FRIDAY!!!!!!

The U.S. made a major bust of one of the world's largest file-sharing sites yesterday, Mega Upload. The site was shut down and arrests were made . . . in New Zealand. The grand jury indictment makes interesting reading (PDF). In response, Anonymous crashed the DOJ webpage for about five minutes last night.

"Occupy Courts" will attempt to disrupt federal courthouses across the country today, as libtards protest the second anniversary of the Citizens United decision, which held that people do not give up their right to free speech when they exercise their right to free association.

Good Morning Morons, its FRIDAY, January 20th, 2012. On this day in 1801, through a conspiracy with John Adams later known as Marbury v Madison, John Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court as chief justice. On this date in 1981 Saint Reagan assumed office and became the oldest President to every take office. And today is Bill “Tingles” MaherÂ’s birthday, he is 56.  On to the news.

Simply amazing! Piss Dodd who has become a lobbyist for Hollywood now is threatening to cut off bribes to Obama unless SOPA is restored.

Hollywood's top lobbyist and former Sen. Chris Dodd is threatening to cut off campaign funds to President Obama's re-election effort because of anger over the White House appearing to side with tech companies in a bitter fight over anti-piracy legislation.

Why isnÂ’t this crooked SOB in jail?  I know just rhetorical.

CYBER WAR: Feds SHUT DOWN file-sharing website; No trial, no due process...

US government hits Megaupload with mega piracy indictment

This is from Drudge and his headline link. I posted on this yesterday with a note that there was no indication of a court order for this shutdown (different article). This article is from The Guardian. They do not mention it either one way or another but Drudge indicates that there has been nothing from the courts other than in indictment by a Grand Jury. I should think that there should be at least an order from a judge in order to provide “due process”.  Federal Grand Juries have become notoriously unreliable in the past decades.

The average citizen now completely trusts the DOJ which is insane. This is the major thing that I was against in SOPA because it allowed the government to shutdown a site strickly based on a report from anonymous assholes. Here at least they got there cheese sandwich from a Grand Jury.  But it also shows you one major thing, they do not need SOPA or PIPA and more power. They already pretty much do any damn thing they want.

Drudge also has this headline link to a poll:

WHO WON CHARLESTON DEBATE?

Vote if you like, I didn’t watch the debate. My position is “who cares”?

<rant on>

We are left with zip dog shit for candidates. Year after year after year under the stagnated BS Republican Party primary rules we get stuck with shitty candidates. The primaries are preloaded with almost ALL blue States all the way up to the damn Super Tuesday date. This is why we get stuck with lackluster, its my turn “moderates”. Yet there are some here who keep saying this is all wingnut “conspiracy theory”. I throw the bullshit flag on that. Once is OK, twice may be a coincidence, three times is enemy action. Decades worth is Party design.

We are now left with Mutt Romney who they are still saying is the designated winner although he has only won one Primary in virtually his own home State and it appears he will NOT win SC despite all the MFM hoopala. He hasnÂ’t got a conservative bone in his body. He is not electable because he will split the Party and likely result in a third Party run. The base hates him yet if he does win it will be the same damn way McShitty won. A plurality of about 30%.

Then there is Eye of Newt. More baggage than an overloaded airport train headed for a wide body 747. He has a couple of finger bones that may be conservative.

Coming up third will probably be Santorum (at least in SC). He is arguably more conservative than Gingrich (maybe) but he so alienated his own State so bad he was routed in his last election attempt. His stress on anti-gay and on social con issues is so hard that he is virtually unelectable in any tight State like VA. The same way Mutt will cause conservatives to stay at home, he will cause some fiscal cons who donÂ’t give a shit for social ideas to stay at home. If he would keep his mouth shut on this score he would be a lot better off. Swing into that shit AFTER the election dumb ass. Do like the Dems do, run to the center and then after election go hard right social con.

Fourth is Crazy Racist Uncle. Not a chance of getting elected anywhere but he has a following of loud and obnoxious pot heads and skin heads.

This is what our Republican Party primary rules has given us. This and endless fucking bullshit debates hosted by the MFM designed not to allow the candidates to debate, but to pose “gotcha” questions, stir up controversy for ratings, and just generally damage the Republican party. Hell, the ONLY reason Newt has climbed out of the gutter is by attacking the debate assholes. Is this how we want to pick candidates; seriously?

All you Mutt-Mashers can bitch about this all you want, but I am about fed up with the Republican Party. They are not just the Party of Stupid, they are the Party of semi-Democrats. I am about to agree with Glenn Beck, there is not much difference between them but degree of how far left they want to go. Whether it is big government socialism for the Republicans or bigger government communism for the Democrats. Either damn way we are going off the cliff.

Well thatÂ’s it for this morning Morons.  No new polls since Ras which has Newt in a slight lead. Which means it is essentially a dead heat. But shit, since these initial proportional primaries with half-delegates donÂ’t mean anything but PR anyway, if Newt takes it by 1 point he can say he won. That means Mutt has only won one primary in a “home State” and maybe the MFM and the Mutt-Munchies will STFU about “inevitability” and “electability”.

I also had a link from The Hill about Newt giving the FYNQ to reporters outside the debate. But no matter what I did Pixy would not take it. If you like head over to The Hill and read it.

Well ranted, Vic, and I think it summarizes how more and more of us feel about the situation.  Especially the deplorable primary system, wherein the game is rigged up front to weed out more capable conservatives.  It feels like all the grown ups have left the room.  When I was a kid you had all kinds of genuinely conservative minds out there, and people in government who, despite some flaws, could be taken seriously.  Now the whole damn structure looks like a friggin' clown car.  It's like we used up all the talent during the Cold War, and once that was over they all retired back to the ranch or whatever and left the noobs to take over.

I think the Cold War, in many ways, was what helped keep America going.  It forced us to be serious.  What happened as soon as the cold war was over?  Compassionate Conservatism, followed by f-ing Clinton.  And it's all been down hill from there.

If I could I'd make a deal with Putin - bring back Russian Imperialism, and split the world back up into zones.  The Ruskies can take back all the old 3rd world crap holes they used to dominate, and we'll take the soon-to-be crap holes made up of what are, for the time being, first world nations.  Let all the lesser nations worry about getting nuked, or taken over, or having their governments destabilized/overthrown.  Let Americans have a threat to focus on so we can put aside this false sense of security.

Obama's speech drew enthusiastic applause from the 300 or so invited guests and top Disney executives who crowded into a seating area in the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. and filled the sidewalks near the Casey's Corner hot-dog restaurant.

Tourists weren't as lucky. Main Street, the iconic pathway to Cinderella Castle, was closed much of the day to the public. Guests were routed directly to Tomorrowland through a backstage area dressed up with floats and flags, avoiding the site of Obama's speech.

Joan Burke, who was visiting the Magic Kingdom, said she wished she had been able to see the speech. But the event didn't ruin her day.

"We made do," she said. "We got on a lot of rides because there weren't a lot of people here today."

Romney, speaking from South Carolina, said that Obama "has chosen Fantasyland to give this address," adding, "He has been speaking from fantasyland for some time now."

Newt wins in the snark department.

Naturally, the leftist media, who covered up the Clinton affairs and rapes as best they could, are quick to jump on Newt and air his dirty laundry as far and wide as possible.  Well, they already basically got Americans on board with the idea that cheating by politicians is a non-issue that should not be brought up, so it will be a fine thing if Newt gets the nod in spite of, or because of, their harping on the matter.

It is very unfortunate for us that the media is willing to destroy any and all cultural taboos for short term political gain.  Media is doing more to destroy our culture than any other force.

Yeah.

Look, Newt's morality (circa 1990s anyway) is not my morality, but it sounds like Marianne (aka mistress #1/wife #2) left him, then he met Callista and started dating during a six year separation, then Marianne returns to Newt - clearly not out of love but for some convenience reason, I guess - and he doesn't want to break it off with Callista. Color me not shocked.

I am very old-fashioned, but I think most modern people would consider such a long separation to be coupled to the expectation that each of them are dating.

I don't care about Newt's past personal stuff.  He seems to have cleaned up his act and other than that I don't need to or want to know.

Yes, but unless you are propagandizing to complete idiots another essential principle is to be subtle.  The fact that the American press feels that they can dispense with this principle means that they think the public is stupid.  That insults me, and the fact that it's TRUE in many (at least 52%) of cases depresses me.

76 I figured out what Mitt's biggest political liability is, and why the (allegedly non-existent) Establishment is backing him so hard. Mitt just might be the nicest guy ever nominated (if he wins) for President. I am dead serious about this. And the main reason all the supposedly smart people want him nominated is because that would directly contrast to McCain. In other words, they're trying for a re-do of the '08 election. Of course, this isn't '08, because Barack of '12 is not the same candidate. I do honestly believe if Newt were to be nominated, he would win in a landslide. If it's Mitt? He'll squeak by. And then promptly try to be everybody's friend in Washington.

82 80 - Exactly. The R party is afraid everyone thinks they're evil, and so when McCain is nominated he looks like the evil old Nosferatu type vampire. If we nominate Mitt, they hope he'll be viewed like Edward from the Stephanie Meyer novels. All sparkly and stuff, but a vampire nonetheless.

How? You thought McCain was bad just nominate another bitter old man that likes to shot himself in the foot. And worse then that he never blames himself for anything, it's always "everyone is to dumb to understand what he said". Four months of a national campaign with Newt and he'll be lucky to get 40% of the vote.

91 84 - Image-wise, Newt doesn't come off as a bitter old man. He comes off looking like an adult. One who is mean enough to not put up with the nonsense coming from the left and the media (BIRM). This is not 2008. We don't have to worry about looking mean, like we did then. And we could have a nominee who fires back when attacked. But go ahead and make nice, if you think that's best.

Posted by: Mr Pink at January 20, 2012 08:12 AM (FzVXi) i just don't see Gingrich as appealing to the wider electorate, but Zi'll be all in for him if he's the nominee. But really: the OWS crap doesn't bother you? His immigration answers don't give you pause? A huge new federal entitlement of mandatory job training for all unemployment benefits, seemingly made up on the fly, is an OK mandate because it came out of Newt's mouth instead of Mitt's? And I kind of wish some would realize we are ALL screwed if Obama is reelected. The entire poltical paradigm will shift sp far Left, the arguments over which GOP candidate is the purest will seem quaint.

Posted by: CoolCzech at January 20, 2012 04:19 AM (niZvt)

98 Speaking as a supporter of the now-gone Perry,  I have a serious set of questions.

Mitt obviously wants to win.  He has devoted the last 4 years to getting this nomination. He is supported by people like John Bolton.

The question is,  is it not possible that Romney (person who actually did save the Olympics and made millions on investing in companies) actually has a PLAN to win?  That perhaps he has actually ANTICIPATED attacks by the democrats?  That he actually could WIN?

It just doesn't make any sense to me that he would spend all of his money and devote so much time (and his family's) to this if he didn't think he had a good shot.  The man doesn't seem to be delusional.

Posted by: Miss Marple at January 20, 2012 04:19 AM (GoIUi)

99 And besides that WTF do we need to live with a double standard. We need to shove it up their ass just like Newt is doing. And he is getting standup ovations.

He is one who these shitty "debates" actually saved. And he did it by attacking the press.

Agreed on all counts, but remember that there is ample precedent for treating The Newt that way: the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure has been held accountable for nothing. He was anointed with no proof of eligibility or ability.. His record in office has qualified him for a jail cell, yet he is the top banana and will remain so for at least four more years.

(Yeah, that "banana" reference is racist as hell, so I denounce myself.).

The Republican Party should change its name. I suggest it replace its symbol with an image of Gen'l Custer. It is as irrelevant today as the Whig Party.

110 99 - I'm pretty sure we're seeing his plan. This is not coming out of nowhere, he is following the script Nixon ran on in '68. I mean that. People don't remember now, because of everything that happened after, but the R party knew what Nixon's liabilities were, namely, that he wasn't well liked. They ran Nixon as a nice guy who didn't say much of anything about anything. And it worked, more or less. I think Romney would win if he's nominated, but you aren't going to hear any bold plans coming from him. His plan is to stand there and say "hi, I'm Mitt Romney. I'm a nice guy, and I'm not saying Barack Obama isn't, just that I'm nicer."

Newt is, no matter how bad you want this to not be true, the most reliably conservative candidate left in this race. If that's not what you want, so be it. But don't pretend it's not the case.

I think it's a great answer if you want to sound nice and reasonable to the dullards and the amnesty lovers. The reason it's a great answer is because you know it has practically zero chance of passing but you can still get some credit for throwing out the idea in the first place. Basically, it's a politician's answer.

130 I'm thinking about Vic's rant, which I think is dead on correct.

What we need is a way to get the best conservative to be vetted well before the primaries start, so they get to South Carolina unopposed.  Perry made the same mistake Thompson did in 2008 (and Palin would have made if she decided to run).  They got into the game too late, and weren't ready for the energy it takes to do the hard campaigning.  They end up looking weak.

Even Santorum, who by rights should suck at campaigning, got to be pretty good at it after 400 some appearances in Iowa.

Assuming Mitt does get the nomination (which is still the most likely scenario given his national organization), and he wins in November (because Obama is unelectable), it will be very important that a strong conservative be the VP.  We are going to need him or her to be the candidate in 2020 to finish whatever weak sauce work Mitt has done in 8 years to fix the economy.

I think Texas should be the first primary though, and it should be winner take all.  Screw New Hampshire.

All the more reason to get it out NOW so he has plenty of time to say, "Hey, I was just working within the rules as written" and hope that time makes it less of an issue.

It will never be easier or less damaging to deal with it than it is right now.  Well, okay, maybe not "right now" but Monday.

151 141 - I do think Newt is the lesser of two evils here. He's done "conservative" things in his career, and I don't really believe he's committed to any of the silly ideas he throws out there, unlike Mitt, who will die on the hill of enacting a national healthcare policy. In other words, pull Newt to the right. He's likely to come along. Pull on Mitt, and he's shown he will resist, at least on the one issue he's most passionate about.

152 "It's an example of Newt's predilection for showcasing his "unconventional" intellect rather than doing the heavy lifting of actual analysis."

This.

This is my problem with Newt.  He thinks every problem is just one brilliant idea away from being solved, and it doesn't matter what instrument (government or industry) is used to solve it.  I wonder how President Gingrich would have reacted to Gen. Eisenhower telling him that D-Day was going to take a million troops.

153 If you wanted to know why there are so many "damned independents" it's becasue they (the republicans and the democrats) look exactly the same to us.  I've been saying this on here since I came.  No difference, but the letter after their name. To them, it's still all about the money and power.  The only way to exert any power over an election is to be an independent.  In the end, the vote of the independents seem to be the only votes that truly matter.  And that is just sad.

Then don't buy it at all.  But don't steal it.

Look, this is Econ 101.  Either that CD (just that one song) is worth more than 18.50 for you to get to listen to whenever you want, or it's not.  If it's not, then don't buy it.  If it is, then don't whine.

You don't have a right to that music.

And if the "artist" (really?  most "musicians" today are no-talent hacks) only get's 50 cents per album sold... well, they knew that going in.  And considering how easy it is for them to sell 100,000 - 1,000,000 copies of each album, I'm not really crying for them.

There is nothing wrong with a progressive candidate, a one with *ideas* instead of the usual "do nothing and everything will fix itself" candidate? Newt understands that the government is the problem (in fact, articulates that point it better than any pundit), but he understand that the Tea Party is progressive in nature, for the Tea Party demands more than "do nothing" reactionism, it demands tangible fiscal and social change for the better, and change is always progressive, not conservative. Changing the system is always a progressive thing. Even when it means less government.

So calling Newt a "Progressive" is calling him slightly less than a Socialist.

I think you're exactly right. Newt is still around for that very reason. Republicans - the real ones outside of DC - want someone who will stand up and fight and who won't take any shit off the propaganda organ of the DNC, the MSM. There was a piece on PJM this morning comparing him to Grant and all his personal failings, yet managing to be a great general in the Civil War. "Can we spare this man? He fights." It's not the only thing, and it's not everything for sure, but I guarantee you Barky Obama pisses his pants at the thought of having to debate Newt 2 or 3 times, but surely not about debating Romney.

193 The only way for the big music companies to survive is to go to some sort of Public key distribution, where you buy a file with your key. This would also require some sort of stenographic keying for the analog side.

No, they wouldn't survive that- that would make things worse.  It was one of the 'ettes (sorry, I can't remember which one) who went on a tear just the other day about being ticked that the only way to play Skyrim on PC is to have a Steam Account- even though Skyrim is a standalone game otherwise.

The way for them to survive is to make it not worthwhile to steal intellectual property.  Perhaps the best way to do that would be to pay the musicians a reasonable amount, but then not subsidize their lifestyles (one of the reasons musicians only get between 30 cents and $1 per album sold is that the record company often pays for their housing, as well as a variety of other bills).  Reduce their own costs, pass that reduction in costs down to the consumer, and provide less incentive to pirate music.

And, for the government (when people are caught) to give pirates proper due process and then throw them in prison.  So, as EoJ so delicately put it, a violent felon can "login" to their colon.

Since liberals are the only ones who have actually progressed their ideology (in the past 100 years), it is only understandable the public perceives progressivism as liberalism. But it's not. There can be right wing progress, and yes, it can even be pushed by the government. 213 But I have moved away from sauce, and now make my own dry rub. If I do my job, the 'que is juicy and flavorful without needing a sauce.

I do a lot of dry rub, but mostly for chops and stuff like that. My favorite type of BBQ is slow simmered until it is shredded and falling apart. They call it BBQ hash around here. I like to do that and put fresh sauce on it and eat it in hamburger buns.

I like it juicy so that it will run down your chin if you ain't careful.

Damn, making me hungry again.

Very shortly Holder will do the same - he is pushed to the point where he has no other choice.

The DOJ Inspector General report on Fast and Furious is due out in a few days.

Looks like they try to say "Nobody at DOJ knew anything - it was a rogue ATF operation".

The new director of the ATF is trying to blame former director Melson and "Low level operatives out of control".

http://tinyurl.com/8xa5g67

Of course that doesn't explain where the ATF got the millions of dollars to subsidize the sales of the more expensive US weapons so that the Cartels would buy them. Or how they could possibly explain how the Cartels wouldn't realize that it was a sting operation since they weren't paying full price for the guns. How exactly was that money budgeted?

Nor does the ATF out of control explanation cover the problem of inter agency cooperation - nor does it explain why Assistant AG Lanny Brewer didn't bring things to a screeching halt when he was briefed on Fast and Furious.

220 210 - There are arguments out there that would suggest that "intellectual property" is not property at all, and the founding fathers never intended to enshrine the notion that anyone was entitled to control any such thing. So it's sorta one of those pendulums or whatever, to find in the Constitution the concept of treating music and movie content as property. The actual cds and dvds? Sure, but the content? Nope, that's not what the Constitution says, unless you think it's a living document, or something like that.

Sometimes I'll smoke a pork butt for about 12 hours, and then finish it in a low oven. I'll pull the meat, and then drizzle the juices over it in a good homemade hamburger bun. That's good stuff.

By the way, pulled pork will freeze fairly well, especially if you add the juices back.

"Slow simmered?" First smoked and then finished in a pot?

223 There are arguments out there that would suggest that "intellectual property" is not property at all, and the founding fathers never intended to enshrine the notion that anyone was entitled to control any such thing.

Then they're bullshit arguments.  Patent law existed before the United States, and Ben Franklin himself owned several, IIRC.

If I expended my time and effort to create something- from a musical opus, to a formula for a drug, to a saddle- that "something" is mine to dispose of as I choose.  You have no right to it.

And "The Constitution" doesn't say anything about ownership rights at all (beyond preventing unreasonable searches and seizures)- since it's discussing limits on Government, not common law.

224 "Slow simmered?" First smoked and then finished in a pot?

I brown it slightly then slow cook it all day in a mixture of sauce and water. During the last hour I remove the lid and let it boil down until most of the water is gone. Then I mash it up with a potato masher and add fresh sauce. I don't have  smoker.

Ready to eat then. Good stuff.

230 226 - Like I said, I'm not a lawyer, just a simple caveman... Equating a patent to the latest Justin Bieber opus would seem a very far stretch to me. Frankly, if you were going to go down that road, a case could be made that, given how formulaic music and movies are these days, they're "stealing" from each other, and trying to sell it as "intellectual property," when of course it is not even remotely so. All they do is rearrange the notes a little, or put the big lovemaking scene before or after the explosion. If a drug company repackaged and resold pharmaceuticals that way, they'd have lawsuits coming out one end of their wazoo, while Bubba the cellmate was going in the other. The irony, we're up to our earballs in it.

So fucking what?  Most of the musicians don't care; at least the ones that have functioning cortices.  They've been bent over so much by the robber barons at TEH LABELS that they're pretty much happy with the new world order where they can get their product to the market without the fuckheads taking their cut and being asshole gatekeepers.  Steve Jobs helped this along with iTunes, which didn't get enough mention when all the jizzmops, including El JEFe, were trying to make hay on his death.

Luling City Market in Luling, Texas has been there for a hundred years.  It faces the railroad tracks, not the road.  You walk into the smokehouse where they cut up smokey mesquite ribs and brisket and put it on butcher paper.  Grab a beer, stay a while.

239 You know what else we could copyright? Football plays! Or any athletic strategy, for that matter. Think about it. Some of these people are geniuses, and the ways they come up with to thwart their opponents are so brilliant, it can take years of studying film (oh! film!!) to figure out how to counteract it. Buddy Ryan's 3/4 defense? Patent it! The Icky Shuffle? Forget tossing a flag. Ali's rope-a-dope? Don't take a point on the scorecard, if somebody copies it, toss them in jail with Bubba the rapist. So if you see Tom Brady clank a football off Gronk's helmet for the Super Bowl win this year, you can say they stole it from Eli Manning. Give 'em at least 10 years, by then Eli won't hold the patent on The Hail Doofus pass (tm).

244 Hollywood never even attempts to shut down actual pirates in the far east who do bit by bit copies of DVDs and Blu Rays.

Hollywood is not concerned with their theft.

What they are concerned about is that very soon you will be able to produce a Hollywood Block Buster level movie and they won't be able to stop you from doing it.

Hollywood is all about throwing technological stumbling blocks in your way to keep you from being a serious movie producer. For example; you can get the full resolution of digital movie cameras through an HDMI connector - but only at 1080 60i not at 1080P 24, you can only get 1080P 24 compressed from either the SD card or tape. It is Hollywood who controls the HDMI spec.

Today anyone with access to a quiet enough room to do a recording in and a few thousand dollars - can produce a CD every bit as good as the record companies can make. Hollywood sees that coming for movies and it terrifies them; the Blair Witch Project put the hand writing on the wall for anyone to see.

Yes, BurtTC.  Everything is made up of atoms. It's like they're trying to patent the atom, when all they're doing is rearranging the SAME atoms in different combinations!

We must move to invalidate all patent and copyright law, because Atoms.

Hopefully you'll recognize how stupid that argument sounds if someone else types it.

I want to know why giving $10 to a politician is a bribe and illegal but giving 10's of thousands of dollars to people to vote for said politicians is not illegal? Sosical Security for those that have not paid into it, Welfare, the Alternative Income Tax Credit, ... none of these people should be allowed to vote dammit! If this were the law, think of how much money we would save since most of what politicians do is based on bribery to get folks to vote for them again. My God if Democrats alone could not buy votes with their schemes to keep the poor dependent on the government we would be a wealthy country and again and all those poor people would be working.
