Happy Monday.

Politico has new "battleground" tracking. Overall, Romney leads Obama, 49 to 47 percent. But he leads 50-48 in 10 swing states. This one's notable because the same poll hasn't found a Romney lead since May. (May? Wha?) Once again, the trends are in the right direction. There are 15 days left. Will it be enough?

Awww, Microsoft is now a week away from rolling out Windows 8. The major problem: it's such a radical change from previous Windows versions that nobody knows how to use it.

Obama is making a late push for black voters. The campaign really has become a turnout nightmare for Democrats. So much so that Obama has invited Rev. Wright back into the fold.

The NY Times is already signalling that we're at the end of the campaign rally misery and it's time to switch to the door-to-door GOTV misery. Or at least it's over for Democrats...

The NY Post has now discovered the Obama foreign donation scandal. Democrats just don't care.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, October 22, 2012.  On this day in 1962 JFK announced a naval blockade of Cuba due to the presence of Soviet missiles. I remember that day well.  A lot of folks were mighty nervous.

16 It's amazing how people still revere JFK as some genius president. He really was in some ways the SCOAMF of his time. And worse. Besides the whore-mongering, suppression of civil rights legislation and nearly blundering into World War 3, there was the PT 109 incident. Far from the hero that he is portrayed, he was actually brought up on charges of dereliction of duty. However, papa Joe Sr. managed to have the charges dropped. And the naval officer who was going to prosecute Kennedy? He wound up as a justice on the Supreme Court. Byron White. Funny. Oliver Stone never put that in his movie.

19 Contrary to the latest "Issa is a traitor from Axeldouche" for releasing names of Libyans helping the US, after a quick look (Did not do the full research of every page), the few pages of documents that Issa released that I did see were stamped "Unclassified".

Obviously, DoS doesn't understand that boilerplate information that might reveal how the government actually functions (or disfunctions) should be classified to prevent the taxpayers from seeing it.

Interesting also that although the Libyans are our new best friends in the ME, the Dems are worried about reprisals against Libyans that assist us in the Benghazi investigation.  Funny how that level of concern for foreign nationals helping us didn't seem to be a problem for the Pakistani doctor that helped Obama personally kill Osama.

20 Good morning friends in a box. While looking at the news I was just curious if Good looking female reporters have figured out that there is no law and order in Egypt. You would have thought the Logan assault would have been enough. But oh no, hell no. The Frenchy French reporter strutted he pork chop ass in the Lions den and got it ate. Logan I felt compassion for, this french chick? Not so much. This Narcissistic I'm special untouchable reporter attitude is also what allows them to lie and shape stories on all subjects with impunity. These efforts damage our country as well as people on an individual level. It is my belief that reporters and editors should be held responsible. If the slander and libel laws will not be supported then maybe its time for some private citizen activity.

All unclassified or classified documents prepared under a Democrat administration represent a sacred trust with the American people and should never be folded, spindled, mutilated, or viewed except by a Democrat review team with impeccable socialist credentials!

Desktops are not tablets and tablet interfaces lack all sorts of shit, anyway. Why anyone would try to make the desktop more like a tablet rather than the other way around is perplexing. But, then again, we have so many techies trying to shove Farcebook and Twatter and the rest of that crap down our throats, too. With ubuntu linux, one can just trash their crappy desktop and put a decent one on with no problem but too many people aren't going to be bothered with doing that and are rightfully worried that any company stupid enough to push this crap on people will move forward in ways that will make it more and more difficult for normal people to work with them. It's funny how ubuntu pulled all th is shit without asking or telling their users anything. Of course, they don't owe their users shit, but ubuntu are your typical leftist douches who like to pretend that they "care about the little guy" and they are so caring that they named the OS in african, to give a nod to a place that never had anything to do with computers or technology in any way, whatsoever. Such nice superior people ... throwing a bone to the noble savages ... All of the these software companies are falling all over themselves trying to be Apple. They forget that Apple has hits and then implodes. And Apple lives off of fanbois and hype. Microsoft can't do that. They are stupid to try. Ubuntu are just being the brain-dead leftists they are. Frankly, I'm tiring of Linux, too. Linus Torvalds is another leftist douche who should DIAF ... slowly. A major phase change in technology is coming. Not Farcebook or any of that shit. They are part of the last phase. Something new is on the way. These leftists will not sustain. They are too suicidal to stick around too long.

Madieu fucked up by letting him get behind him.  The Skins are pretty fucking banged up in the secondary plus London Fletcher was out with a hammy twinge so their coverage underneath was less than ideal.  That was the first game I've watched all season because I hate that pudgy turd Roger Goodell plus no Redskins games had been covered here in NE Ohio (yes I'm a transplanted Skins fan).  RG3 is the best young QB Washington's had since they fleeced the Iggles for Sonny Jurgensen.

91 I understand their desire to make the transition back and forth between a tablet and a desktop transparent and seamless. And ultimately (I guess) between a phone and a desktop. I don't even understand that. And I don't thinkt hat's what motivates them, anyway. I think they are all succumbing to the fad notion (the "meme", if you will) that desktops are on the edge of extinction (which is about the silliest idea I have ever heard). They seem to be convinced that everyone wants to have touch screens everywhere. I mean, these people are insane. There's enough carpal tunnel with friggin mouses, let alone having someone use a 34" desktop touch screen that he needs to hold his arm up to touch. WTFFF is with these idiots? But ... they all want to be fashionable. With leftists, it always comes down to fashion. But....as you point out; they aren't the same things! Different interfaces for good reasons. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 22, 2012 07:30 AM (2b4yb) Yep. A phone is still a phone. Sure, people might watch movies on it if they are stuck in a cave, but if you have a bigger screen available, you're not going to use your phone for anything other than making a phone call - and you probably won't do that since you can use skype free for video calls and cell phones are a total ripoff and too small to be useful for anything except when you're in the middle of a desert or need something totally portable ... i.e. not at home. The tech world can't help from shooting itself in the foot like this. It happens every generation. And it couldn't happen to a nicer gang of shitheads.

We have to win this election because besides all of the other damage Obama can and will do, he will more than likely get to name three additional Supreme Court Justices and then it's game the fuck over for America.

He will name young radicals to the court and have a 5-4 edge with dumb fuck Roberts providing a 6-4 mandate on any and all socialism that comes before it and when that happens we will literally have a socialist country instead of the quasi socialist country we have now.

He will also go down as only offering up a single budget in the entirety of his Presidency.

Which is probably the most unconstitutional trick the President and the Donks have pulled so far.

Good morning, all.  Thanks for the news, Gabe and Vic.

Vic, have you ever seen Thirteen Days?  It's stuffed with the whole "JFK was a hero who saved the world from mad bomber Curtis LeMay," but on the whole, not a bad movie.  Interesting, too, just to watch Kevin Costner with the worst Baaahhston accent I've ever heard.

Anyway, on Friday I promised today would be a little info on silent comedy.

Chaplin still has a huge (and to me, undeserved) reputation as a genius; this was cemented in the 1960s by critics like Walter Kerr who, in addition to seeing his shorts through the refracting lens of nostalgia, also had sympathy for his left-wing political positions, considering his denunciation as a Red to be a badge of honor.  I have never been able to sit through one of his movies, though if you have to, The Kid (or, to a lesser extent, City Lights and The Gold Rush) can be entertaining.  Forget the later ones – Monsieur Verdoux, Limelight, and especially The Great Dictator – overstuffed, preachy, bathetic nonsense.

If you want to see Chaplin and laugh, then IÂ’d recommend two shorts – One AM and The Pawnbroker.  The first is essentially a solo act, and is a funny movie version of ChaplinÂ’s stage drunk act, playing a bon vivant who is trying to go to bed.  The second has a scene where Chaplin is examining a clock that has been presented to pawn, and is, perhaps, the funniest thing Chaplin ever put on film.  YMMV.

If youÂ’ve never seen Buster Keaton, IÂ’d recommend holding off on any of the famous movies such as The General, Sherlock Jr or Our Hospitality.  Start with one I recommended on Friday – his very last feature, 1965Â’s The Railrodder.  Keaton plays himself, the “Great Stone Face” character, who accidentally starts up a track inspection car and rides it all the way across Canada (it was a film specially commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada).  It gives you a very good idea of the kind of inventive, mechanically-driven comedy that makes Keaton so very, very good.  Then go on to the 1920 short One Week, where Buster and his new wife try to put a prefab house together.  This short ends with one of KeatonÂ’s famous “can only be filmed once” stunts.  If you enjoy those two, then move on to the bigger features.

Harold Lloyd is also gaining new respect, as his films become generally available (Lloyd owned the rights to all his films and never re-released them during his lifetime except as parts of a compilation).  IÂ’m not a Lloyd fan, but you must watch Safety Last to see why he was known as the greatest of the “daredevil” comics.

There are plenty of lesser known lights as well, including Roscoe Arbuckle, Stan Laurel, Larry Semon, Harry Langdon, Mabel Normand and Snub Pollard.  Take them all in small doses, though, as comedy shorts (especially the Keystone StudioÂ’s) can get very tiresome very fast.  IÂ’d recommend Fatty and Mabel Adrift for Arbuckle and Normand, The Extra Girl for Normand herself (and also starring Stooge nemesis Vernon Dent), The Butcher Boy for Arbuckle himself, Sold At Auction for Pollard and Just Rambling Along for Laurel.

Semon, though occasionally funny, is very wearying; he is so afraid of losing the audience that his films are packed with too much action (if one fat man falling down porch stairs is funny, ten fat men falling down an elevator shaft is even funnier).  And Langdon is so unique I donÂ’t recommend him at all unless you are very familiar with silent comedy; otherwise, he looks as if heÂ’s not doing anything at all.

And, of course, I have to recommend Marion DaviesÂ’ 1928 short Show People, a very funny look at Hollywood itself, with DaviesÂ’ character Peggy Pepper (renamed, as an actress, Patricia Peppoir) doing her level best to become a star.

Everything is available on YouTube or DVD.  So take a look, if youÂ’re interested, and I wish you a happy time.

IÂ’ll return tomorrow with a couple of David Niven stories.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

109 I am still running XP.  One thing I learned about Windows long long ago.  It is garbageware.  Every version that comes out uses more disk space and more memory than the version before it.

And the crap they added to make it hog more memory is usually shit that I don't give a damn about using. I have often considered moving to a new interface but it doesn't appear to be worth the effort.

Posted by: Vic at October 22, 2012 03:48 AM (YdQQY)

110 Other than the learning curve for Windows 8's new UI, the other problem is the very closed nature of the OS. If you want apps that work with the new interface, you must purchase them from the Windows Store, and MS has complete control over the certification process for apps sold there. On the other hand, one can use the "old" interface and run apps there as today, which will allow us to continue to play violent FPS and Skyrim type games that would not make the cut under the certification rules. I predict flop, sadly. Hope I'm wrong. The market needs up, not down.

118 It's not at all surprising that Team Obama is pulling out all the stops to gin up the black vote. You don't need a ouija board to know that right now Obama would lose the election. Just watch the level of desperation in the media. Just follow the money and the candidates. Romney now is expanding into places like PA. Obama is pulling out of key states he won last time around. States that Obama won by double digits in '08 now are within the MOE in media polling, and the media polls are oversampling Democrats and in some cases (PPP, Marist) simply making shit up to fit their obvious agenda. Still plenty of work to be done, however. Don't underestimate the extent to which brain dead conservatives can be duped into not voting. On Election Day proper the media will early call stuff for Obama, they'll float bogus "exit polls" alleging Obama with a huge lead in a key state or two, they'll do all sort of stuff to suppress the conservative vote. And to a certain extent it'll work. No question. The fraud in places like Cleveland, Philly and Milwaukee will be brazen. Romney in OH, for example, needs not only to win he needs to have a sufficient margin such that Dems-media-unions can't steal it from him. Romney is in good shape. But the race is far from over.

Not to mention that Kennedy forward positioned nukes in a predominately islamic country minutes away from Moscow as the ICBM flies -- which started the entire tit-for-tat positioning of nukes in Cuba.

If I was ever in a debate where someone pulled the 'you're not Jack Kennedy' card I have an entire encyclopedia of reasons to add to after I said, "It's time you leftists got over your love affair with JFK".

Very funnel-ish behavior me thinks. But I suppose when one is transitioning from being a software-mostly to a hardware-also company, that is understandable.

The local fishwrap, revealed that oops Kennedy missed about a hundred tactical nukes, 50 years ago.

The local Kennedy jizz-rag (aka Boston Globe) had a story about Kennedy reading Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August and insisting he wasn't going to a let a series of mistakes in Cuba lead to war.  Turns out that - whoops! - the files of the Imperial German High Command reveal that, contrary to Tuchman's thesis that WWI began because everybody blundered into it, the Germans wanted a war and were certain they would win.  So JFK acted as he did because Tuchman didn't have access to the right material.

151 JFK was not a popular President during his first term.  What you see now is all the hype that came out after he was assassinated.

And it is widely acknowledged that he stole the election in Chicago and TX.  Nixon's advisers tried to get him to challenge IL and TX and he said it would be bad for the country.

But Nixon was evil.

152 Mornin Horde. I'm sitting here, an hour later, still feeling sick and shaking. I saw a kid almost get splattered all over the road.

Our office is on a corner with a stoplight. I'm sitting at the light, it turns green and just as I start to pull forward I see a kid is already partially in the crosswalk and he's gonna run across. Prob 10 years old, black, jeans and a dark sweatshirt. Still pretty dark outside. Just as he crosses in front of my truck, I catch motion out of the corner of my eye in the side mirror. It's a semi, doing about 45 mph. The kid doesn't see it and runs right out in front of it. I was absolutely certain the kid was splattered. Somehow, only the grace of God knows how, the kid made it across to the sidewalk. That semi couldn't have missed him by more than 18 inches.

Alright, I think I'm gonna go puke and then read the comments. Back in a few.

158 A couple things, Gab's first point of analysis is wrong.  Battleground isn't moving toward Romney and hoping "it is enough".  They adjusted their sample to line up closer to reality.  They went from D+4 to D+2.  I have an analysis up on my blog (link in nic).

Today's reweights (now with shiny new Gallup included!):

R+0.38% - Current RCP Average
R+0.37% - Average using the 2008 turnout model
R+2.87% - Average using the D+3 turnout model
R+4.86% - Average using the 2010 turnout model
R+4.94% - Average using the 2004 turnout model
R+6.42% - Average using the Rasmussen Party ID turnout model

Notice something there?  The complete lack of Obama leading in any of the turnout models.  The current RCP continues to reflect a 2008 turnout model.

163 I still remember the Cuban missile crisis. My dad was a volunteer fireman at the time and was getting some information from some govmint agency that spooked him. We lived just a couple miles outside of Philly -- which probably was target number three or four after Washington and New York. I had to help him clean out a basement room and cover the tiny window, while my mom stocked up on something like a hundred dollars worth of canned goods. The grocery stores were nearly empty.

He told me that one minute siren was just a test, but the code for the fire company was three minutes and that meant hit the basement -- the birds were in flight. One afternoon in the middle of the blockade the fire company accidentally hit the three minute button. I think I shat my pants after the second minute. That was the longest three minutes of my life.

172 JFK was the SCOAMF of his time. His myth-like status is completely undeserved. About the only thing he did that I would agree with was tax cuts. Other than that, he was a jelly donut. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at October 22, 2012 08:05 AM (+tqYo) Generally true. JFK got his mythical status because he was assassinated so early. But he was a pretty dismal failure. I do agree with what he said to the Soviets in reaction to the Cuban Missile Crisis (which was only brought on, of course, because JFK was such a weak piece of shit - the same reason for the construction of the Berlin Wall): Third: It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere as an attack on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union. I like that. If Cuba even tossed a nuke at Guyana or Chile the US would launch a full retaliatory nuke strike on the USSR. Of course, to dems today, just that threat is, itself, a war crime. And a hate crime, no doubt. But, other than that, JFK was a total failure. He screwed up things with the USSR with his naivete and stupidity (as opposed to Barky screwing things up with his hate of America and love and deep attachment to the islamic world and islamic worldview). JFK was a true SCOAMF. Barky is a malevolent retard traitor.

For the same reason that Barky and the dems got debt ceiling raises but we're all still stuck with the un-Constitutional, anti-Constitutional, illegal and stupid ObamaCare - even after that blowout mandate they got in 2010 to stop all this shit and start turning the ship away from the iceberg we've been steaming directly towards. 223 Barack Obama may not be able to eliminate trillion dollar deficits, lower multi-trillion dollar debt, or lower unemployment but he can eliminate the most important issue; that nine dollar co-pay on birth control pills that is destroying so many women's lives. He needs to continue subsidizing a profitable enterprise so that Big Bird lives in the lap of luxury -- for the children. The women in this country realize the key issue in this election is their lady parts.

Also, George Bush.

So Holder is "in contempt?" So friggin' what? What does that mean? Doesn't seem to be affecting him in any way.

It is Issa's "fault" that he doesn't finish what he starts. He gets the headlines for a few days/weeks with each example of Bad Shit he finds, then goes on to another and forgets the previous one.

Somewhat older townhome neighborhood.
And a distinct pattern is emerging. Some sections have Romney signs out, and for the most part are neat and trim.
Some sections are pretty much sign-less, and still look well kept and clean.
Then you run into the sections with the Obama signs. And the back alleys look like crap, the front lawns are over-run with junk, and no effort to maintain any sort of standard of appearance.

297 AtC, how you feeling this morning? Too much wine and brownies? I'm okay, headachy which is not actually related to the wine and brownies and freezing cold. I could fix this by putting on my space heater but I am afraid of my space heater. I am convinced the thing is going to catch on fire. On the Win8 thing, I sort of understand the concept of moving to a unified OS between phone/pc/tablet but whoever it was above who noted that this loses sight of the enterprise workplace is right. I don't actually mind different. I do mind completely changing things for no reason. There's no way I would suggest upgrading for a business. Businesses are already crippled by the tyranny of the least able user and taking away the start button is just begging for disaster. I have a beta version of Office 13 and I hate hate hate hate the presentation. The lack of contrast on the text of the menu options makes it very difficult to read and I'll be damned if I can figure out where to change the settings. It's like what google did with gmail wherein the interface became more or less unreadable. It's not cleaner and more modern looking, it's squint inducing.

There are several houses here with RR signs now. OTOH, there have been signs for local judges for months.

Many more houses have signs for "40 days for life". Including one house that has that sign right next to a for sale sign, which makes me smile. Not feeling any need to hide what you believe! (it's a pro-life campaign)

Have not seen a single Obama sign. Have seen 2-3 bumperstickers a couple months ago, but nothing that would indicate they were new.

303 Windows 8 actually runs faster than 7 on the same hardware, but some people just seize up at the sight of the "tablet interface" replacing their start menu. It really isn't all that radical if you think about it; instead of clicking a virtual button to get to your stuff, you just start with a screen of... your stuff. And it's arranged with the stuff you use most first, then the rest in a big list. Then instead of having applications represented by little cartoon drawings of things like calendars and mailboxes, you get tiles that show you what's happening in those applications without having to open them. I'm actually hoping that 8 helps WinRT become the .NET that .NET always wanted to be, and from here on out all apps will be well-behaved and pretty.

Posted by: dorian taupe at October 22, 2012 05:23 AM (IfM3l)

304 That list will grow. None of these gripes ever get worked off; new bugs get added to an ever-growing list. How long do you think it will take until there's so much downtime that even Ace can't ignore it? If I had a vendor with a record of failure and unresponsiveness like this, I'd fire him and hire a new one. Its been almost a year since the comments section broke. That's piss-poor. 309 On the Win8 thing, I sort of understand the concept of moving to a unified OS between phone/pc/tablet but whoever it was above who noted that this loses sight of the enterprise workplace is right. Okay, I have to defend Microsoft here. Win8 does have (with the exception of the start-button) the same functionality as Win7. You don't *have* to use Tiles. That said, rumors out of Microsoft (just rumor at this point) say that they'll be going back to the old model of one OS for home users (tiles, etc.) and a different OS for enterprise/business users which is more stays with the Start Button and shortcuts and such. As for Office 13, I've heard differing stories about it. Any UI problems (bad contrast, etc.) I would expect to be fixed in the not-to-distant future.

313 Windows 8 makes perfect sense if you get a convertible laptop or one of those Surface devices in the future. The reason they made the start screen the way they did is that they are assuming people will pin their favorite and most used programs to the start screen. So if your a power user and you want access to control panel, you just pin the tile there and click it. A tip to people who are scared of using the interface: There are many 3rd party start menus out there right now that allow you to boot directly into the Desktop and have the same functionality that you did in Windows 7.

334 Current local radio banter re: the Romney generational family's non-military service -- true enough, Romneys have never enlisted into the US Military.

And sticking strictly to paternal genealogy, neither did the Obama family of Kenya ever serve in the US Military.

Romney American Family:

1837 Miles Romney (Britain) converted to Mormonism and emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois to join with Joseph Smith. (No online membership roll of the Nauvoo Legion of ILLINOIS available.)

1846-47 No Romney volunteered in the US sponsored Mormon Battalion march against Mexico. (from A Concise History of the Mormon  Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847 by Sergeant Daniel Tyler)

The closest that the Romney family ever "served" the US was to provide shelter during the subsequent Mexican Revolution in the Mormon Mexican Dublin (Romney) Colony after 1916. Pancho Villa attacked a New Mexican border town, outraged by Pres. Wilson's "treachery" favoring his revolutionary opponent. Villa considered his friendly treatment of Americans to date was used to Villa's disadvantage. Pres. Wilson ordered Pershing (National Guard units called up volunteers in the Southwestern States) to take the US Army into Mexico chasing Villa whose headquarter region was Chihuahua, same territory shared by the Mormon colonists including the Romney family in their Dublin Colony.

There were yet those Mormon colonists in Mexico that didn't flee the violence and threats of Mexican revolutionaries, returning back into the US with the majority, but instead remained with their property and harbored General Pershing's forces. The Romney colonial property of Dublin, Mexico served as Pershing's Headquarters. The American Mormons there provided Pershing with "intelligence". The quality of said intelligence, however, led the US Army on no better than a wild goose chase after the wily Villa. And when the US Army mistakenly attacked Mexican citizens not of Villa's rebels on the basis of that "intelligence", news broadcast by US media led to Wilson ordering Pershing to retreat back into the USA. There are yet Romneys living in their Mexican Mormon colony, though the American Romneys no longer communicate with their relatives left behind.

Aside from that exercise, the closest involvement the Romney family has had with the US Military is in managing war industrial contracts with ALCOA etc.

2008 Mitt Romney told the press that his sons serving his presidential campaign was their service to their nation. However he's spun that today still doesn't hold water to our current Military Personnel when Romney's foreign policy is no more clear than "wait until after the election" to learn.

336 Other than the learning curve for Windows 8's new UI, ... I predict flop, sadly. Hope I'm wrong. The market needs up, not down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Frankly, I don't think "flop" is going to do this justice. The more accurate term, IMO, is going to be "Epic Failure". Literally billions of people know how Windows operates. And virtually none of them have a need for this change. I've run ever version of Windows except ME and I'm not remotely interested in even trying 8. None. I sure as hell wouldn't pay for it.

It's the clunky interface and step backwards to the 'walled garden' model that are going to blow up in their faces. I skipped Vista and went from XP to 7 for practical reasons--smoothest version transition I ever had. Looks like I'm skipping 8 as well.

Well said. The first thing I do on a new PC is disable that "personalized menus" shit. God I hate that, for so many reasons, but not least because it discourages the user from exploring what some of the other options do.

I'm going to welcome Windows 8 the way I would welcome herpes, based on my observation that every other Microsoft operating system blows chunks. Win 95? Shit. Win 98? OK. Win ME? Sucked donkey dicks. Win XP? OK. Win Vista? Would have to improve to suck. Win 7? OK.

So I figure Windows 8 will be unusably bad. When the malodorous leftist geeks in Redmond fix the worst fuck ups (see "Vista" --> "Win 7"), and roll out Windows 9, then we'll talk.

This is the part that kills me. Why change it? We know how to use Windows, so why mess with it? In a rational world, there would have to be a HUGE advantage to justify that.

For my part, I'd be happy sticking with my current OS (Win 7) to the end of my days. Hell, for that matter, I'd have been happy sticking with XP, too. The problem is that the asshole computer manufacturers force the latest MS OS on users, whether the OS is worth a shit or not.
