— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
Not much news out there. I see stuff about the weather, local traffic, and, well, this unfortunate item. They found a body in the firefighter shooter's home.

We are in the blizzard area. So far about an inch and a half on the ground. Pretty windy.
Local news is in full emergency weather mode. (I think they are hoping that this is like the Blizzard of '78.)
The snow doesn't bother me. I am worried about power, so keeping my fingers crossed.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Happy Boxing Day to all our UK, Maple Leaf and Aussie Hordes. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
I donÂ’t know that IÂ’ve talked about William Fox, the founder of the Fox Film Corporation (later Twentieth Century-Fox) all that much. Originally from Hungary, he was a driven, grasping, ice-cold entrepreneur whose goal was the controlling of the motion picture industry rather than the advancement of it. As I wrote in a discussion of one of his most famous stars, In Theda Bara, William Fox had found a golden goose. He then proceeded, systematically and deliberately, to kill it.
Fox despised his father as a lazy ne’er do well, and when he was in a position of power, he became “Father” writ large to his mother, siblings and children. None of the Fox women worked (women weren’t supposed to, in any event) and all of the men were on a Fox payroll. This created both fear and slavish supplication among the family; no-one knew what lack of respect or perceived over-fawning would cause the mercurial Fox to cut them off without a cent. A fascinating story about his need to dominate comes from Neal Gabler's marvelous 1988 history, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood:
‘William Fox, who also had two daughters, married them off reasonably well to men outside the industry, but he took his control to even further extremes than Mayer. "Possessive is just barely touching it," said Fox's niece, Angela Fox Dunn. "He let both girls marry, and luckily they both got pregnant shortly thereafter. According to my mother,* as soon as both girls gave birth, to boys, the two mothers and their infant sons were brought back to Fox Hall, where cottages were built on the estate for them, and the husbands were 'dismissed,' to use my mother's word. One husband was named Taussig. I never heard what happened to him. The other was an attorney in NYC named Maurice Schwartz. They way my mother told it, what happened to Schwartz was like one of those bad mystery stories. She said he came home from work one day, put his key in the front door, and found a totally empty apartment. No wife. No son. No furniture. He thought he had walked into the wrong apartment. He had a heart attack and died right there on the bare floor. . . .Then Fox raised those boys [his grandchildren] as his own sons." As a kind of coup de grace, he legally adopted them and renamed one William Fox II and the other William Fox III.’
ItÂ’s a cold day here in Massachusetts. Even colder having to sit at the desk and work. So IÂ’m off to grab a cup of tea, if the damned cafeteria will boil some water. Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*'Mother' was Fox's youngest sister, Malvina, whose daughter reported "she loved him in an almost incestuous way. They would sit and hold hands like lovers for hours and she would stare into his eyes. . . ."

Dec. 26, 1776, about 6:30 A.M.,
About 2 miles outside of town, the advance parties rejoin the main columns and are startled by the sudden appearance of 50 armed men, but they were American militia led by Adam Stephen. They had not known about the plan to attack Trenton, and had assaulted a Hessian outpost earlier in the morning. Washington panicked, fearing that the Hessians will now be on guard because of the attack, shouts at Stephen, "You sir! You Sir, may have ruined all my plans by having them put on their guard.”
As it turns out, when Rall received word of the first raid, he thought that this was was the attack he had been warned about the night before, and that there would be no further action that day. Not knowing this, Washington makes a bold move and orders the column on to Trenton

I have a nice Hamilton Beach that's one of those "stay or go" models- it can brew into a carafe or into travel mugs. Except it doesn't brew evenly into the two mugs, so if you try that you get one half-full mug and a mess, and the carafe always dribbles, so you have to pour over the sink if you don't want coffee all over the counter.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at December 26, 2012 04:20 AM (/eBe8)
Which would accomplish what, exactly?
I mean, I can at least see a point to releasing names and addresses of sex offenders- I'm actually not actually okay with that until we can fix things so the 19 year old who has sex with his 16 year old girl friend is not considered a rapist, but I can see where there's some actual benefit.
But releasing the names of gun permit holders in NY? Which means the only people (other than government personnel) who can legally own handguns in the city? What good is that supposed to do?

We almost never drink coffee in the Poppins household (though I do like a cup as a warmup before golf), so when we have guests, like yesterday, who do drink the stuff, it's an adventure. I usually pull out an old Corningware 9 cup percolator I've had since I was a boy, but somehow, over the last year, it broke. I briefly debated making "my famous coffee" in the manner Steve Martin made in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, but decided not to. Told the BIL if he wanted any coffee, bring his own damn Mr. Coffee.
So he did. He's a nice guy. In fact, for Christmas, he gave me a gift certificate offering me a day's use of his restored '57 Bel-Air. That'll come in handy on a nice summer's day, methinks.
But I do miss the Corningware pot. So I have to trawl ebay for one.

Ah, I knew I forgot something - RIP Jack Klugman. I only know two Odd Couple stories, so here they are:
In the early seasons during the opening credits, you see an overhead shot of Tony Randall slouching down the street, overloaded with luggage and dropping down to rest. As he does, a passerby turns and seems to speak to him. As Randall tells it, the fellow had no idea that it was a shoot, and actually stopped to ask, "hey, buddy, are you OK?" As Randall put it, it was the one time anybody in NYC actually bothered to help someone, and it nearly ruined the take. But they decided to leave it in.
Another story - which I'll bet J.J. Sefton will find familiar - takes place during the five-year run of the show, when one of the writers was pitching an idea for an OC script. Nobody liked it, but the writer kept pushing. Finally, Klugman, mentioning another of producer Garry Marshall's shows, said, "Why don't you pitch it to Happy Days ?"
"Are you kidding?" the writer barked. "Who else would buy this piece of shit?"

Some years ago I cut myself down to one good cup of coffee per day. So I stop at Starbucks or Caribou on my way in and ignore the office coffee drama.
On the rare occasion I do have a cup in the office, I will make a new pot and take my coffee from the first drips.. it's stronger.. then leave the weak crap left for the rest of the horde.

I watched a special about the Great Barrier Reef over the weekend. Great photography and the like, but during the second hour of it they were talking about how there is some die off going on with the coral because if there is a water temp shift of 2 degrees it can cause them to stress and then die. They of course had to bring in AGW or CLIMATE CHANGE with and increase of CYCLONES as they are wont to do. At the start of the program, they talked about how the reef got started 10,000 years ago after the last ice age. I guess the people back then didn't bitch about a great bloody reef growing out there where there used to be nothing.

Read a million reviews and settled on one that had some bad reviews...but they were mostly about burned popcorn, not explosions or other serious problems.

That was sometime in the late 80s and it kept going for another ten years.
Our current unit is a Panasonic that has been pretty solid despite further appliance assassination attempts by my mother. We chose it mainly because of its capacity and didn't notice the wattage at the time. Most food packaging instructions don't factor for anything above 1000 watts. This unit runs 1250. Most of the time it isn't a problem but sometimes we forget and do our own little mini-CERN experiments.

Yup. And I never knew until very recently that
we had a crash and almost a depression in 1920. But Calvin Coolidge
ignored his key economic adviser, a guy named Herbert Hoover, and did
nothing but lower taxes. An obscure phenomenon known as "the Roaring
20's" happened.
And 9 years later, Hoover was president.
Hmmm....
Posted by: J.J. Sefton at December 23, 2012 08:19 AM (XkWWK)
Warren G. Harding. Nothing against Cal, he's neck and neck with Reagan as the best president in the last century*, but it was Warren G Harding who made the decision to do nothing. Forever tainted by Teapot Dome (which wouldn't even make the news today if Barky's minions did the same), Harding was the man who had to clean up the majority of the messes left by fucking Wilson.
*Here's one of my favorite historical what ifs: What if Calvin Coolidge Jr. wore socks? CC Jr died in 1924 after playing tennis with no socks. He developed a blister that got infected and died. By all accounts this took a great deal of the heart out of his father, who didn't run for reelection in 1928. He'd have won in a walk if he had run. I'm not saying losing his son was the only reason Cal retired, but I suspect it played a big part. With Cal as president in 1929, they would have been no intervention following the crash, no over regulation, no activist government, hell, no Great Depression, as the economy would have bounced right back like it did when Harding made the same decision post WWI. No FDR, no nanny government, no nothing that's killed this country, none of it. Sometimes I try and imagine a world where Calvin Coolidge Jr. wore socks..
And then I cry. A lot.

Three things that the anti-gun nuts will not acknowledge in the firefighter shooting.
1. Death penalty for beating his Grandmother to death with a hammer would have prevented this.
2. This felon was not allowed to own any of these weapons.
3. An off duty police officer that happened to ride by stopped the carnage with his own weapon.

Intervention is bad unless its not. Lack of intervention after the crash was one of the main mistakes made by Hoover. That is not according to me but according to Milton Freidman.
The Fed was tasked with the responsibility to stabilize the banks. By listening to his Treasury secretary who advised not to let the Fed intervene, Hoover allowed the Bank runs which led to a huge mess that we could not recover from. After the runs, they attempted to fix it by applying incorrect intervention which I assume you refer to.

I loved it because it presented history and invention as a series of somewhat random accidents and mishaps as opposed to some orderly, intentional process.
IIRC, he made the "connection" between a loom and a modern computer. It was not direct by any means. It's too bad there aren't geeky programs like that anymore. It's six cards, each with about six rows of numbers, maybe seventy-two different numbers on each card. Pick a card, pick any number off the card. I show you each card in turn, and ask you if your number is on it. After getting your answers, I tell you your number. Works every time.
I just sum the upper left-hand numbers in my head from each card where you answer yes. The sum is your number. Struck me as an interesting puzzle to try to design.

The highest-ranking official caught up in the scandal, Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell, has not “resigned” from government service, as officials said last week. He is just switching desks. And the other three are simply on administrative leave and are expected back.
The four were made out to be sacrificial lambs in the wake of a scathing report issued last week that found that the US compound in Benghazi, Libya, was left vulnerable to attack because of “grossly inadequate” security.
State Department leaders “didn’t come clean about Benghazi and now they’re not coming clean about these staff changes,” a source close to the situation told The Post., adding, the “public would be outraged over this.”

Of course, it helps that we mix Starbuck's verona/sumatra with maxwell house dark roast to make our own blend. Stout stuff; if it had opposable thumbs, you'd call it Mr. Coffee, Sir. If you dared speak in its presence at all.
