— Gabriel Malor Happy Tuesday.
Andy sent some old posts from back in the 2011 debt ceiling debate. Here's one from me, one from Drew, and one from me again. I'd honestly forgotten that we've been having this "Let it Burn" debate for quite a bit longer than just the past month:
Purists insist that the Cut, Cap, and Balance plan that passed the House (thank you, Speaker Boehner) is still viable, though Reid shot it down in the Senate, but there is no reason to believe that is the case. The Senate won't vote for it and the President won't sign it. And leveraging the threat of economic calamity isn't changing that. What might change that particular stalemate would be to push past the August 2 (or is it August 10?) deadline, let our AAA rating be lost, let federal disbursements be disrupted, and use the actual economic calamity as leverage for CCB and the Balanced Budget Amendment. That is the strategy that the purists are suggesting now. Of course, there's no reason to believe that Republicans will not be blamed in whole or in part for this "Let it Burn" plan and it has the smell of desperation about it. While it may be fun to imagine using economic Armageddon to get everything we want without having to compromise on anything, they're playing with people's lives and livelihoods in a particularly cynical and unprincipled manner.
And here's RD saying the final debt ceiling deal wasn't a capitulation crossed with Ace, who said it was a capitulation.
In other words, doesn't seem like much has changed, except this time the GOP is having to negotiate against both itself and President Obama rather than itself and Senator Reid. You will recall that back then Obama was taking a much more hands-off role.

Sorry, that strikes me as rather petty. Like the beauty pageant runner-up who suddenly finds herself thrust in the spotlight because the winner could not fulfill her obligations:
Oh no! It sure is warm here under this spotlight, I better eat more chocolate, even though it's going straight to my thighs.

See at least that represents 3 dimensional long range thinking on the Democrats part.
Let the Bush tax cuts expire for everyone then re-instate them and claim them as the Obama tax cuts.
See while the Democrats are implementing Shermans march to the Sea on everything in sight, the Republicans are purging conservatives from committees.

Healthcare has always been affordable.
You can get a policy for as little as $150.00 dollars a month for a single person or $450.00 for a family.
Now these are not the Cadillac plans that our Senators and Congressmen have but it's healthcare.
Some people pay more than $150.00 for cable television and Dunkin Doghnuts coffee.
Another thing I never ever hear anyone talk about is this, if healtcare is so expensive then how much should it cost?
How much should a routine checkup cost and what should it cover?
How much should a knee replacement surgery cost?
etc.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.
Here are a couple of quick stories to get your day off – I hope – to a good start:
In 1936, when director Michael Curtiz was casting The Charge of the Light Brigade, David Niven was among a number of actors testing for the role of leading actor Errol Flynn’s friend. When he arrived at the casting call, Niven found a dozen other actors also ready to go and settled down to wait. By the time six of the hopefuls had been heard and dismissed, everything Niven had hoped to do had already been done and his mind was a blank when Curtiz called out, “Next man!”
Niven was led out by an assistant and introduced to Curtiz and an understandably tired Olivia de Havilland.
“Where’s your script?” Curtiz barked.
“You mean those four pages I was given for the scene, Mr. Curtiz? I’ve learned it. I don’t have the script with me. It’s in my dressing room.”
“I asked you where it is!” Curtiz cried. “Now run and get it!”
Niven hesitated. His dressing room was at the other end of the studio. It was 100 degrees in the shade. The soundstage wasn’t air-conditioned. And after witnessing six other actors, Niven figured he had no chance. “Fuck you,” he snapped. “You run and get it!”
Curtiz threw his script to the ground. “Dismiss the others,” he cried. “This man gets the part!”
Now, letÂ’s go back to 1934, when Paramount was releasing a B-picture called Search for Beauty. The studio publicity department decided to invite theater owners across the country to advertise for the most beautiful girl in their town. A committee of judges would select the most beautiful of the local winners and the lucky girl would get a Paramount contract.
Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, George Burns and Gracie Allen were named as judges, but their names were strictly for publicity; choreographer LeRoy Prinz would actually make the choice. As it turned out, thousands of pictures of local lovelies poured in from across the country. Stunned by the numbers, Prinz told his assistant, “Just throw the pictures up in the air and throw out the ones that land face down. When you get to the last ten, call me.”
LePrinz’s assistant did as he was told. When the choreographer finally sat down to select from the final ten, he looked over the pictures and read a bit of information on each one, but simply grew confused. “Well, hell, I’m not going to bother with all this,” he thought, and began throwing those ten pictures in the air until finally only one landed face up. She was a cowgirl from Texas named Clara Lou. Paramount signed her and changed her name to Ann Sheridan.
Years later, Sheridan and LePrinz were at a cocktail party. “Annie,” the choreographer asked, “do you know how you got into this business?” Sheridan, a funny woman with a marvelous sense of humor, said, “I figured it was because you had the hots for me, since I started out as one of your chorus girls.”
Prinz laughed and told her the story of the pictures. “Yours was the last one to land on its back,” he finished.
“Of course it was, you S.O.B.,” she giggled. “And I’ve been on my back ever since!”
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

If you're still looking for some stocking stuffers or cheap shit for yourself and giving Ace free money at no extra cost to your Amazon is running some lightning deals over the next couple of days (there was one Monday).
http://tinyurl.com/b68y3hf
Highlights for today's deals include a Johnny Weismuller Tarzan movie colectionincluding Tarzan And His Mate, , A Bette Davis movie collection, a Gary Cooper movie collection, Harry Potter Complete Collection bluray set, Looney Tunes Golden Collection volume 1, Back To The Future Trilogy on bluray, War Horse bluray and a seven movie Marylin Monroe collection on bluray.
Other deals, which you can see here http://www.blu-ray.com/ include Lord Of The Rings extended editions on bluray for $40 bucks, the four movie Alien Anthology for $30, the X-Men Trilogy for $20, Planet Of The Apes saga for $20 (though it's part of a lightning deal tomorrow so will be a couple of bucks cheaper) and Doctor Who seasons five and six for $24 each among many others.
Also worth noting is Downton Abbey for $32 and let me tell you the price on this one keeps bouncing up and down. Yesterday it was $30, then it shot up to $38 and now it's back down (usually Amazon sells it for $45 or $50) so if you know anyone who would love to have it better get it now.

I am currently retired and on my employers retirement insurance. No complaints, even though it is a PITA HMO. Looking at what is covered, I wish there was a way now, and even when I was working, to eliminate what I do not want or need to be insured. Chiropractor, don't want it. Delivery room, that ship sailed a long time ago. Psych treatments, I'm goofy, not crazy. Drug rehab, I made it this long without it.
But all of that stuff is covered. Just pay for and let me pay for what I want and need.

I understand the intrinsically dictatorial nature of the Rabbit People. As I noted at AG, that is precisely why I give sensitivity-driven discourse no respect whatsoever. I don't care if you were raped every day of the year and twice on Mondays by the family cat, after which your father killed you with a knife and danced on your grave. Your personal victimization grants you neither moral authority nor intellectual credibility, much less any form of veto on what others are permitted to think, say, or feel. XXXXXXXXX will always be a bastion of heterotopic discourse; it would not be unreasonable to think of it and Alpha Game as the Wild Hunt for Rabbit People.

Amazon has some strange formula that determines what price you see out of all the sellers they are promoting. I've had it happen many times that I'd look up an item, go away and do some research to see how badly I want it, only to come right back in an hour and see a wildly different price. Like the first time it will be $32.50 and the second time $21.99.
Then when you click on whatever takes you to the expanded list for that item on all sellers, the price you are looking at is gone, and you get to select the seller with the best price. Even Amazon shows up with different prices from the first one you'll see. Bugs the hell out of me.

"I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.
God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.
Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without the thought of quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus."Posted by: Scanner Dan at December 11, 2012 04:02 AM (h5CN9)

Jean Arthur.
Oh, man. I had such a crush on her in Only Angels Have Wings. A very underrated Cary Grant movie. Also notable for Rita Hayworth's first time on screen.
Speaking of Rita, did you know her real name was Margarita Carmen Cancino? Her dad was Spanish and mom Irish. She was a dancer in Tijuana for a while; I know I've got a couple of non-racy stories about those days somewhere. I'll see if I can find one for tomorrow.

Just a thought, but has anyone done any research/polling into the political alignment of those who voted in these wins? Were there more independents voting republican? More libertarian? What about republican voters, themselves? What were their major concerns in these
elections? What state and local issues gave them the passion to vote? Was it TEA Party influences?
Has anyone looked into any of it with any discipline, who was not just spouting an unsupported opinion?
Something to investigate and mebbe apply to the lessons to the national level?
Alla this hand wringing, sackcloth and ashes stuff isn't helping. You' be better off setting up neighborhood tactical teams and doing some training and prepping.

Having had to work with the Saudis on the maintenance of armored equipment, I would echo that. There is just something about Arab culture that seems to rule out the development of a work ethic. Things like maintenance, testing, trouble-shooting are things that hey have the "slaves" do.
In reality, it's that they're not quite smart enough to grasp the concept of "no fixy, no workee".

But politically that would be virtually impossible before Jan. 1, said Norman Ornstein, a congressional expert with the American Enterprise Institute. "Because of the fiscal cliff, everybody has to sacrifice,"
It's too bad that the Washington knob polishers didn't see that damn fiscal cliff thing sooner. They could have been working on it. Someone (let's form a committee) should have put up a sign.

Like you said, the dems hate some of their own members, but they DON'T TRASH THEM IN PUBLIC.
I have thought about this for several years. Dems support the officeholder in public. No lib pundits go on TV and criticize officeholders. They all might despise Reid or Pelosi in private, but in public they are given respect. I am pretty sure a lot of them are frustrated with Obama, but nary a word in the press, on TV, on Twitter, or in the blogs.
OUR side always has people more than willing to tell us what Boehner, or Romney, or McConnell, or anyone else did wrong. Over and over, on TV, in every portion of the internet, on talk radio.
Well, one might say, this is because our party has a free exchange of ideas. Well, guess what? The low-info voters look at this public fighting and come to the conclusion we are not unified. We have candidates who have to fight off members of their own party.
And most importantly, this type of stuff gives democrats a good idea of what issues will divide us. It's like Eisenhower planning D-DAY on Movietone News.
None of this does any good for long-term electoral success. I don't know the answer, but it does seem like we are engaged in a perpetual internicine fight, which helps the left tremendously.

So I guess I am being pessimistic and thinking it will take longer for those F-16s to degrade to being like those MiGs buried in the sand in Iraq.
Starting in 2013 Iraq will start to get the first of its 18 F-16QI Block 52s. What is worrisome is Iraq has ordered 20 sets of the conformal tanks and Sniper targeting pods. Along with 24 engines and Paveway smart-bombs. AIM-9 and AIM-7 but no AMRAAMs. And they are placing an order for an additional 18 planes.

the sequester is the fairest, most democratic solution to the problem of government debt that is practically available to the republic.
every program will be reduced initially
every (former) income tax bracket will be restored to pre-reduction levels
everyone will participate in the spending reductions and the revenue increases (not entirely, of course, because not all spending was for everyone, nor were all participants paying taxes). but it's as close as the republic can get at this time
this is not a defeat or an acceptance of failure- this is a modest step in the right direction because as nearly as is possible now everyone participates in solving the problem.
the predictions of economic doom are only predicitions- the democrats don't think tax increases will hurt- the republicans don't think spending restrictions will hurt (except defense) perhaps they are both correct, and the economy won't be hurt. if wrong, then fix by negotiating new spending and new tax reductions when, and if the problems appear to arise following the sequester.

Our Smart diplomacy seems to based on interpreting the words and public statements of assholes like the MB and Achmadinjad as being those of reasonable men that are playing to their base but don't really mean what they say. In other words, just like US liberals do. Unfortunately, this ignores two points: one that the muz base the ME rulers are playing to requires this level of bellicosity they are de facto very dangerous; and two these rulers may actually believe this crap having been steeped in the murderous brew of islam for years.

There's a lot of stupid to unpack here, so let's get started class.
the sequester is the fairest, most democratic solution to the problem of government debt that is practically available to the republic.
Define "fair." It's a rather nebulous concept as you will soon find when you try to define it. The sequester is a meat axe approach to a surgical problem. It is not "fair" and it is anything but "democratic." My definition of "fair" is "everything is on the table." Your mileage may vary. Sequester is not fair because....
every program will be reduced initially
Wrong again. Entitlements are off the table. Nice deal Boehner and McConnell made, huh?
everyone will participate in the spending reductions and the revenue increases
Wrong again, and you know this becuase you then follow that up with...
(not entirely, of course, because not all spending was for everyone, nor were all participants paying taxes). but it's as close as the republic can get at this time
So which is it? "Everyone will participate?" or "not entirely"?
this is not a defeat or an acceptance of failure- this is a modest step in the right direction
It is not even a modest step because the driver of Federal debt is entitlements, and they are off the table. Sequester does nothing to solve the problem except ignore the problem. It is a token nod in the direction of maybe getting a solution. It is not a solution, it is not even a "modest" solution. Why? Because it is no solution at all.
because as nearly as is possible now everyone participates in solving the problem.
Incorrect yet again ::: sigh :::: as noted above.

the fairest solution practically available at this time- the sequestor comes closest to affecting all participants- because it affects all spending that is on the table, and it affects all taxes that are on the table because it restores pre-tax cut rates. that is as close to fair as anything that has been proposed. the more nearly everyone participates in the solution, the more nearly fair the result can be said to be. it may also prove to be the only way to raise the subject of entitlements. the direction of current negotiations is one in whch rates are raised for a very few (the democrat's proposal), and the entitlements are restricted or reduced for a few
