Happy Friday!

Mitt Romney has taken the lead in RCP's electoral vote count. Because of President Obama's losses, namely Florida and North Carolina, RCP has it 206 EVs for Romney, 201 for Obama, and 131 toss-ups.

There's a pretty sad effort to rally Democrats in this CNBC piece: "at least Obama still has Iowa and Wisconsin." I think the only thing that need be said in reply is, "SOON."

The Department of Homeland Security IG is saying that the Secret Service Director misled Congress when he testified about the prostitution scandal. But we already sorta knew that the misbehavior was cultural, no?

The weekly ad spending totals are out for this week. I'm told if you do the math (and, really, why the hell don't they have a summary page or something?) it comes to $62m spent in total this week. Obama and Democratic groups spent $25.5m. Romney and GOP groups spent $36.5m.

12 An observation: Think back to the primary season. And the fact that Mitt was being forced on us by the establishment. More than that, I distinctly recall that when it was all over by the shouting (May, June), Axelrod was champing at the bit that Mitt would go up against the G-d (who bleeds). Every line of attack they had on him has utterly failed. Now we are left with binders and Big Bird. Good times, good times indeed.

23 The Obama camp underestimated Romney.

I underestimated Romney.  I was concerned that he wouldn't really "get it" and would go all RINO.  He may want to be a RINO, but I think he's come to understand that he can't be a RINO and have the Republic survive, so he'll be the president the nation needs instead.

24 "Technical reasons"= They didn't leave out California this time.

Posted by: VW Zao at October 19, 2012 03:07 AM (vWZa0)

25 Florida and North Carolina indeed are done deals. Stick forks in 'em. Ohio remains the lynchpin of the entire election, which is one of the reasons the recent media polls for Ohio have been even more skewed to get the result they want. But the reality -- and you can look back over decades of actual results to confirm this -- is that Republicans don't receive less in Ohio than what they receive in the national popular vote. The Ohio total either matches or exceeds the national vote total. Incumbent. Non-incumbent. Good economy. Bad economy. Doesn't matter. End of story. So if Romney is ahead in the national vote -- and obviously given the likes of Gallup, Rasmussen, etc. he is -- then he's ahead in Ohio. Regardless what the media says. VA remains a concern only because of its odd demographics. But all signs are that Romney there is ahead. Obviously all the McCain states from '08 plus IN are dead solid locks. So Romney is in good shape. He'll need to finish the deal in OH and VA and then he'll need to win one more state. NH, IA, CO, NV and WI are the primary candidates. If conservatives there finally clue in, instead of getting in touch with their inner irrational malcontents, then this long nightmare of an ordeal should come to an end. But not without a ghastly fight from the Dem-media complex. They won't go quietly into the night.

What happened to the story that a WH official was involved in the Cartagena hokker scandal?

<The acting inspector general, Charles K. Edwards, said the employee "may have had contact with foreign nationals" and "may have been affiliated with the White House advance operation," according to a letter to lawmakers obtained by the AP. Edwards cited as evidence a hotel registry obtained by his investigators.

Edwards acknowledged that his investigators did not pursue information about the activities of the White House employee, who was not identified, or the actions of another U.S. military employee, because his report was intended to focus solely on employees at the Homeland Security Department. Edwards said his office "did not conduct any additional investigation into this finding and has made no determination related to these individuals because they are not DHS personnel.">

As always, I wish him a long life.  So he can see every socialist program torn down, and every conservative program he mocked succeed.  I want him to see the USA continue to be the leading nation in the world and grow in stature.  I want him to see our people enjoying freedom and prosperity without government intervention and interference.  I want him to see nations that adopt our principles succeed and their people grow rich as they enjoy Freedom.

Good morning, ‘rons  and ‘ronettes.  No Hollywood story as such today, just a few random observations about one of the HordeÂ’s favorite subjects (no, not longbows.  Sex).

Whether the hothouse atmosphere of a movie set encourages sexual activity or whether highly sexed people are drawn to acting is one of those chicken-and-egg questions.  Suffice it to say that acting has always been seen as a rather sexually shady profession; one needs only remember Dr. JohnsonÂ’s lament, ”IÂ’ll come no more behind your scenes, David, for the white bosoms and stockings of your actresses excite me.”

Hollywood has always had a reputation as a sexual playground.  Even as early as 1915, fan magazines printed articles alternately insisting that movie studios were all business and that young, desperate women were juicy prey for established actors.  The appetites of stars were open secrets to both those in the business and fans in the know, from ChaplinÂ’s lech for barely pubescent (and, sometimes, pre-teen pink) girls to Alla NazimovaÂ’s appetite for soft female flesh.

The droit du seigneur of directors, producers and moguls has always been a given, and unless you were physically unappealing, your experience as a starlet depended on which studio you were at.  Daryl Zanuck at Twentieth had a stable of 4.00pm bed toys; at MGM, Louis B. Mayer presumed you knew the ropes and only chased you if you ignored the protocol.*  At Paramount, it was a given that girls with exceptionally pretty feet should do their best to get DeMille to see them.  And then, at Columbia, the crude Harry CohnÂ’s seduction technique consisted of dropping trou and snarling ”Suck it, bitch!”

Men, of course, also had to navigate the casting couch, though they were more prey for agents and directors than producers.  In the 1950Â’s, agent Henry Willson was notorious for bedding -  and then promoting – young, studly actors, changing their names to his idea of masculinity: Tab Hunter, Van Johnson, Rock Hudson.

Once a star, an actorÂ’s sexual tastes were whispered about – was Hepburn really gay?  Were the Gish sisters really incestuous lesbians?  Was Mae West really a drag queen? – but without documentation, itÂ’s hard to know whatÂ’s truth and what is rumor.  My advice to you is to take all stories – especially those from the sordid Hollywood Babylon series – with a large grain of salt.  ThereÂ’s some truth there (Joan Crawford really was a hooker and stag film performer in her early days, and Marilyn Monroe did exclaim ”ThatÂ’s the last cock IÂ’ll ever have to suck!” after signing her Twentieth contract), but also outright silliness (MonroeÂ’s ‘confessionÂ’ to roommate Shelley Winters that the one woman she wanted to seduce was Jacqueline Kennedy).

Well, you get the idea.  And I could go on, but I wonÂ’t (still, feel free to ask me about any actor you can think of and IÂ’ll give you a sex story if I know one).  So let me end with one off the all-time great Hollywood one-liners: itÂ’s credited to any number of funny men, but it really came from the lips of Red Skelton – at the funeral of the despised Columbia head Harry Cohn, an attendee was astonished at the number of people who turned out to witness the internment.  Skelton simply shrugged and said, ”Well, itÂ’s like they always say – give the people what they want to see, and theyÂ’ll come out for it!”

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  IÂ’ll be back on Monday with some thoughts about the great (and some not to great) silent comedians, as well as some suggestions for viewing.

*the fate of actress Esther Ralston, who refused MayerÂ’s advances and saw her career at MGM collapse.

79 Not only does he look very presidential. but he shows another side that most people haven't seen.

That's what's happened over the course of the debates.  They were the inflection point.  When the challenger comes across as more presidential than the incumbent, he (the incumbent) is toast.

I think most folks now look at Romney and already see the president.  They no longer do that with Obama.  He seems small and mean.

162 My Libya question for today:

It is now known there was no mob upset by the video.  There are video tapes from security cameras and both State and intelligence groups confirm this.

So why,  in the New York Times article this morning,  is the guy who is supposed to be the leader of the attack talking about a mob enraged by a video?

Either the NYT is making stuff up,  or the perp had an agreed-upon story and hasn't gotten the word that the video excuse is a non-starter.  I really think this is a big deal.

I'm pretty sure that he just started this gig in 2008 so it's not like he has this awesome track record. If I'm not mistaken he pooh-poohed the 2010 wave and was off on the Wisconsin recall as well.

All I need to know about how this election is going is to look at where the candidates are campaigning and where they aren't. When I see Jugears campaigning in New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, and basically establishing temporary residency in Ohio I know that he's in trouble.

I think Gallup might be very accurate in predicting winners, but it's likely voter model picks up enthusiasm for the winner at a slightly higher level than occurs on election day.

Dave, didn't Jay Cost write a piece not too long ago in which he examined Gallup's historical numbers and showed that they have a tendency to overestimate the Democratic share of the vote? I remember reading the piece and I remember that the subject was Gallup and a general Democratic skew, but I don't remember if it was their likely voter poll or a different one.

do you think the campaigns think Virginia is that fluid?

Virginia is a turnout game.  The enthusiasm for you know who has faded generally, so if Romney's ground game outside of Fairfax, Arlington, Richmond, and Norfolk is as good as it appears to be, VA is a win.  I just can't see Obama ringing up the numbers in Northern Virginia that he did in '08.  The rest of the state is as solidly red as you can make it.

250 Polls, in as far as they have any predictive or descriptive value (which I don't think media polls do), are snapshots. RCP takes snapshots from several different points in time, each of them flawed, and mashes them together to get an "average." While this may suggest that the errors more or less cancel each other out, this is only true if the errors are random in direction and value, but they are not; and only of the polls themselves have value, which is doubtful. What the RCP Average ends up being is a time-retarded snapshot of the conventional wisdom of a bunch of leftist propagandists who hide behind the skirt of statistics to lend themselves an air of credability. The average is less valuable than any of the individual polls in terms of prediction or description of the race, and the component polls are probably worthless themselves. It is the rainwater that collects at the bottom of a trash can-- the refuse of refuse and the garbage of garbage.

252 The takeaway from the Lawrence O'Donnell embarrassment is not that it "reveals" the shopworn media bias insanity. Rather, his words show what drives this bias: envy, pure and simple.

This is why so many in the journalist class lambast wealth, success, and fame (those in entertainment and sports likewise pick like vultures on the flesh of their subjects). These mediocre minds in expensive suits and over-paid gigs have to cover those who are immensely more wealthy and cater to the latter for their livelihoods. Their only revenge is their word processor.

Hence, stories about the poor, ill, and downtrodden are always uplifting and looking for the heart of gold. Coverage of the upper class looks for the sneer and cynicism. It's not that they want to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. It's not politics. It's bitter frustration and jealousy.

265 New Susquehanna Polling and Research results: To: All Media and Interested Parties RE: PA Presidential/US Senate Statewide Poll Results DATE: October 18, 2012 Following is a brief overview of our latest statewide poll conducted in the Keystone State from October 11th – 13th (prior to the 10/16 debate) with 1,376 likely voters. The poll was commissioned on behalf of the Republican State Committee of Pennsylvania, with permission to release its complete findings. Below is a summary of key findings, followed by top line results and an explanation of survey methodology. *GOP Nominee Mitt Romney has taken the lead over Barack Obama in the Keystone State by a 49% to 45% margin, reversing Obama’s 2-point lead in SP&R’s last poll conducted 10/3-10/6. This marks the first time any publicly released poll has shown Romney with a lead. An additional 2% are voting for Libertarian Gary Johnson, with 1% for Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Only 2% remain undecided. ... *Also in the poll, GOP Senate nominee Tom Smith leads Democratic US Senator Bob Casey 48-46, technically within the poll’s 2.64% margin of error. This is perhaps the first poll showing Smith with a lead – representing a 12-point gain from polling this summer while Casey’s support has flat-lined. SP&R was the first to show this race a tossup, with Casey leading only 46-41 in a September poll sponsored by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. http://preview.tinyurl.com/8bbp6ow

you made excellent points; also you may wanna ask him why if it is fair, cap gains on sale of main residence are excluded from tx income - there is a cap, but that is nor relevant at the moment (answer , because if it is not, it will retard the real estate market, that real estate, stocks, bonds are types of assets and if the burden of taxation can retard growth in one,  than it surely will retard the other) ....

336 I hope Romney wins, but as a very wise Moron commented above, this is only the start of the housecleaning. If/when Obama is voted out, I'm pretty sure he's going to position himself as the head of the government in exile, replacing Al Sharpton and the other knuckleheads. I don't think the media will render him irrelevant.

It's so tempting to think, after the exertions of this election are over, that we can go back to our normal lives. This must be especially tempting for the undecideds, the swing voters or the less engaged who feel that once they pull the lever, their duties and efforts as citizens are done. Nope. This means that once this is over, people have to start volunteering to serve on school boards, to attend community board meetings and to remain involved in this process. It took a long time to get in this mess - about two generations. The other side played a long game, working through the schools and the media, the culture and the nonprofits and the foundations...and they aren't afraid to play dirty. (You don't really think D'Souza's affair was revealed by accident, do you?).

Most of the DRs really do care very much about the Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines under their care. The Emergency Medicine/Surgery on the battlefield and then up the ladder and back into the top Military Hospitals in the USA are second to none. And the routine care given to everyday Military is great also. The aim of Military Medicine is to insure that our Fighting men and women are ready and able to serve. Now when you get into some more ancillary medicine ( cancers and such ) you can run into problems.

374 Speaking about his political views, Rasmussen said, "I was brought up loosely as a Republican, but at our family dinner table we talked about the important politics of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. There was no political discussion in my life growing up. I became a Democrat after Richard Nixon and into the Jimmy Carter era and have been an Independent ever since. I spoke today about how the American people were skeptical about politicians—well, I’m more skeptical. I really do see the core issue as the political class versus mainstream voters. I think that is a much bigger gap than Republican, Democrat, conservative, or liberal." 376 You don't work much with computers, do you? Maybe Heather Radish can explain the short version, but it's something that used to give my brain fits. This is not technically correct. "Counting" implies cardinal. Cardinal with computers is done just as cardinal is done in real life. It's the ordinal representations that normally start with zero with computers but one in real life.

I helped train some military medical people...

Like the guy trying to get me to move my leg into the right position for the 17th x-ray he was taking...

Me: If I could move my leg, I wouldn't need x-rays of it.

Him: Blink.

Him: Oh.

Him much nicer and patient after that.

Every time I had to give a blood sample (2 pregnancies while at the military teaching hospital) there were trainees who had just walked in the door. Luckily for everyone, a well trained person always happened over to me, because I would have walked out before letting a newbie practice on me.

Technically, the "1s and 0s" in a computer are neither, they're "On/Off" switches.  So binary 0 = "Off"

Thus, we start with 0 (everything "Off") and count from there.

Simple, really.

(Full disclosure: I'm= enough of a geek that he uses his hands to count binary.  I don't know very many people who realize you can count to 1023 on your hands.)

391 Pay someone $100 in $1 bills and start counting out the money with zero.

Hate to tell you, but you do this all the time, the 0 is just implied.

When you're holding all the money (or before you've started counting), you're sitting at zero.  When you put the first bill in their hand (or on the table, or flip it to show it's been counted, or whatever) the first "bit" flips from 0 to 1 and you say, "One."

All counting starts with zero, because the base assumption is "none."

If you "started" with one, then when you handed them the first bill, you'd have to say, "two."

Go see an Infectious Diseases consultant.

Most other physicians don't know shit about infections and how to treat them.

Let me second that.  Mrs P had a "staph infection" last year that wouldn't clear up.  It wasn't until (thank God) the ID doc saw her that she got rushed to the OR for open heart surgery.  If she hadn't seen him, she'd be dead.

Moral?  Don't fuck around.  See an ID doc stat.

That does explain it. Also why it confused the heck out of me because I 'started' with Fortran and Cobol. Years later, in C -- where the first element of an array was zero -- I had to work around that so that I just took the first six elements of an array for a pick box and didn't refer to them by number. Just kept looping and incrementing the elements until the user found what he wanted.

I never saw the term zeroth, so I learned something new today.

With FORTRAN on s/360, it wasn't just a matter of starting with zero, you also had to make sure you had the right zero (integer math for FORTRAN H was done with one's complement). I've seen tests for zero and negative zero as late as 2001 in open source numerical recipes implementations in other languages.

Boy, was I wrong. I'm sure that by 2016, a Romney administration will have given us plenty to complain about. But it's clear now that the guy is as tough as they come. He is, in fact, the best candidate.

I hope he leads the country the same way.. looking at what has worked and what hasn't worked and adjusting his policies accordingly.

There was an element of "He's down, I'm going to keep him down, and you in the media can't do a damn thing about it" to Mitt's performance.

He really did push the envelope just a bit, and had it not been for the last four years and the behavior of all his minions and backers I might have felt just a bit sorry for Obama.
