— Gabriel Malor

Happy Tuesday. It's a bit of a slow news morning. Mostly poll stuff that Ace and CAC already covered.

Romney's VMI speech last night was something to see. I thought it was better than his convention speech.

North Korea says it has missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland. Sorry 'bout that Washington, Oregon.

Hackers killed thousands in World of Warcraft, making for some rather amusing mass die-off videos.

A good method of preventing your political yard signs from being stolen. But see the "plot twist" in the comments.

Massholes have always been intolerant totalitarians. Who knew?

OTOH, the colony established by William Penn allowed more religious freedom, and Georgia was founded as a secular government under the Oglethorpe Plan, so it wasn't all colonies.

Rockmom's assessment of Patriot Act infractions is dead on. Anyone who reports the, ahem, banks receiving said donations to the Fed will be in line for a significant payout. Just spread the accusation wide enough, including press, and the results should proceed nicely. I bet Judicial Watch would looooove to play with this one. They just didn't want the uber state dictating an official religion.  The religious freedom part was that they wanted to practice in the good old way locally and felt that since it was relatively easy to go down the road apiece and set up your own town, it shouldn't be too hard to establish a place to practice your own religion.

Nowadays, if you don't live in the shadow of a mosque, you must be a religious bigot, because the Federal Government tells you so!

Liberals are worried that a "normal" law-abiding might succumb to the temptations of the dark side and thus they need to restrict almost every activity that a citizen might engage in, just to be sure.  They know that the criminals are already criminals, already have most of them registered to vote D, and believe that the existence of a substantial criminal class empowers the police state.

It is really a consistent world view, if you like that sort of thing!

46 9 On this day in 1635 Roger Williams was banished from MA thus proving that the colonies were not founded by people seeking religious freedom. They were founded by people seeking a place to establish a State run by their own relgion. +++++++++++ Well, true, on the whole. They started out that way in specifically Puritan colonies like Massachusetts Bay, but within 2 or 3 generations there was a migration to religious freedom due to the rapid influx of non-Puritans and the fact that God has no grandchildren. This change may have been part of the reason for the Salem witch hunts, in which some, like Cotton Mather, who still thought of themselves a Puritans, made a very foolish attempt to reassert their old authority and control. It was too late, however. The 18th century was not kind to Puritanism. Attendance in the churches was very low--5% by some estimates. Rival sects like the Unitarians and the Universalists began to appear, even in former Puritan enclaves and Congregational churches. Actually the Puritans were not quite the caricature we imagine them to be. They were from the English middle class and unusually well-educated for their time. They did not begin with religious tolerance, in part because of what was going on in England in the 1620s, but they tended to be tolerant by nature. So, as they say, it's complicated.

56 Julian Assange's supporters have been ordered to forfeit £93,500 in bail money after the WikiLeaks founder sought political asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

A court ruled on Monday that the payments must be made within a month by nine friends and backers who in 2010 pledged £140,000 to guarantee Assange would abide by bail conditions during a failed legal challenge to extradition proceedings brought by authorities in Sweden, where he faces allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Vaughan Smith, the former British army captain who hosted Assange at his Norfolk home while he was on bail throughout 2011, and had promised to pay £20,000 if Assange skipped bail, was ordered to pay £12,000, while Philip Knightly, a veteran Australian investigative journalist who exposed the British traitor Kim Philby as a Russian spy, was ordered to pay £15,000, £5,000 less than he originally pledged.

70 PA went R all through the 80s In this section of SE PA the 80's were good times economically. I remember when Ronald Reagan visited a local corporate center that was booming. That same corporate center today? Signs everywhere -- 50,000 feet, 100,000 feet, 200,000 feet available. Parking lots empty. Locally, the so-called stimulus money went to an internationally owned pharmaceutical which created zero jobs and to 'another road in the suburbs' -- though it was a major thoroughfare from jobs in the suburbs and Philadelphia residents in either cars or buses. No impact on unemployment rate from either. The 'hope and change' clingers of 2008 seem disheartened. I see political signs, but none for either R/R or 0bama. Just a name on the signs, no political affiliation mentioned. If pressed to make a guess for how PA will vote I'd say razor thin R/R - a county by county map would be all red except for Philly and Pittsburgh. Not sure if 0bama is going to garner enough dead people in those cities to overcome the 'burbs'.

80 But in those few minutes lots of people wander over to Doug Ross, Weasel Zippers and other internet points of interest True dat. I wandered over to Redstate where EE made a contribution to 0bama with a made up name, made up address in the Russian Federation -- all the information was bogus except his CC number. The transaction went through for three days -- until his bank rejected it. I was outraged at the foreign contributions in 2008 -- because I knew then it was going on. Four years later, I still can't believe it continues. But I guess the RNC had other stuff, like entertaining donors at strip clubs to deal with.

82 I have the Rasmussen update. Can Greg explain something to me? You see, today romneys spectacular polling day on Friday dropped off of the three day average. The day that single handily put him from -2 to +2. Obama then polled like a boss over the weekend. Wouldn't that mean that yesterday's numbers would have to equal Fridays numbers for the overall results to stay the same?

83 For the record, Doug Ross has replaced AoSHQ as the first site I check in the morning.  I forward his links roundup to my NYT-reading, CNN-watching friend.  That will last through the election or until she promises to vote for Romney.

86 81. Great improvement.

Someone explain the process how Boehner got elected by the House Republicans, and how to replace Boehner with another R-House-Speaker sooner than later.

"CSI Benghazi"
By Jed Babbin on 10.8.12 @ 6:11AM, The American Spectator
Futile and pointless best describe the FBI investigation of the consulate attack.

We can't know how the war will intrude on the remaining thirty days of the campaign, or even if it will. The third presidential debate, to be held on October 22, will focus on foreign policy. It will take Romney far beyond the issues he has spent his life thinking about. Will he -- can he -- be as prepared on those topics as he was in the first debate? Romney's positions on Afghanistan, Egypt, Israel, Libya and much more will have to be developed and focused between now and that debate. After omitting mention of Afghanistan in his convention speech, Romney said, "Our goal should be to complete a successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014. We should evaluate conditions on the ground and solicit the best advice of our military commanders." That's internally inconsistent. If we can't complete a "successful transition" in 2014 -- and we can't -- does he believe we need to stay until we can? Is that all he has to say about a war in which 2,000 Americans have died to no apparent purpose?

When signs used wood stakes, I secured mine (after numerous thefts) by screwing an eye hook into the bottom of the stake and looping a piece of heavy wire (think gate hook-gauge) through the eye. Two is better. Then hammered it in so the wires paralleled the stake.

When the thief tried to pull the sign, the wire spread out into the earth, stopping all movement like a fishhook barb, and I like to think he got a dozen or so splinters.

At least my signs stayed put after that.

91 #87  Jed Babbin is turning into a grumpy crank.   ANY policy Romney has on Afghanistan would be better than what we now have,  a twilight zone where we sort of fight but without goals or progress,  and where the ROE increase the risks to troops tremendously.

Babbin is a regular weekly guest on a local radio show in Indianapolis.  He is still PO'd that Romney got the nomination and cannot let it go.

Yesterday, Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez "won" reelection. Today, the White House is congratulating Venezuela on that outcome.

From the pool report, which details a gaggle held by White House spokesman Jay Carney:

-Carney said US congratulates Venezuelan people on its election, while noting the US has its differences with Chavez.

Really? What differences might Barry have from Hugo?

95 No strato jump yet...they're on a weather hold. I'm hoping it will still happen today....this is the only free day I'll have to watch it. Earliest launch is now 11:30 am MDT.

Also, comments are skewered again, which means poor Gerg won't get much of a chance to improve on his .000 batting average where political predictions are concerned.

"A good method of preventing your political yard signs from being stolen."

I could easily see kleptomaniacal Obama supporters (BIRM) stealing such a sign and feeling good about it - the other sign having equated the act with donating to (in their view) a worthy cause. Theft = donation. Sounds liberal to me.

So it looks more like a fund-raising gimmick to me.
