Members of the Southern Miss pep band chanted "Where's your green card?" at Kansas State guard Angel Rodriguez at the game last night. Rodriguez is from Puerto Rico and is therefore a U.S. citizen.
Rick Santorum is defending his call for Puerto Rico to adopt English as endorser, delegate, and former senator Oreste Ramos defects. Says Santorum, Puerto Rico "needs to be a bilingual country, not just a Spanish speaking country." Um...
National security-type folks may be aware of the unusual group of folks that have been pushing in recent years for Iranian terrorist group MEK to be taken off the State Department terrorism list. The Treasury Department has opened an investigation into whether some of these folks, including former FBI Director Louis Freeh, have been accepting money from MEK, something prohibited by federal law.
Sprint is dumping LightSquared today. Sprint had offered to share infrastructure with the company if it managed to get FCC approval. Since such approval is not forthcoming in light of LightSquared devices' reported interference with GPS, Sprint is saying adios, mofos.
In gamer news, the long- and very long-awaited Diablo III is launching on May 15. There are also rumors that an Elder Scrolls MMOG is in the works.

In a previous thread a few days ago, I proposed a class action lawsuit against Steve Schmidt and Nichole Wallace by the contributors to the McCain/Palin campaign. It would seek to recover millions in campaign donations from Schmidt and Wallace for acting against the interests of the principles while they were paid employees.
This morning, Politico reported on uncovered emails from inside the campaign detailing actions to protect Schmidt from blame for the losing campaign. The email was dated 10 days before the election.

Democrats at it again in a State where they control the State, lock stock and barrel o' taxes. My prediction? Like CA, this tax increase will result in a net decrease in taxes collected as it drives wealthier residents to VA and kills the small business community as well. These idiots never learn.

A President can take action through the bully pulpit, like FDR, to get a compliant congress to enact laws willy nilly. Both FDR and Obama have done that. The President can take action through The Fed (which is supposed to be independent but is not) to control the money supply. That is one of the things that helped create the Great Depression and is now causing runaway inflation. The President can also kill the economy by having his regulatory agencies swamp the economy with job killing rules via executive fiat. No other President in history has done this as much as Obama.
As I said, this is a good article, but it doesn't go far enough.

I figured I'd link Santorum's defense of his statements. Call it a nod at "fair and balanced," since the Santorum supporters always accuse me of not giving him a fair shake. So, there ya go. Santorum defends English-language comment, noting that Puerto Rico should be a bilingual country, not a Spanish-speaking country.
Oh, shit, I see why you might think I'm trying to start something by repeating that particular Santorum defense.

I may have skipped one or two in there. At the Jeep House museum (dismantled during the Dr Z occupation), the retired line supervisor and shop steward who ran the place used to say, "Then we brought in a new owner."
God forbid that Cheerce-lee might have gone through a traditional managed bankruptcy. Why, they may have ended up with a foreign owner. Oh, wait. Long story short, there is no way in hell that the Jeep plant would have been idled by the loss of the parent company. Worst case would have been a Geely acquisition. What a blow that'd be.
And another thing, I think US presidents should at least be able to pronounce the names of former US presidents. It's not Rooth-erferd, asshole. Hey Hussein, know what the "B" stands for? Great stumping for Ohio votes, there, plus insulting a fellow Harvard Law grad. Wait'll you hear him try to say "Ulysses."

That's softpedaling it. It's not "English as the official language" that got attention. It's Santorum's basic ignorance of Puerto Rico (a country?), its languages (it is bilingual), the law (which does NOT require English as the "main language" before statehood), and his audience.
Posted by: Gabriel Malor at March 16, 2012 03:34 AM (+zL0z)
Well, just to be clear, I was referring to the fact that PR should be an independent country, not a state, because it's culture and language really aren't American, despite their current status. Furthermore, any country benefits from having well-educated, bilingual citizens, as long as it's understood that one language is dominant.

@50, 51.
Unresponsive. Consider that if Obama thought that Puerto Rico was a state, he was actually MORE accurate with his 57 states comment than Santorum calling it a country. The same Santorum who was a Senator for 6 years. Who grew up in America. Who we would presume would have a cursory knowledge of the United States and it's possessions.
I expect ideological and policy differences. I'm not willing to overlook stupidity or ignorance.

re the Puerto Rico statehood thing, back in April 2010 the House passed a bill to end run the regular method of admitting new states. The reason statehood never passes there is there are 3 choices, so getting to 50% is very tough. HR 2499 would have changed that. Fortunately, the bill died (or was killed) in the Senate.
Next week the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2499, the Puerto Rico Democracy Act, which gives the people of Puerto Rico the opportunity to vote on their political future including the possibility of becoming AmericaÂ’s 51st state.<snip>
This is troubling since the winner just needs to receive the most votes, not the majority (ie, Statehood could “win” with 34% of the vote.) Shouldn’t a strong majority of people support statehood before admission is considered – as was the case with both Hawaii and Alaska?

He might have meant['i] something uncontroversial, but he phrased it in such a way that it has caused an uproar in Puerto Rico.
I have seen all sorts of snark about Romney's gaffes (two Cadillacs, knowing NFL owners, etc.) but those gaffes were not insulting to an entire territory.
I collect Santorum statements that are insane (like he is the only person with Commander-in-Chief experience, Fox is shilling for Romney, etc.) and while he inevitably walks them back, they are not indicative of someone who is good at off-the-cuff remarks.
If you positively hate Romney, vote for Newt. At least his nutty stuff is entertaining and doesn't insult anyone but democrats.

I'm not so sure how I feel about this. If an adult was carrying a weapon and accidentally shot someone with it, wouldn't they be prosecuted? So if a child does it, how do we handle that. The crime (such as it is) has still been committed, but who is responsible.
In the current paradigm (with which I largely disagree, but it is the current paradigm) children in school barely qualify as human, so they're largely assumed not to be responsible (for anything, it sometimes seems). Granting some cognitive dissonance waivers (expelling kids for "fighting" who were defending themselves from physical aggression, for instance), that's the way schools operate.
If the kid isn't responsible, his parents must be. And, in honesty, it is their responsibility to make sure their kid a) knows enough about guns to know they're not toys or things to show-off at school and b) doesn't leave the house with a gun in his backpack.
If there was ever a case of criminal stupidity, this one seems to fit.

Its just a sad thing all the way around. The damn car should have been locked so the kid (or anyone else) couldn't get into it. Hell, I wouldn't have left it in the car to begin with, even if I had no kids. These things are too expensive to leave in a place where they can get stolen.
The guy with the pistol should be hit with negligent manslaughter if they have that in Washington State.

As for leaving the gun in the car- that's beyond stupid. And, like my wife says, beyond how much they cost, how bad would you feel if your negligence allowed your gun to be stolen, and then it was used to kill someone?

Plus it will keep the campaigning against Obama from starting prior to the convention, giving him a HUGE advantage, and fundaising will dry up until it's settled.

They STILL don't get that we're at war. I don't know what it will take to make them realize it, and soon the war will be over.

But he was old. I think it's easy to lose sight - on a partisan forum - that the average Joe/Jane bases their decision on considerations such as age and yes, hair. And who is less scary. Of course, in 2008 there was a population of upper middle class caucasian voters who were itching to expiate their white guilt. That's another consideration that gets lost in this cycle's GOP primary drama.

Early in his administration, Obama singled out the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution national competition as wasteful government spending . At the time, I was surprised that a 'Constitutional Law expert' would make that a priority. Now, it all makes sense.

The "establishment gentry" don't understand that we are in a war, because they aren't in it. Obamacare will never affect them or their loved ones, their accountants and lawyers will be able to circumvent any estate taxes, their sources of income are not salaries with immediate withholding at confiscatory rates, most of the laws are lobbied for and written so the laws do not affect them, and their gated communities and estates will always have armed security guards.
It is easy for them to want to get things done with their "friends across the aisle", because "they" are all natural "masters" looking out for the rest of us on the great big old plantation known as the USA!

Both parties try to appeal to the middle. The differences are that the donks run somebody waaaaay to the left of the majority of voters and then lie through their asses about what their administration will be like. The JEF's campaign was a complete load of shit about what a "uniter" he'd be when in reality he's the most partisan and polarizing piece of garbage that's ever occupied the White House.
The Repukes nominate somebody who's pretty far to the left as far as party membership goes and then kicks the right in the teeth throughout the campaign and says vote for me or you'll get blamed for the commiecrats winning. So we're fucked either way. I voted Repub in the Ohio primary for the first time because I'm tired of the in-state shit the Kevin DeWine keeps dishing out; in Commiehoga county it previously made more sense to vote in the donk primary just so I could have a choice in who eventually won the office here. But fuck that shit; I voted for tea party Repub steering committee member to end the horseshit and I just found out that they won. So fuck you DeWine. Even if I'm not happy about what's happening at the top of the shit heap at least a start has been made to get rid of the Roves in training at the state level.

The biggest jump in gasoline in more than a year accounted for about 80 percent of the increase in prices last month, leaving households with less money to spend on other goods and services. Federal Reserve policy makers say the advance in fuel costs will be temporary, and most see little risk inflation will flare out of control as unemployment exceeds 8 percent.

Getting a Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, etc requires bringing them up through the system, which means doing the hard work at the local level to insure that when the opportunity to challenge a RINO comes up, they are ready to do it, with the name recognition to succeed.
Constant agitation, ala the Red State philosophy, is of limited value except for rare cycles like 2010. Ace lectures us about Angle and O'Donnell all the time. The problem with those nominations is that when the opportunity to make a significant change (like 2010) came along, there was no one in those states ready to step up and take advantage (understandable in Delaware, but inexcusable in Nevada), meanwhile in Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Florida we had credible candidates ready.

It was the first kind of "illegal" porn I could come up with.
And "obscenity laws" are on the books (if you don't like them, have them changed) and they have nothing to do with most internet pron- which insulates itself with pretty standard "18 and older only. This is pron, so if you're not into that, don't click" sort of disclaimers.
So, yes, he's talking about already illegal porn. Which would mostly be kiddie porn, as far as I know, with the possibility of "publicly available" porn that doesn't require that you be 18 or older to view it, doesn't have disclaimers, etc.
As mama winger points out- Mittens takes nearly exactly the same position on his website, but we're hyperventilating over Rick's position.
I don't think pron is the Great Issue of our Time, and couldn't have cared any less if they hadn't addressed it at all (or addressed it with "This is so low on the list of current priorities that I'm not going to spend the brain-sweat necessary to form an opinion."), but neither of them did, and they both say basically the same thing.

It doesn't. Does this mean that Romney and Newt should be equally bashed as Santorum has been over their statements?
And if you disagree with those laws, fine- work to have them repealed. Or overturned, I suppose.
The point, though, is that people have been hyperventilating over "Rick Santorum's War on Porn!" when it was no such thing AND the other candidates are taking the same view he is. It was a hack attack when there are plenty of other things already available to disagree with Rick Santorum about.

Every politician has that same position on porn, and for some reason its only shocking if Santorum mentions it. Although I agree, he shouldn't mention it. Actually no politician needs to get involved. Mitt hit it on the head about the need for supervision, as long as he was talking about parental supervision and not government supervision.
I don't want my underage kid checking out porn, although shes a girl and I dont think they care too much about porn. I also don't want the government getting involved. A bunch of dumb asses, who probably visit the porn sites when they're not busy worrying if anyone else is.

National security-type folks may be aware of the unusual group of folks

President Barack Obama wants companies like Google and Facebook to reform their privacy practices.
But thatÂ’s not stopping his reelection campaign from tapping the rich data Internet companies hold on millions of potential voters.
Obama for America has already invested millions of dollars in sophisticated Internet messaging, marketing and fundraising efforts that rely on personal data sometimes offered up voluntarily — like posts on a Facebook page— but sometimes not.
And according to a campaign official and former Obama staffer, the campaignÂ’s Chicago-based headquarters has built a centralized digital database of information about millions of potential Obama voters.
It all means Obama is finding it easier than ever to merge offline data, such as voter files and information purchased from data brokers, with online information to target people with messages that may appeal to their personal tastes. Privacy advocates say itÂ’s just the sort of digital snooping that his new privacy project is supposed to discourage.

The actor and several activist colleagues (including Rep. Jim Moran, Enough ProjectÂ’s John Prendergast and Martin Luther King III) have arranged for a little non-violent civil disobedience. By standing on the embassyÂ’s private property, theyÂ’re likely to get cuffed, arrested and charged. Which is always the most interesting kind of celebvocate photo-op.

Let me see if I can summarize:
Puerto Rico is a country
Puerto Rico is not an independent country.
Puerto Rico is a nation
Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens
Puerto Rico has two languages. Most Puerto Ricans are not bi-lingual nor do a lot speak English. (English speakers 100,000; Spanish speakers 3+ million)
Puerto Ricans do not serve in the U.S. military in exceptionally high numbers.
Santorun said if PR wants to be s state they should make English their primary language (that would seem to be a polite way of sating they should not become a state but I do not care what Santorum may have meant by it)
Santorum will not endorse homosexuality in Puerto Rico should the islands become a state (I am making an assumption here.)
Puerto Rico has a thriving gay sex scene.
Puerto Ricans are 'fleeing' a poor economy.
Puerto Rico has an Olympic team.
Puerto Rico is not a country.
And Santorum does not endorse homosexuality, gay marriage, or ...
These will all be key issues in the campaign.

I'm really late so somebody already probably commented on the Washington state thing, but trust me, that mother (who is the one being charged) needs to be charged with something. I am not sure the gun charges are the best idea, though as a convicted felon she wasn't supposed to have them. But, the woman could win an award for worst mother ever.
The whole situation is really effed up. And now the girl who was shot, her father (who appears to be an amazing publicity hound, yes, your daughter's shooting was tragic but wow, do you have to be the star of every picture released?) has hired a sleeze attorney to file civil suit. Of course the boy's family has less than nothing so who is the guy going to sue? The school, the state, probably the gun manufacturer. Possibly the backpack manufacturer.
I wish I could coherently lay out the whole thing, but trust me, in this case I think the prosecuters were just reaching for any tool to take that mother down.

OK and not sure if anyone corrected this yet, but the girl didn't die. She's in serious condition but at this point still expected to live.
Here's more of the story so you understand the scope of the tragedy, the mom and dad were fuck ups, they lost custody of the boy who went to live with his grandmother who was providing him a steady and loving home. Sadly she died, so an Uncle took over custody of the boy but was allowing the father to live in the home. The boy was miserable. When he visited his mom and her new boyfriend, who apparently had a number of weapons around the house, he took a gun (the one from the glovebox theorizing I assume that it wouldn't be noticed). He was so miserable with his situation--and remember this is an 8 year old boy--that he stole the gun and took it to school because he was planning on running away and he thought he needed the gun for protection when he ran away.
So, at school, it was in his backpack, he dropped his backpack on the desk, and the gun went off, shooting his classmate. He was arrested (the image of an 8 year old boy in an orange prison jumpsuit was awful to see) and though his dad and Uncle showed up for him, his mother didn't. Thankfully an anonymous person posted the $50,000 bail for the boy. And, all the intelligent adults in the justice system for once prevailed and he got deferred judgment.

Officials at a German zoo said the life of a baby rabbit born without ears was cut short when a cameraman stepped on him while filming a news segment.
Uwe Dempewolf, director of the Limbach-Oberfrohna zoo, said the news crew was filming a segment Wednesday about Til, a rabbit born three weeks ago without ears, when the cameraman stepped on the animal and instantly killed it, Spiegel Online reported Thursday.
"We are all shocked. During the filming, the cameraman took a step back and trod on the bunny," Dempewolf said. "He was immediately dead, he didn't suffer. It was a direct hit. No one could have foreseen this. Everyone here is upset. The cameraman was distraught."We had planned a news conference for tomorrow and we wanted to market it via the media because rabbits without ears are pretty rare. But now this unfortunate event has occurred. The other five bunnies are right as rain. It is regrettable that he was the one who got stepped on," Dempewolf said.

An attorney for W. Carlton Weddington said he would enter the plea at an 11 a.m. arraignment.
Weddington, a Columbus Democrat, resigned his Ohio House seat Tuesday and surrendered to authorities. An indictment against him alleges he accepted all-expenses-paid trips to South Beach, Miami, and California's Napa Valley from a fake business entity set up by the FBI. The entity sought to exchange trips, cash and campaign contributions for legislation that Weddington would introduce.

The point, though, is that people have been hyperventilating over "Rick Santorum's War on Porn!" when it was no such thing AND the other candidates are taking the same view he is. It was a hack attack when there are plenty of other things already available to disagree with Rick Santorum about.
What's sad about this discussion is that Rick's stance is a criticism of OBAMA for NOT ENFORCING laws.
Apparently it's more important that Porn be Sacred rather than we have a president who enforces the laws that we have passed. I guess we have conservatives ("fiscons"?) who have no issue with laws that are arbitrarily enforced based on the whims of who's president.

http://runronpaul.com/interest/ breaking - news- athens-clarke-county-ga-republican-delegate-fraud/
that's the link from twitter, not tinyurl.
There were a lot of references to the story yesterday. There are a couple of articles talking about a meeting and the leadership not following protocol. But when I followed the twitter link I was surprised that it took me directly to the ron paul site, so I figured I'd just post it then, as it had more legitimacy than just the rumor and innuendo yesterday and the day before.

I just want to know why you bother to go on like you do. The Romeny-progressive bias is kinda profound and depth is accordingly nonexistent.

If Romney were not a fellow Mormon Beck would have had his picture up on the screen as a prime example of a Republican progressive.

Could be this guy is like many hyper puerto ricans who won't speak English. Like it's evil or something because we got sovereignty over them in the Spanish/American War.
It's the reasoning (but wrongly voiced) behind Santorum's bit about English being the Islands Primary language. Many PR's absolutely REFUSE to speak English. I ran into them at work and was glad to see them leave. Besides being childish about the language their attitudes about a whole lot of other things was poor to militant.
Puerto Rico can't manage a referendum on statehood because of these throwbacks.
Me, I say if they try to become a state again and fail, let them go. The Island has always been an economic drag, it's inhabitants are less than enthusiastic about the US (but boy they lurrvs that dollar and being US citizens. They can make the comparison with almost every other Caribbean Island and see the difference.) and haven't really much value for the US.
Let them go if they don't want to join.
OH and they also provide(d) enclaves of Spanish speakers that sheltered/encouraged illegals to flood the US by giving them an area they could hide in and work from and receive phony ID's and such.
