— Gabriel Malor Happy Friday.
I have some numbers posts first today... First, this dude looked at the statements of 2012 House candidates (so *all* potential members of next year's House of Reps) and found bimodality both between the parties and within the parties. Confirmation, if we needed it, that there really is a Right and Middle wing to the GOP (and also a Left and Far Left wing among the Democrats).
Second, this guy finds evidence in Ohio that Obama's early voting turnout is merely cannibalizing high-propensity voters that would have turned out anyway, while Romney's early voting is turning out low-propensity voters.
Third, Jen Rubin takes a peek at the Romney campaign's internals, which find the same cannibalization effect in Iowa.
I wrote yesterday at the NYDN that Romney has good reason to be confident in the home stretch. That still looks true.
Romney is outspending Obama on ads in every state that's seeing presidential advertisements this week. All told, Romney and GOP groups are spending $80 million on ads this week, compared to Obama and Dems, who are only spending $50 million.
I know I already posted this, but Rev. Lowery's racism is still bugging me.
A second judge has granted a Catholic-owned business a preliminary injunction against the HHS contraception/abortifacent mandate. The right first step, but neither case has a merits decision yet.
New Jersey utilities crews turned away out-of-state crews sent from Alabama to help with Sandy recovery because the Alabama crews were not unionized.
As you know, there will be a BLS jobs report this morning at 8:30. My guess is that, whether the numbers are good or bad, they won't do much to change the election. Certainly the September and August reports didn't. That won't stop the media (and the twitter commentariat) from spending a few breathless hours on it before SQUIRREL!!

#1 - ridiculous. Same type of crap has gone on in other disasters. And don't forget Davis-Bacon or whatever that law is that requires union wages on projects.

Good Morning, feeling a little more relaxed today. I took a break from it all yesterday and got a lovely way to expensive facial, and some girly things and had a few glasses of wine by the fire last night, it was lovely.
Now back to reality, 4 more days to go and I'm gonna stock up on the good wine this weekend and plan some yummy food for Tuesday.
Lets do this thing.

Are you ready for your Amazon purchases to be taxed by the UN?
A U.N.-sponsored conference next month in Dubai will propose new regulations and restrictions for the Internet, which critics say will censor free speech, levy tariffs on e-commerce, and even force companies to clean up their “e-waste” and make gadgets that are better for the environment.
When did the Senate approve this treaty?

The group hosting international election observers said Thursday that state officials in Iowa and Texas are needlessly blocking access to the decades-old process the United States already has agreed to, an official said Thursday.
Thomas Rymer, a spokesman for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, said the group will abide by election laws after officials in those states warned about possible criminal prosecution if the observers came within hundreds of feet of polling places.
There is so much wrong with this shit it screams. WTF does Europe have to do with this shit? And when did we ratify a treaty that superceded the Constitution that said the individual States will establish their election law?
We need to get out of the UN and abolish all treaties with them NOW.

Also, Bloomberg had better face some major political fall-out for continuing on with that marathon. NYers simply have got to wake up to this travesty. He needs to be mpeached, or recalled, or whatever. Scum.

The Gathering Dead
The zombie apocalypse has begun, and Major Cordell McDaniels launches an elite mission into New York City to rescue the one man who can stop the ghastly virus that reanimates the dead. But completing the mission becomes questionable when members of his slaughtered team become infected, their military skills intact.
And thatÂ’s it for today. Those of you who will not be here this weekend remember that we roll the clocks back 1 hour this Sunday.

New Jersey is dead to me now as a location I'll either visit or spend some tourist dollars in. When politics is more important to fucking repair crews then peoples lives then they can diaf until the people rise up and take back their lives. It's not the Republicans that are shoving unions down everyone's throat.
It's freaking cold here in SE Pa today. Since Sandy the overnight temp has dropped steadily.

Sorry JJ but if I remember correctly is "upgrade" was nothing more than the same stupid shit that Obama pushed through while they controlled everything. They called it "the smart grid" but what it is is crap to allow them to control local electricity.
As for what everyone else is screaming about, burring power lines. That would not have prevented losing power during flooding events. The transformers are still located above ground and will still get flooded out.
And it costs about $1M/mile to bury lines. Guess who will pay for that?

Cleland is now the second federal judge to temporarily block part of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 from being enforced against the religious owners of a family business. Weingartz was joined in his lawsuit, filed in May, by Legatus, a national association of Catholic business owners. Lawyers for the Department of Health and Human Services argued that granting exceptions for small business owners would interfere with the government's ability to implement the law.
---
Unlike exemptions for massive global corporations including McDonalds, or for the entire State of Nebraska, Those exceptions would not interfere with implementation, let alone funding the law.
"A family business" wouldn't succeed in court if only a small business. This case required a national association of business owners to fund and support. Even with the case, the outcome required a judge without a socialist-justice agenda, a judge not owned by Obama's masters.

The democrats are so into magical thinking that they think that making the number come out lower through accounting gimmicks will have some sort of effect. It will not have that effect for most voters.
And for the few who see it and think it is real, it will come to their attention that things have been so bad for so long that perhaps it's simply a fluke, and they will not really be impressed./

Good morning all. Pardon my rant:
Mayor Bloomberg wins the coveted Ray Nagin prize with his statement yesterday blaming the storm damage on climate change and saying it would be impossible to protect a harbor as large as New York City. The flooding is NOT unprecedented: while rare, New York City has had severe tidal flooding before. 1938's Great New England hurricane, and Hurricane Irene last year, showed that storm surges are a significant risk in the Northeast. Whether or not you believe in anthropogenic global warming, the city and state are responsible for not protecting critical infrastructure that was constructed in known flood prone areas.
As for the impossiblity of protecting a large harbor like New York's- check the Netherlands. Protecting critical infrastructure in New York would be much simpler. It would not be cheap, but governing is about making choices. The city knew if the water reached 13 feet, the subways and tunnels would flood. Hoping the water won't get that high is not a strategy.
I have great sympathy for those who lost property or family in this storm. I have no sympathy for political hacks like Bloomberg.
Ok, end of rant. Take care, morons.

The BIG story here is that we need a new scale to measure hurricanes. The old Cat1, Cat 2 bullshit does not take into account barometric pressure which is what is going to lift the hell out of the water. I'm sure a lot of people said, "Cat 1, no big deal".
I'll credit Joe Bastardi with the scale idea. He has a scale like that and pre-rated Sandy at a 5.1 iirc, while he had Katrina at ~7.6 -- again iirc.

Is it just me, or do these weeks seem to be getting longer and longer before Friday arrives? “Four days,” I have to keep telling myself. “Only four days more.”
Thanks for the news, Gabe and Vic. GOTV and ORCA and all that. God having mercy on us, on Tuesday TFG will get his ass kicked so hard heÂ’ll be coughing up shoelaces.
I was looking for a Bob Hope story, but there really arenÂ’t any. Hope was not, himself, a funny man, as almost all his material (even supposed ad-libs) were written for him. During the filming of the Road movies, both he and Bing Crosby kept their own gagmen on the payroll; when one got a funny line, the other told his writer to top it.
All of that leading to this story, which at least has Hope in it: in 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt held a party on the White House lawn to thank Hope, Cagney, Groucho and other Hollywood high-rollers for all they were doing to keep the troops entertained. Before the festivities began, the stars made a receiving line, where they each said hello to Eleanor as she made her way regally along.
Each of the stars did a little “turn” for the First Lady; Hope cracked a joke, Cagney hoofed a bit, and so on. After Eleanor shook the hand of Charlotte Greenwood, a six-foot comedienne famous for her funny dances, Greenwood did one of her famous kicks, a long leg soaring high over her head.
Groucho, standing next to Greenwood, puffed on his cigar and whispered into Eleanor's ear, “That’s what you could do, if you just put your mind to it.”
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

All four or five MA Morons were no doubt delighted by the Boston Herald this morning, which headlined "Republican" Scott Brown's latest attempts to make nice with John Kerry, his uber-smart "friend" and "colleague."
I know it's important to support anything that keeps liberal fuckwits like Lieawatha Warren out of office, but Brown is making that dam difficult with his talk about "working with Democrats," being "bipartisan" and all that good shit. Oh, hey, he's Pro-Wimminz, too!

Yeah. Brown gets my vote, but that's about all. He's a McCain in embryo - in fact, one local rag, The Irish Emigrant, just ran a picture of him at a fundraiser in Roslindale standing shoulder to shoulder with McStain. I can't stand the guy, but I loathe that smug bitch Warren.
Speaking of Warren - Doonesbury (yeah, I know) has a running storyline where one of the characters is a speechwriter for Fauxcahontas and is now struggling out of a hospital bed to help cinch the election. One reason I want Warren to lose is just to see Trudeau's shilling get rammed right back down his throat.

Hubby & I went to RR office to do some phone work & were pleasantly impressed with how disciplined & focused eveeryone was. A whiteboard displayed the total calls made from our office to date (260k as of Wednesday), as well as the goal for that day (7k) and the goal for the # of knocked-on doors for the day (1.5K) - which, for Lee County FL is pretty darned good.
The phones were programmed for calling the 954 & 561 area codes - Broward & Palm Beach counties, right in the heart of one of the Meccas of lefty-land.
I know it's anecdotal, but . . .If someone told you they were voting RR, you got to ring the bell by your phone, and those bells were going off A LOT. We sure were getting a whole lot of "I voted for Mitt," "My whole family voted for Mitt." "God bless you for what you're doing", and a few versions of "I'm on pins & needles until Election Day."
My first phone call went to voice mail and I'm sure glad I listened to it all the way though, because it was FUNNY. It started with the usual we're not home, blah, blah, blah, but ended with . . . "and for those of you who care, we're not voting for that Muslim socialist and neither should you."
Was I wrong to laugh heartily & tell the other volunteers?

I have an idea: throw the putative Republicans out of the party. Where are they going to go? That's right, the Dem.-Commies. Let that sad lot have the illegal immigration fight: our side knows it's illegal. Period. Let the heirs of the signatories to the "Dear Commandante" letter battle it out with Jeb Bush and his ilk. Just to take one example. That strategy would dilute the Pure Commie wing of the opposition. With any luck, they'll emigrate, or take the cure at Esalen and come back 'moderates', cured of their current, chronic toxic psychosis.

52+days vs. 1/3 a day
Obama's still puffin' smoke out his White House ass and will never come clean on his Gross Dereliction of Duty. Contrast Obama's total and perpetual failure of responsibility since 9/11/12 compared to the Libya military intelligence service response time of 8 hours and 20 minutes. After all, these were Americans, not Libyans; at least the Libyans showed up (after the fact) when the smoke cleared. Meanwhile, the mess of strewn "sensitive" US documents remains unsecured in Benghazi.
David Ignatius, WaPo:
The times listed are Benghazi time on the night of Sept. 11 and the morning of Sept. 12:
9:40 p.m.: A senior State Department security officer at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi called the CIA base, at an annex about a mile away, and requested assistance: “The compound is under attack. People are moving through the gates.” CIA officers at the base can hear the alarm, and a team immediately begins gathering weapons and preparing to leave.
At 5:26 the attack is over. Woods and Doherty are dead and two others are wounded.
6 a.m.: Libyan forces from the military intelligence service finally arrive, now with 50 vehicles.

There are people who actually believe this.
At one point, I used to recruit for Army officer programs. I was at a college fair in Pittsburgh once recruiting for Army nursing programs and I asked this....ahem...."urban" girl what here PSATs and SATs were. She told me she didn't take them, and wasn't going to take them, because they were "culturally biased."
I told her she wasn't going to get into any Nursing programs then, because every single one of them within a 300 miles radius required either SATs or ACTs.
But she was sure she was going to get in and it wasn't a problem.
I especially enjoyed her "attitude."
I'm sure that today she is, in fact, the Chief Nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital....in her mind.

rule exactly fit. If true, 0bama was a 'D' student in my book.
I certainly don't know about when TFG went to school, but GPA where I went (both HS and College) was each letter was a different whole number:
A (90+%) = 4
B (80 - 89%) = 3
C (70 - 79%) = 2
D (60 - 69%) = 1 (This only applied in college, my HS assumed < 70% = F)
F (< 60%) = 0.
That prevents the X25 rule from working, since 3 x 25 = 75 & 2 x 25 = 50.
Your GPA was an average of the points you got in each class, that "2.6" would normally indicate Bs and Cs. I think my dad managed to graduate college with a 2.3 or or something like that (he refused to study, apparently. My mom still makes fun of him for it).

The one that really used to choke me up was little girls on small sampans in the middle of shit river beneath the bridge exiting the Navy Base at Subic Bay.
They held out cone shaped scoop cups and yelled at sailors crossing the bridge to throw quarters or pesos. Some of the sailors would pitch them just out of reach to try to get them to fall in.
The river was an open air sewer (hence the name).

If you're referring to scores on the AP exams themselves, they've always had 5s. It has nothing to do with GPA. The AP tests are scored 1 to 5. Anything under a 3 doesn't count. If you get a 5, many colleges will accept that score as demonstrating mastery on a given subject and will either award you college credits when you get on campus, or will let you opt out of a core requirement or two.
If you're saying that schools (not the College Board) have jacked their grades to 5s for AP courses inside a given school....shit....that's just wrong.

Nowadays many of the schools give out 5s, also. They use them for AP classes and the like. More bullshit and blatant grade inflation (veritable printing of grade points) in order to cover the incompetence of the teachers.
I think they do that to distinguish an A in AP calculus from an A in choir.

Posted by: davidinvirginia at November 02, 2012 04:36 AM (qEkGZ)
My HS did that, and it wasn't "blatant grade inflation."
Imagine this. You're one of the brightest 10% of the kids in your (public) High School. You have two options- Honors/AP level courses which are harder, or regular level courses you can breeze through without working. Now, assuming they each give equal credit (so an A in a basic math class is the same, gpa-wise, as an A in Honors/AP math), which do you think most kids are going to take?
Most of them take the easier classes.
Well, to fix that, the school bumped up what each letter grade got you in an Honors course. A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, we skipped Ds, and Fs still got a 0. They tried leaving A as 4 points for a while (so both As and Bs = 4) but they realized that kids would then put in just enough effort for the B, and and not worry about making the A.
It's an incentive, and I don't really see anything wrong with it. They're not inflating grades, they're acknowledging that you're doing harder work than is actually required.

Many Colleges look at your GPA when considering you for admittance. Now, let's assume you're a hard-working kid who wants the best education possible, so you take as many Honors/AP level courses as you can. Now, you get As and Bs, maybe the occasional C. Down the street from you lives the smart slacker kid. He's as smart as you, but doesn't like doing the work. So he takes all basic classes and ends up with all As, with (maybe) the occasional B.
When you apply to colleges, his GPA is a full point to point-and-a-half higher than yours. Which of you is getting into the better school. Assuming neither of you apply to Ivy League schools, his GPA is better, he probably graduated "higher" in the class than you, etc.
Now, this isn't about "fairness" but about human nature. It doesn't take very long for the smart kids to realize they're getting screwed if they take the harder classes but don't get any tangible benefit from it.

This happened at my HS back in the day. The kids who finished #1 and #2 did the bare minimum amount of required math and science; not only that, they did the regular level (not even advanced). The kids who finished #3 and #4 took four years of math and science, advanced and AP level every year. They all had A averages but because of the way the grades were calculated the two who took the more demanding classes actually had lower GPAs.

FILL IN THE BLANK Paper Ballot Trail
Every elementary school student learned how to take a multiple choice test. Every national examination is conducted with fill in the blank pages.
No obligatory training necessary. It's offensive to have the election volunteer accessing my computer ballot for me. What the hell? I already registered, already checked in at the poll, proving my registration and signing the entry forms before being escorted to the computer to be granted access via my issued ticker tape information which the volunteer keeps. I don't like it at all.

You can take a standardized AP test. But, at my HS, not everyone took AP. There was instead the "honors" track. You basically took the same courses as the AP kids, and had to get the same grades to pass, but you didn't take the end-of-semester (or end-of-year) test. you also, coincidentally, saved your parents $200 - $300 bucks per course.
A lot of kids took that option, because they couldn't afford the payment for the AP courses. And they didn't get anything for higher grades if they didn't get a boost in what their letter grade was worth.
I know several people who graduated with 4.0 GPAs because they elected to take the easier courses (and, coincidentally, party 'til they were blind drunk- and then often go muddin' -every weekend) and never did any more than the bare minimum effort.
Had that been "the way" to get a 4.0, no one would have taken Honors courses, and the only ones who would have taken AP courses were the kids who were looking at the Ivy Leagues in the first place. That's bad for myriad reasons.
It's not perfect, but a- your SAT means a lot more than your GPA, limiting any "damage" an inflated GPA is going to do, and b- nothing is.
The world works the way the world works. People will get rewarded for their effort. Either that, or they'll cease putting in effort. If you want the smart kids to push themselves, you've got to give them something in return, and "oh, you'll get into a better college later" isn't going to do it.

That story about the non-union Alabama workers being turned away from the Sandy relief efforts by the unionized locals pisses me right the hell off.
I pray that the people in the affected areas are able to return to some semblance of normalcy soon, without any further loss of life or property. But I also dearly, DEARLY hope that some of them will open their eyes and wake up to reality: the government isn't Mommy and Daddy, and unions only care about themselves. I'm sure any individuals who DO figure this out will be in the minority. Pretty much none and none. There might be 2% out there who still can't decide. Half of those will vote for Romney, the other half won't vote.
If you can't support Obama at this point, you won't change your mind.
The effect of this number psychologically is worse for Obama than if it had spiked up. It reinforces that the next 4 years will be like the last 4 years. More of the same.

My school basically had 3 ways you could do that level of course work. You could do the Honors course- which was all the same coursework and homework, but you took different tests. You could do the AP course work, but not take the AP tests- again, same coursework, but you took a different end-of-semester/end-of-year test than the Honors kids. Then there was the "full" AP course. That's what cost money, because "admin fees" or something. (Semi-rural Texas, it might have just been a way to avoid cranking everyone else's property taxes).
A lot of kids took the Honors course, and more than a few took the full AP course. Almost no one opted for the middle option.

Optically scanned ballots seem to me to be the most open and transparent method of voting. Scanner technology is mature, easy to use, and provides a tangible paper trail for confirmation of votes cast and supports recounting by machine or hand. It also does not provide any easy way to link actual vote to the voter (useful plus in union areas).
I know enough computer geniuses that I would never trust a computer voting system that gets used only every other year or so, is tested only in the company lab, and that has proprietary code.

It would also be interesting -- to say the least -- for some of the NJ folks to realize that building houses on sandbars is not an optimal solution to the housing problem, no matter how nice the view.
When I lived in CA, it always enraged me that the liberal elites living in Malibu would get gubmint help to rebuild after each regularly scheduled landslide/storm/fire/earthquake inflicted heavy damage on the area. Some of that applies to the East Coast equivalents, too.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers stepped up hiring in October and the jobless rate ticked higher as more workers restarted job hunts, a hopeful sign for a lackluster economy that has dragged on President Barack Obama's reelection chances.
Employers added 171,000 people to their payrolls last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. The government also said 84,000 more jobs were created in August and September than initially estimated.
The jobless rate edged a tenth of a point higher to 7.9 percent, but that was due to a surge of workers back into the workforce. Only people who have recently looked for a job can count as unemployed.
A surge of people back in the work force. Reuters is writing comedy now

On being turned away as not good enough "on principle" by NJ Union, I doubt the nonunion volunteers from Alabama were looking to be paid for their help. The volunteers were by no means "scabs" let alone immigrants looking to relocate to NJ adding to the State's unemployment problems.

NOW, the government is threatening to force the company to keep them open (even at a loss to the company) because of what the closure would do to the electric grid.

According the the polls, even with this Rasmussen number, Romney still wins a D+3 turnout by 2 points, and an Even turnout by over 4 points.
What Rasmussen is really saying is that with a D+3 turnout, the race is tied. If Obama can get a D+3 turnout in this environment, I will be pretty surprised.

Yup. Diagnosed at age 5. (I'm 31 now and in great health) I honestly don't know if a Military career would have worked. I don't know if I could have done it. I'm honest with myself about that. But the medical stuff does close a lot of doors. While I was in law school, I figured out that lawyers are complete and total fucking assholes, are specifically taught to be that way and that I didn't want anything to do with it. So I started checking into alternate career paths. One that I was very interested in, and my wife encouraged me about, was the FBI. But again, law enforcement is a no-no for me.
*shrugs*
Honestly, I'm not bitter and if it seems that way, well, then I'm expressing myself poorly. I'm immensely grateful for the life God has blessed me with. Good job, good family, health as good as it can be. I just get annoyed by people who try to pigeonhole everyone into their idea of what must be. That's the road to a state-run society.

Dave in Fla, I have a question about the polls, but I don't know if there is an answer.
Some polls were showing R winning Ind.'s by wide margins while still losing a state.
What if some or most of those Ind. were tea party types who are a sure vote for Romney and were Republicans in the past? As opposed to voters who were in the middle or formerly on the left.
Not sure how to tell unless the voter id changed in a state from d/r/i of 30/50/20 to 30/50/20 or something.
Anywho, I hope the Ind. votes are actually new votes, not just a reshuffling of the Not-Lefties Party.

A lot and lot of people would be better off skipping four years of college and the 30-40k in debt. Go find some entry level job, go to the gym regularly, and take personal enrichment courses and get a library card.
I would argue that this applies to women even more than men. The idiocy of modern feminism has led to a campus life that is actively destructive to young women, and the increasing credentialism associated with more and more young women getting college degrees means that they are shrinking the pool of suitable male suitors. Like it or not, most women still want a man who makes more than them and has more education. Only now they're all fighting for fewer and fewer men with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree.

#530 - hopefully a small Sandy bump (aided by Christie slobbering) As NJ/NY drag on and Benghaize dribbles outs (think today's job number won't have mujch impact)
If we think voters are mostly decided this shouldn't have an impact

"Let's rally around the President in this time of devastation!"
Devastation is missing three out of four weekly tee times. Rally to me babies.

I'd like to think that one is a done deal for Romney, but nobody is talking about it.

Screw the government. Shut'em down permanently.
The smart grid should be able to handle it with all of the solar panels and wind turbines wheeling excess capacity.

Re the 2.6 GPA thing, back in my day:
90 - 100 = A = 4 points
80 - 89 = B = 3 points
70 - 79 - C = 2 points
65 - 69 = D = 1 point
Under 65 = F = 0 points
Average the points together, weighted by the number of credit hours in that class (i.e. an "A" in a 4 credit hour science class carries more 4X more weight than an "A" in a 1 hour P.E. class.)
A 2.65 GPA is a "gentlemen's C" average, not even C plus.

The Hurricane coverage has helped Obama. If these numbers hold, Romney is toast. If we lose this, the GOP needs to really rethink how to appeal to the electorate.

Benghazi has had no effect on Obama. This is not the silver bullet. Chris Christie has swung this election to Obama. The media is engaged on a blackout on the devastation in NY/NJ.

I don't know internals and such, but can give you basic anecdotal evidence. Tons of Obama signs and bumper stickers 4 years ago. This go round, save for the majority black neighborhoods, very, very few Obama signs and far more Romney signs than McCain signs. Very few bumper stickers for either side; I know the R-R HQ had an issue getting them in, so I think that's a supply issue
The huge Romney-Ryan signs are up at a lot of businesses as well, everything from a car place to a storage unit facility to a coffee shop. I have seen exactly 1 large Obama-Biden sign and that's at... drumroll... Obama campaign HQ in the city near me.
I take nothing for granted, but I do not see how this state goes for O after the huge turnaround this state took in our elections in 09 and 10, respectively and considering the threatened military cuts. They would destroy VA's economy (besides the bases, we have large shipyards here too).
I am far less certain about the Senate race. For some strange reason, seemingly otherwise sane people have a deep adoration for Governor Eyebrow (aka Kaine) even though he hiked taxes, his solution to our budget woes was to close rest areas, and he spent a good 2 years + doing absolutely squat for this state while he was busy doing his "Pick me! Pick me!" begging to be Obama's VP pick in 2008 and then later the DNC chair.

I
don't understand how some well-meaning Democrats can still align
themselves with the most despicable people who still support Obama. This video was an eye-opener to me:
