Today in History, October 14, 1912: Teddy Roosevelt Takes a Bullet
— Dave in Texas

Yeah, he shouldn't a gone all Bull Moose Party. But he still took a bullet.

That counts for something.

on October 14, 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was shot in Milwaukee by would-be assassin John Schrank, who had stalked him for three weeks through eight states. With a .38-calibre bullet still in his chest and blood soaking through his clothes, Roosevelt nevertheless addressed an audience of 9,000-12,000 people in Milwaukee Auditorium for 80 minutes, joking at one point that "It takes more than one bullet to kill a Bull Moose."

8 Teddy was one of the last old school speakers in the presidency too, the ones who gave it an old fashioned formal presentation with a special speaking voice used only for speeches.

Remember that under Wilson 1913-16 America hadn't joined the war. (And if TR had been President 1913-16, America would have joined that war immediately.)

Given a President Wilson or Taft 1913-16, The election that mattered for getting into the war was 1916, not 1912.

23 Teddy Roosevelt was a better man than just some narcissist. He made something of himself in his life, too, he wasn't just an empty chair with a huge ego. All politicians have an unrealistically great opinion of themselves, its like being the front man for a band: you have to be willing to go out and be in front of cameras and sell yourself without shame or self consciousness. Only a really big ego can even try that.

________

That's a huuuuuge stretch at best.  History is linear, but current events are not.  At the time, those were current events, so saying that avoiding a TR presidency would've avoided WWII and so on cannot be done with any degree of certainty.

30 Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo intellectual at October 14, 2012 06:57 PM (wR+pz) You're arguing a logical fallacy. History plays out the way it plays out, with about a million billion variables shaping each distinct event in a given causal chain. That's why we classify alternate histories as fiction, from which fantasy authors like Harry Turtledove make lots and lots of money. So get a grip. Note the 'fantasy' part of fantasy authors. Blaming Teddy Roosevelt for Hitler is off-the-charts ridiculous.

Barky, on the other hand...has a policy of 'speak bullshit and bow a lot'.

Barky's 'stick' is on loan from the foresight and valor, of those who came before him.

Wilson got us into WWI.  We don't go into WWI  then there would be no Hitler.  There would be no treaty of Versailles, demanding reparations from Germany.  Germany would have basically settled for a truce and the same borders.  No Weimar Republic, caused by the Treaty.  No Hitler.

Also, we would not have the split up of the German Empire a source of revenue for them.

It is really pretty obvious for those THAT did study history.

Not a particularly great president, but neither was Teddy. Still, I'd take either over Obama. Teddy wouldn't bow to anyone and Andrew Jackson would horsewhip the Egyptian emissary out of the White House.

Posted by: BUTCH at October 14, 2012 03:12 PM (nK2Sx)

64 Taft probably would've entered WWI also

I had the notion that Taft was less about the fighting and more about keeping America laissez-faire. He did not interfere much during the most important (to America) international crisis of his day, which was the Mexican Revolution.

Also Taft was involved in the "league to enforce peace" which was an attempt to broker the First World War, not to join any side in it.

So I don't see Taft getting involved in WW1, 1913-16.

Posted by: Billy Bob, pseudo intellectual at October 14, 2012 03:13 PM (wR+pz)

67 WWI started long before we got into it. Whoever sitting in the Oval Office at the time didn't matter a whit.  I believe that Ferdinand fellow getting assassinated set off the tinderbox in Europe, and we didn't show up for the first two years.  So, WWI happened anyways, the treaty of Versaille happened regardless, which was all France and not much Wilson, so the seeds of WWII were planted no matter what.

You're getting paid too much.

Posted by: Uncle Mikey at October 14, 2012 03:14 PM (0qaTS)

68 I think its a bit unwarranted to say we'd have never gotten involved in WWI unless Wilson was president. Those were different times. I agree we shouldn't have gotten involved, but the truth is, Germany probably would have lost even without us anyway. So the whole "there never would have been a Hitler" thesis is difficult to defend in any case.

There's a range in the basement of the WH.  I wouldn't be surprised if he's packing in his public appearances.  Anti-gun Democrats are frequently pro-gun for themselves.

Uncle Mikey,

No you read the cliffs notes.  England conned us into entering the war.  WWI basically destroyed the UK.  They ceased being the capital of capitalism, they had to go into debt to us to pay for the war.  NYC took over from London.  Most of their upper class was killed in the war.  They could not continue to support their colonies. They never recovered after 1918.  WWI was the biggest disaster in the 20th century.  700,000 people died at the battle of Verdun That was ONE battle.  Repeat over and over.

103 Jim Bennett to John O'Sullivan over at the NRO The Corner: John, let me suggest that the criteria for victory are changing. The debate no longer ends when the debaters walk off stage. And now it no longer ends when the TV spinners have, like cuckoos, laid their eggs and flown away. There is now the long, long reverberation in social media, where the basic debate footage serves as raw material for mash-ups and parodies and treatments for the rest of the election cycle and beyond. And BidenÂ’s performance, which won him some tactical advantage in the debate, has set him up as the target for rich satire and a way that RyanÂ’s conventional performance didnÂ’t and cannot do. His performance is comic gold, and although within hard-core Dem/left circles he will be celebrated as the warrior, everywhere else, and especially for basically apolitical young YouTube viewers, he will be the jackass supreme. I suspect that by Election Day, the various parodic videos will have had a larger viewership than the debate itself. By this criterion, the tactic was a massive miscalculation. I like it.

Eleven years after September 11th, Americans were attacked on September 11th by terrorists who preplanned to kill Americans. That happened and we can't be in denial. He built the U.S. Navy (Navy Day is observed on his birthday - he launched the Great White Fleet on a global tour) and founded Naval Aviation (he was one of the first Americans to ride on a plane...in 1910 when it was still chancey).

He was a naturalist who  contributed to the collections of the American Museum of Natural History, basically created the National Parks system by setting aside 150 million acres of forests and explored a previously unexplored river of the Amazon, which Brazil named Rio Roosevelt.

He was invited to deliver the Romanes Lecture at Oxford (like Gladstone and Huxley before him) , was the president of the American Historical Association and elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters...he wrote 28 books.  He was the first president to write a book in office. It was "The Deer Family."  As a big game hunter, he shot a charging rhino from 13 paces away.

Bush went aboard an aircraft carrier and said, "mission accomplished" I listened rightfully so to people saying, look, but there's still problems, and they're still dying, and quite frankly, things got worse in many ways after that famous statement. I am so sick of this shit. The mission to take Iraq was accomplished. No doubt about that. In record time and without many problems. The later parts of occupying and building Iraq (instead of the rational idea of just taking the oil fields and letting the Iraqis run around in the desert stabbing each other in the butt as arabs are wont to do) were a totally different mission. Issa and othes who cede this idiot point about "mission accomplished" really tick me off to no end. A mission is not a war, FFS.

179 re: P-38s.  The problem was diving from high altitude in pursuit of enemy aircraft.  It was termed a compressibility dive.  P-47s also suffered it.  Had to ride the coffin down until the air was thick enough for the pilot to try and wrench the plane out of the dive.  Most times it never happened.  IIRC P-38Js and P-38Ls had this small speed flat on the underside of each wing, it would break up the airflow enough for the controls to be effective when deployed.

203 158 I think there were probably a few guys during WWII that busted the sound barrier in P-38's in a dive...but they never lived to talk about it. The Hulk yanking on the P-38's stick when it was trans sonic couldn't pull it out of a dive. After a number of notable crashes in dives that weren't pulled out of, they installed speed brakes on the later models. Posted by: @PurpAv at October 14, 2012 07:47 PM (U6/KF) Compressibility, reversed controls -- all the stuff that plagued the development of the first X-planes prevented P-38 pilots from pulling out of a supersonic dive. They tried mass balances and other stuff on the elevator to no avail. In many ways it was a great plane but it had so many glitches Lockheed had tons of field engineers always trying to figure out its many problems and get them corrected. One model only had a dynamo on the right engine so if that failed you had to run on battery power until you had to bail out or crash land. I read a good personal account of a pilot who became a POW because of it. There are also unsupported claims of P-47s and P-51s breaking the sound barrier. Their air speed indicators, however, just weren't capable of accurately measuring those speeds.

Swing dancing is great.  Argentine tango is fun, especially as it's a more mature crowd, so the drama is different.  The venues tend to be a little more on the respectable side.  Plus it gives the women an excuse to spend ungodly amounts of money on clothing.

Contra dancing is kind of like line dancing crossed with square dancing, but it's very fun and a very nice crowd.  Just be careful because it's infested with libs, so you get a real eclectic mix.

276 217 P-38's performed poorly in the cold and damp European theater. They did very well indeed in the Pacific. Posted by: steevy at October 14, 2012 08:11 PM (6o4Fb) A lot of it is dictated by what your opponents can do and the tactics you choose accordingly. For example, I read a book about the air war in the Southern Pacific. P-40s were supposed to be dogs in the air but lots of P-40 pilots loved them. They did a "one and done", bouncing from altitude or out of the sun with one firing pass. Then they would dive and no Zero could keep up with them. They decimated groups of Betty bombers escorted by Zeros with this tactic. So the most successful groups learned their advantages and disadvantages and played to their strengths.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 14, 2012 04:41 PM (AeC6r)

307 And in the Pacific the P-38 was going to be mediocre until a certain civilian tech-rep named Charles Lindburg helped figure out the throttle and prop settings for extended range. There are even stories of Lindburg flying with Bong and McGuire's unit and scoring aerial victories, as a civilian. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 14, 2012 08:18 PM (iJ34D) Actually, Lindbergh figured that out for bombers in the ETO. It's called "getting on the step", where you climb to about 50' to 100' above cruising altitude and then slowly let the plane drift down to cruising altitude. Otherwise you were always flying with a small nose up attitude that reduced range considerably. As for the stories of Lindbergh's combat experience, I'm afraid they'll always be unconfirmed stories.

Ask yourselves this:  would Teddy Roosevelt have allowed an ambassador to be murdered?  Would he have bowed to a Saudi?  Would he have approved gay marriage?  Would he have worn mom jeans?

No and no and no and no.

His mistake in running as a 3rd party guy came from his mistake in saying he wouldn't run for re-election.  It was a blunder.

However,  as president he was swell.  And his daughter was a super-sarcastic fixture for years in Washington.

He was a real person who was interesting.  A man,  as opposed to a metrosexual loser.

360 I like Glenn Beck.  He just didn't have enough material for a daily 1 hour show.

Boy was he right about the Left and the Jihadis getting together.

361 354 The entry of the U.S. into WWI was all about bailing out the banks that lent money to the Brits and French. Posted by: Bart who lurks with SMOD 2012, master of his domain at October 14, 2012 08:57 PM (he2LC) Ever heard of the Zimmerman telegram?

362 Why I distrust Glenn Beck:

1.  He started in opposing George Bush way before Bush was unpopular.  He seemed to me to have a jealousy of Bush because he was rich and good-looking.

2. The Teddy Roosevelt thing.  I am tired of hearing about it.  Before Beck,  no one thought Roosevelt was any sort of anti-capitalist.  Beck single handedly tried to demonize him.

3. Snarky comments about Sarah Palin, Rudy Guiliani, and others.  Thought SANTORUM was some sort of hero similar to Washington!!

I don't like him.  So anyone quoting him is immediately reduced to the status of an idiot.

The end.

363 Ever heard of the Zimmerman telegram? --- Was that where racist vigilante George Zimmerman gloated about gunning down an innocent law-abiding African-American child?

Posted by: Gerald Gashgrinder at October 14, 2012 05:14 PM (Ho6UX)

369 TR had little regard for the Constitution,he was in fact a progressive. He gave us the income tax which started the ball rolling on big government.

Wrong.  The sixteenth amendment was proposed and passed long after Roosevelt left office.  It was first proposed in July 1909, and then ratified and took effect in early 1913.

>>>A .25 is gonna bounce off 6'8" 380 lb. Bubba's brain pan like a ping pong ball and only piss him off worse. Especially if he's on drugs.

I worked with a guy a few years ago, 6'5" 250 lb.  He got shot in the chest with a 25. It bounced off. But it chipped a bone inside that cut his heart and he was dead in about a minute. So you can never tell.........

374 375 TR was a trust buster. To Beck that makes him a pinko commie. Posted by: Gerald Gashgrinder at October 14, 2012 09:14 PM (Ho6UX) "Trusts" (i.e. monopolies) have always failed on their own because got fat and lazy and somebody else figured out how to beat them at their own game. The only "trusts" that need to be broken are those created and subsidized by the government. So basically, Beck is correct.

375 304 #251 That's it. I am going to go get a shotgun. I have a pistol but I am not sure I could hit something with it while under stress. (I do well on the range.) Not to be an asshole, but if you like the idea that much then buy it yourself and turn it into a park. It's my same answer to leftard groups that want to do the same. Can't afford that? Get some backers. Not enough backers? Maybe the idea isn't as desirable as you thought.

It was government land, Boomer.

I'm not aware of Teddy Roosevelt taking anyone's land to create parks with.

His setting aside beautiful parts of it, prevented those who came after him from leasing it to mining company cronies...or having it used as test sites for whatever subsequent governmental entities decided they wanted to use it for.

And they make tactical models Posted by: Ed Anger at October 14, 2012 09:43 PM (tOkJB) The Mossberg Model 500 remains the standard for personal defense and law enforcement use, but I still don't understand why shotguns would require rails and all that other shit. If you're using a shotgun, it means you're close enough to see the bad guy's expression. And call me old-fashioned, but I keep my commie surplus Yugo SKS in its original wooden stock although really nifty looking aftermarket 'tactical' stocks are readily available. I stick to iron sights as opposed to red-dot, since anything battery-powered is subject to reliability issues. Seems to me 'tactical' has become descriptive of a style, a certain movie cool aesthetic with few or no real functional enhancements--which isn't to say SWAT teams and soldiers don't need--and shouldn't use--the latest and best technology. Me, all I want from a given firearm is reliability and center-mass accuracy at the range offered by the platform.

380 Barky Ocarter, once and future, Preezy does something similar every month. He and Mooch both bleed like a stuck hog and drone on for hours. Unlike Roosevelt's stunt of taking a bullet, Barky takes a load from Reggie, for the good of the country. Unlike TR, barky is a feckless candy assed turd goblin. Barky's speech would sound like "It takes more than Reggie and shitloads of golf to stop a Bull Shitter!" And immediately after the speech Reggie and Jimmy Kimmel would fight to kiss Barky's scrawny ass first, and in public. Barky could start his own new party... The BullShit Party.
