Today Its Zombies: What Will Tomorrow Bring?
— Russ from Winterset

Even though I like to "wargame" zombie scenarios, I find myself agreeing with TTAG on this issue. Enough with the zombie-related merchandise. Besides, if the zombies DO rise from their graves and come shambling after your flesh & brains, I doubt they'll be intimidated by your shooting them with Hornady Zombie Max ammo using an EOtech "biohazard" holographic sight. Now a "Hello Kitty" themed AR15? That might elicit some awe from the undead horde. But I digress.

The good thing about seeing the zombies jumping the shark (if a zombie bites a shark, does it morph into a zombieshark?) is that it makes me think "what's next"?

"How I Met Your Mother"-themed knives & non-lethal self-defense items?

"Big Bang Theory" Big Bore Double Rifles?

My vote? Wile E. Coyote, Soooper Genius ACME Tactical Gear.

25 I was a big fan of the Romero movies as a kid, many years before the current zombie craze was kicked into gear with "28 Days Later" and the '04 "Dawn of the Dead" remake.  Zombies were a sub-sub-genre of horror, something represented only by old, worn VHS copies of these and a few other movies that you sometimes had to dig to find, and seemed all the more bizarre and frightening because of it.

I really liked both "28 Days" movies and the DOTD remake.  Thought it was cool that zombies were getting wider popular exposure because hey, more product.  But by now all the weirdness and fun have been sucked right out of the zombie concept because zombies are everywhere you turn around.  They've been oversaturated in media to the point I'm beyond sick of them now.  They've become cultural touchstones for hipster douchebags.  And they're all the more wearisome because there's really only a very limited variation on the kinds of stories you can tell about them before beating the whole idea into the ground.  The Zombie Bubble is overdue to burst.

The supersaturation of zombie-themed productions (and "[Fill-in-the-Historical-Figure-or-Literary-Hero/ine-Name], Vampire Hunter" type of production as well) is all down to cowardly leftist screenwriters who, deep down, know that they and we want to blast away hordes of (Sunni and Shi'a) jihadis.

These screenwriter types (I'm using the term broadly) can't own up to designating radical Islamists as irredeemably evil and bent on either enslaving all in their path or slaughtering those who will not submit, because owning up to this assessment -- naming and judging our enemy -- would be tantamount in their worldview to acquiescing in racism.

They couldn't live with themselves if it means confronting the truth, and so they set their thinking in lockstep with the folks currently running the show out of Pennsylvania Avenue and their drivel about man-caused disasters etc.

The morally cheap compromise solution the screenwriter types come up with is to play to the hormonal essentials, to pander to the justifiable core rage the American public feels towards jihadi evildoing, but at the same time pull a popular-culture switcheroo as to the identity of the object(s) of that rage.  Instead, we get the morally neutral "threat" posed by hordes of zombies, vampires, lycans, aliens, whatever -- all relentless and "acceptably" dehumanized.

It was strange at the time that although Gabriele Giffords was a serving Congresswoman, a Federal District Judge was also shot and killed.  Hardly a mention of that, as I viewed the article about Giffords retiring today.  The article also mentioned and named her aid that was killed.  But no mention of the judge, who happened to also be a Republican.  He is a non-person now, and has ceased to exist.

Forever after, Jared Loughner will be remembered as the man who shot Congresswoman Giffords and ended her "promising" career in politics.  The name of Judge Rollins has disappeared down the memory hole.

You're a bit of a fatuous asshole, aren't you?  You seemed to have missed the whole episode of sobbing and weeping because the wonderful young Gabriele Giffords, a Democrat, had "crosshairs" put on her district by the evil troll Sarah Palin.  And that was what made Jared Loughner shoot her - not his advanced psychopathic behavior that went totally unoticed by the local Sheriff despite continual public clues of his tendencies toward violent expression.

Because if Judge Roll's death was considered, it would tend to take away the partisan nastiness that some in the Media wanted to paint on this whole tragedy. And it was a tragedy for those killed and injured that day, including Gabby Giffords.  She was the one, though, that has been made into a martyr by the Media (not of her making) to the shooting that day.
