— Gabriel Malor Happy Monday.
Speaker Boehner and President Obama met over the weekend to discuss the fiscal cliff. No progress reported.
Drew wrote up Sen. Corker's idea that the GOP give in on tax hikes for those making more than $250,000. While I totally disagree with Corker, I'm surprised at the opprobrium he's getting over this. After all, his proposal, as summed up by Drew, sounds a lot like what conservatives have been saying:
Step 1: Unconditional surrender to Obama and the DemocratsStep 2: ???
Step 3: Massive entitlement reform that neither Obama nor any Democrat wants.
Only the particulars of the third step appear to be different. Conservatives have it something like, "Step 3: American voters realize that Obama and the Democrats' plan was terrible and vote in Republicans conservatives to do massive entitlement and tax reform that neither Obama nor any Democrat wants."
China's largest auto parts manufacturer just bought the bankrupt, taxpayer-funded A123 green battery maker.
The F.C.C. calls on the F.A.A. to allow passengers to use electronics during take-off and landing.
Something's up in Pakistan; quite a few Al Qaeda leaders have dropped dead in the past week and a half.
Yet another Romney candidacy postmortem, if you're still into that sort of thing.

And here we are at the beginning of another week, Moron Nation. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I really hate driving to work at 5.30am on a cold, rainy December morning. Yes, I know, I know – be grateful you’ve a job at all, even if you could make more staying home and being one of the Obamajugend’s Strength-Through-Laziness brigade.
Well, letÂ’s talk Old Hollywood, shall we?
Louis B. Mayer was a multitalented man, but above all a master manipulator - as an actor, he was the equal of any of MGMÂ’s stars. Here's a story that shows off his manipulation and cynicism in equal measure; rather than paraphrase, I'm quoting directly from the source, Mayer and Thalberg: The Make-Believe Saints by Samuel Marx.*
"The studio was disrupted. . .when newly inaugurated President Roosevelt closed the country's banks, declared a moratorium and made it impossible to cash checks. It served to spotlight the nation in crisis but added fears of a greater depression in the years ahead than those just past. Film companies, too, had suffered from diminishing returns, for people with little money on hand stopped going to the movies. The heads of the studios began a series of meetings to discuss the situation. A drastic decision to effect stringent economies resulted.
"Assembly was called in the Thalberg projection room. It overflowed with stars, writers, directors and department heads. The reason for the meeting was no secret. All the Hollywood studios chose that day to ask their employees, even those bound by contract, to accept a 50 percent cut in salary. It was needed, they claimed, because conditions throughout the country threatened to force them into bankruptcy and close their doors forever.
"The group at MGM sat unhappily or nearly twenty minutes before Mayer entered, his face stubbled and his eyes red, as if his nights had been as sleepless as his days were unshaven. He began with a soft utterance: "My friends. . ." Then he broke down. Stricken, he held out his hands, supplicating, bereft of words.
"Lionel Barrymore spoke up huskily. "We all know why we are here. Don't worry, L.B. We're with you."
"Ernest Vajda** was not with him. "I read the company statements, Mr. Mayer," he said. "I know our films are doing well. Maybe these other companies must do this, but this company should not. Let us wait; there's no reason to cut our pay at this time."
"Then Barrymore, with his commanding, stage-trained voice, drawled, "Mr. Vajda is like a man on his way to the guillotine, wanting to stop for a manicure."
"The assemblage laughed and applauded. Mayer beamed.
"Actress May Robson*** rose to her feet. "As the oldest person in the room," she proclaimed, "I will take the cut!"
"Almost as if prompted, a child actor jumped to his feet. "As the youngest in the room, I will take the cut!" Mayer asked them to vote if they were willing to slash their incomes in half, "for no more than eight weeks and I, Louis B. Mayer, will work to see that you get back every penny when this terrible emergency is over!"
"Deeply moved, many shouted their willingness and when Mayer called for a vote, the pay cut was approved.
The group dispersed and I was a few steps ahead of Mayer and Thau as we crossed the iron bridge to the front-office building. Oblivious to the fact that I could surely hear him, he asked the talent expert, "How did I do?""****
And there we are. Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*an MGM producer; also discoverer of Elizabeth Taylor.
**an MGM screenwriter best known for The Barretts of Wimpole Street
***an actress known for her 'old-lday-with-a-heart-of-gold' roles; played the Queen of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland and Aunt Polly in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
****need I add that Mayer himself never took the paycut and no-one got their lost wages back?

"What is the expected outcome of this action?"
I don't see anyone asking this question about anything going on.
Examples:
Obama: Raise taxes on the evil rich!
Me: What is the expected outcome of this action?
Some conservatives: Refuse to raise taxes and go over the cliff!
Me: What is the expected outcome of this action?
Other conservatives: Let Obama have the tax increase on the rich.
Me: What is the expected outcome of this action?
We get nowhere when people start in with Crying Boehner, they're gonna cave, they are only interested in themselves, etc. If you have an action that you think should be taken, then tellme what the expected outcome is!

That's how the Framers envisioned it. The Senate represents the states' interests to the federal government, and the House represents the people's interests. All of this has been bastardized of course, by the loathsome swine we call 'politicians'.

I will say that our whines are beginning to resemble those of more powerful voices. A small bone of hope, if you will.
Without radical changes in spending, our currency will collapse. This isn't a guess, it's an immutable fact. The credit bubble will collapse just as the dotcom and housing bubbles did.

Action: Politicians stand up for what they believe.
Expected outcome: Let the chips fall where they may.
Our problem is that the Dems are being completely honest about what they want (i.e. class warfare, let the rich eat worms), and the R's are lying about all of it.
If you don't really believe higher taxes are NOT the problem, then give in. Let Obama have what he wants. If you do believe it, stand up to the tyrant, and go to the gallows with your head held high.

are you aware that on the other side they vote for whatever retard they present? It doesn't matter if they think the shit bama is too leftwing or too extreme or too incapable. Retarded as they are they double down on stupidity.
By leaving the R you are playing their game because they will use it for saying gop is the party of extremists (when in reality you are leaving for the opposite reason).
Politics is about perception. This kind of stuff gives the perception of a losing party more than losing the elections.
A lot of gop representatives are below standards but switching to the side where low standard is the norm doesn't seem very bright.

Something's up in Pakistan; quite a few Al Qaeda leaders have dropped dead in the past week and a half.
So is it a covert assault by another extremist faction that wants to get rid of the competition, an internal revolt wherein lower rung members of al Qaeda want to climb the ladder to positions of power, or is it an outside force that's doing it? I doubt it's us; Obammy's too fond of his drone strikes and this is way too subtle for him. Maybe India?

Apparently, you have never watched the political wrangling over the BRAC list. Sure, the military could make its procurements more efficiently if given free reign and absolute support from its civilian bosses. That never happens. Oh, no! You can't close the base in my district. We'll lose jobs. Oh, no! You can't do away with this weapons system. We'll lose jobs...and so on. The use or lose budgeting doesn't help matters either.

Big mistake for the GOP because it will take away the tax issue as part of their platform. Nobody believes them now. When this is done, voters really won't have any idea what the GOP stands for.
What will they run on next time- how bad four, no wait, eight years of Obama has been?
Yeah, that's been a real winner- hasn't it?
Let Obama- own it? You are kidding, correct?
Because he also owns our entire fiscal situation.
But it's Republicans fault because they can't explain to people how one-third of the government can't force Obama, the Senate and over 200 Democrats in the House into a deal.
So take your biggest leverage off the table which will get real entitlement cuts then comes back next year with what? Your dick in your hand?
Dopes.

Well the left and horryweird but I repeat myself have finally succeeded in breaking the social contract beyond recognition.
I am not a man of infinite means and I was told that my job for the opportunity to go as far as I can is to begrudge no person their fairly won gains and that society as a result will not begrudge me mine.
Work hard, be honest, and sooner or later you will find your way.

now look around and tell me that is what we see, and for the real kicker that that is what barky and friends are trying to render.

There's that, too.
There's only one plan on the table, with a reasonable chance of success, which includes spending cuts, too- the Fiscal Cliff. And since we know that what we have is a spending problem, not a "revenue" problem, then that's the plan it is practical to support.
Our pragmatism brigade ought to be all over that one.

Same here. But in upstate SC, it's reeeeeaaalllly rare. Two years ago, we had a snow on Christmas day. It was glorious. But I was told it was the first time this area had a Christmas snow since 1963. We've been unusually balmy this December. Today is a high of 72. As an Ohio girl, I don't like it. Nosiree.

What is the alternative? Let everything expire? We're eventually going to give in our middle class tax cuts. That, too, is certain. Why? Because we like tax cuts. We would prefer them for everyone, but we'll take them for the middle class alone. If we do it before they expire, there's still some room for PR to work. If we do it after, we're "holding hostage the middle class for our banker and billionaire buddies."
Forget the PR war. Republicans won't win it anyway. They could have the RP version of a Royal Straight, and they'd still manage to lose to Democrat's Jack High.
But we have to ask- are "we" aiming for political advantage, or trying to do something actually to help? If we're just aiming for political advantage, then you're right- let's help the Democrats.
If we're trying to do something that might help, then what has to be cut is spending. We have a spending problem, not a "revenue" problem. But if we manage to maintain the Bush tax rates, even all of them, but certainly if it's just the "middle class" (which is as much class-warfare rhetoric as "the rich"), we ALSO stop the automatic cuts.
The only plan on the table which includes cuts is the Fiscal Cliff. Thus, avoiding the Fiscal Cliff- by any of the plans currently on the table- is actually worse than going all Thelma and Louise.

Maybe conservatives should form their own party. Hear me out though. I realize that a conservative party and a GOP would both be in the minority to the Dems. But together, they could still be in the majority. However, since conservatives appear to be the minority within the GOP, if the GOP wants to retain power, then conservative party members can caucus with the GOP, but in return, get back seats on committee, leadership positions, etc.
Another alternative is for conservatives to not vote for Boehner for speaker. If he doesn't get enough votes, he's no longer speaker. We need to clean the GOPs Congressional leadership ranks from Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, etc. Need someone with some intestinal fortitude who will actually make a stand.

Some analysis
2012 Budget: 3.9 Trillion
2012 Taxes: 2.5 Trillion
2012 deficit: 1.4 Trillion
Taxes need to rise 36% on all brackets to cover deficit.
The top two tax brackets would need to rise 90% the other brackets could be left unchanged.
The 33% would become 62% and the 35% would become the 67% tax brackets.
A person making $178,650 would see their tax burden rise from $58,954 to $110,763 his after tax income would fall from $117,696 to $67,887 and that is before the states get through with him.
A person making $388,350 would see their tax burden rise from $135,992 to $260,328 his after tax income would fall from $252,358 to $128,022 and that is before the states get through with him.
You would still not have a surplus. You would just break even.
------------------------------
Federal Debt: 16 Trillion
If taxes are raised 45% on all brackets to 4.6 Trillion you would have a surplus of 700 billion
The top two tax brackets would need to rise 125% the other brackets could be left unchanged.
The 33% would become 74% and the 35% would become the 79% tax brackets.
A person making $178,650 would see their tax burden rise from $58,954 to $132,201his after tax income would fall from $117,696 to $46,449 and that is before the states get through with him.
A person making $388,350 would see their tax burden rise from $135,992 to $306,954 his after tax income would fall from $252,358 to $81,396 and that is before the states get through with him.
It would take 23 years to pay off the debt.
You would have also enslaved and destroyed the productive class.
This is not really hard to explain or make anyone understand.
Our leaders are not leaders they merely look for political advantage.
Remember the fiscal cliff was Boehners grand bargain because he did not want to fight the debt ceiling battle. He mad the calculus that Obama would lose the election, he calculated wrong. Now he does not want to fight or argue principles over the fiscal cliff, he is going to make another grand bargain whereby he loses now to win later.
WE HAVE SEEN THIS ONE BEFORE!
