— Open Blogger I'm not a big proponent of the death penalty, particularly in light of the steady trickle of years-after-the-fact conviction reversals due to better processing of DNA evidence. But I'm willing to make key exceptions.
The bastard, the young punk who shot up the Aurora theater filled with adults, teens, and kids is one.
This strikes close to home, literally. My wife and I live in Parker, which immediately south of Aurora. The theater complex in which we see 90%+ of our movies is actually in Aurora, though it's a different complex than where the vicious attack occurred. And, yes, we've gone to midnight showings.
I'm currently on the road, though on my way home -- I'm writing this from the Admiral's Club in the D terminal at DFW Airport. Knowing our movie habits, one of our daughters called me from California just to be sure we were safe; my wife's brother, for the same reason, caller her at 7 am this morning. I've texted another daughter who actually lives in Aurora and who, like me, is an avid movie-goer and may well have gone to a midnight showing of Batman last night. I still haven't heard back from her, and I hate the fact that she could well have been there and that perhaps she was, and that I just don't know.
[UPDATE (1215 ET): She's fine. Finally heard back from her while waiting to board my plane. But she's worried about some friends that she hasn't heard back from yet.]
My wife told me on the phone a while ago that the shooter didn't kill hiimself, didn't do suicide-by-cop, but simply surrendered. He clearly wants to live to enjoy the notoriety, the platform he will have for weeks and months and years to come.
Fine. Give it to him. I won't say that hanging's too good for him; I'll say instead that hanging is just the start. ..fritz..

We moved out of the Denver metro area a little over three years ago. I wanted out of any urban area as I knew what was coming. Too bad there weren't a boatload of armed people in the theater.
UK Mail online reports the perp is a member of a violent faction of the Occupy movement. Don't know if that's true.

Does Colorado widely hand out concealed carry permits? Because they should.
I know in California, they are technically legal, but it is nearly impossible to ever get one.

I agree. The surety of a swift punishment, absent a media circus, would go a long way towards making sure that these things were even more infrequent.
I'm also of the same mind about terrorists. I believe that if we were to start executing them, which is our right under the Geneva Conventions, we wouldn't be groped and treated like potential terrorists at our own airports. Let those animals know we absolutely will not tolerate them or their tactics.

Tell your family to go for seven figures if you ever get shot at work.
Kinda related, I posted this yesterday...mother of armed robber suing Kroger, because her son was killed while threatening an employee while trying to rob the store. She claims Kroger is liable for her son's death because they have a no-guns-at-work policy, and the employee who stopped her son from assaulting a co-worker was carrying in violation of that policy. (no criminal charges were filed against the employee, which was correct.)

I suppose I can oppose capital punishment, but I think alternative rehabilitations need to be applied to compensate for the cost of their incarceration, prosecution, damage to society, etc.....like organ harvesting, medical experimentation, and psychological experimentation. Why should we have to wait until someone naturally develops cancer, when we can introduce tumors into inmates and then apply various treatments in a controlled environment?

Illogical. Death penalty opponents always go to this argument ("I'm against the death penalty, except for really heinous crimes, because we might make a mistake.")
The chances of making a mistake doesn't depend on the heinousness of the crime. Or if it does, a mistake is more likely in a particularly heinous case, because of the public outcry to punish someone.
I think if you support the death penalty for anyone, for any crime whatsoever, you have to accept you might make a mistake. OTOH, the purpose of the death penalty - and all criminal justice, for that matter - is to minimize the terror in society. Eliminating it entirely, while desirable, ain't gonna happen.

OTOH, I'm cool with the method of execution following the method in which the murders were committed. There was a case in MKE where a boy killed his grandmother (for refusing to give him money to abort her great-grandchild) by duct-taping her hands and feet, then taping a garbage bag over her head. Took her many minutes to die. That would be a much more suitable punishment for the perp than a quick injection.

And of course that will be the end of it as far as the MSM is concerned. Meanwhile, anything he's ever said or written that sounds remotely aligned with Republican politics will be ironclad proof that he was an evil right winger Tea Partier.

This.
Otherwise we get to engage in the interesting debate about just how many human lives must be taken before death is a suitable penalty.
Justice has always been about a balancing of the scales. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life. Period. Anything other than a system of that sort is an indefensible abberation from the natural order. Though personally I see no need for 'creative' execution methods - let death be the max and have done with it.
