No Mark upon Her
Best-selling author Deborah Crombie's deeply atmospheric and twisting mystery is filled with deadly secrets, salacious lies, and unexpected betrayals. When a woman's body is found, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid finds himself heading a complicated investigation, for the victim was a high-ranking detective who had many admirers, and many enemies.
And thatÂ’s it for Thursday. Pretty much covered everything yesterday.

This article might explain heavy minority turnout, and also the depressed GOP turnout in some areas. What I think is that we are going to have to have full-time advertising on the net from now on, not just during elections. Otherwise we are going to go throrugh the same thin in 2016.

Let's rephrase that a bit.
Because conservatives couldn't bring themselves to vote for a liberal Republican who in their opinion wasn't going to be much different than the current occupant.
How many times did Romney agree with something Obama said he would do or was already doing (or claimed he was doing)?
Yeah. More than one is too many.
Don't anyone go psycho on me though because I understand why they stayed home. I dragged myself to the polls first thing and voted for him because he was a teensy bit better than what we've got now (and to stick it to the MSM).

Hello, again, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Another day back on the chain gang.
Today is the birthday of Yaphet Kotto (Kananga / Mr. Big in Live And Let Die)* as well as that of Lewis Stone, kindly old Judge Hardy in MGM’s Andy Hardy series. I don’t have any story about Kotto, and Rooney stories all tend to be the same – either he complains about his height, is running around after his next bedmate or has Judy Garland telling her butler “don’t let that asshole in here” when he popped by for a visit during his down and out years.
YesterdayÂ’s tales of sordid sex probably left a bad taste in your mouths, so let me try to give you something cheerier this morning. LetÂ’s talk about music:
Silent movies, as the cliché goes, were never really silent. There was always some accompaniment, whether a single piano pounding out a bit of chase music as Pearl White was tied to a railroad track or a full orchestra goosing Rudy Valentino along as he made love to Gloria Swanson. But when talkies came along, studio chiefs wondered – if there was music during a scene, wouldn’t the audience wonder who was playing? One director solved this problem by telling his chief, “You tell me where the camera comes from and I’ll tell you where the music comes from,” but not everybody was as quick on their feet.
In 1929, writer Morrie Ryskind has just completed the shooting script for the Marx Brothers movie The Cocoanuts. The day after he submitted it, director Joseph Stanley cornered him, noting that during certain scenes where there was music under the dialogue, he hadnÂ’t shown where it was coming from.
“What do you mean, where does the music come from? Where does it ever come from?” protested Ryskind. He stabbed a finger at the script. “Look, the guy says to the girl, ‘I’ve got something on my mind,’ somebody in the orchestra hits a note and they sing. That’s where the music comes from.” But Stanley only shook his head. “Audiences won’t accept that.”
Finally, after much wrangling, Ryskind agreed with Stanley to hire an orchestra that would sit in a bandstand and pretend to play during scenes in the movie where there was dialogue over music. But somehow, during all the rush to get the Marx zaniness on film, the cameramen forgot to get any shots of the fake band.
So as it turned out, the audience never did get to find out ‘where the music comes from’ in The Cocoanuts, and, as Ryskind said, “Nobody gave a damn, of course.”
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*and was any woman ever as bunk-worthy as Jane SeymourÂ’s Solitaire? Yum, yum.

I don't think any of us know until someone honest gets out there and does a real survey. We were expecting a wave and we got a kitchen faucet dribble.
Obama did worse, but it wasn't enough with his built in advantage of automatically getting NY and CA before the first vote is cast.

If you were a conservative Asian, you got barraged with 4 years worth of propaganda targeted to your group. Same with Hispanics, Indians, etc. So I can see how these GOP voters might have stayed home.
There isn't one answer for the loss, but a list of things which got Obama a few votes here, a few votes there. It ranges from targeted ads, MSM adoration, and Hollywood all the way to stealth religious bigotry being pushed under the radar, vote fraud, and intimidation. There is no one unifying theory, but a group of things all executed with the same goal in mind.

Minorities came out in large numbers because they see Romney and Republicans in general as an existential threat, period.
A great many GOP voters did not see the same in Obama.
There i no way to explain Romney getting fewer votes than McCain other than people did not see a conservative on the GOP ticket.
Ryan is good and all but he really is a one trick pony, its a great trick but after a while people want to see more than the woman getting sawed in half.
They want smoke and flash bombs and entertainment.
Every time I heard Romney/Ryan tell me Obama inherited a tough situation I just tuned out metaphorically.

Plus I can't believe that ole pinch face McConnell couldn't have pulled some tricks on harry also but he didn't because like Boehner, he believes in big government and he wants friends in congress in case he ever gets power and needs some help.
There are no conservatives in Government. They get elected and they go to DC but once there they get reprogrammed (unless they're already there like Brown) and out comes a brand new Congressman all shiney and concerned about "reaching across the aisle" and "bipartisanship" and "gridlock is bad for the country".

The move is part of TIÂ’s previously announced plan to refocus on faster-growing, more profitable areas of business.
It also means the Dallas-based chipmaker will discontinue its mobile business instead of selling it, spokeswoman Whitney Jodry confirmed.
The cuts amount to roughly 5 percent of TIÂ’s nearly 35,000 employees worldwide and 9,900 workers in North Texas. The company plans to notify affected employees by the end of the month and the layoffs will occur over the next few quarters, Jodry said.

Obamacare was a baked cake by the time the vote was taken and the procedural Kung Fu forced Brown into an up and down.
A Bill is not one vote it is a series of votes and Searchlight had 60+ the life of the bill basically.
Brown couldn't stop the train, and we were hoping that Harry Would have to run the whole gamut without filibuster proofing.

The Republican party has bigger problems than social conservatives and until they figure that out we will continue to get what we got on the 6th.

Those are the only two option? Either he's a stand-up conservative (who in their right mind ever argued that) or don't support him? There are exactly two reasons any conservative would have supported Scott: Was he better than Coakley would have been? Yep. Would he have been better than Warren? Yep. That was MA were talking about--a Tea Party Senator didn't get elected there and never will get elected there.

Gridlock is enshrined in the constitution and it's a good thing.
There are two legislative bodies composed of 535 people, a president and vice president.
That's 537 people who have to agree on bills and if a single person in the form of a president disagrees he can put the kabosh on the whole thing.
You couldn't get 500 random people to agree that blowjobs are awesome let alone if this or that legislation is good or not.
Unfortunetely our leaders think its their sworn duty to make legislation and create laws and in essence grow leviathan ever larger and more comprehensive.

If you were really struggling back then, you'd be more inclined to vote for the possibility of a job, rather than check and keep the benefits flowing.
Also, I remember to my mother (single mom; five kids; worked nights at Western Union and took in ironing during the day), being on welfare was the height of shame. It was the demarcation between respectable and trash.
Something tells me this mindset no longer exists.

For those who are bitching at Romney, go read that article in the Wall Street Journal. I don't think any of the candidates could have overcome that amount of propaganda. Obama supporters are indeed a cult, and they are like the old-tie Moonies, constantly trying to lure others in.
And as far as the depressed voter turnout, I think fear of losing what little help some get from the government WAS a factor for unemployed blue collar people. And no matter what Romney could have done, there was a constant reminder that "he is rich, rich, rich and YOU are not."
A serious study on GOP voters who didn't turn out is called for. I hope someone does it pretty quickly.

#74 - I think it was stated above that a bunch of things (Sandy, the MSM, fudged ec data, freeebies, low info voters, etcx) added up to turn a 2-3 pt R win into a 2-3 pt loss. That said I agree a bit with your point - R (and many of us) thought it was a 1980 repeat and all R had to do was look reasonable. In retrospect it was 2004 and he needed to take it to O more to bring out his base.
#81 - Sad story. I know several people who have been unemployed at least a year and were really counting on a R win to get the economy moving again who are not in good shape right now - I hope they don't go that far
I can understand GOP/conservative voters not being 100% behind R but sitting it out when faced with 4 more disasterous years of O just doesn't make sense

The House had long passed it. What happened was the Senate made changed, passed it on Dec 24th back to House to OK the changes which they did. There was a small prayer that the House would shoot it down because a lot of Democrats were opposed to the abortion stuff.
The Senate promised to "fix" that and those so-called blue dogs sold us out and they all voted to pass it as it was from the Senate.

with brown though, it was like with Boehner. He kept (and keeps even unto lately) saying sh!t that he should keep to himself.

These are not lazy people. These are people who have worked all their lives and they cannot find work. Many are in pockets of the country where they cannot sell their homes and relocate. What are you going to tell a 2nd generation coal miner in southern Ohio who lives in a small town? Who is going to buy his home if he moves? If he heads to the Bakken, he can't take his wife and kids because there is no housing. If he leaves his family, he worries they will be without protection in an area increasingly full of home invasions, meth dealers, etc.
So people get paralyzed, take the government check and EBT card, and hope like hell for better times.

Yeah, I know a lot sat it out (to my SoCon amazement) but do we know it Social Cons. EVERYONE I knew couldn't wait to get rid of that jackass.
I think the truth is more likely the ones who were afraid to lose their benefits....compromised principals for survival. Wouldn't be the first time.

As far as kneeing the guy who's the leader of the only branch we have control of: how so? He's kneecapping himself. He's another nice guy, honest (maybe) forthright and speaks his mind.
Those are not the qualities I want in a tough negotiator. I want a texas holdem poker winner who'll table talk, click his chips and snark to disrupt the other guys concentration. I want John McEnroe throwing his racket around and generally scaring the crap out of everybody. I want someone who walks in the room and everyone takes a step back.
I want him to walk up to choom boy, shake his hand, and quietly so nobody hears tells him his fly is unzipped. (he'll look and then feel stupid for doing so)
That's not John Boehner. John's the guy I want in charge of an evacuation or the aftermath of a disaster; cool, calm, someone you trust.

They are:
1. Free Shit.
2. Race.
3. Fraud.
The first we could not do anything about. Osama Obama had the machinery in place to dispense the goodies, and the eunuchs in Congress (who could at least have slowed the flow) wanted theirs, too. The second was also an unchangeable fixture, with decades of white guilt, mythology and affirmative action thrown in.
As for the third: the Republican Elites won't go after this (and, of course, neither will the big-shot pundits, all of whom are allergic to hard work and law enforcement), so they have already floated the "birfer" meme about it. I guess if they can't "see" it, it doesn't exist. But I would rate it at least equal to the other two.
So we get the ol' "Four More Years!!11!!" treatment. After only a week of it, I am more convinced than ever that none of us can imagine how ugly it will be when (NOT if) the SHTF.

To normal people who have real lives, politics is the art of getting done what you can get done with what you have at the time - and recognizing it.
To the purity brigade, politics it the art of sitting in the corner and sulking because you can't have everything you want.

The Articles would not have kept a strong union of the states intact long enough for us to become strong. Don't forget that England was the world power and could have picked off the weakest states without any difficulty, or just plundered us.
And you are pissed because the Articles would have allowed the Confederacy to secede. Of course the country would not have existed, so that's just an academic point.
By the way, I had a sazerac last night. You should try one.

It is a fundamental truism of economics that whatever cannot continue, will not continue.
I think this country is self-correcting and we'll fix it. Sure, we fucked up and lost an opportunity to do that, and I do not minimize this, but I think we'll get it right next time.
Of course, thanks to blowing this opportunity, we are now looking at 10-20 years to unfuck this mess thanks to JEF. However, it doesn't change my point. Sooner or later the pendulum will go the other way.

The fact of the matter is that we are all to blame, if we as a people would have paid attention along time ago we would have seen this coming.
Most of this boils down to our education system, and what it has done to us.
Getting that fixed if at all possible will take 20 - 30 years if not longer.

I'm not bashing them for being idealistic, just commenting on it. Also, they'd already defeated England by the time they were discussing the Constitution.
Although, I do not agree with Vic. I think the same forces that have corrupted our Constitution would have found a way to either destroy, or similarly corrupt the Confederation, too.
The primary problem, in both cases, is that the People fell asleep (or would have, in our alternate time-line) at the wheel. In particular, the 16th and 17th Amendment could be called the "anti-federalism amendments."

Obama received fewer votes this election to the tune of about 10 million.
Vote totals were down for the GOP as well.
Where did all of these voters go?
Romney/Ryan time and time again undid their message every time they said that Obama inherited a tough situation.
That translated to the economy, foreign affairs, etc.
It was Romney/Ryan's job to show why Obama has made things so much worse, they did not do that.
I really believe it was the vice Presidential debate that undid Romney/Ryan, here was their opportunity to hammer home their message with their most effective weapon in Ryan and he let JOE FUCKING BIDEN walk all over him.
When your opponent says he inherited a tough situation and your message is yes he inherited a tough situation but, and you don't hammer home the but part, well that's a recipe for a losing campaign.
And there was so much low hanging fruit for Romney/Ryan to hammer Obama over that it was just frustrating.
XL Pipeline.
Crony Capitalism.
War on Coal and energy production in general.
etc.
Romney/Ryan fought this campaign exclusively on the economy but they had a mixed unfocused message.
Also they squandered the opportunity to define their opponent at the convention.
Remember the 2004 convention speaker after speaker savaged, absolutely savaged John Kerry and John Edwards, SAVAGED!
They took those two to the wood shed to such a degree that on the final night a clearly drunken and shaken John Kerry held a press conference to stop the bleeding.
The message from this convention was a bunch of mush, mixed messages and love of hispanics.
Hispanics if you don't know have never given the Democrat Presidential candidate less than 56% of their vote. In 1988, two years after signing the largest general amnesty, the Dem. candidate received 70% of the hispanic vote.
So the moral of the story is moderation does not win, never has, never will.
And choose a message and hammer it home, do not equivicate or water it down.

Even after Yorktown we were not immune to military threats from England. We were still weak, and the idealism may have been the only way to keep interest in the creation of a lasting political system.
Even after the signing of the Constitution there were huge problems. Hell, Jefferson had to be convinced to spend money on a navy! Had the Articles not been tossed out in favor of a stronger central government I doubt we would have survived even 20 years.

The public schools created a generation of self-hating white kids.
Don't forget the all-pervasive media and its condescending attitude towards traditional America in general and while males in particular. How many commercials and shows portray them as bumbling idiots? Example: Miller Lite (excuse for) beer. I wonder who thinks I'd purchase a product that makes me out to be stupid? Sure, I may be in on the "joke," but the constant message over time isn't funny.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Superstorm Sandy drove the number of people seeking unemployment benefits up to a seasonally adjusted 439,000 last week, the highest level in 18 months.
The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly
applications increased by 78,000 mostly because a large number of
applications were filed in states damaged by the storm. People can claim
unemployment benefits if their workplaces close and they don't get
paid.
It's all Bush's Sandy's fault!!!! Amazing how a storm that affected a small part of the country caused the unemployment number to jump. And how are people unemployed due to a storm.

Each has their ups and downs. M-4gery and AR-15 is basically the same platform, both are very accurate. The AK will eat practically anything it is fed but is not quite as accurate. Are you looking to put the zombies down at long range, or is a couple of hundred yards good enough?

.308 will work out to 300 yards without any trouble. And it's a military round so it is very common.
Lighter bullets will work on varmints and small game, while the heavier loads will take down game as big as elk (with a well-placed shot).
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 15, 2012 05:24 AM (GsoHv)
Then AR-15. Although depends on how tight quarters are. In which case, M-4.
I like them just because I am familiar with them, so that's just me. Being able to assemble/disassemble in the dark or low light is a distinct advantage.
But tangos closer in than 300M, then AK-47, because its a larger round and accuracy matters less...lead volume matters more.

I currently have a hand gun, I'll probably pick up a second one for my wife (she says the XD feels a little to big for her. And she wants a pink one). I actually now have a plethora of long guns, including an old Sears & Roebuck .22LR (with something like a 5 round magazine), and a WW1 German rifle I can never remember the name of. Also a Remington 870, and a couple of other antique shotguns.
So, to all that fire-power, I need to add ammunition (unless I want to use them as very expensive clubs), and a semi-automatic long gun.
Here, I keep hearing that the Hi-Point carbines are a good option.

AK in .308. You might have to let them close to 200 yds depending on how good you get with it, but it will always go bang if it has cartridges and it's accurate to minute of asshole at 200 yards. .308 will take down any North American game animal as well.

If the storm really is to blame for generalized unemployment, then there should be a corresponding surge in IBEW work over the next year fixing all that fucked up electrical shit, and making the shit it'll be fixed with.
But wait...even shit like little electrical fitting, lock nuts, bushings, mud rings, etc that came out of IBEW shops in the past are all being made in China now.
