— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
Santorum went to San Juan, Puerto Rico yesterday, where he told a newspaper, El Vocero, that Puerto Rico should only gain statehood if the territory makes English its main language.
"As in any other state, you have to comply with this and any federal law. And that is that English has to be the main language," Santorum told the paper. "There are other states with more than one language as is the case in Hawaii, but to be a state in the United States, English has to be the main language."
Santorum is apparently unaware that English is compulsory in Puerto Rican schools from first through twelfth grade. He's also apparently unaware that there is no federal law that says that "English has to be the main language." The immediate response of the newspaper staff should have been: "Just what language do you think you're speaking with us right now, idiota?"
Santorum then went to a town hall where he charmingly referred to himself as "Senator Puertorriqueño." Next it was off to an evangelical church on the 85% Catholic island where he campaigned on social issues again. But please, he's really tired of the media always bringing up social issues.
There are 20 Puerto Rican delegates at stake in Sunday's primary. If a candidate wins a majority, he takes all 20 delegates. If no candidate wins a majority, delegates will be awarded proportionally to each candidate who gets more than 15% of the vote.

One thing the bill doesn't do is resolve how to keep the federal Highway Trust Fund solvent beyond next year. The largest source of money for the fund, which pays for highway and transit programs, is federal fuel taxes: 18.4 cents a gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents a gallon for diesel. Revenue from those taxes has declined since the economic downturn in 2008 and because the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks is increasing.
End quote
The first thing they could do is totally eliminate the bullshit raiding of the fund to put 20% in urban mass transit. Then they can pass a law that says fund will only be used for highway and bridge construction and maintenance. But that will never happen. The other thing they can do is get rid of café standards.

I saw no indication Santorum didn't know that.
Why demagogue? Santorum is right. Hell, I bet Romney, who has been posing as an extremist on immigration for a couple of months, would agree.
On many of these issues, Santorum is attacked for things that Romney is not materially different on. Reminds me of gay rights guys bashing Hillary for Obama's benefit. I guess it's because they thought Obama was lying?
Anyway, of course Puerto Rico and the rest of this country should have a common language. And of course our schools promote English already. No need to be obnoxious.

But that's not what the Politico article (the Reuters article said nothing at all about the visit) said:
"Speaking Wednesday evening at an evangelical church here, Santorum had the opportunity to put his faith – which he is vocal about – on display before several hundred parishioners."
There's a difference from displaying your faith and ringing the social issue bell. I doubt very, very much that Politico--POLITICO--would omit a mention of Santorum "campaigning on social issues." Libs can't help it. Fact is, Santorum's been a lot more disciplined about that of late. Probably too late, but still.

As soon as he received the coveted Michelle Malkin and "Poppin' Fresh" seals of approval, I knew I couldn't support the guy. Yeah, so he tripped up on the "official" status of English in the Commonwealth, but making English the "primary" language as a condition of Statehood should be lauded. Especially when he's willing to go to PR and say it directly.
But, yeah, I'm sure whatever Romney advocates for the moment is better.

You must have missed by answer to your posts yesterday. I wasn't disagreeing with you in the original post. I was expanding to write-up based on research I did last year about a lot of different "insurrections" in early US history.

Vic,
He sees that Romney keeps picking up delegates by winning the easy to get territories. It is cheap for Santorum to show up, and he might pick up a few additional delegates (who knows).
I used to be on the Credentials Committee for the College Republicans, and you would be amazed how important that portion of the ground game is (and how ugly it is, to be honest). Who gets delegates/authority and why is an ugly, unseemly process, and there are a bunch of egos involved. The smaller the stakes, the bigger the egos.
I don't know that saying 'insiders are for Romney' is the proper way to look at how he keeps gaining by losing, but rather Romney has done all of his research and is playing to clench this primary process--not playing to win over the hearts and minds of primary voters. It is certainly a high-risk proposition.

As for statehood? No. Not just no but hell no. The entire island is systematically dysfunctional from top to bottom, and there's no way in hell I want that mess any further involved in the USA.

Hear, hear. I don't know Gabe, and only know anything about his personal preferences from what little I read here. But I've never gotten the impression that Santorum's intolerance toward homosexuality or Romney's tolerance of the same (if that's even true; I can't think of a single thing he's ever said on the subject) is the sole reason (or even a major reason) Gabe supports Mitt over Rick.
I'm not gay and I guess I'm a social moderate because I couldn't care less about other people's sexual preferences, but I'm supporting Romney because I think he has the best chance of defeating Obama. Period. Oh, that and I think Santorum is a judgmental prick with a freaky wife and I wouldn't want the two of them in my home much less the White House.
Anyway, the gay baiting around here should stop. It's wrong generally, and it's certainly unfair to Gabe in particular.

Yep - and sadly he's 100% right. The Republican party has known that since GHWB. You put some moderate squish on top, a token con as VP, and that's how it's done. The conservative in America has no recourse without choosing self destruction. No sense blaming Mitt for telling the simple, ugly truth. Personally, I don't care for sugar coatings.
But we'd do the same to the moderates if we had any sense. Force them to pick between a right winger, or a commie. Happily we usually win in that one. But, of course, that means you have to fight and get mean during campaign season, which our side hates to do. The American Right is, to a large degree, a collection of spineless nicey-nice types. It's sickening.

My bigger fear: a future Dem prez gets the bright idea of putting him on the Supreme Ct and the Republicans being too racially cowed to say no. Obama is the ultimate affirmative action candidate, and there's really no limit to the obeisance his fanbois will show him.
On the other hand, being a judge requires work, and that's really not consistent with the affirmative action lifestyle.

The excerpt hits on Obama not releasing his birth certificate, talks about Americans all striving to be in the 1%, and at the end only includes a throway line 'I think he's great' when trying to change the subject. Posted by: In Exile at March 15, 2012 04:24 AM (0401c)

While English may be compulsory in school, the actual quality of English spoken and understood varies widely. I've worked with Puerto Rican national guard units during mobilization and deployment, and you cannot assume that you can use English with every Soldier. Also, when communicating internally, the PR Guardsmen definitely default to Spanish.
Claiming that it's in the school curriculum is not the same as saying that the Commonwealth is bi-lingual.

Vic,
Not having a ground game is not really a good excuse when running for POTUS. This is the big leagues, and if you can't get people excited enough to pump cold, hard cash into the coffers early on, then there is no way to get elected.
Running a good ground game is what allowed Reagan to win Massachusetts (and 49/50) when getting re-elected. Mittens might be a robot, but he has the management experience to handle all aspects of a campaign (as he should, he has been running for ever).
Posted by: In Exile at March 15, 2012 04:30 AM (0401c)
I never said it was an endorsement. If you read my original post regarding this issue, I referenced Gabe's focus on Santorum's clumsiness on the campaign trail, and his apparent habit of giving the Democrats ammunition against him.
I mocked Gabe for focusing on one, while being blind to the other. The Matt Romney thing is all over the lefty websites, and they are using it to their advantage.
And if this doesn't bring back fond memories of John McCain saying "You have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency", I don't know what does.

For "new" non-establishment candidates one will have little money early in the process and some of the States the Party stacks the decks against them.
Why is it that every damn candidate qualified for the ballot in SC and yet they had a hard time in some of these other States? It wasn't because they didn't know the "rules".

This is gonna cause a fuss:
Pa. Lawsuit Could Make DOMA Applicable to Private Companies
A Pennsylvania lawsuit could substantially increase the reach of the Defense of Marriage Act, potentially prohibiting private companies from recognizing same-sex spouses.
The case, which went before a judge in Philadelphia on Monday, seeks to determine whether the death benefits accrued by the late Sarah Ellyn Farley should be paid to her parents or her wife from a legal Canadian same-sex marriage, Jennifer Tobits.
Farley's employer, the Cozen O'Connor law firm, was unable to determine which party had the appropriate claim to Farley's benefits, so the case was put before a judge.
...
While DOMA has not been used in the past to prevent private companies from recognizing same-sex marriages, Farley's parents claim that since the act and a similar Pennsylvania state statute both define marriage in traditional terms as between a man and a woman, Tobits' claim to the benefits is invalid.

Vic,
We have elections every four years, and the rules are pretty well known in advance. In fact, it is now much easier for insurgent candidates to get recognition due to the superpacs. I'm sorry, but it takes next to nothing to get on the ballot in most states (seriously, $10k was too much for Santorum?), so I find it ludicrous to fault the 'establishment' in that instance. It is just shitty campaigning.

1) a blowhard less conservative than Romney who manages to spend $1.5 million in personal air travel per annum and run up huge debt at Tiffany's, all while on wife #3.
and
2) A candidate who has done NOTHING in an executive role and can't figure out how to get on ballots, despite having years to prepare. Senators make terrible presidents.

That is exactly what I said, but the key here is "most" States. Some States simply paying 10K will not get you on the ballot. You have to canvass hundreds of districts getting registered voters to sign a petition to get you on the ballot. That takes a lot of money to hire those people unless you are crazy uncle and have thousands of potheads to do it for you based on decades of running a pothead ticket.

Her boyfriend, Adam Mutterperl, is the son of one of the most well-connected leftist Jewish families on the East Coast (add the West Coast to that, apparently), with ties to neo-Marxist Brandeis University as decades old donors… and whose father, Bill Mutterperl, worked directly for Paul Volcker, one of Obama’s pals, advisors, and Keynesian “stimulus” bill architects. Sen. Toomey Praises Passage Of Farm Truck Amendment
U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) today praised Senate passage of a bipartisan amendment he co-sponsored to the pending highway bill that would free farmers from onerous red tape.
The amendment, which passed by voice vote, would clarify that the federal government may not require farmers to comply with the same red tape reporting requirements that apply to long-haul truckers. Farm truck regulations would instead be left to states to decide, without interference from the U.S. Transportation Department.

Springsteen was my favorite rocker (by far) in my youth. I saw several of his amazing shows, but since about 1985 he has done nothing original, and has devolved into an immensely wealthy caricature of the populist strummer, rousing the people from their slumber and marching on Washington.
Unfortunately for Springsteen, he is too busy hanging out in Rumson (a fabulously wealthy town), taking his daughter to equestrian competitions, and thumbing his nose at the people who made him rich to be taken seriously as a representative of "the people."
I agree: fuck Bruce Springsteen.

Like most 'pop artists' Springsteen is a leftist (even country has gotten more leftish) and his music has always reflected that. Now he is just upset that Obama is FAIL and he must see OWS as a revival of the protests of his youth that he missed out on. I think it might be a psychological thing as the nuns who were his teachers were probably proto-Santori.

I know, I know, I'm totally irrational. You know, wanting someone that actually more closely represents my beliefs. I'm fairly certain that Romney is far far to the left of where I am on issues I actually care about. He's actually far enough left on *those* issues that I *really* don't see a big enough difference between him and Obama. Unfortunately, those are my primary issues...the ones that would, in a normal election year, help me decide to vote *for* a candidate. They're not there. Yes, Obama is terrible, but so is Romney. Further, they're both really terrible *in the things that matter the most to me right now*. So, go ahead, and keep calling me a liberal troll. What the Republican Party "is" already was proven.
It doesn't need your approval.
It will go on regardless of you.
It plays us all as fools.
It already destroyed us.
To which level each of us perceives that is yet an individual matter.
How personally significant your membership in that party is remains the only question. Do you belong where you are abused by your "betters"? Do you cling to the idea that you are assessed any value by the Republican Party beyond the taxes and donations you submit? Consider whether the fear of being ostracized is more intense than the outrageous injuries from treacherous Republican Party leadership?
If I must be a bitter clinger, then as ever it's to my Constitution and Faith in God given Rights to every Person. And to the extent that the Republican/Democrat Party revises Constitutional Governance into authoritarianism, may God in mercy grant new life to Liberty in the destruction of corruption.

That's weak. Romney took the most delegates and expanded his lead by 6. As I said yesterday, the game is 1144, not moral victories.
As of today, Romney has a good chance of reaching 1144, given the voting trends and the upcoming winner take all states. Santorum needs to significantly over perform from his current baseline to get to 1144. Even winning the winner take all, he can't get to 1144 at his current support levels. Gingrich is mathematically eliminated and is only in it to try and stop Romney from getting to 1144. Gingrich dropping out will not help Santorum, since Romney is the second choice for about half his supporters.
If I had to guess, I would say Romney will cross 1144 in the California primary in June.
Did anyone notice that Romney gave Santorum a huge gift in Illinois yesterday by withdrawing challenges? If the challenges had been kept in place, he would have only been able to compete for 14 delegates, instead of the 44 he can now compete for. As it is, he still can't compete in several Congregational districts because he failed to submit enough signatures.

First: not voting for either candidate is not "voting for Obama." It's not voting for either candidate. Let's get that clear. While we may not like the ramification thereof, "A pox on both your houses" is a valid political position.
Second, in my case, I don't have to hold my nose to vote for Romney- I'm in Texas and one of two things will be true: 1) The Republican (whoever it is) will win Texas. 2) If Texas is a battle ground- that means we've already lost.
However, an affirmative vote for Romney is an indication that I support what he stands for. And, compared to Obama, I do- so I may pull that lever anyway. In the primary? No F'ing way. Within the microcosm of Conservative politics, Romney is so far out of touch with my values that he almost doesn't register.

As far as I'm concerned, it seems like a smart move for the long term. But, in real life, the north east states, and west coast states, are so much farther gone in most important ways that I'd be cutting my nose to spite my face if I advocated it. There are other states that need to be kicked out first.
Actually, I can see some virtue in the idea of dividing up the US into a few different regions and all going our own ways - just maintaining a trade & military alliance.

Well, that's nice, but also inaccurate. My issue with Santorum is that he's a big government, big spending, go-along-to-get-along Republican who wants to impose via federal law his flawed, anti-freedom morality on the country.
Please note: only the last bit involves social conservatism. I don't have "one issue with Santorum," I have several. Which I have written about almost exclusively. I almost never write about Santorum's stupid social ideas---for example, attempting to outlaw porn, First Amendment be damned.
Instead, I write a lot about his unapologetically pro-big government behavior while in Congress. For that, I am routinely accused of being a "single issue" blogger (that issue being, oddly, gay marriage).

No, not "by this crowd". Why insert that, as if a correction?
"They are much more sophisticated than the '60s and '70s radicals were."
"They" are the '60s and '70s radicals, the same Underground Weathermen all grown up, don't you know? As for much more sophistication, it certainly isn't represented by the American public. If anything, the opposite is playing out as Ft. Hood proved, and as this disarming of our troops illustrates.
"needing billions of dollars in psychiatric care and housing subsidies and other expensive crap that they can continue bleeding the taxpayers for."
Whoa, bossy. First, it is wrong to alter terms of contract without consent from all involved. The President (Bush) ordered our troops to Afghanistan and Iraq, and ordered their compliance to neoconservative nation building suicidal tactics known as the "Karzai" Rules of Engagement. Bush and subsequently Obama have redeployed our troops too many times with more re-deployments yet to come in this war determined by the "best" neoconservative intellectuals to be necessarily prolonged for a century, at least. The suicidal ratio is higher than ever. So long as taxpayers and Congress sign onto declared wars, we do owe our troopers their health benefits as promised when they enlisted.
Where do you come off with referencing veterans' contracted benefits as "expensive crap that they can continue bleeding the taxpayers for"? Obama has already prepared to cut what benefits our veterans were promised on enlistment. That is no surprise, particularly given Obama's first presidential act to destroy contract law, not to mention his aversion to recognizing our troops as valuable humans.
If you're criticizing the promises for "free" health care, true enough. "Promise them anything; just get their votes," Mitt Romney proved he can't manage numbers in setting his own state up for bankruptcy, still in denial based upon the "popularity" of free lunch amongst his former constituents. (Which regular poster here was bragging about being "smart" taking advantage of Obama's cash for clunkers?) Romney "improved" opportunism for fraud, just as Paulson did to the world, ruining the economy. Now, who's so much more sophisticated today; Republican voting taxpayer moms, dads and professionals?
Posted by: maverick muse at March 15, 2012 05:45 AM (lpWVn)
Actually not true. The only way it passed was for the House to pass the Senate version that had used all 60 of the Dem Senators to pass it. They even wheeled in Byrd to vote for it, and Mass had a temporary Senator in there to make sure the Kennedy Seat voted for it. All Republicans voted against it, all of them.
When Brown won, it became impossible to make any changes to what was in the Senate bill, so the House strong armed the Dem members to vote for it. Many of them paid the ultimate price for that vote, losing in the next election. The Senate never again took up the legislation.

To me Santorum is the least objectionable candidate left standing and Mitt is a liberal who would be just as comfortable as a Dem if they allowed Mormons to join. Like you, I will vote for Dagny's "feces covered crack whore" over Obama.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer (Oct. 10, 2011):
Today, photo IDs are required to board an airplane, cash a check, or buy allergy medicine over the counter. Voting is more important than these activities. Voters understand this. A recent Rasmussen poll found 75 percent of likely U.S. voters back requiring photo IDs at the polls.
Refuting opponents' arguments, the Universities of Delaware and Nebraska found voter ID laws had no effect on turnout in federal elections from 2000 to 2006, including across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic lines.
After Georgia's law, among the nation's strictest, took effect in 2008, there was a record turnout in the presidential primary. In the 2008 general election, Georgia had its largest turnout ever. The African American vote increased 5 percent.
A Pennsylvania Department of State analysis shows 99 percent of eligible voters currently have acceptable photo IDs, and proposals under discussion will likely expand the list of photo IDs that can be used. PennDot will supply a free ID for those who need one, so the greatest possible cost to taxpayers is slightly more than $1 million, a small price to ensure the validity of each vote.
Some argue this is a solution without a problem, but in 2009, an FBI investigation led to forgery and election-fraud charges against seven Pittsburgh-area ACORN workers; in 2008, a Philadelphia official submitted more than 8,000 fraudulent ACORN-collected voter-registration forms.

So since they're inarguably dead even on the issues you have issues with Santorum on, what other issue could you possibly have to differentiate the two?

The very Muslim nations that accommodated "Western" civilization, participating in assimilating non-religious culture, are those which the US with allies have aided the resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism to permeate.
A natural human response after doing all the "good" possible is to curse a failure for its lack of success.
Vic representing the respected voice of reason, it is awful to realize how conveniently the "final solution" gains endorsement, genocide to Muslim "cockroaches".

If you are talking about defeating Obama, and getting him out of office, the popular vote or the perception thereof does not matter. It's electoral votes that will determine if Obama leaves the White House. Electoral votes are awarded on state -by state winners.
If you are talking about whether or not someone is perceived to have a mandate for going forward on their policies, then the perception of popular vote comes into play.
But winning or losing the White House? It's which states go which way.

OK? Check out these interesting facts.
Federated State of Micrnoesia:
In 2008, the country had more Army recruits per capita than any U.S. state. It also has more casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, per capita. The islands have lost nine soldiers in the wars out of a population of 107,000 — a rate five times the U.S. national average. (Only American Samoa has lost more soldiers, per capita, among U.S. territories.)
.
So by some quirk of logic these non-Americans must be more patriotic than PR's, southern rednecks, and, remarkably, the San Fran differently preferenced.

I just have a low tolerance for bullshit. I prefer to live in the real world, not the world of partisan spin. While I am not a Mitt supporter (being fair, I did vote for him in the FL primary), I also am being realistic that the math works out in his favor. Even if he doesn't have 1144, he will have the most votes. It will be damned hard to deny the person with the most votes the nomination at the convention.
Any other conclusion is just wishful thinking.
By the same token, I also come down hard on the bullshit that Santorum can't beat Obama in the general. The polls don't support that conclusion. Either Mitt or Rick will beat Obama in November, and do it easily. The person with very hard math to overcome is Obama. His path to 270 is very hard, and I believe impossible.
Regardless of who the nominee is, I will walk over broken glass to vote against Obama, and I believe the vast majority of the GOP will do the same. No one will be sitting this one out on our side over some RINO bullshit. If they didn't sit out 2008, they sure as hell won't sit this one out.

Hate to break it to you but overbuilding the highway systems with public money, and gutting private rail freight and private mass transit in the process was a big fucking gift to GM and the rest of the union cocksuckers in Detroit.
If you don't fund urban transit systems urban areas would see vast increases in highway usage and maintenance needs. If the unions weren't bloating mass transit costs in cities the need for highways and the cost of maintaining them in dense urban areas would drop like a rock. I don't think you realize how much of federal highway funding is going to build roads with ridiculously high capacities to low density areas as make work and make maintenance projects for local politicians.
The country is going bankrupt overbuilding and having to maintain roads to nowhere while essential infrastructure for road and rail freight crumbles to dust. If the feds helped Norfolk Southern, UP, and CSX remove the bottlenecks for bi-level freight in the central part of the country the wear and tear on highways from heavy long haul trucking, and the costs of freight transport, would drop dramatically. But nooooo got to keep spending billions on new highway signs with ARRA on them and building/maintaining six lane highways to towns with no industries and less than 5,000 people in them.

Did you know that you can sign up for the US military if you are a foreign national? After you finish your service, you get preferential treatment for citizenship. Quite a few soldiers use this as a legal way to become citizens.
This isn't even a new practice, I think it dates back to the 1800s.

"So are you against the Founding Father's objections to have a national language?"
They all spoke English. Like everyone else did in the English Colonies. I guess they figured the rest of the country they were inventing would do the same.

If the Founders were against a national language (even though every single thing they ever wrote for the US government was in English) then they were just wrong. No big deal. Language is just about everything. On top of that, trying to have a judiciary and treaties in multiple languages (given that we have enough problems keeping leftists even close to logic and reason just with plain, clear English) is an invitation to disaster. Lastly, populations will clearly split along language lines (for very obvious reasons).
Now, I am not talking about some insane language police like the idiot French have. That's moronic. But a national language is a must. If it isn't done in law then it will be done in practice ... or the nation will just disintegrate.
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March 15, 2012 06:37 AM (X3lox)

I'm pretty sure Romney is sleeping just fine and he grinds out wins. His strategy is very similar to Obama's primary strategy of picking up delegates a little bit at a time.
Frankly, I think this whole process makes Romney a lot stronger. It shows me that he is willing to do the grunt work, and has the intestinal fortitude to grind it out.

The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent country. They were formerly a US Trust Territory. Micronesia is an 'Associated State' of the US by treaty (Compact of Free Association). That essentially means they are a formal protectorate of the US.
Note the use of Associated State here for a protectorate. The Spanish term for Puerto Rico is translated as Associated Free State which tends to imply independence from the US when in fact they are not and in English they are a (self-governing (of debatable level)) Commonwealth. This is just one illustration of the difficulties introduced with multi-lingualism.

Stupid or obtuse?
There is no problem with a specific population speaking their own regional language among themselves. For trade, government, and any other cross-regional interactions, a national language is a requirement- in fact if not in name. A "nation" which has no unified language is not a nation- and will not retain its sovereignty for long.
Even if you're not a believer, the Bible has a lot of good object lessons- read about the Tower of Babel sometime.

Have you ever been west of the Connecticut River? "Urban mass transit" is less than useless in 90% of the country.
My brother-in-law manages "mass transit" for a town of 25k in Iowa (federal money). It's a fucking joke. They maintain and run buses, and the ridership is six old people who never go anywhere except downtown during normal business hours. (He himself has never ridden a bus, except when they went to Kansas City to pick one up, he had to drive it back.) Everyone else who lives there actually has to be able to get around--including being able to leave town for work.
Federally-funded mass transit is such a fucking joke that when they held a conference in Indianapolis last summer, the participants all rented cars to get downtown (which is walkable for most people).
But he gets to go see MLB games around the country on junkets, so it's a good job.

That's dangerously inaccurate. Barky is, first and foremost, ineligible. Secondly, he isn't liberal or moderate or anything in the American political spectrum. Barky is out to destroy America. Period. I'd even take a liberal wet turd like Kucinich over Barky any day of the week.
Romney is awful and he's trying to make it as painful as possible for anyone to vote for him (not sure why, but he seems to like to emulate McShame, who beat his butt senseless in the 2008 primary), but he would still be an infinite improvement over the Ineligible Idiot from Indonesia.
But, it seems that Romney wants to toy with the idea of making people form a third party (which will certainly happen right after the 2012 election, as the GOP will be totally useless after that event). I wish he would just go away, myself, but Mittens is going to stay and try to muck things up as much as he is able. That just seems to be the way Romney is.

I'm sorry, when did the (German-speaking-only) Amish integrate with mainstream American Society? 'Cause I must have missed that memo. You do know that, when they're interacting with people outside the Amish community (not all that often, but it happens) they speak English, yes? And that City Amish (I think they have a specific name for that group, but that's how I've always heard them called) speak English.
I don't have a problem with Mexican populations in certain areas speaking Spanish amongst themselves, either. But the moment you attempt to cater to all languages in your business, let alone in Government, you introduce a level of complexity that is unsustainable. If you were to attempt to actually govern multilingually, you'd find the Government (any government) tearing itself apart pretty quickly.
The issue with their not being an "official" national language just means we don't care which specific language we all use- but, make no mistake, for the Government to govern, and for businesses to do business, a national language is essential. English is that national language- in fact, though not name- and (with some rare exceptions) lack of even basic fluency is a huge hurdle to overcome- sometimes impossible.

That's not saying much. We just saw this Congress pass gargantuan, insane legislation without ever reading it, at all, and proudly proclaiming that fact. In fact, during the Porkulus, people were specifically told that they had to vote for the bill sight unseen ... and they did and no one went to jail.
So ... by that standard the language of legislation wouldn't matter at all, but by normal, regular standards of sentient people (not affirmative action rules for retards). But, if you think that a multi-lingual legislature is reasonable (for a real country, not a fake one that does pretty much nothing of value and exists not of its own efforts but because other, real countries allow them to declare themselves nations) then you need to radically reassess what it is that you think forms, maintains and propels nations forward.
And language is much more than just a means of communication. It includes whole piecs of human personality in it. People change to adapt to the language they must speak and society changes with them. Like I said, there's a reason that Churchill wrote about "English Speaking Peoples", using language as the line of demarcation. Language is culture in many ways. Very many ways. The idea that different languages involve nothing but different "translations" and "utterances" to express the same exact idea is ridiculous. Different languages are built around totally different world-views and those views are reflected in the language and forced on the speakers.
Language is not just a meaningless facade. It is a very deep characteristic of a peoples.

There is a reason there is no computer that can do even a half decent job of translating English to Japanese or Chinese.
That is also I suspect the reason most translated Chinese menus call pork soup "Old Man Very Happy Explodes Reluctantly Rainbows On Porcine Mountain Setting; Make Swollen Contentedness".
Studying non-indo-european languages can lead to interesting insights about the nature of language and the effect it can have on what you will even want to say, or think is important.

I don't much worry about that because I have confidence that it will be exceedingly easy to impeach Mittens and throw his butt out if he tries anything like Barky has been doing. America is itching to impeach and convict a President and put some rational limits back in that office after all the incredible damage that Barky has done to it. I'm actually looking forward to voting for Mittens (if I must) and then impeaching his sorry ass 6 months later when he starts pulling his shit with "replacing" ObamaCare. That would finally put some fear in the GOP dipshits and might even give the left a moment of pause. Jailing Barky and his junta would be much better, of course, but we have to deal with the nation we have ...

The Democrat party truly cannot comprehend a woman going to vote who is more concerned about the dent in her paycheck caused by $5-per-gallon gasoline than finding free condoms, or who worries about the future impoverishment of her children and grandchildren because of Obama's borrow and spend binges more than she worries about buying the Pill, or whose most pressing concern is not sexual liberty, but a college-graduate son or daughter who has moved back to live with mom because s/he can't find a job and therefore can't make student loan payments and rent at the same time.
Not in the Dems' world view is a woman who pays her mortgage every month but who know that her home's market value is less than the mortgage principal remaining, and stupidly thinks that this is more important to her future (and thus her voting) than getting morning-after pills. There is no room in Democrat gender-identity politics for a woman who has been married to one man for 35 years and so never thinks about getting free contraceptives or an abortion (that is, what Dems say is "basic health care") but who is intensely concerned with her elderly parents' net worth falling as inflation rises.
No, these women simply do not authentically exist in the Democrat universe. Such women simply have not heard the full message that there should be nothing more important to a woman than sex, sex, sex.
To the Democrat party, women are simply sex objects, though with political and statist rather than fleshly purposes. But objects is all they are. That's the real message that countless women get very well and strongly reject.

What irritates me is that no one even argues on whether or not "women" support the democrat position. Women's issues, war on women.... pro-life women are not women but rather androgynous sex-traitors. A woman is defined implicitly as being in no small part a marxist communist by virtue of her vagina.

I wasn't sure from the wording if he believes that it is morally wrong, or that it is wrong to interpret the Constitution that way. But he believes that moral "right" at the federal level trumps law at the state level.
He also believes that the federal government has a moral obligation to ban things that are against strict Catholic religious doctrine. He believe contraceptives themselves should be banned, for example. Not the banning of federal money to purchase them, but the fact that they are available at all is bad and is a reason for the crumbling of the moral fabric of the nation. As a Protestant (Episcopal), I have some serious problems with this.
He has stated that the states have a higher moral contract which trumps the constitution and he has also said that there is effectively no limit to federal government powers to regulate immoral activity. Now not all of these were said at the same time. They were on different subjects, but it gives a better idea of where this idiot's head is. The notion of there being no limit to federal government power was in the context of SOPA and the ability of the government to control what people do on the Internet. But if he believes the government has that power coupled with his statement on state constitutional powers being trumped by "moral right", it is clear this man is a far right statist.
I have no problems with someone who holds deep religious convictions. I have SERIOUS PROBLEMS with someone who would attempt to use government to enforce their personal deep religious convictions on the land as a whole.
If he doesn't think contraceptives are a good idea, fine, he doesn't have to use them in his family. He has the right to attempt to educate and persuade. He does NOT have the right to tell people who believe otherwise that they can not obtain them which he appears to believe the federal government has the power to do.
The man is a flat out lunatic.
Just google "crazy santorum" and look at some of the stuff he has said going all the way back to the 1990's. And also remind yourself that he had THE LOWEST job approval rating of any Senator by his constituents of any Senator ever in recorded. It is no wonder he lost his seat in the Senate with an approval rating in the 30's.
The more I dig into the stuff this man has said, he looks like either a maniac or an idiot. I haven't been able to decide yet which.

You've got that wrong. It's not that there's a "moral right" at the federal level - it's that there's a moral law that is more fundamental than either the federal or state level. Ex: The lack of legislation restricting slavery 200 years ago does not mean that American slavery was morally good. We don't all agree on what's moral law or not, but all of the gov't laws we do have are intended to enforce a moral law - the least common denominator that we (sort of) agree on.
The contraception stuff from Santorum isn't that he wants to ban the stuff. His opinion that he shared is that they cause harm to society, but he's also stated that he thinks the gov't should not ban them, either. Dock points for possibly alienating voters with a "crazy stance", but no need to put words into his mouth.

The notion that the state governments have all powers except those specifically prohibited by the constitution is wrong.
This is wrong. Powers not allocated to the federal gov't are reserved for the state and the people. The idea that each state can be its own fiefdom is wrong, because we can and will restrict what states can do, if they're doing something like enslaving a portion of their population.
If the state tramples on powers reserved to the people, then the state gov't needs to be smacked down, even if the constitution doesn't expressly say to do so. We the people can tell the federal gov't to do so, because that's our reserved power.
He has said the government should ban contraceptives. He has said the government should ban porn. The man is a little right wing statist tyrant no better than the left wing statist tyrants.
You're going to have to link me the source to accept what you're saying, because I'd like a chance to parse the actual words instead of taking your summary on faith.

Here's what was actually said:
"The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws."
If the law is on the books, shouldn't it be enforced? And if it's not enforceable, then perhaps it it needs to be stricken. The executive isn't supposed to pick and choose which laws he likes to enforce.
It's a valid criticism of Obama's governing style, and you turn it into a talking point about protecting our rights to pornography.
BTW, protecting doesn't need to mean "ban". It could mean restrict. We restrict alcohol (based on age, or while driving), for example - is that a ban on drinking?

I wouldn't go any smaller than a 16 gauge, though.
I'd hope that two or more cops would show up with pump action 12 gauge shotguns in that situation. My single-shot break action 12 gauge is fine for pheasants and stuff, but you want a lot more UMPH to bring down something that big. Wounding is just not good enough.

Parallel to the training of the body a struggle against the poisoning of the soul must begin. Our whole public life today is like a hothouse for sexual ideas and simulations. Just look at the bill of fare served up in our movies, vaudeville and theaters, and you will hardly be able to deny that this is not the right kind of food, particularly for the youth...Theater, art, literature, cinema, press, posters, and window displays must be cleansed of all manifestations of our rotting world and placed in the service of a moral, political, and cultural idea.
