— Gabriel Malor Happy Friday.
For the second time this month, a man was pushed onto the tracks ahead of an approaching NYC subway train. He's dead. Authorities are looking for the "mumbling woman" who pushed him.
Iowa will not be giving driver's licenses to aliens who were allowed to remain in the U.S. only through the DHS "deferred action" program that is modeled on the failed DREAM Act legislation. "State law does not allow it to issue driver's licenses or identification cards to people who are in the country illegally."

I tend to keep back from the edge and aware of my surroundings when a train is approaching. People need to do a better job of expecting their fellow travelers to be unhinged.

We're missing an opportunity here.
I was looking through a book titled "Look At My Striped Shirt!" yesterday, written by a group named Phat Phree. Pretty damn funny. Just a collection of short social commentary essays, all of which could have been written in a day by the commenters here at AoSHQ.
The only difference is they are making money doing it.

The guardian angels came about because ordinary citizens were so petrified to go on the subway system for fear of being robbed, beat or murdered.
Rule 1) Do not go anywhere near the edge until the train has pulled into the station.
Rule 2) Do not talk to anybody on the train platform
Rule 3) If you see someone that looks sketchy, move as far away as possible.

The same with school districts. They love to cut the "arts" programs, which I do not like because I do like music, but it is not as important as (imo) the 3 R's. But what really gets the voter voting for more taxes to solve the "problem" is cutting sports. Oh the wailing and gnashing of teeth as the football team might have to miss a game or two.
Plus moving classes into mobile units. It's like having a trailer park at your school.

It never fails. Usually they end up building a new gym to go along with the classrooms. It is only used for sports and a few PE classes.
My solution which always gets me dirty looks from my wife and her teacher friends is, at least 2 shifts of school. The building are there anyways, some parents work odd hours and would love for their kids to be at school while they are working anyway. Plus it's a 3 shift world. Might as well get the kids used to it. You would need one high school in my town instead of the 3 we have. Teachers would stay the same. Admins would be reduced, Maintenance reduced. Dirty looks from teachers.

The background to the story is that the bear was an anonymously donated gift to a church and was given to the girl unaware that the box contained the gun as well.
The gun was real but inoperable as the firing pin had been removed.
What could the man at the range possibly comment on as I am sure he did not know the background?

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Woke up this morning to an ice sculpture sitting in my driveway and I’ve still got the chill in my bones. Have I mentioned how much I hate winter? I want to live in Vic country. Actually, I’d rather live in Alextopia, where the men are crack shots with a gun or a quip and the women are all leggy and racktastic, but we must suffer for our sins. So let’s get to some Hollywood talk:
ThereÂ’s always been a caste system in the movies. Unless working together on a shoot, stars only talk to stars, crew to crew, stand-ins to stand-ins and so on. In the Golden Age, the studios themselves had their caste; everyone wanted to work at MGM, or failing that, at least Paramount. Then came Warner Brothers. Your last, desperate stop before falling into the quicksand of Poverty Row was Columbia* and its brash, bullying boss, Harry Cohn.
Cohn was known, and reveled in his status as, the biggest ball-buster in Hollywood; the rudest, crudest, loudest macher in the jungle.** He yearned for respect from the Mayers, Zukors and Thalbergs of the movie industry, however, and, knowing that an Oscar was the only way to get respect, gave director Frank Capra nearly unlimited powers during his tenure at the studio.
And yet, Cohn was, at bottom, an insecure man who saw Columbia as himself writ large. An insult to the studio was an insult to him. Conversely, support of the studio was support of him, but his twisted sense of honor didn’t always reward those on his side: during a labor strike, one writer supporting the strikers criticized Cohn. Another writer quipped, “who eats my bread sings my song,” Cohn’s own defense of his autocratic ways. When Cohn heard this, instead of firing the recalcitrant writer, he fired his supporter. As he told the man, “I’m grateful for what you did. But now, every time I see you on the lot, I’ll remember it. And I’ll know that I’m indebted to you. You’ll have something on me. I’ll do everything I can to get you another job in any studio you want, but I won’t let you work here.”
Cohn could be unbelievably crude, dropping trou in his office and ordering starlet Lucille Ball to “suck it, bitch!” He could be belligerent, screaming “Liars!” at a row of writers’ offices when the residents began typing furiously as they saw him walk by. But he could also be a soft touch, flying in a rare medicine for one of Columbia’s dying writers, but ordering him not to tell anybody: “You’ll ruin my repuatation.” And he could also use his own personality as a bargaining chip; when one director resigned because he couldn’t get along with one of Cohn’s assistants, the mogul told him, “if you say you left because you couldn’t stand him, nobody’ll hire you. Tell them you left because you couldn’t stand me. Everybody’ll want you!”
And yet, whenever Cohn is discussed, stories like this seem to be the most frequently told: when walking around the lot one day, Cohn heard a guard singing. When he asked the guard what he’d rather do, sing or be gate superintendant, the guard answered, “sing.”
“OK, then,” Cohn snapped. “You’re fired.”
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. See you on Monday.
*“Poverty Row” was the nickname applied to a stretch of third and fourth-level studios such as Tiffany, Republic, Grand National and Realart on and around Gower Street, just off of Sunset, most of which cranked out low budget Westerns and serials. Of the “majors,” Universal really did not count as a destination studio and both Fox and Twentieth were negligible players.
**ThereÂ’s your Yiddish word for the day. IÂ’ll let J.J. define it.

It costs aprox. $500.00 to get a permit when all is said and done.
Your permit is good for 3 years and you will pay $350 every time it expires to renew it.
Also if you move you basically have to go through the entire permitting process all over again.

Oh, jeez. Didn't know much about him, but always thought he was a good guy. Too bad GWHB didn't let him finish Saddam off.
I'm not going to link it, but the execrable Doonesbury actually had a funny cartoon about the General. It seems that Duke and Honey had opened up "Club Scud" in (I think) Tehran, which, as Duke boasted, was "getting all the heavy hitters in town! And speaking of which. . ."
In the final panel, the club patrons yell, "NORM!" Duke asks, "how's the war going, General?"
"Ahead of schedule," barks Schwarzkopf. "Which is more than I can say for that beer!"

A lot of the highways are built that way too. They double as improvised airfields. The main route from Seoul to Pusan has 3-4 spots like that. You're driving on a 4 lane highway and all of a sudden there are 10 lanes on your side of the road - and 10 lanes on the other side - for like a mile and a half.

The problem with that is passenger entry and exiting. If you set up guard rails you'd have to create breaks in the guard rails for passengers to pass through while boarding and disembarking from the train. Then you'd have to make sure that the trains come to a stop EXACTLY lined up with these gaps, which would require quite an investment in sensor equipment and electronic overhauls to the trains themselves, not to mention training for the operators. And you'd have to make sure that the trains stopped long enough to allow all passengers to board and disembark, which would be hampered by the narrow entry and exit points; that means longer delays between stops. And even then there'd always be the potential for someone with a grudge to come along and shove another person through one of those gaps and onto the tracks in front of a speeding train.

People are behind rails and gates until train stops and subway driver pushes button. Gates open, people board.
After train is ready to go, gates (which automatically close) lock again as another button is pushed.

I think you set up guard rails with gates which lock until a train stops. Radio controlled by subway operator.

The problem is high speed subways. We need subway cars to be pulled by horses so they can stop in time when someone is pushed off the platform by a tea party member prolly.

I think he still believes that the Indonesian is willing to cut a penny or two in spending which is completely ignoring every fucking thing he's ever done including submitting a couple dogshit budgets with so much fucking spending even the donks in the Senate wiped their asses with them. Big and fascist government gives them more power and money so they have no incentive to interfere with it's exponential growth. Any candidate who proposes anything other than the beltway status quo is attacked and if they happen to make it past the primary they are interfered with by the party insiders. Their main objective is to be in charge of the pig pile when the event horizon is reached.

Al, it's one of those lines that's so good, people want to take credit for it. Not to dispute my friend J.J., but the majority - though not all - of the books I've seen the story repeated in give the credit to Skelton. I tend to think it was Skelton, because the story turns up in the Hollywood columnist James Bacon's book Hollywood Is A Four-Letter Town, and he was a good friend of Skelton's.

See, I'm one of those government employees who actually tries to earn my paycheck. I know, it's crazy. But I figure, the taxpayer pays my salary, so I should try to earn that salary.
The problem is that I'm surrounded by people on whom I depend to be able to do my work, and they DON'T really care about earning their salary. A lot of college students either deliberately feed the squirrels, or else throw away or dump lots of edible food that attracts the squirrels. They get used to humans, particularly being fed by humans, and that means they lose whatever fear they may have otherwise had.
That was the case when I was at UNH. Some of those squirrels were the size of a small dog, I swear.

I'm so torn on this. As a conservative, I recognize that 60% of the people in my building could be fired and no one in the world would even notice. As an individual determined to do the best I can for me and my family, I know that right now, that's a government job. I work hard, I try to earn my taxpayer-funded salary, but I still know I could be fired and it wouldn't impact anything.
I feel like a hypocrite if I ever get too deep in the weeds about it.

Here's a version of Sugar, Sugar by the Semisonics with Mary Lou Lord, who, in the words of Courtney Love, "gave Kurt a blowjob and made a career off it.":

Exactly. If Tavis Smiley wasn't such a flatlining clueless dumbass, he'd realize that Co'nell is inadvertently shoving a machine gun so far up the JEF's ass that it goes further than Reggie Love territory.

Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa.
Of course the prior, despicable jackwagon who held the governor's office [now the sec of ag] tried to turn the state into an 'immigration enterprise zone' whatever the heck that is. Luckily, his idiot wife just lost District 3? 4?, they redistricted so I can't remember, to my favorite congressman, the Right Outrageous Steve King, God bless him. She tried to debate the guy. HaHA!! Have you ever caught Congressman King on CSpan having at it with no notes and not a teleprompter in sight? He can go on for hours and make sense the entire time.

Bing is a treat to see every day - their photos get better all the time.
Meanwhile Google treats us to an aging hippy's crayola stylings of whatever cause has captured his tiny little attention today, which excludes all the ones that are traditional and relevant to our country and society, of course.
And how long must we weight until Sean Penn flounces his profligate artism before us by creating some visually stunting seens for Google?
