Happy Wednesday.

Last night, news broke that the White House was informed that Ansar al Sharia had taken credit for the Benghazi attack just hours after it happened. ICYMI, Ace had a post on it.

Bob Woodward has offered a sort-of explanation for why Obama might not have known that the idea for sequestration originated with the White House and not Congress, as Obama fatuously claimed at Monday's debate.

According to Woodward, "maybe [Obama] didnÂ’t know that they were doing this because itÂ’s kind of technical budget jargon." But that's stupid. Federal budgeting is technical and so are the details of the sequestration cuts, but the source of the idea of sequestration cuts isn't technical. It involves no jargon, no math, no obscure Congressional knowledge, nothing other than one or two or, at most, three names for the guys who proposed the idea. On the other hand, I think it's fantastic that Woodward is trying to protect the President by saying he's too stupid to understand budgets. Boy, wouldn't that explain a lot?

And the editor of the Des Moines Register, which I expect will endorse President Obama soon, is lodging a protest of sorts over the Obama campaign's inexplicable decision to require that the paper report nothing, record nothing, reveal nothing about their thirty-minute phone call with the President. As someone put it on Twitter, Obama has finally started talking to the press again, but only on condition that the press won't report on it.

Now at the end of the last campaign of his life, Obama is squirming like a worm on a hook. Even if Obama manages to win in two weeks, students of political science will study the failure of Obama's negative campaign for decades. The old conventional wisdom -- negative campaigning works -- is going to need a major revision.

22 Kindle Daily Deal:

The Great Crash of 1929  - John Kenneth Galbraith

In America during the 1920s rampant speculation collided with record trading volumes to create the Great Crash. Every financial bubble since 1929 has been compared to this economic catastrophe. It's why this classic examination of the late'20s financial collapse has stayed in print since it became a best seller in 1955.

(From Vic)  IÂ’m not sure I would recommend this book.  Sure, the stock market crash was caused by the normal thing, a run-away bubble collapse.  But the stock market crash is so often called the cause of the Great Depression and nothing could be further from the truth. Also this guy is a raging liberal commie.  I would recommend Amity Shlaes book, The Forgotten Man for serious reading.   But for 1.99 it may be worth a check.

And that's it for this morning

As for the campaign itself it is not a valid test of the old wisdom of negative campaigning. He is losing for two major reasons and a myriad of minor ones:

1.  The economy is shit and most people recognize it is his fault and not Bush's.

2. His campaign is the worst one done since the civil war.

Until then Republicans just might want to actually have a sense of history and know these questions will be coming up and have an answer for them. Honestly half these candidates on both sides (though D's show it off less often due to the media's lack of interest) seem shocked when questions almost any person on an online forum with an IQ over the average temperature of Siberia in winter knows is coming in some form and yet they never seem to have put though into an answer in advance. Honestly it is like watching high schoolers in debates for offices half the time with the shear scrambling and unpreparedness- and then we are supposed to trust they can somehow craft laws to govern?

That's a distinct possibility, as the guy didn't clear 900 in his SATs ... though not the truth at the bottom of this case. Barky doesn't know what the word "sequestration" is (he thought it had something to do with Mitt's horses) but he knows how he rolled the Weeping Boner to screw over America and insure a decimation of our military. Barky was just doing his pathological liar thing. Yes, he's a total idiot who can't even understand arithmetic with fractions (I still think Mitt should have hit with something like, "What is 3/9 - 8/12?") but getting the Weeping Boner to sign onto a destruction of the American military was one of his all-time greatest moves (to an America-hating leftist). Of course, we all knew it didn't take much to roll Boner, the fucking crybaby dirtbag.

Shorpy's a great site, Vic.  And they do sometimes have color versions of their photos; just dig around for them.

When are these stupid Republicans going to quit going to debates hosted by the fucking MFM?

Better yet, when Romney wins, is there any way the WaPo and NYT and CNN and the rest of the bastards be RICO'd for the way they've acted as, in the Blogfather's words, "Democrat operatives with bylines?"  If the only way to get a balanced press is to RICO, audit and grand jury the fuckers until they bleed, then Romney and Ryan should have the balls to do it.  Make.  Them.  Pay.

Anyway, on to our Hollywood moment.  Here are a couple of interlocking stories.  Nothing heavy, just some lightness as we count down the 13 days until our long national embarrassment is over:

Richard Burton, in addition to his talents in acting, drinking and wenching (after screwing Liz for the first time, he returned to the set of Cleopatra and announced, “Gentlemen, I have just shtupped Elizabeth Taylor in the back of my Cadillac”) was also a gifted mimic.  One day, during his time at the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was entertaining a group with a dead-on impersonation of Sir John Gielgud.  Suddenly, everyone grew quiet; Burton turned around to see Gielgud himself standing there.

“Mr. Burton,” Sir John said dryly, “in my experience, I have found that very good impersonators are not very good actors.”

That, however, was a rare bit of successful snark from Gielgud, who was infamous in London theatrical circles for his gaffes (“dropping a brick,” as the Brits call it).  One of his most famous goofs occurred during a lunch at the Savoy with the now-forgotten playwright Edward Knoblock, who was himself infamous as a tiresome bore.

As lunch went on, Gielgud suddenly saw a man weaving his way through the tables and tensed up, not relaxing until the man passed them.  “Oh, thank God he didnÂ’t join us,” Gielgud sighed in relief.  “HeÂ’s a bigger bore than Eddie Knoblock.”

“LetÂ’s face it,” Gielgud said later, telling the story on himself.  “IÂ’ve dropped enough bricks to build the Great Wall of China.”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

49 "Even if Obama manages to win in two weeks, students of political science will study the failure of Obama's negative campaign for decades." That really is a staggeringly naive statement. Poli sci students are "taught" by airheaded liberals. Not only that but by airheaded liberals who washed out when disco still was relevant. The textbooks they read are written by airheaded liberals. If Obama wins nobody in the media-academe complex will speak in terms of failures of any kind. They'll preen, they'll pose, they'll beat their chests, and they'll gloat. Decades from now young kids in poli sci programs will be told that Obama was a "transformative" president of great stature, domestically and internationally, who to the extent he didn't manage to accomplish all his objectives solely was on account of a virulent strain of racism that underscored his opposition. There are no moral victories in politics. There are winners. There are losers. That is all. Come on, clue in.

58 #54  Why even answer this question?  I like how Romney handled the hypothetical question on Israel.

Just because a question is asked in a debate doesn't mean you have to answer it?

And why was it even asked?  Oh, to derail the campaign.

I am from Indiana,  and this is just stupidity.  Donnelly (the dem) is a Catholic who will make hay out of it and we only have one big paper,  the Indianapolis Star which is a Gannett paper and leftist,  so for the next 2 weeks that is all they are going to talk about.

I hope he can pull through,  but this is a notorious ticket-splitting state and Romney' s coattails might not be enough.

59 WHEN Romney wins he will not be able to prosecute the press for biased reporting.  Unfortunately it is not against the law and even if it was the courts would never uphold it.  As for RICO, in order to prosecute under that statute you must first have two or more convictions for felonies.

My feeling is that once Romney is elected he will be the new "Bush".  Everything that goes on will be "Romney's fault".  Even good thing will be portrayed as bad and "Romney's fault".

No, that's actually not what he said.  That's the media smear.

Here is what he actually said:

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God," Mourdock said. "I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

The rape is not the blessing, the child is.

Any conservative with three brain cells to rub together should be nodding along, not repeating the media smears and staging Daffy Duck freakouts.

70 The reason these periodic foot in mouth things come along are twofold:

1. Every MFM in the world tries to hit Republican candidates with gotcha questions while they lob softballs at the Dems.  Out of the hundreds of thousands of hits a few slip ups are going to happen. Then all of the MFM will take those slip ups out of context and spread them like wild fire.

2. The second reason they occur is that the lying asshole simply manufacture them when they don't occur like 99.9% of the Palin lies they came up with.

The way to avoid them is quit going on MFM hit job shows.  Or at least learn the Dem strategy of not answering questions.

71 Then again, conservatives seem to have bought the progg premise that children are not blessings or miracles or gifts from God, they're something a woman chooses to do for personal reasons.  No more mystery or fate or divine spark than picking out a new moisturizer, really.  Women just decide and do it.

It's really obvious when they bash the childless--trust me, childlessness is not always a 'choice', my cousin who quit after a half-dozen miscarriages and stillbirths did not choose that.

It's also really fucking annoying.  We should be better than proggs.

Lugar should have RETIRED.  I cannot fathom why he didn't.  He would have left to a round of "thank you for your service" dinners and everyone would have let their anger about all of his votes be forgotten.

Why did he think he should stay for 6 more years?  He is 80!  I can only assume that there was more value in being in the Senate than retiring,  and then I start remembering rumors and weird votes and wonder if he was being blackmailed.  He has behaved in a shabby way and is destroying what legacy he did have in this state.

115 I think Christians have a pretty good idea of God's will when it comes to the sanctity of life and most everything else.

Late to the discussion here.

In a general sense, sure.  In a specific sense, no so much.  There's also the fact that God's will is that we have free choices, which means people can do things (and, therefore, consequences can occur) that are not His will.

You start getting on very shaky ground when you talk about "God's will" in anything but the most general sense.  It is God's will that we consider life a sacred gift.  It is not always His will that we protect a specific life.

Mostly, it's safer just to avoid appeals to "God's will" when you're talking specifics- and the question of rape is *always* specific.

As for Mourdock's statement- the only problem with it is it requires people to use their brains and think.  Unfortunately, the Media has succeeded in making that a dangerous, if not completely self-defeating, tactic.

Yeah, that only works for Democrats.

You would then have a situation where the moderator, the challenger and the audience would be yelling at the Republican.

The question is so easy to answer its child's play.

You say "I am fully pro-life in my position, abortion is wrong and immoral in all cases except for the life of the mother.

My opponent is fully pro-choice and believes that a baby can be destroyed at any time for any reason up to and including just before birth by the use partial birth abortion, which partially delivers a baby leaving just the head inside the mother, an abortionist then takes scissors and punctures the skull and using a vacuum, sucks the brains out, collapsing the skull. The baby is then removed and discarded into the trash to be picked up and thrown into a landfill as you would throw away your garbage."

It doesn't really matter if your opponent believes that you see, the audience will recoil in horror at having the disgusting procedure of partial birth abortion being revealed, they will forget about rape, it will make your opponent and the moderator go on defense at having to explain why being fully pro life  is some how immoral and why massacring babies is a holy sacrament to women and progressives.

This is how you have to handle this crap.

Posted by: Y-not, scary Catholic at October 24, 2012 07:59 AM (5H6zj) Well then, I guess you can be disappointed in Romney cause he just said he disagrees with the candidate. Agree or disagree I wish sometimes the GOP candidates would learn to skillfully dodge the questions that can so easily be manipulated. ---------------- There is nothing wrong with Mourdock's statement. It is crystal clear he is saying all human life has God-given value. Mourdock is right as is Mitt's running mate, Paul Ryan, who has agreed to conform to Mitt's flawed view but who agrees with Mourdock on moral grounds. I am well-aware that Mitt is NOT a no exceptions pro-lifer. There's a reason I wish the ticket were flipped and that is one of them. If Mitt chooses to distance himself from Mourdock, that's his business. I think it is unnecessary and mildly offensive, frankly, to not defend Mourdock's right to have faith-based beliefs, particularly given the shit storms that we have been fending off re some of Mitt's religious beliefs. This is not like the questions reporters ask about doctrinal issues of a person's religious sect, such as questions about Creationism or who can join a religious group's priesthood. A candidate for Senate cannot -- and should not -- dodge a question about abortion. It falls under his job description (or pay-grade).

You have to put these pricks on the defense.

We have a situation where being fully pro-life is being painted as a bizarre and immoral position and that being fully pro-life is the default and moral position.

Why do you think rape and abortion are being co-mingled, huh?

You start getting on very shaky ground when you talk about "God's will" in anything but the most general sense. It is God's will that we consider life a sacred gift. It is not always His will that we protect a specific life.

Mostly, it's safer just to avoid appeals to "God's will" when you're talking specifics- and the question of rape is *always* specific.

As for Mourdock's statement- the only problem with it is it requires people to use their brains and think. Unfortunately, the Media has succeeded in making that a dangerous, if not completely self-defeating, tactic.

Americans will never tolerate honor killings in this country.

Except in cases  of rape, incest, or to protect the "health" of the mother.  Then it's Game On.

173 "I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God," Mourdock said. "I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen." ----- There is no parsing required. The grammatical construction of Mourdock's remarks are perfectly clear. The thrust of the first sentence is "life is a gift from God." That is reinforced in the second sentence. The subject of the first clause in the second sentence is "life," meaning the "it" in the second clause clearly refers to "life." I appreciate that a lot of folks believe that abortion is acceptable, or even desirable, in the case of rape. I think that is a morally (and logically) indefensible position if you believe that human life begins during fetal development (or at conception), but it will take time to persuade the majority of that view. However, I am appalled that someone who holds the position that Mourdock holds is supposed to hide it or apologize for it. Fuck that.

Here's the dirty little secret - a slim majority DOES hold the view that abortion is morally wrong.  The trouble lies in that, at the same time, a lot of folks want to have a "get out of responsibility free" card just in case the condom rips or something.  Sort of like how most people will say they think that cheating on their spouse is wrong, yet something like a third of the country does it.  the problem isn't *so much* in getting people to recognise the intrinsic wrongness of abortion, but in getting people to be morally, ethically, and logically consistent in their response to that knowledge.

"Supposed to" only applies if you want to win the election.  The majority favors some degree of abortion right  in the earliest stages.  In Europe because they don't have a court precedent acting like a statute they can haggle over the number of weeks and things like that.  It's insane to even bring it up because legislators can do so little about it.  But any candidate is free to give the media the ammo they want to fit their narrative and lose as a consequence.

Most people seem to think women have a limited right to choose, quickly.  Not nine months, or more, quickly.   I realize that averaging opinion doesn't give an accurate take of the variety and passion, but that's where the uncomfortable center seems to be.

213 Actually Y-not, SCOTUS has been "making law" for a long time. Ever since they decided that they had the power to decide whether or not a law was constitutional as opposed to just interpreting the words in the law as written.

Posted by: teej says go K-State at October 24, 2012 05:10 AM (/BwGa)

214 Y-Not: Suppose a woman decides not to terminate a rape-based pregnancy. Her baby is born. Is that woman supposed to think her child is less a gift from God than another woman's child?

As the child grows up, is he or she supposed to think God never intended for he or she to exist? The child is a horrible cosmic accident or, worse, the result of evil moving in the world?

If one does not believe in God, of course it's possible to answer those questions differently, but it's completely illogical to say God is God (omnipotent), yet intends only perfect children conceived in only perfect ways. Is it God's will that some children have birth defects, or are such children God's mistakes?

To argue with Mourdock's statement is to argue either atheism or at the least for a touchy-feely Christianity that is not internally consistent (which, unfortunately, is the kind of Christianity many who never bother to examine their own beliefs glide through life with).

217 Obama got Mitt Romney's OP-ED wrong because the discussion of bankruptcy was hypertechnical jargon. (Actually, a really smart friend of mine was making that argument a while ago, trying to parse out Obama's attack, saying that it is okay to be against Romney's argument for bankruptcy of the car companies and for Obama's actual bankruptcy of the car companies, because legal technicalities and common understanding of the word are different.)

219 Well, my fellow Catholics frequently suffer from that one.

It's one of the things the Church of Christ, somehow, as largely avoided.  I think it's because we always notice what happened to the Jerusalem Church in Acts when Jesus didn't immediately return.

Yeah, they all shared and had "no poor among them," until they were all needy because none of them could afford to buy food anymore.

But it is something that hits the Christian community all too often.  We see people in need, and we want to help them.  Too few people consider that it's not "charity" when you're stealing from one person to subsidize another.

Then there's that whole "he who won't work shouldn't eat" thing.

Are you referring to Benghazi?  Then yes.  He knew.  He knew for 10 months prior to the attack that the entire American Mission in Libya was understaffed and poorly secured.  He knew for several months that the Benghazi mission was exceptionally dangerous.  He knew of the attack immediately, and that it was a terror attack within 2 hours (BTW- if the reporting that the attack went on for 7 is correct, that means it continued for 5 hours after he knew it was a terror attack, and support could have been there within 1 - 3 hours).

I've got the last to parts of my review of those Benghazi documents going up today.  Look for the penultimate entry in about 15 minutes.

And to be honest, any Republican who gives any answer to a reporter asking this question should either walk away or not answer because they will ALWAYS take what they say out of context and then twist that to come up with their favored spin which is that Republicans are twisted and vicious "Right wing Christians" who will put women back in the kitchen bare foot and pregnant and the blacks back onto the plantation.

It's what they do, it's all that they do (these days), they'll never stop, they'll never rest until they lie about every Republican and destroy them.

But, it's pointless, because no one will really care and it ruins the momentum Romney is building.  It's just a news cycle distraction.

In a country with a 50% divorce rate, no one will care.

Although he claims to be pro life, his record isn't all that clear or that good.

It was one of his negatives that kept pro lifers from jumping on his bandwagon during the primaries. Now they have no choice (yuk yuk) and must support the best of a bad situation.

He also may just be expressing his disdain for those who talk to reporters without inwardly screening what they say because he knows that a reporter is the enemy and will use any scant excuse to smear a Republican.

"Taken back to the '50's"? WTF does that even mean? And she's supposed to be a Libertarian but is voting for the President who has grown the size of the federal government to its highest levels in the history of the country. She's an idiot, obviously. Or, as I suspect, she's a liberal who calls herself libertarian to hide that fact.

289 Is it possible that Romney could lose but Smith could win?

It's Pennsylvania so anything is possible. But the higher Romney/Ryan climbs the closer Casey gets to the precipice. The Smith ads have been pretty decimating while Casey seems to love the word 'extremist'.

They're gonna use that word over and over until the voters just yawn.

The Republicans are only "behind" in social media because it is primarily a tool of one voter segment that has always been loyal to Democrats -- young people. So, social media isn't the cause but the product of that Democrat advantage. The Republicans still have the advantage of their voters being more apt to vote in elections, regardless of whether they are targeted through social media, radio ads, or direct mail pieces.

It will be, unequivocally, the most idiotic decision made by U.S. voters in my lifetime if they vote to re-elect Obama. I haven't always agreed with the decisions of voters when electing Presidents, but I certainly understood why a candidate won each election. If Obama wins this time, all logic on the part of voters will be out the window.

397 Strange snapshot of going to an obama volunteer meeting in VA. http://freebeacon.com/i-was-an-obama-volunteer/ excerpt: The Virginia campaign is focusing almost exclusively on voter turnout in Northern Virginia, also known as “NoVa.” The southern part of the state is too red, too spread out, and too expensive to target effectively. “The advantage of Arlington is that it’s blue,” the organizer said. “The disadvantage is that people don’t vote.” Earlier in the election, people told the phone bankers to stop calling them because Obama had the state in the bag. Now people tell the phone bankers to stop calling them because Romney has the state locked up. Thirty-five percent of the campaign’s work will take place in the last three days of the election. The Obama campaign has been doing practice runs to fine tune their turnout operation during the Saturdays leading up to Election Day. Virginia Democrats registered 125,000 voters this cycle and hope to turn out 900,000. Which is where I—I mean, we—I mean, the volunteers—were supposed to come in. After the brief talk, the sign-up sheets came out. We were asked to sign up for a phone banking or canvassing shift.

Do NOT go off on pointless tangents that take up twice as much time as it took to communicate your request or other point, especially if THAT process took FOUR TIMES as long as it absolutely needed to. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you take ten minutes of a person's time for something that should have taken 2-3 minutes to communicate and resolve! Once the person has acknowledged and responded, please release them back to whatever it was they were trying to go when you casually traipsed in and started gnawing their ear off, repeating the same point five times after acknowledgement, and wandering off about side stories that are of no real consequence to the subject at hand or any of the people within theoretical earshot! In summary: YOUR POINT. GET TO IT. [Disclaimer: This is not intended to cover those who write for a living, intentional distractions, or Ace movie reviews. Your mileage may vary. When are these stupid Republicans going to quit going to debates hosted by the fucking MFM? How hard can it be to just say, "My personal view is that it's wrong to kill a child because of the criminal actions of one of its parents. However, politically, I recognize that the rape exception is something most Americans support, and I am willing to make that exception in the interests of saving more children." I'm a moron, and I have a canned answer ready. Why can't a Republican senate candidate?

440 A lot of "reach across the aisle" talk from Romney-Ryan on the campaign trail lately. This kind of talk, along with Romney's 3rd debate niceties, is totally geared toward the state of Ohio and its residents. Chris Matthews has a point......kinda. The right-wing hates Obama so much they will tolerate Mitt's "hard center" shift just to get Obama out. Matthews screws the pooch by saying this fact is a result of racial hatred. If Mitt wins, and I believe he will, I want such "niceties" to end in a hurry. Let's see those 10% across the board personell cuts at all federal agencies. And for God's sake, lets kick at least 10 million parasites off the food stamp rolls by raising eligibility back to sane and rational levels. Someone bringing in $4,000 a month in income can pay for their own fucking groceries. Let's see what ya got Mitt!

441 This may have been covered yesterday but here in deep blue CT, Rasmussen finds O up 7, 52-45. It was 60-39 last election. This is another reason to ignore all the bogus polls coming out. A 14 point swing nationally is probably what we're looking at when all is said and done. It was O 53-46 in 2008 and will probably be close to that this time, just with Romney at 53.

The Massachusetts senate race is one of the most important to Republicans keen on recapturing control of the Senate. But incumbent GOP Sen. Scott Brown says it doesn't much matter to him which party wins the majority in Washington.

"For me it doesn't really matter who's in charge," says the junior senator, who adds the real problem is the dwindling number of moderate Democrats and Republicans in the Senate.

"You still need to get to 60 votes," says Brown. "I'm tired of the gridlock. It makes me just so disgusted to walk in there and see, you know, the usual spotting on votes on both sides."

Brown says if Republicans gain control of the Senate, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the current minority leader, will still have to "earn my vote."

"I'm not going to be happy with the gridlock that we've had, so I'm going to wait and see and see who emerges, see if anyone's going to challenge him, and then I'll figure it out," says the junior senator, who agrees that McConnell bears some of the blame for the constant obstruction.

This is what Barky does. You can never go wrong by assuming that Barky held our military back for no reason other than to stall and cost America and Americans. It's Barky's main play.

In any case, your comment is a non sequitur as I said nothing about the victim's mental reaction, etc. that would require my having the ability to put myself in the woman's place.

My comment--which mostly took the form of questions--was about theological consistency regarding conception: is a sperm fertilizing an egg a divine miracle? You may say no, and in that case the two of us need not examine this subject further.

It seems, however, Todd Akin-like buffoonery to say God guides that one out of 200 million sperm directly to the egg when the sex is willing, but the resulting child is an evil cosmic accident when the sex is not.

But the WaPo, hoping its readers include undecideds in Ohio, or Oiho, want you to know all about what Mourdock said. Or what they want to tell you about it or something. And the NYT is ignoring most everything, trying to put their readership into a slumber, keeping them calm and sedated, not wanting to disturb.

Yes. I suppose it was about time for another Ace "we can't win!" meltdown, and the polls have been too good lately for him to have one over those. I wouldn't mind missing this one.

I think Mourdock would be smart to cut a new ad just replaying the question and his answer - in its entirety - with something like "just in case you wanted to know what I really said since the news media  won't tell you the truth" as the voice over tag at the end.  I think his actual answer was fine.

565 The question is so easy to answer its child's play. The baby is then removed and discarded into the trash to be picked up and thrown into a landfill as you would throw away your garbage." It doesn't really matter if your opponent believes that you see, the audience will recoil in horror at having the disgusting procedure of partial birth abortion being revealed, they will forget about rape, it will make your opponent and the moderator go on defense at having to explain why being fully pro life is some how immoral and why massacring babies is a holy sacrament to women and progressives. This is how you have to handle this crap. Posted by: General Woundwort at October 24, 2012 08:33 AM (06lNq) ***************+******* Sorry for the long repost, but ^THIS^ is hands down the best way of handling this bullshit that I have ever seen. Ace, etc. can we get a discussion of this sometime before the end of November? Even if it's after this election, you know this will continue to come up as a "gotcha!" until enough conservatives ram it back down their throats and rip it out their bleeding assholes on live TV. 576 >>The old conventional wisdom -- negative campaigning works -- is going to need a major revision.<<

Not really.  Nobody ever said that 100% negative campaigning was any kind of panacea.  Negative campaigning works when combined with positive tactics, woven together into an overall comprehensive strategy that both raises doubts about one's opponent and assuages doubt about one's self.  Going entirely negative turns around all those doubts and generates the stink of hollowness and desperation that typically cloaks losing campaigns - kinda like a certain one headquartered in Chicago right now.

595 The White House this morning attempted to down-play the significance of emails sent to top national security officials during the attack on the diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, one of which suggested a known terrorist group claimed credit for the attack in its immediate aftermath.

Carney today told reporters that there were emails about all sorts of information that was coming available in the aftermath of the attack. "There was a variety of information coming in," Carney said. "The whole point of an intelligence community and what they do is to assess strands of information and make judgments about what happened and who was responsible."

Moreover, officials said, the intelligence community still believes there wasn't a tremendous amount of planning before the attack. A terrorist group carrying it out doesn't mean it wasn't an opportunistic attack, officials said.

599 Just read the DesMoine Register interview with BO that the campaign tried to kill.  I thought sequestration was not going to happen.  But yet when asked about debt reduction in the interview here is BO's response:

THE PRESIDENT: Well, Rick, let me answer you short term and long term. In the short term, the good news is that thereÂ’s going to be a forcing mechanism to deal with what is the central ideological argument in Washington right now, and that is: How much government do we have and how do we pay for it?

So when you combine the Bush tax cuts expiring, the sequester in place, the commitment of both myself and my opponent -- at least Governor Romney claims that he wants to reduce the deficit -- but weÂ’re going to be in a position where I believe in the first six months we are going to solve that big piece of business.
