Happy Monday. Some news to get you started:

First up, the Supreme Court will hear argument today over Texas' new voting maps. Texas had to get judicial or administrative pre-clearance for the maps because it is covered under the Voting Rights Act, which presumes that certain locations will be racist when making changes to voting.

An Iranian court has sentenced an American to death for espionage. They're claiming he works for the CIA.

Soldiers at Lewis-McChord are on lockdown after "sensitive" military equipment goes missing over the holidays. "They'll be on base until the items are found."

Australian woman on an "adventure holiday" in Zambia survives swim through crocodile-infested waters with her feet tied together after her bungee cord snaps and drops her in Victoria Falls. She paid £80 for the privilege.

1 Is it racist to ask for ID when you need to get into a DoJ building to file a voting rights infringement?

2 If you are white, there can be no "voting rights infringement", by definition.  If not, then of course it's racist!

Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday January 9, 2012. It is Plough Monday which signals the start of the agricultural year and return to the fields after the holiday festivities, so back on your heads Morons. On this day in 1905 the Russian revolution started when Russian troops fired on petitioners to the Czar.

Note: Anyone who wants and update on all the mudslinging in NH this weekend should just got to The Hill. The entire paper today is dedicated to that.  Also if you like Mutt go watch F&F. Greta calling for Romney to team up with Christie for “ying and yang”. LOL, this woman is totally political deaf. IOW she is dumber than a bag of hammers (with broken handles).

School district officials said teachers who wrote the paper were not trying to offend anyone but were just trying to incorporate history into the math lesson.

Supreme Court to hear case for FCC censorship of indecency

The networks are arguing that they should be treated no differently than the cables because it is the same.  No it is not folks. With cable you “volunteer” to bring programming into your home and you pay for it. You have chosen to purchase what ever the cable throws up at you and your children. With the networks people receive it over the air and you have no choice short of turning the TV off and getting rid of it.

I hate the idea of censorship but we do need to limit the impact of “coarsening” programming on small children. If I am not mistaken the FCC requires this type of programming to be held until after 10 pm and the courts have upheld that in the past. I have no problem with that. Personally though if I had small children in my house now, once Spongebob was over in the afternoon the TV would go off period and the books would come out.  Teach your kids how to read, not watch TV.

Romney's lead shrinking in NH overnight polls.

Gee why is it that polls always tighten up just before the election? Could it be that pollsters have to give up their ax grinding or look like idiots?  Anyway, NH is a MUST for Romney. People talk about Perry and SC well, if Romney doesnÂ’t win NH by a significant margin then that is a signal that he is in trouble. It is a blue State and he is a favorite son there.

And finally, the big game is tonight!

Vegas is calling for Alabama by 1.5 points. Of course, they called for Arkansas by 1.5 points yesterday as well and they lost by 18 points.  I swear I have been following these Vegas odds for a while now and they NEVER get it right. The bookies there have to be losing their ass if this is the “real” line.

The bad thing is the SOBs are holding the game until 08:30 meaning kick-off will be at 9 pm. Well, I guess they have to give the West coast Morons a chance to see it at a reasonable time.

20 Gabe that case for TX redistricting came about because the asshole Democrats went judge shopping in a civil suit on the redistricting. They got a Democrat judge to write a Democrat gerrymandered map despite the fact that the Republicans controlled the Legislature.

Yeah, baby, I'll take those odds, even though they had the Broncos as a nine-point underdog yesterday.

Tonight's game will probably be another low-scoring, defensive affair, guaranteed to bore the shiite out of anybody who isn't a die-hard SEC fan or steeped in Bear-Ball (like me).

I will be wearing one of my Alabama shirts to work today, openly defying the office dress code as only I can do it. Saw a middle-aged couple in the grocery store yesterday, the wife had a big, crimson 'Bama scarf on, she gave me a thumbs-up when she saw my National Championship T-shirt.

China rejects linking trade and Iranian nukes ahead of Geithner visit to lobby for sanctions

A top Chinese diplomat on Monday rejected linking IranÂ’s nuclear program to trade, adding to tensions with Washington on the eve of a visit by U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to seek support for sanctions on TehranÂ’s oil industry.

A deputy foreign minister, Cui Tiankai, said ChinaÂ’s trade with Iran, an important oil supplier, has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear program.

Â…Â…Â…Â….

Maybe we should send Huntsman instead..

Â…Â…Â…Â….

Maybe we should send Huntsman instead..

Romney had it right on Saturday night when he talked about being tough with the Chinese.  Everyone seems to have forgotten that trade involves a certain amount of dickering.  China has a lot more to lose in a trade war with us.. we should be using that as a leverage against them on monetary policy and their influence on Iran.

But, the JEF we have running the show doesn't get that.. it was evident his first month in office when he gave up the missile defense shield and asked for nothing in return!

56 So that's it then. Game over.

NO not completely although it is damn close to being over. There is the 10% factor. There is an old saw that says that 10% of the population actually controls the direction of the country. These are the people who take an active part in politics and buisness.

Most of them are the wealthy plutocrats who run the businesses and who run the political Parties. But some of that 10% is people like us. When the plutocrats get too far out of line once and a while the people like us rise up on their hind legs and raise hell.

This is what scared the SOBs so bad about the Tea party movement and why they have gone to such great links to marginalize it (and that is BOTH Parties).

And in the end, if people get too damn pissed we get more than "marching" in the streets. During the first 100 years there were quite a few "rebellions" when the plutocrats pushing the American System got too far out of hand.

I'd agree with you to a point, but...you have to have shows/movies accurately rated for the V-Chip/channel lockout things to do you much good. The wife and I rented and watched Cowboys and Aliens last night (we both thoroughly enjoyed it, btw), which was rated PG-13. It had more blood and gore and violence in it than they'd have dreamed allowing in a PG-13 movie only a few years ago. We've seen other PG-13 shows/movies with not nearly as much...the same can be said for sexual content, language, etc. Point being, it's hard to know what you're locking out (and not locking out) unless the parent has time to screen every single thing the kids watch. All that said, I still don't want the government with any more power than it has already, so no thanks on censoring broadcast TV for me either.

60 50 - I know this is a big deal to you, but you know my problem with making a fight out of this one thing? I'm not sure the President is wrong! That's right, I guess I'm another person who doesn't care about the Constitution. The thing is though, Presidents have been doing recess appointments forever. So the Republicans came up with a clever way to NOT go on recess during the holiday recess period. Fine, they can do that if they want. The end result though, is that this is not a constitutional crisis, but another example of party bickering! And if the courts get involved, someone will call it, one way or the other. It's a technical issue, regarding Senate rules. That's all it is, and when it gets resolved, the tool will be used by Republican Administrations and/or by Democrat controlled Congress to thwart the President. So in the end, this is how the sausage gets made. It ain't pretty, but we already knew that.

Most people, thoughout time, have been concerned about the things in their immediate lives that directly impact them, with little concern for anything beyond that.  To expect things would be otherwise here is a bit unrealistic.  That's why universal suffrage has always been, and always will be, a bad idea.  Most folk want to live their lives and be left alone, with the status quo in tact.  The lazy ones are always looking for some way for others to relieve them of responsibility.  Frankly, if a military junta were to sieze power and suspend elections, only a fraction of the population would care - so long as daily life was not disrupted.

If the vote were still restricted to male property owners the nation would a lot better off.  That way the people making political decisions care about property rights, keeping taxes low, and stability/security.  Instead we just have a collections of pigs trying to shove their way to the trough.

This is one of those few things I believe is a correct use of regulation.  When radio first came into being over 100 years ago, it became apparent very quickly that without some regulation of the limited frequencies, it would be chaos.  And since radio waves do not stop at state borders, it was a perfectly legitimate role for the feds to step in and "license" those frequencies.

It'll get resolved eventually. Either the Congress can't do what it's doing, or the Administration can't do what it's doing, and the courts will decide which. Separation of powers and each branch stepping outside the bounds of those separations have been going on since the beginning. That's why the founders built the system they did.

And most of what they do "know" is wrong. All according to plan re: the long march through the institutions. I taught high school level US History (post-Civil War) for 3 years in the early '90s. The kids who got to me had all already had (in theory) a year of American Government and a year of pre-Civil War US History. Did more than a handful in each succeeding class have a clue about anything related to those 2 subjects? Nope. I spent the first month of each school year doing the causes of Civil War and then the war itself because the teachers doing US History I never came close to getting to that (being up to 1800 at the end of the school year was a "good year" I was told). And, I think it's a safe bet that things haven't gotten better since I got out of teaching.

No, the country doesn't know jack about what it was founded on, and we're getting more ignorant with each and every passing day (as far as kids in public schools are concerned anyway).

The SCOTUS can't even read or understand the plain language of the Constitution, look at how they ruled that there is such a thing as "anchor babies" in clear contradiction of the 14th Amendment.

The Supreme Court has never ruled on "anchor babies." And, in any case, there is no such thing as an anchor baby, at least not the way that conservative paranoiacs believe. Children cannot petition for parents to adjust status until they are 21 years old. Cancellation of removal is limited by law to only 4000 cancellations per year and only when the alien applicant meets a high burden to demonstrate harm to the child above and beyond that of mere removal. We remove aliens with U.S. citizen children all the time.

OK.  Should I call my own hard-left Obama loving congress criters (who are themselves totalitarians of the worst sort), or the limp-wrist pseudo-Republicans who have never seen a hill worth dying on?  The end began in 1920, maybe earlier.  There's no saving it now - just delaying the final crash and burn.  For that, we have the party primaries and the general elections.  Those are the best delaying tools we have - to put in resisters.

The libtards passed obastard's death-care with full knowledge that most people feared/hated it.  They passed it not even knowing what was in it, in part just to rub our noses in the fact that they had the power.  They found ways that skirted the edge of legality and totally ignored tradition to accomplish it.  What this illustrates is that they don't care about what the public, letg alone a bunch of right-wingers, have to say about anything.

Well, I guess you could give this school system points for having all those subjects still in the curriculum at least. The problem there was the people (not) teaching what they were supposed to be teaching (this is the same place that had the Irish national with a green card teaching US History as A History of American Unions in the next classroom over). I got constant crap (mostly from other teachers, btw, way more than from kids or parents) about being "too hard" and "asking too much," and I thought that I was being ridiculously easy compared to the content/expectations in the same courses I took in junior/senior high school in the mid-'70s. And this wasn't  some liberal bastion I was teaching in; it was a small, fairly conservative old mill town in New Hampshire.

If someone were looking for a way to turn the nation around, wrestling control of public schools away from the teachers unions and the feds would be a great place to start.

For a long time I have said that will never happen until the States rise up and totally eliminate "free" public schools from their State Constitution and then kill them all. That is the only way States will be able to get control back.

They can come up with some other plan after that first step but the MUST get it out of the State Constitution. That is the avenue the courts have used to gather control of the schools.

If you want to talk about what brilliant guys the founders were, that's great and generally I agree.  And what I'll point out is that while they had disagreements among them about the morality of slavery and a variety of other issues they knew they could do nothing about politically, I don't recall reading much about them agonizing over the wisdom of women's suffrage.  The US was around, and doing pretty much fine overall, for a good many years before 1920.  And frankly, there are very few areas where, socially and politically, the US has improved since that time.  At best, it was harmless.  At best.

Privatizing (and making it much easier for private schools to operate) as many school districts as possible would help. Making home schooling easier to do, give vouchers so kids could at least move to the better public schools, etc. Problem is, of course, that politicians of both parties are scared to death of teachers unions. In preparation for an afternoon training exercise with early-generation night vision equipment at Ft. Bliss, Texas, we went to a two hour morning class that had the sole purpose of explaining why you donÂ’t take the cover off of the 14” diameter optics during the daylight.

After lunch, there was a one hour refresher course on what you learned that morning – don’t take the cover off in the daylight.

The class then moved to the vehicles in the field and sure as shit, the first thing one guy did was pull the cover off.  With a puff of green smoke, the hugely expensive piece of equipment was toast.

How do we win wars?

Well, it's on:

Novak told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that his top priority as a trustee would be to "pass a resolution annulling Joe Paterno's firing and bring him back into the Penn State family."

Ex-Penn St trustee decries secrecy, demands reform

Penn State's board of trustees is dominated by a few wealthy and well-connected insiders, demands permanent secrecy, silences dissent and is in dire need of reform, according to a scathing critical essay by a retired trustee seeking to return to the board.

The first installment of a three-part, 3,700-word treatise by Ben Novak, a 1965 Penn State graduate who served as an alumni trustee from 1988 to 2000, was published in the Centre Daily Times newspaper on Sunday. Novak paid for the advertising space to publish the series, which was scheduled to continue in the paper's Monday and Tuesday editions.

It's amazingly clear and simple, and if our pols would read it occasionally they would discover that the founders were pretty damned smart.

The liberals have managed to take control of the narrative of the Constitution, and have convinced America that it is simply too dense and archaic for it to be the supreme law of the land.

That might be their greatest success.

136 The liberals have managed to take control of the narrative of the Constitution, and have convinced America that it is simply too dense and archaic for it to be the supreme law of the land.

They're worse than that, and they speak out of both sides of their faces.  On the one hand, it's far too complicated for anyone to understand.  But then, when you point out it's actually very easy to understand, they shift their stance to, "it's too simplistic for today's complex issues."

141 I carry the Declaration and Constitution that the Heritage Foundation prints, about the size of your passport.  I've loaned it to several people in foreign lands, explaining that the Declaration listed why we had to create the Constitution.  They all gave it back with the comment:  "Now I get it".  Most of them were English as a second language but understood plain text when they read it.

142 Vic - The point about betting lines is not to accurately predict the outcome, it is to gauge the mood of the bettors and end up with an even 50-50 split on the amount of money bet on each team.

It's all about figuring out what people think about the teams, not figuring out who is really a better team.  Bookies make their money off the transaction fees, and they don't want to end up with a large exposure.

144 "Personally though if I had small children in my house now, once Spongebob was over in the afternoon the TV would go off period and the books would come out.  Teach your kids how to read, not watch TV." This is why what tv I let the kiddies watch is either on DVD or Netflix. And honestly, most of the family friendly programming on right now, cartoons included, is NOT actually family friendly. Both Nickelodeon channels are full of PC bull crap cartoons that scream at you for a full 25 minutes. All the live actions kids programming features girls dressed like sluts and boys in full hipster regalia who all know better than their parents, who are all fucking doofuses and imbeciles. And don't even get me started on the so-called Family Channel. As far as schooling goes, I can now say from experience that the few vouchers available in Florida are a big pile of crap. They give you a pittance and then insist that the school that takes the voucher do the same exact shit that the public schools do or they yank the money. So what the fuck was the point of me getting a voucher to start with? We won't be able to afford to send our son to parochial school again next year so we're just going to side step the whole shebang and home school. That way we have some control over what goes into his noggin. Oh, and TEBOW!

145 I've been wondering why the Repubs have such sorry candidates, but then I realized its not so much the candidates as the fact that the conservative coalition (fiscal, social, foreign policy) has fallen apart. Bush was able to hold it together enough to win reelection, but then proceeded to rip everything apart (out of control spending, amnesty, letting Iraq fall apart after invading). The Dems, however, are united around their common goals: loot the Treasury of every nickel and reducing American prestige around the globe.

I think it's one of those things where our view of the whole is influenced by all the bad news (and thus interesting news) about negative particulars.  The nicer places probably don't have many juicy new stories coming out of them, whereas the portions that ARE hell holes are all you ever hear about.

And those are some pretty bad hell holes, if the stories are true.  Mostly thanks to either the Muz or the Commies.

If the vote were still restricted to male property owners the nation would a lot better off.  That way the people making political decisions care about property rights, keeping taxes low, and stability/security.  Instead we just have a collections of pigs trying to shove their way to the trough.

I understand the irritation this idea causes - and the horse has left the barn and only a fool would run for office on removing the suffrage.  But step back and think about it objectively.  It's hard enough to get males to, with some consistency, use their logic rather than their feelings, to inform their decisions.  Ignoring yourself, think about the women you know.  Personal experience, plus more than 1 study, make it clear that women base most decisions, especially those involving some measure of abstraction (as most political issues do) on feelings rather than logic/research.  They're also prone to do-gooding as a result.  Look at the charts of federal spending before and after 1920.  Spending goes from a slow, gradual increase to something that looks closer to vertical.  I don't think this is pure coincidence.  Consider prohibition - largely the product of the Women's Christian Temperance Movement (which was neither temperate nor christian).  That was accomlished through sheer nagging even before women had the suffrage!

However - I will say that I think the damage would be far less if the vote was at least restricted to property owners, male or female, and I'd also extend it to vets, of course.

Regarding blacks (or any other specific race) I think that the inherent differences are not dramatic enough to warrant taking any kind of action.  Whereas the differences between the sexes are stark and quantifiable, and appear to defy cultural and ethnic divides.

166 Did I mention that att land line service SUCKS.

I have two land lines, why, I have no clue.  One has been constantly out of service and in service for two months.  They have been to my house three times, never inside the house and have billed me three times for repair work they never did. They are coming out again, today, to try and fix it.

I have been on the line to att repair for two hours, they finally agree to remove the charges and transferred me to a customer service rep that was to remove the charges, after a half an hour a nice lady picked up, she is in NV. I am in NC, so she can not remove the charges, go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Enough of this shit.  I picked the wrong week to quit doing glue.
