiver, most of the time.

That's something that may come with experience. But I think most quarterbacks who fail don't wind up failing on athleticism or arm-strength, but on processor speed, the ability to see the field fast enough to make quick and mostly accurate projections a second ahead into the future.

Man alive, did the Patriots demolish them. On both sides of the ball. The weak New England defense completely stymied the Broncos.

Speaking of demolishing -- I'm not rubbing this in to Wisconites' faces, just stating a fact: The Giants completely dominated Green Bay in a way I would have never have guessed, and certainly not bet. Two bad calls (and all three bad calls in the game were in favor of Green Bay) led to two Green Bay touchdowns, and one of them might have also subtracted a Giants score.

It was frustrating to watch Aaron Rodgers keep scrambling for 8-12 yards whenever he ran for the first. But of course Aaron Rodgers doesn't beat people that way. He beats people by throwing the ball to receivers down the field. As frustrating it was for me, as a Giants fan, to keep watching him pick up first downs, I did keep it in mind: I guess no one's open downfield, huh?

The Giants secondary had been weak just a year ago and in fact most of this year, right? And yet somehow -- we can't see how because they don't show us the receivers in many shots -- they were apparently covering Green Bay's fearsome receivers on most damn plays.

Two great games next Sunday. I'm surprised Vegas has New England out 8 points in front of Baltimore. I figured it would be four. They have the Niners as three point favorites, which sounds right. Wait a Minute: I misread. The "Vegas sharps" line has the Niners as 11.5 point favorites. That seems way too high to me. Did they not just see the Giants shut down the NFL's best offense?

Meanwhile, in terms of winning the Super Bowl, Vegas now has New England as a clear favorite, at 6:5. New York and the Niners are both 3 to 1 against, and the Ravens are 6 to 1 against.

Vegas really doubts the Ravens, huh?

>>> That's something that may come with experience.

Also, it will come with actually being able to go through a summer training camp in the starting position.

When a QB trains for a whole year with his receivers, he develops a rhythm with them.  He starts to understand when they will make the turns in their routes, and how high to throw, etc.

Tebow never had this as he came in part of the way through the year.

Not really.  Their QB is a total rookie and even still they would have won had it not been for that moronic fumble by the punt returner that cost them 7 (plus?) points.

I'd have been willing to bet on the Giants having a chance.  Considering that Green Bay had the worst pass defense in the league.  Along with the Giants really getting into a groove at the end of the season combined with the Packers sitting so many of their starters at the end of the season.  That has just screamed bad idea to me whenever I see it.  You've already got a playoff bye use that to rest and recuperate, you can't sit them longer when they are going to be playing a team that is coming off at least one win and is looking to build.

The Colts have been notorious at doing the "sitting starters at the end of the season" and they have been one and done in the playoffs so often, especially with bye weeks.  The year they won the Super Bowl?  They did not have a playoff bye.

14 Speaking of great athletes who never develop the intuition or headgame needed to be a star player see McNabb, Donovan.

Donovan was a great guy, great athlete.  The team loved him, he was a great community role model, and no one doubted his arm, but he just never got his head around the game.

I watched that guy for years in Philly and winced as he choked game after game.  No better arm, but he just never had that sense of the field or the ability to process in a crunch.

Can Tebow get it?  I have no idea.

19 Green Bay played as if they had dipped their hands in lard before the game started. Eight dropped passes and four fumbles lost (three of which were called). The Giants played a good game but the Packers also did a great job of self-destructing.

Keep in mind that the line is what gets even action, not what will really happen. The Patriots' fan base is more enthusiastic than the Ravens', and this is just a move to dampen Patriots action and tease out Ravens'.

The Packers and the Cowboys get this treatment more.

But TJ Yates, a Matt Schaub he ain't.

Matt Leinart probably could've won that game.

Posted by: Ace at 05:47 PM Not to take anything away from the performance of the Giants D, the Packers did not help themselves by (1) Aaron Rodgers missing WIDE OPEN WRs and (2) open WRs dropping 8 passes. In the first half, Rodgers missed a wide open Greg Jennings inside the 10 yard line. In the 2nd half, Rodgers missed a wide open Jermichael Finley across the middle inside the 20. Credit the Giants pass rush for preventing a possible TD in the 2nd half when Jennings beat the DB big time on a double move, but right as Rodgers was about to throw it, Umenyiora stripped the ball and Giants recovered. Giants D played great, but it was helped along by rock hands of the GB WRs and rust by Rodgers.

See the Patriots.  They don't sit their starters much at the end of the season.  Yeah you have that injury risk but you've got that every game, and even every practice.  And yeah a half would be better than what many do in those situations which is not at all.  Aaron Rodgers hadn't played since Christmas Day.  Think about that.

Can Tebow get it? I have no idea.

I have every confidence he will. Elway will make sure of it, so will John Fox. In fact, it's in the team's bestest interests that they all help him get it. His throwing mechanics have already improved, and that OT throw last week was maybe a bit high, but he still hit Thomas in full stride. The boy's got potential, AWUTSBHIA (As We Used To Say Back Home In Alabama).

And GB just couldn't hang on to the ball, TO's killed them. When you've got a guy that had gone some five years or so without coughing up the ball and he drops one, you know it's gonna be a long day.

28 I'll take everyone's word for it that he is no great quarterback, but he sure as hell is a great Leader.

I argue that the are about four tiers of starting quarterback:

The first tier -- guys like Rodgers, Brady, and Brees, who are no-question "elite" quarterbacks.

The second tier -- guys like Rothlesberger and Schaub, who are good enough to get you to the playoffs every year, and who you're perfectly fine with.

The third tier -- the journeymen who are better than a schlub off the street. Guys like Orton and Grossman.

The fourth tier -- the guys who only have a job by accident.

Tebow has proven himself at least a third tier quarterback, and the Broncos can afford to take the offseason to build him up to the second tier. I don't think he'll ever be first tier, but give him a decent receiver (or a monster like Johnson in Houston) and Denver's offense is set.

29 Hard to believe 9/26 is gonna earn Tim a starting QB job in the NFL Posted by: soothie at January 16, 2012 05:55 PM Well, not necessarily. I watched the press conference live in NFL Network and Elway was very careful of the wording of his answers. He stated that Tebow had earned the right to be the starter going into training camp. He also said that they had 2 QBs under contract, but would look to add another either in Free Agency or the Draft in the offseason. So all Tebow has earned is the assumption that he is the starter heading to training camp. I'm sure that means that there will be a competition in training camp for the position, but it will be Tebow's position to lose. He simply goes into training camp as the #1 QB on the depth chart. Smart way of going about it by Elway, really. Doesn't piss off his fan base, but leaves himself some leeway to bring in another QB who will compete with Tebow in training camp.

If its something that can be learned then I think he'll definitely pick it up.  Here's an article from last month that talks about his studying of the teams that were most likely to draft him, his work ethic in practice, and even at all hours of night.

It also contains his admission of breaking one of the 10 Commandments.

Like his commercial stated: "they" did not think he'd go to a big university football team as QB; "they" did not think he'd win the Heinsman Trophy; "they" did not think he'd get a national championship (twice), and "they" did not think he would be a draft pick or be "good" enough to play the NFL. Posted by: BackwardsBoy, CEO Curmudgeons INC. at January 16, 2012 06:03 PM Yeah, I think I read that Kuhn had not fumbled in his entire career, Rodgers had not lost a fumble all season and Grant had lost only one fumble all season. Combine that with 8 dropped passes by I think 8 different WRs, Rodgers missing on 2 passes to wide open WRs and the Giants hitting on a hail mary and it was just the perfect storm for a Packers loss. As a Bears fan, I relished that entire game. Ironically enough, this was the Packers team of last season. They had big problems with drops last year by their WRs, but then had that fixed by the end of the year and postseason. This year, other than the Chiefs game, they didn't have any drops problem. But then, sure enough, it resurfaces as a problem in the Divisional Playoff game.

Did they not just see the Giants shut down the NFL's best offense?

No, they did not.  They saw the Packers' receivers drop about 10 balls they usually catch, and Aaron Rodgers miss about 4 wide-open guys he almost always hits.  There are games where the defenders' play shuts down the offense.  This was not one of those games.

They saw the Giants get a very bad performance from Green Bay and the spread reflects that.

Best of luck to Tebow, he has some things to work on but its doable.

I should probably admit that I'm not a Brady fan. Still, isn't that rationale the reason the Cowboys have (had?) Tony Romo holding on field goals?

Posted by: Methos at January 16, 2012 06:20 PM (sOXQX)

Romo was the holder because he started the season as the back-up QB, and when he became the starter they never had someone else take over the holder job.  And then he flubs the snap in the playoff.

He is not the holder anymore

87 The NYT did a pretty condescending article about Tebow. Just a bunch of leftard antiChristian bullshit. Posted by: mike at January 16, 2012 06:19 PM Yeah, I saw that article linked on one of the Bigs sites. The author basically was whining, because Tebow mentions God more than the author likes and said that Tebow needs to grow and mature and understand that he needs to stop mentioning his faith, so that people like the author can feel better. That's a bit backwards. Tebow is fine. What needs to happen is that anyone who has problems with Tebow expressing his faith during interviews can simply change the channel or press mute. Very simple.

I'm not a non-religious guy, but I think that while Tebow is sincere in his beliefs, he'd be better served by toning it down a bit.

There comes a point where I just want it to be about the game, and not about being a freaking martyr.  I'd really rather see him take on Kurt Warner and Aaron Rogers' approach, and let his actions do the talking.

91 Tebow will at least be a competent NFL quarterback, if for no other reason than he's willing to work harder than anyone else. It's going to take a long time for him to unlearn years of poor mechanics, but it can be done - Alex Smith came out of the Urban Meyer system, as well, and it took until this season for him to really put it together.

But yeah, I'm loving the playoffs so far. Three of the four remaining teams like to run the ball and play defense. It's like people have forgotten that stopping the other team from scoring points is more valuable than your own ability to put points on the board.

Of the hundreds of athletes in the NFL, one, makes an overt religious gesture, and now we are into "keep that religion from mine eyes, it has no place in public and I want to be free of the oppression of being forced to look at it for 2 seconds before watching a sporting match" sort of militant anti faith fervor.

Methos, I am deeply, deeply concerned as well.  I believe I need to go Tebowing for a few hours to deal with my concern.

Here, let me try to yank this thread back to the direction it belongs, hating on the Patriots.  If I can't have Belichick getting hit in the crotch, can I at least have someone sack Brady so hard he cries on the field?

Look, I like locker room showers to be free of pederasts, governments to be free of progressives, and football fields to be free of kneeling quarterbacks.  So sue me.

Take this to its logical conclusion:  you have players kneeling after sacking a quarterback, fullbacks bowing over a first down, and receivers saying hosannas over touchdowns.

What then?  Do the muslims kneel on little rugs on the sidelines?

I like football, and I'd just as soon have my games not be pitched as the forces of light vs. the armies of darkness.  If it wanted that I'd tune in to the inter-Madrassa league.

He just deflects any personal glory to God. I'm not real religious and I'm not having a problem with that.

Me neither, and it certainly doesn't appear as if the rest of the country has a problem with it, judging from ESPN's poll showing Tebow as the most popular athlete the other day. There's also another poll showing Americans believe in a Higher Power, over 90% consistently, and I don't think it's Cthulu.

We are still a Christian nation, and I still can't find anything wrong with that, anymore than I can find anything wrong with Tebow.

But Tebow forces Wodeshed to view his prayers and psychologically rapes him with his religiousness.  Its pretty obvious that the extent of what the dumbass knows about what Tebow has said comes from sportwriters who think inserting religious imagery in their writing about him is clever and that stupid SNL skit.

184 I guess I'm going to call it an evening (commenting-wise), but it's funny to be on this side of an Ace argument. Namely, to be on the side where I saw what I saw, and it doesn't at all resemble the thing Ace is describing. Giants defenders? Yeah, I guess they were ok, except the biggest problem for the Packers were receivers having balls clank off their hands and chests like they were... [insert some disgusting Barney Frank and/or Andi Sullivan joke here]. One team looked rusty, the other didn't. Simple as that. It happens sometimes, and it might be the intangible factor of one team being hungrier than the other. There are reasons beyond talent as to why teams rarely win back to back championships.

204 The actual point spread on the Giants is 3 or 3 1/2, with the 49ers favored. If you go "by the book" (Giants point scored for the season + 49ers points allowed, vs 49ers points scored vs. Giants points allowed, then add 3.5 for home field), the 49ers "should be" favored by 9. That's what Vegas Sharps is looking at, I'd guess. 49ers have no obvious weaknesses to exploit, whereas the Giants took advantage of two teams with weak offenses (Jets and Falcons) and two teams with weak defenses (Cowboys and Packers). Giants face a very difficult game in San Francisco. But they've already won one in Green Bay, so who knows?

215 The Vegas spreads have nothing whatsoever to do with who they think will win the games. The oddsmakers never even give that a thought. The spreads are money hedges based on how much money is coming in backing each team, making sure they'll have enough dough to cover the bets and extract a healthy profit at the same time.

Wow, some serious Tebow hate here. If you don't like the guy, then watch an Eagles game, with a quarterback who tortured dogs. Or a Patriots game, with a quarterback who dumped his baby son's mother for a hot supermodel. Or a Steelers game, with a quarterback who... etc etc etc.

I have fun with the Tebow haters at work. I tell them 'if you don't like Tebow the you PROBABLY HATE AMERICA!'

What people really don't like about Tebow is that he 'dares' to mention Jesus Christ by name on live television. There are elements in this country that have made it their mission in life to drive religion in to the background, and then along comes Tim Tebow and BOOM- Jesus Christ is back on TV. He can't be stopped. I'm sure you've all heard of the 1st Amendment and the Free Exercise clause.

So Sir John Elway has announced that next season, Tebow starts off as the presumptive starter. He'll get full benefit of the OTAs and minicamps and a full offseason of work to prepare. It's all on Tim whether he succeeds or not. He is going to get a legitimate shot.

In closing, 'if you don't like Tebow the you PROBABLY HATE AMERICA!'

The network wants Tebow to sit in as a guest analyst in its NFL studio Sunday. "We've had conversations with his people," CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said Sunday. "We have a request in. We haven't heard back."

CBS expects an answer by midweek. And Tebow's people might want to consider how such a cameo in CBS' studio can let a player send a message. Just replay a tape of the resolutely penitent Detroit Lion Ndamukong Suh on Sunday.

I said nothing about prayers on the sidelines.  I said nothing about comments in interviews.  I said nothing about his beliefs.

What I DID say is that I would prefer to keep religion out of football, unless it's a matter of prayers to keep players healthy, etc.

I really don't think this is an especially controversial position, frankly.

226 It's my opinion that the "Tebowing" thing is overdoing it. It's a lot better than Randy Moss and the goalpost, but it still strikes me as showboating, of a fashion. Posted by: Wodeshed at January 16, 2012 06:36 PM Players have been "Tebowing" in the NFL and college football for years, probably decades. Tebow did not invent going down to one knee in the endzone, bowing one's head and praying to God for 5-10 seconds after scoring a TD. But, for some reason, Tebow is the only one to takes shit for doing it. Funny that.

Speaking of Ray Lewis, hey, Wodeshed, you know what I'd love?  Not to have to have the NFL, ESPN, etc. etc. acting like Ray Lewis is some kind of fantastic person and great ambassador of the league.  That is far, far, far more offensive than anything that Tebow has done.

THANK you.

233 What I DID say is that I would prefer to keep religion out of football, unless it's a matter of prayers to keep players healthy, etc.

I really don't think this is an especially controversial position, frankly.

First off, do you know what the content of his conversations with God are?

Two; Anytime you INSIST that someone NOT be allowed to pray, you should expect that to be controversial. Some of us think it's a right and stuff.

Third I'll give you another hint. The INSTANT he had detractors like yourself pressuring him to quit doing this, his faith demands that he continue. By complaining and saying he should stop you take his option to stop away. It's called a contradiction in faith.

236 There comes a point where I just want it to be about the game, and not about being a freaking martyr.

I think it's appropriate for an athlete to ask for strength, for health, etc.   What I don't think is appropriate is for an athlete to fire up a pass with God guiding it into a receiver's hands.  That's what I take exception to.

All the more reason to separate church and sports.

What I AM saying is that I'd like to watch a football game that is free of a religious overtone.

Yeah.  You said nothing else at all about anything other than you think that Tebowing is showboating.  That's all you said.

238 Late to the thread, pulling a Bizarro Breitbart.

Ravens are getting disrespect from the Vegas sharps because New England is gonna destroy them this Sunday. The playoff game in '09 had no Welker (injured), no Hernandez or Gronkowski (college), and a defense that couldn't stop Ray Rice. Flacco threw for 40 yards in that game.

Giants/49ers is gonna be the NFL game of the year. Tremendous matchup, but I do doubt Alex Smith recaptures the magic from this week. But that D is for real.

That's all from the Tebow-haters and the atheists who just don't understand why people pray. People pray for strength, for courage, for inspiration, for clarity, for calmness, etc. I pray sometimes when I'm going in to give an important presentation in front of upper management. I don't pray that God will intervene and make the managers agree to my presentation, but I do pray that he will help calm me and give me strenth and composure when presenting. It's the same with Tebow. Only his detractors and haters have accused him of praying to God for ridiculous things like intervening in a football game. And that goes to non-believers misunderstanding of why people pray.

I loathe the Ravens with an utter passion but I anticipate that the Ravens D is going to have sex done to them by the refs.  That's not because I think that the refs/league are in the tank for the Patriots but because it most certainly seems that breathing hard in the vicinity of a QB or receiver is now verbotten in the NFL.

A retread running back that would never have run for as many yards without defenses keying on Tebow as a decoy. No tight end. Young, unproven wide receivers. A new coaching staff. No off season or training camp. Then being thrown into the fire five games into the season. Not to mention unfair, unrelenting scrutiny that was never equally applied to Gabbert or Ponder or any other player, period. Give the guy a fighting chance."

I live in Denver Metro so I am exposed to more Tebow coverage than most of you. Tebow has made it clear that God does not care about the outcome of a football game, and that he (Tebow) does not pray for victory. Tebow is not trying to convert his teammates. They all know who he is and what he's about, and they respect him for it.

Tebow is what he is. There he stands; he can do no other.

260 An abortion doctor has detailed his past romantic relationship with a 20-something nurse who went on to become the wife of pro-life GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum. Karen Santorum, 51, was years away from meeting her politician hubby, Rick Santorum, when she struck up a six-year love affair with “dashing” Pittsburgh abortion doc Tom Allen, who opened up to The Daily Beast about their time living together. While the relationship has been reported before, the in-depth look at Karen Santorum’s time dating the obstetrician — who was 40 years her senior — comes as conservative and evangelical leaders have rallied around the former Pennsylvania senator ahead of Saturday’s South Carolina primary. Allen, who co-founded Pittsburgh’s first abortion clinic in the 1970s, actually delivered Karen Santorum as a baby in 1960. She was then known as Karen Garver. Her parents remained friendly with Allen, and the two hooked up 22 years later when she was a nursing student at Duquesne University and was looking for an apartment to rent Sleeping with the Doc who delivered you? 278 Smirk now, but you all know you'd better get used to bowing before the might of the Texans. They're only getting better over the next few years, adding a 1st round receiver to start opposite 80, adding another cover corner, adding Mario Williams back to the defense, starting a real starting QB, adding JJ Watt and Brooks Reed's (5 sacks between them Sunday) first real training camp, adding a real 3-4 nose tackle (we didn't have one all season!)... It was a good year, and the next few should be great ones. Posted by: Sterling Archer at January 16, 2012 06:46 PM I was rooting for the Texans this season, as I'm a big fan of teams who play great D. (I'll be rooting for a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl). Yeah it was last season.  Actually its probably been more of a cumulative effect.  Last I heard it sounded like his back and neck were fine and now the concern might be a nerve/muscle in his throwing arm.  I think Indy is in a tough situation with him.  If he's still as good as he was last year then he is worth every penny of his contract to your team and you'd be stupid to trade him away.  And if he's damaged good and will never be at the level again then you probably won't find anyone willing to take him with the contract that he has.

He's might be gay (not scanning society trashblogs to find evidence one way or the other), but he's definitely a leftie.  They're both choices, but at least the prior is based in a reality that currently exists, e.g. if you like guys, you like guys.  Leftism is choosing to believe that the world works in ways that reality and history have proven it does not, and will not going forward.

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at January 16, 2012 03:47 PM (lJJMb)

303 I think Indy is in a tough situation with him.  If he's still as good as he was last year then he is worth every penny of his contract to your team and you'd be stupid to trade him away.  And if he's damaged good and will never be at the level again then you probably won't find anyone willing to take him with the contract that he has.

I fully expect that the Colts will work out a deal with Peyton in which he ends up on the coaching staff or in management with the contract bought out for a stake in the team.

317 I think the Tebow thing fired up Brady to the point where he's going to go on a touchdown scoring jihad to prove what a "real quarterback" can do. Posted by: BumperStickerist at January 16, 2012 07:09 PM I think that's part of what motivates Brady, but I think the major factor is that he had lost 3 playoff games in a row and he was on a mission to end that streak. Tebow getting all the attention was just a little added motivation. Granted, I don't think anyone ever said that Tebow was better than Brady, just that Tebow was now a bigger celebrity athlete than Brady at the moment. I don't think Brady cares about the celebrity as much as he cares about winning. The guy's a fierce competitor.

Never reached 60% completion until his 5th year I believe. I don't recall anyone trying to run him out of town, just that he needed "more work". Now he finally has a good season and has his first playoff win after 7 years. What are the chances Tebow gets 7 years to prove himself? ZERO.

Tebow is a rarity in pro sports: an athlete who isn't a vicious illiterate thug. Rather than celebrate this, far too many people seem to be mad at him for making all the vicious illiterate thugs look bad.

Tell you what, fellow atheists: if Tim Tebow should stop professing his faith in public, then Richard Dawkins should stop professing his absence of faith.

He threw for the 6th most yards in NFL history in 2009.

The Texans are a serious force now, and will be absolutely dominant going forward.  They have an All Pro RB, an All Pro WR, and a #1 or #2 defense.

This year they lost one starter to injury in every single game, and still made the post season.  They lost to the Ravens by one score because of a 3rd string rookie QB with 7 NFL starts.

Don't let primetime appearances dictate how you rank teams.  That's also why no one knew how good the 49ers really were this year.

354 One thing I did notice is that it seemed that Tebow was stuck with just a small number of plays and Denver seemed to know which one they were going to run every time.

Tebow does not call any of the plays. I watched as play after play, Tebow was in that option formation, got snap and handed ball off to runner and a Denver defensive player was in their face almost immediately. Tebow was scrambling on almost every play because Denver was getting to him so quickly. Whether it was poor offensive line play, Denver defence playing better than normal or the play that was coming was too obvious, but it was a massacre for poor Tebow.

Look, he is a rookie. I just hope that the coaching staff will have the guts to load him up with a lot more plays and get him throwing more and more to see if he can pick up the receivers. If he can't handle it then, well, then we will know if he is good enough or not.

Considering what he had to work with and that this is just a young team turning things  around, I think Denver did a great job this year.

Envy is a real bitch.  Not only does it cause people to complain about a mid-grade NFL quarterback like he was responsible for hangnails and the 'flu, it also gave rise to each and every iteration of collectivist "gimme" political systems attempted in history.  Not jealousy, mind, but envy.  You can be jealous of, or covetous of, your neighbor's car / wife / job / whatever, but once you cross the line wherein you say "if I can't have it, why should he / she?", you're in envytown.  Welcome to being a twisted and sad person, incapable of enjoying what you have, no matter its worth.

360 Tom Brady dies and goes to heaven and is greeted by God, who shows him to his new house – a cozy, modest home with a Patriots flag flying from the porch. “Gee, thanks God!” says Brady, feeling very special. As Brady walks to his door, he notices another house down the street – a sprawling, gorgeous home with a 50-foot pole flying a Broncos flag, a swimming pool shaped like a horse, and a Tim Tebow jersey pinned to the front door. “Um, God?” Brady begins. “I’m not ungrateful, but I don’t get it. I won three Super Bowls and went to the Hall of Fame. Why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?” God chuckles. “That’s not Tim’s house,” he replies. “That’s mine.”

382 376 If the Ravens try to cover the Cheatriots tight ends and Welker, Brady will usually prevail. Baltimore's key to victory is to flush Brady out of the pocket and harass him since he's not elusive nor nearly as effective when he has to move.

The Ravens won't make it a shootout no matter how bad NE's defense is, so if Brady is connecting those short passes all day long, it'll be another boring blowout

Posted by: kbdabear at January 16, 2012 08:27 PM (Y+DPZ)

The Pats' tight ends can't be covered under any normal scheme.  That's why they're so devastating.  If you attempt to bring your safeties up to help, you're leaving either Welker or Branch with man coverage, which is an invitation for big plays to the outside, and also the middle with Welker, as he is possibly the most precise route-runner in football today.  Bawlmer must get to Brady quickly and consistently - there is no way to cover the Pats' WRs and TEs for any extended period.

384 What really surprised me and probably the rest of the world in the last minutes of the Niners - Saints game wasn't the Saints getting to the end zone twice in a hurry, it was the Niners doing the same in reply.  Conventional Wisdom was that the Niners were not a team that could come from behind quickly.

For a brief time, Alex Smith was Joe Montana reincarnate

392 The final numbers will be different from those released on caucus night. One campaign source says the vote count as of midday Monday showed Santorum ahead by 80-something votes. If that number holds through certification of the last precincts, Santorum will win. Of course, there is always the possibility that some of the final precincts will contain discrepancies that put Romney back on top. It's just not clear.

I just rid of my 6 year old PC a few months ago (XP, not Vista), and had a huge improvement in performance with the increase in processor and RAM power.  With high-bandwidth and web 2.0 stuff, it's possible that your 5 year old processor just can't push the firehose of modern internet through the drinking fountain that is your old machine.

They'll run, but it's incidental.  Opposite what conventional wisdom was prior to Bill Walsh, the Pats use the pass to set up the run.  Presented with an easy 4 yards on the ground, they'll take it, but it's certainly not their bread and butter.  I can see why it's so easy to hate them and respect them at the same time.

396 After a big success is a great time to pray for humility. Posted by: MikeTheMoose Camellia Sinensis Operative at January 16, 2012 07:36 PM Yep, it's nice to see when successful people realize that their success is not solely due to themselves, that they were blessed with talent before they developed the work ethic to make use of that talent. Just remember Rudy of Notre Dame fame. The young man had all the heart, desire and work ethic, but just was not blessed with athletic skill or size. That was not his fault. But he made use of every ounce of talent the good Lord gave him. So it's always nice to see when successful people, especially athletes, remember that their success is not all about them only. They were blessed. Speaking of which, wasn't there an actress at some awards thing a few years ago where she went off saying she's sick of people thanking God after accepting an award, that her success was solely due to her working hard, so she's just going to thank herself or some such? I guess she didn't stop to realize that she was blessed with good looks and the ability to memorize lines well, something that some people can't have, no matter how much work they put in.

I'm running decent virus and malware programs. I also run CCleaner every few days. Does anyone have a fix for the computer slowing down? I've eliminated unneeded stuff.

I'm terrified to use CC cleaner. It'll probably delete all of my stored passwords, history that I want to keep and every cache file that lets my old box load quickly.

I ran it once to clean my registry and it seemed to help but I've used similar programs that eradicated all sorts of cookies and passwords I wanted to keep.

These kinds of programs usually allow you to pick and choose which files and cookies you want to keep, but since they number into the thousands, all with enigmatic file names, I'm very leery about using CC cleaner and similar programs.

They'd be great if their instructions were written for the non computer geek.

The best thing I've done to improve my computer performance was to get an external drive so my C drive is only 75% full. Combined with a defrag it helped for a while but I'm back to daily lock ups again.

Malwarebytes never found a thing on my PC and only wasted disk space.

400 As far as Tebow and the "pros" saying he won't make it, I wish they would go look at Alex Smiths' career stats. First year as a starter he was 1TD and 12 INTs. Never reached 60% completion until his 5th year I believe. I don't recall anyone trying to run him out of town, just that he needed "more work". Now he finally has a good season and has his first playoff win after 7 years. What are the chances Tebow gets 7 years to prove himself? ZERO. Posted by: TendStl at January 16, 2012 07:56 PM Yep, and the Tebow-haters claim that he gets all the criticism, because he was a 1st Round pick. Well, Smith was a #1 pick and he hasn't gotten even 1/100th the vitriol and criticism in 7 years that Tebow has gotten in the past 7 months. As an aside, Smith has quite a personal story and I've been rooting for him since I read/heard about it. As far as football, he's gone through 7 OCs in his 7 years, I think. So no consistency at all. And a while back, while struggling with the pressure of trying to be a successful NFL QB, he lost his best friend to suicide and that really hit him hard. He has gone through some tough times in his life and has been on the brink of losing it, but has pushed through and survived. So I'm really happy to see him finally get a great coach to bring out his best and get him to succeed. Great success story, no matter how far they go from here.

As a Patriots fan who enjoys the exes and ohs and so forth of football, I think there's two things you can do to slow down the Pats offense.

And there is nothing else you can do to beat the Patriots, unless you're the Manning Colts or the Rodgers Packers-- you can't outscore them.

1) beat the crap out of the receivers.  This is less effective with Gronk in the picture, but you can take the receivers out of the play in this manner.

2) I cannot stress this enough:  You have to get to Brady.  You have to put a hand in his face, or push the center into his lap, or get the back of his jersey dirty.  He makes the best decisions in the NFL when he is clean and pretty.  He makes some bad decisions when he's got a boo boo and he might get another one on any given snap.

If you can't get to Brady on a regular basis, then you can't beat the Patriots.  That's all.

The first cannot be done with tight ends.  They're too fast for DEs, and LBs have other responsibilities that make it nearly impossible to hit the TEs inside the legal zone for contact, which is within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage.  Any attempt to bring 'backers up to hit Gronkowski and Hernandez inside 5 yards and disrupt their routes will result in the 'Pats (boo!) immediately having success running the ball.

The second is necessary.  It is the only way, short of a voodoo hex, or Brady and his receivers having the turnover and dropped-passes type of day the Packers just had.  No defense exists that has the resources to cover all the Pats' weapons for more than a few seconds.  To be successful, the D must get to Brady and force him into bad positions, or the offense must be effective enough to outscore the Patriots.  As bad as the Pats' defense has been, this can be an option, but I don't see it as likely for the teams remaining in the playoffs.

" I don't recall anyone trying to run him out of town"

 [speaking of Alex Smith]

You obviously don't live in the Bay Area or know any 49er fans.  There has never been a hometown athlete so hated as Smith was until this year, having to live up to the legacy of Montana and Young and falling so conspicuously short.  Didn't help that the 49ers passed up Rodgers to draft him.  Lots of arguments about whether it was the galactically incompetent offensive coaching (until this year) or he just sucked.  Luckily (I've been a die-hard 49er fan since before Walsh and Montana) the answer now looks like it's the coaching.  If Tebow gets coaching as bad as Alex's 1st 6 years he will *want* to leave Denver.

Posted by: Gary Rosen at January 16, 2012 11:25 PM (9CzKK)

420 While looking around the 'net to find some stories about brady shunning Tebow, I stumbled across a report and some video about why brady's home state did not draft him.  The summary is that brady was a lousy qb, bottom of the barrel.  They had video and statistics to back up their argument.  Quite interesting finding this coming on the heels of brady's win on saturday.  If brady could improve to that extent, it is possible, with training and dedication, Tebow can too.
I'm still VERY disappointed in brady's actions against Tebow and the atrocious behavior of the MA fans.

422 Hmm ... gotta ask. Is Tebow behind his own media phenomenon or is the media?

Because it occurs to me that, if I were a marketing genius, I'd want to play up the religious angle in order to bring in viewers who otherwise didn't care about Denver. Controversy sells, after all.   So deliberately make some Tebow-bashing stunts like the SNL skit. Play it up like it's some kind of WWF match between Light and Dark, Good and Evil,   God versus the Devil (or, if you prefer,  Orthodoxy versus Freedom).  That way all the rubes can tune in and scream themselves hoarse over what is, in the end, just a football game.

Bottom line is that both the religious people defending Tebow and the atheists attacking him are being played for fools.

@423 I'm still VERY disappointed in brady's actions against Tebow and the atrocious behavior of the MA fans.

What actions against Tebow? What atrocious behavior? I was at that game, and the worst thing that happened was a TEEEEEEEBOW chant from the whole stadium in the 3rd quarter, which was funny as hell. I can see how you might think the Brady punt was insulting, since it was a huge slap at "Tebow time," but it's a legit NFL play.

I had to listen to a whole week of Tebow lovefests and hype, not to mention assertions that the Pats can't win playoff games and that Denver was on fire and going to steamroll us. I have nothing against Tebow personally. I think he's a nice guy, that being religious is a VERYGOOD thing in most cases, and that it's not his fault that the media hyped him up like it did. Despite that, it still felt awesome to totally dominate that game just to shut everyone up.
