Todd Akin Withdrawing From Missouri Senate Race?
— Ace

@ewerickson and @richardgrennell are twittering that he will withdraw tomorrow.

Missouri is an absolutely-necessary pickup if we are going to repeal ObamaCare and put this country right. It is not a state we can afford to lose.

If Akin is actually putting patriotic duty ahead of ego and ambition, I'd give that man a lot of respect. And maybe that wouldn't count for much this cycle, but it would in future ones.

3 I hope he does.  Good of the state and country first.  Then we can get all the screeching, wailing, and gnashing of teeth done.  Along with some stopping the rending of their garments, those images are seared I tell you...

4 I hope so.

Obama either has Satan looking out for him or Mike Huckabee bought....

this was the single stupidest move I have seen by a Senatorial candidate from our side in a LONG time.

5 so what did he mean say? you shouldn't be able to claim you were raped when you're already seven months pregnant? Sounded like it from a comment on the previous thread.
Well, maybe we can get Alan Keyes to run again

9 He needs to drop out. And I agree, I will have a lot more respect for him if he does. There is no way to defend what he said and creates am unnecessary and untruth angle of attack for the Dems. If nothing else, we're talking about this rather than a failed Presidency. Not a good trade.

10 This isn't rocket science.  If he actually resigns, and resigns for  what he knows would be best for, not MO, but for the country, then my hat is off to him.  He has my respect.

82 The GOP must operate by a different set of rules than the Democrats thanks to  the MSM.  We can either just bitch about it or do something.  In this case, the best option is to force this guy to resign.  Rather than let the Dems and MSM call the GOP hypocrats, the GOP should live up to higher standards.  That could be good politics.  Contrast this with Biden.  Look at McCotter.  The Dems were trying to tell us that there is no fraud in voting.  And we can now point to one of our own to prove the opposite.  Its no longer partisan.  We should use these scandals/misstatements to our advantage when possible.  This is one such case.

87 In his speech and statement, he should throw a shot at Biden:

Akin should say that although it was simply a misstatement that didn't reflect his soul, as an individual and as a Republican he understands that words have meaning, that it's something for which there could be repercussions. And, thus, he accepts responsibility for his mistakes in the hopes of elevating the dialogue of the nation to the pressing issues at hand: the debt, unemployment, saving and reform of Medicare.

Then the surrogates ask why Republicans have standards and the White House is defending Biden, why Obama is saying his surrogates didn't call Romney a Felon, etc.

111 I dunno......from the NYT (I know...I know.)  It says it's from 24 mins. ago.....

The language was more forceful than an earlier statement in which Mr. Romney and his running mate, Representative Paul D. Ryan, said they disagreed with Mr. AkinÂ’s views.

At least two Republican senators — Scott P. Brown of Massachusetts and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin — called for Mr. Akin to end his Senate campaign. George Allen, the Republican Senate nominee in Virginia, also condemned Mr. Akin’s comments.

Mr. Akin appeared later on Mike HuckabeeÂ’s radio program and said he would continue his Senate campaign.

“I’m not a quitter,” he said. “My belief is we’re going to take this thing forward, and by the grace of God, we’re going to win this race.”

But he also backtracked on his comments.

“Let me be clear,” he said. “Rape is never legitimate. It’s an evil act that’s committed by violent predators. I used the wrong words in the wrong way.”

He added: “I also know that people do become pregnant from rape. I didn’t mean to imply that that wasn’t the case.” He also said that he wanted to applogize “to those that I have hurt.”

Todd Akin apologized on Mike Huckabee's radio show today for comments he made about rape, and said he will remain in Missouri's U.S. Senate race. "I'm not a quitter," Akin said. "We all make mistakes," Akin said, disowning his previous comments that victims of "legitimate rape" can somehow prevent getting pregnant. "The many people who supported me know that when you make a mistake what you need to do is say you're sorry." 124 Overblown?

You show me how to successfully parse rape?

The law makes the distinction between forcible rape, statutory rape, sexual assault, etc.

Though both are considered rape, there's a difference between a rape that's done at knifepoint and an 18 year old having consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend.

While wrong in all circumstances, it's simply not the case that "rape is rape".

Though wrong and misguided, I suspect Akin was trying to suggest that women aren't prone to getting pregnant from forcible ("legitimate" in his unfortunate choice of words) rape.

So yeah- it was stupid, but at least a little overblown.

125 I think he was asked if he thought abortion was acceptable in the case of rape. I think he meant to say that this question was canard used by pro abortionists since there are very few  if any pregnancies as a result of rape. Is someone is pro life then no babies being killed is acceptable. If this is what he was trying to say, he was absolutely correct and I agree with him. Also, if there is a pregnancy from the rape, isn't the baby also a victim. What did the baby do which would require him/her to be killed.

138 I read about Akin's statement this morning and was thinking to myself, you know your running for US Senate and not dog catcher right Todd? Nothing like opening your mouth and turning a sure things into a cluster fuck that hurts the entire party because now Romney and Ryan have to stop what they are doing and respond to it. It also forces us so spend more to win a seat that should have been a near freebie. I voted for Brunner but I think Steelman coming in second is the obvious pick. Steelman came out early and condemned the statement and she is a female so its a natural fix that will minimize damage. Our Senate seat will still be a pick up for the Republicans but the margin of victory will be smaller. McCaskill's whole strategy would have been to claim Akin was far right fringe, you don't open your mouth and prove them right when you have a 11% advantage in the polls. Now Akin gets to sit at home think about how he could have been a Senator if only he didn't open his fucking mouth.

We in Missourah were bombarded with McCaskill's ads during the primary repeating over and over that Akin was the most extreme, most conservative candidate in the GOP primary (in order to encourage conservative Republicans to vote for him).  It was clear she wanted to run against him, and continue that theme into the general, directed at moderate swing voters.

If Akin withdraws, she'll be deprived of her favored opponent.  She won't be credibly able to throw the "extreme" label at his replacement, having exhausted that on him.  And I guarantee the MO GOP will select Sarah Steelman, whose gender will neutralize this issue.  All of McCaskill's strategy and plans will be for naught.

Steelman will beat McCaskill by at least 8.  No problem.

This is making lemonade out of lemons.

We need to stop whining about how the Democrats are treated differently  and use it to our advantage.  The guest host  on Rush today made a great point.  Its not just the message but also the messenger.  If I read Akin's comment  in the best possible light, I can find it not very troubling.  But he expressed his message so clumsily that it puts the focus on the wrong issue.  And his comment doesn't just affect him, but the campaign at large.  If this was an off-year election, I may agree that we shouldn't allow one misstatement to force a resignation.  But that is not the case here.   Certain gaffes can be more dangerous than others  based on the times they are uttered.  Let him resign, let's put this behind us, let's in the process point out how this is different from Biden's statement.  And let's continue to kick ass.  We should still win this seat.

No.  Here's some stupid:

1.  With an 11 point lead over your opponent, you chat-up some idiot on some stupid local TV show, rather than shutting your trap and coasting to the general.

2.  In an election about Obama's/McCaskill's horrible record, you talk about the difference between real and fake rape and how abortion isn't really necessary for the truly raped because their body magically "deals with it."

3.  You are unable to articulate a position you obviously hold dearly and have spent decades believing in a way other than in the most offensive terms.

4.  You persist in running when you have forced the president/vp nominees of your party to immediately and publicly shun you.

5.  You fail to withdraw even though the person who will replace you is just as conservative as you are and has as good of a chance or better at beating your opponent.

291 Christopher Taylor: Because the religious fanatics would support Joe Stalin if he made people obey the bible at gunpoint.

A quote from Barry Goldwater:

On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both.
I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?
And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."

Among 34 cases of rape-related pregnancy, the majority occurred among adolescents and resulted from assault by a known, often related perpetrator. Only 11.7% of these victims received immediate medical attention after the assault, and 47.1% received no medical attention related to the rape. Catholics backed Obama.  You explain to me in detail how alienating New England will gain us the Catholic pro-life vote.  I am a lapsed catholic, allow me to introduce my "good Catholic" friends Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, etc etc etc

1)there is no way to win the abortion issue in one election unless there was a seismic shift in public opinion that would be obvious....it is sadly not there.

2)the SCotUS has knocked down any attempt to ban it outright, so we must elect enough GOP to take a bite from the apple and win.

If Akin was the deciding vote on the 60th Senator spot in a caucus of total unity, we had the house on board, and the Presidential candidate was 10 points ahead it is a good gamble...

instead we risk charging up Obama's campus base with women to no gain on the issue anyway.

Even if every single conservative pundit and GOP official took an oath of silence on this issue, I bet you'd still see a precipitous drop in Akin's support within 48 hours. Especially among swing voters we're counting on to reject McCaskill.

To think that our refusing to acknowledge a real public fuckup will somehow make it go away is sheer magical thinking.

There is a good, intellecutual and honest argument,  albeit one held in the minority, for taking the position that abortion should be illegal in all cases including rape.  But because that argument is such a minority one, it must be made with great care.  Akin clumsily made it and further waded  into  Bachman territory by making a stupid claim of bodily reaction to go with it.  Invoking the term "legitimate rape" is never going to allow you to win that argument.  There is a long way to go in moving the football in the abortion battle, winning that argument strikes me as  the extra point, we need to score the touchdown first.

This actually doesn't surprise me. A woman who has been raped probably is in such awful shape after such a horrible attack that she's sick and messed up regularly anyway, so she could easily miss many of the early warning signs.

I don't think Akin's problem is with the electorate so much, it looks like the GOP movers and shakers don't love him no more.

Looks like no matter how intent Akin is on staying, someone is gonna make him an offer he can't refuse. It will be like what happened in NJ when the Torch got in trouble and the Jersey dems put that warmed over corpse Lautenberg in his stead.

I don't think so.  He very quietly decided not to run for re-election as governor.  No one is really sure why.  He was very young and had a hell of a political future ahead of him.  Something always smelled about that.

I voted for Bruner in the primary.  No prior political office.  Marine.  Successful businessman.  However, these qualities will actually hinder his chances to be the replacement if Akin steps aside.

Steelman has more ties to the state GOP (even though they may not love her, they know her); Bruner is very wealthy (no need for that comparison to Romney if not necessary); and Steelman is a woman (helps defuse the original controversy).

Listen up! (I'm going to hell who's coming with me) The argument over whether Akin should drop out/be forced to step aside does not contain as a necessary component a statement of belief as to one's position as pro-life, pro-abortion or the extent and nature of one's pro-life position. That is an ancillary argument but it is entirely possible to believe that abortion should be outlawed in all situations and that Akin should step aside. Those are not contradictory positions. The shrieking and the screeching about fundies and socons and who has the bigger political reality dick is as monotonous as it is predictable. It would behoove those on all sides of the issue to step back, take a deep breath and consider if it is truly necessary to impute the worst possible motives to those on the other side. Unless you disagree with me, in which case you clearly lack the mental capacity to remember to breathe. Before or after Plan B became as easily obtainable as MMs? Oh. Look. There's my eye. Twitching. I can't begin to discuss Plan B without screaming. It's not candy. It's not like taking an aspirin. It's not long term consequence free. It's not fucking joke. It's not okay to go to a party and hey there's a stack of Plan B on the table so it's okay. I am worried about what's going to happen to these young women when they hit 30 and realize they can't have kids now. I'm not against Plan B entirely but it should not be harder for me to get allergy medicine then it is for a 15 yo to get something the more or less medically induces a miscarriage. stompystompystompy

381 Yeah I don't miss Lott either, he was effective for the Republican Party but not for conservatism at any level.
The term 'legitimate' was the most problematic one, and if he'd skipped that he would have just confused people.
Rape is such a hot button emotional issue that people freak out when the topic is even brought up, so terms and concepts which otherwise might be simply questioned become horrific evils in some peoples' minds.
I suspect, although I can't read his mind, that he was trying to clarify that he wasn't talking about times when someone claims rape falsely. But it was a qualifier that wasn't necessary to make the point and hurt his argument.
In my mind, that means he handled it poorly, not that he's THE WORST CANDIDATE EVER THAT IS DOOMING US ALL AND OBAMA WILL GET REELECTED OMGS!!1!!1!!!!!
It just amazes me that a Republican can make one statement like this and even allies are screaming for him to retire and hide under a rock, and Democrats make idiotic statements all day long with just a shrug from both sides.

No Mike Happily right now I m in a Republic.

The ProLifer who harms any motion towards any small steps in ending this horror have a neat perspective in casting people who work within the system I thought we all love to work to fix it "murderers" when they get so wrapped up in the purity of their morals on an issue they hurt the ability to get enough people on their side of a matter to make any steps at all.

Mike, I am not your enemy we have been friends I know or at least trust you are not saying I favor pro choice.

Being called "pro murder" because I grasp the limits and obstacles is not fair.

I ordinarily refrain from the "reelect the marxist" but I cannot believe that a person who has just witnessed Obama order the Catholic Church to fund birth control thinks it ends there...he will in all likelihood with his pen shut down Catholic hospitals because he will force them to pay for abortions.

Beating Obama means any distraction we generate to hand to him to muddy the waters empowers him to Entertainment Tonight back to victory.

My God he held a press conference spiking the football at "I am against rape" and the media will infer that our whole party is as dumb as Akin.  It is not fair but he had to have known this or is too dumb to rely on.

sorry,
sven

402 "A small minority of devout Christians in the Republican Party think they can use the threat of withholding their vote to force us to go along with their program, regardless of the political costs, or the opinions of the majority i the party."
Which no one was arguing in the thread, hence the 'non sequitur.' When someone brings that up, feel free to throw your hysterical statement at people, but until then it just was out of the blue.
I really have no patience with people who argue that religious people and only religious people must shut up and deny their convictions when it comes to politics.

409 "A total 32.4% of these victims did not discover they were pregnant until they had already entered the second trimester"

Of course if the "rapes" had been reported, there would have been follow ups that would have revealed it in a matter of weeks.

Occams razor suggests the vast majority of these are someone's boyfriend knocking them up, getting sloshed and passed around like a prize at a party, etc and they don't want to admit to family/friends that they made some poor lifestyle choices, so blaming it on a faux rape is an easy way to save face and become a socially prized victim rather than a fool.

I can't buy that this sudden rape claim stuff is a high frequency event that's honest the majority of the time the claim is made.

410 Speaking as a Conservative in Missouri, I just want to win this seat back from Claire and the far left. I know some of you are pretty much single issue voters when it comes to abortion, so this appear to be the hill you want to plant your flag on. My hill is a little further ahead and has to do with a viable future and our country not collapsing under a mountain of debt and regulation. You guys feel free to stay on this hill fighting the abortion fight, many of us support your ideas. But some of us are gonna keep crawling because there is another hill we'd rather plant our flag on in this election. You know that the MSM/Dems are going to attack us no matter what.  They will find any small thing and attempt to blow it out of proportion into an attack.  And if they can't find something then they'll just go ahead and lie about it.

And with that being said, and knowing that you don't go and fucking tee the ball up for them.

And if you're  making a statement that can pretty easily be turned into a claim of "If you got pregnant from a rape then you weren't really raped,"  you've done a lot more than just teeing it up for them.

430 the "majority of the party" is anti-abortion...and the candidates will continue to be unless they want to lose a lot of enthusiasm from the grassroots. the whole "imposing their views" has always struck me as a false neutrality. normal Democratic voters might not particularly like abortion, but when their elected officials don't support any restrictions whatsoever on it, and view funding it as a basic human right, that's not neutrality, that's saying it's pretty much OK.

Once again, I am definitely for replacing Akin. I am not for, everyone has to be comfortable with your pragmatism on the issue or they are stupid. If you can't handle that level of pragmatism however, since it is the politically salable one, you had better be dang well prepared on the subject before you take media invetations to comment on it. Akin didn't. That makes him two things. Incompetent as a candidate, and spoiled goods for this election thanks to his big fat mouth. If Akin made an ignorant statement about the calculation of the prime rate, or how a bill technically is written up and voted out of a committee, or how "scoring" works, I might be more inclined to your point of view.

But he spouted off on perhaps the most hot-button, divisive issue there is.  He gave his opponents tons of material to use against him and thereby avoid talking about their record.  He was not merely ignorant on the issue of legitimate/illegitimate rape; he wasn't merely ignorant on the body's magical ability to thwart pregnancy in "real" rape; he didn't merely misspeak.  He is an idiot.

Or say you're doing a job, and you make a mistake at the job. Maybe a major one, that costs money. Should you be instantly fired, and mocked incessantly for it?
I'm just curious because that seems to be the standard for a politician in some other state we know nothing about and have never met. Its as if we think politicians must be super human and if they make a mistake pay the highest price possible, mostly because it makes us look bad (we think).

@490.  Once again, I am in full agreement with Mike on this.  He says it better than I do.  Akin deliberately and clumsily walked himself into an issue that he had no business walking himself into.  There is an intellectually hones argument for not allowing a rape exception.  But make it when it needs to be made.  Right now it did not need to be made.  And at least make sure you say at the beginning,  in the middle, and  in the end that it is an extremely tough decision, but I truly believe that all life is precious.  And never use the term "legitimate rape."

This is my problem with this kind of discussion. People start flinging bombs all over the place.
I meant to say I have no problem with either of those things, I just stated they aren't as bad as people are screaming about and that dogs do, in fact, do worse to each other in the wild.
But hey, here it comes in a discussion on some other topic, and a disagreement and things have to get totally twisted out of any rational relationship to what was said before.
For what? Because you dislike a politician? Why does that have to end up some fistfight? This is the kind of thing that keeps libertarians from ever being a serious political force, because they get into massive fights over whether pot should be legalized, or should be legalized then regulated and taxed. Serious screaming matches that end friendships.
Seriously? This is where we want to go?

In this noxious position, the key to success must be kept in mind at all times.  RETALIATE and get attention off you.  Put it back where it belongs - on the enemy and his shortcomings.  The Dems do this every time and somehow we still can't learn from it.  Sheesh.

The dude should own up to his gaffe, and issue a clarification.  Then, immediately attack.  Show that the whole issue was cooked up to divert attention from "XYZ" issue that the other guy is weak on.  Attack - always attack.

And if you are unable to find anything about a Dem to bash, then you're stupid and should get out of the race immediately.  They are scum - all of them are easily attacked because they're bad people.  The do and say bad things.  Hit them, and hit them hard.

The difference is we are on a blog with neat socks.  We screw up the reciprocal mutants at Kos get bothered.  The situation is a little different in the big leagues.  The difference is not fair but not being fair is not a magic suit of armor.

The MSM is in the most open collusion with the democrats it has been since Watergate.  The NEA has indoctrinated 2 generations of voters in Planned Parenthood as BASELINE moral position.  The democrats are allowed to run as pro-life(still voting aboriton if needed) to pro-choice like Barry and receive NO media pressure to do any explaining.

We can try to stop Obama or nobly expose media bias that has been very obvious for 16 years now at least.  The "expose" play carries with it the risk that Barry hides his "work" as SCOAMF.  Then the whole thing devolves to 2008 with slightly well no a lot less stupid at the top of our ticket.

The media will unashamedly speak of nothing but taxes and magic anti-rape uterine walls 'til the cows come home.

>>I wonder how many times people here have said something dumb or mistaken, and go 'dang that was stupid' later.

All of us.  But most of us do not have years and years of experience speaking with reporters on broadcast television, knowing that you're going to be asked difficult, loaded questions and realizing, based on experience, that you must be measured and careful in your answers.

And most of the time, when we say something stupid, we recognize it almost immediately and try to correct it.  We heard not a peep from Akin until he was getting hammered from all sides and the f*cking top of the ticket had to call his ass out.

And if you listened to his "explanation" on Hannity, you are likely dumber for having heard it.  He wanted to pretend it never happened and would just go away.  I have read your comments wherein you speculate what he was trying to say or what he meant.  He would have been better served to read your comments before going on the air.  He obviously didn't.

581 @536.  I think you are looking at this wrong.  Certain gaffes are treated differently.  And the same gaffe can be treated differently given the circumstances it was uttered.  If this was simply a gaffe in the run up to a special election, then I think it would be enough for him to state that he mispoke and move on, especially when he would likely win.  But that is not the case.  If Akin had only said that he doesn't think their should be an exception for rape, then even though it is not politically popular, I think there would be less outcry  or at least less justification for his removal.  But once again, he expressed his minority opinion in such a dubm manner at a time it didn't need to be discussed, that it makes you question whether he should serve or not.  Further, it has the potential to seriously damage the electoral prospects of the top of the ticket.  I don't think his political career is over.  And I think he is just negotiating his exit.

We're not talking about casual water cooler chat or dinner table conversation here.

We're talking about a guy who is in a contest for a crucially important Senate seat in a crucially important election year, who allows his interviewer to switch him off the main track into a hot-button side issue, and who then pops off with a meandering response which seems to indicate he's profoundly ignorant of how basic human reproductive biology works, as well as being dismissive of some rapes as being not "legitimate" ones, whatever the hell that means.

Words fail me in describing how amateurish and unacceptable that is.

Akin needs to have his financial oxygen cut off at once. The GOP needs to wash its hands of him, disavow his loopy comment, cast him into the outer darkness, and get an unstained contender into the race against McCaskill. Right away.

Apparently the wacky biological views come from a group called Physicians for Life, who says: "Finally, factor in what is certainly one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that's psychic trauma...To get and stay pregnant a woman's body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a part of the brain that is easily influenced by emotions. There's no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, and implantation."

607 Posted by: capechik at August 20, 2012 04:15 PM (nMZz6) Even if this is true, and that's a big if, it doesn't help the cases where you actually do have a pregnant rape victim. I mean, they exist. Posted by: jeremiah Gosh Darn Amerikkka Wright at August 20, 2012 01:12 PM (ovpNn)

614 no argument that politically-speaking this was a huge blunder and a complete misstatement.

the quote: if itÂ’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
probably meant: pregnancy from criminal rape is rare and full-term pregnancy even rarer
msm interpretation: only non-rapes result in pregnancy
what he would have had to say to make that inference: no rape will ever result in pregnancy

the word "try" does mean something.

also, found that pregnancy from rape is pretty rare - 5% of rapes, and full-term pregnancy even rarer.  i believe it was that icon of conservatism larry tribe who opined that rape (date rape specifically, if i remember) was the most misreported crime in america.  i agree with what some have said here that there is incentive on the woman's part to call something rape that wasn't rape so i think that the "legitimate" or "criminal" rape statistics are distorted by this incentive.

Posted by: matt foley at August 20, 2012 01:15 PM (2WDMC)

615 There really are two issues behind what he said.  One is the whole "...the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down...," which is absurdly incorrect science and, if it's following from the Physicians for Life statement (see Comment 615), is some of the most sick "blaming the victim" I've ever seen.  They claim that if the woman is sufficiently emotionally traumatized, her hormones will prevent her from getting pregnant?  So, what's the implication if she DOES get pregnant?  She wasn't traumatized by the attack?  That's severely fucked up.  No getting around or defending him/them on that one.

Posted by: capechik at August 20, 2012 01:32 PM (nMZz6)

616 The other issue, that you're hearing more about on the left, is the notion of "legitimate rape." It's the reason Obama said, "Rape is rape." The left is harkening back to some of the bills introduced earlier to stop taxpayer funding of abortion. If you remember, they were shouted down from including language about exempting "forcible rape."

There are some very valid questions that get buried when morons like Akin make foolish statements like he did. Like... If you are saying there is no taxpayer funding for abortion, except in cases of rape, does that include statutory rape? So any teenage girl under the age of consent (which varies a LOT from place to place) is covered, even if there was no force? Does it cover a pregnancy resulting from rape at any stage of the pregnancy--like a late-term abortion of a viable baby that would otherwise be illegal can get paid for legally with tax dollars if the girl says she really didn't want to but she passed out?  Thanks to this Akin hoopla and his "magical female body off-button" nonsense, it's gonna be a long time before can touch those issues without being glued to him.

618 I voted for Aiken in the primary, because I believed that he represented most of my goals for the country. The remarks that he stated were so unreal, that I could never vote for him. I have been a life long republican. Anyone with no knowledge of female anatomy in 2012 cannot represent in the senate. You have lost my vote Todd Aiken Drop Out!
