Happy Tuesday.

Ace wrote about the WaPo piece yesterday revealing that it was President Obama, and not Speaker Boehner, who blew up the debt talks, contrary to the talking points of both the Democrats and some of Boehner's "allies." Jim Pethokoukis notes that the true story also busts the accusation that Boehner pushed an $800 billion tax hike.

A group of students "disguised as penguins" broke into and vandalized a Texas highschool as a senior prank. Kids these days.

Politico, in what looks to be a series, presents the "hard truths" of ObamaCare. The summary:

(1) Some people wonÂ’t get to keep the coverage they like;
(2) Costs arenÂ’t going to go down;
(3) ItÂ’s just a guess that the law is going to pay for itself;
(4) “The more they know, the more they’ll like it” isn’t happening.

Coincidentally, those four things are exactly what critics of the law said would happen.

John Carter is set to lose Disney about $200 million after insanely bad marketing and lukewarm reviews. After Disney's not-entirely-irrational fear of letting audiences know the film is set on Mars, they were left with the completely bland title "John Carter," which appeared to be about a man who runs around shirtless with CGI characters.

Markets in everything. Google started to charge websites for the use of Google Maps. Websites found new map services.

Companies and government agencies are now routinely asking job applicants for their Facebook usernames and passwords. Something to be aware of.

1 BBC Radio reported early this morning that the gun used in the Toulouse school murders was also used in the earlier killings of the French soldiers on the street.

They do not have a physical description because the shooter wore a full-face helmet and wa riding a high-speed motor scooter.

They are currently trying to profile the person.

I have my suspicions.  The school was Jewish and the soldiers were black or North African.

It's all about results, when you have a moderate like Cantor questioning Boehner's abilities as speaker you have no choice but to wonder about him. That said, when comes to congressional leadership our real problem is in the Senate. For five years under McConnell's leadership I can't remember one thing he did that worked out favorable to the GOP or the country. He's thinks deals go one way, the Democrats make demands and he then sees what he can do for them.

For some reason, there are people that will put stuff on Facebook that will get them in serious trouble.  Example: we had a probationary Patrolman that posted video of his cruiser speedometer while he was driving over 100 mph -- the problem was that he wasn't on an emergency run.  I don't know how command discovered this, but the rookie lost his job.

During the fallout of this drama, every police officer was asked to show their Facebook account.  My answer was, "What's a Facebook?"

Yeah, get off my lawn.

I hadn't signed in to my Facebook account in over a year and my wife and I both deleted ours. Me because of Fuckerberg's public statements that he was actively working against online privacy, and her mainly because of nosy "friends" and relatives.

Initially we saw it as a combination diary/bulletin board, but all the shitbags you're even mildly acquainted with/related to view it as on opportunity to try to force personal information out of you.  Motherfucker, if I wanted to talk to you, I would have called you.

Now, i know that my HR dept looks at Facebook profiles, but they don't tell applicants or ask for login IDs. If you're smart enough to keep your profile private, you get a bye to the next round.

They keep changing the darn thing and somehow I get comments from friends of friends,  so that the whole thing is a meaningless mishmash of stuff people I don't even know are posting.

Plus ads from magazines and authors plugging books.

Now many newspapers have been making their comments appear on Facebook,  which means that I have to make sure I am not logged on when I reply to an article,  otherwise my comment appears on my page,  which is not what I want since I am trying to not be political there.

The whole thing is just a pain in the neck.

I had heard some examples of Henry Ford having a mandatory bed time for his employees among other things which I now forget. Kind of makes the request for a Facebook password seem benign. And I'm kind of reminded of a job I used to have moving pallets of ready to assemble furniture around a factory. When I worked there I was FOR drug testing because it meant there might be churn above me. Then a board fell off a load and they wanted to test me (as per policy when a board fell off a load). As I'm standing there telling the nurse that the test better be accurate I asked why alcohol wasn't on the list of drugs to test for as it would be the most common reason for an accident. She didn't know.

Here it is.

--------

The Ford Sociological Department was created to administer the plan by sending field agents into the community to visit workers at home to determine the quality of their home lives. It was believed that influencing the behavior of employees at home would turn them into better workers. All employees over 22 were eligible for the plan, which included a shortened work day from nine to eight hours in addition to the opportunity to earn five dollars per day. In order for a worker to be eligible to receive his share of the company's profits he "must show himself to be sober, saving, steady, industrious and must satisfy the...staff that his money will not be wasted in riotous living." Workers who didn't comply risked being payed half as much for performing the same work as their co-workers, and could eventually lose their jobs.

On reading that article again, I wonder why HR departments think asking a person to log in during an interview is any better than asking for a password directly.  After all, any decent company is going to have some time of monitoring system on internet usage and passwords don't necessarily automotically clear out of a cache.  Why on earth would I believe that the person doing the interview will clear the cache?  Oh that also brings up an issue that if I'm logging in and the cache isn't cleared every time, well, congratulations!  You've just handed over other people's passwords!  Seriously, this whole area is a bomb waiting to go off.  That's not even touching the EEOC issues brought up when reviewing a profile.

82 >>Kind of happy that Disney is scheduled to take a major hit just before the election though.

Ditto.

In 1984 Disney shareholders Sid Bass and Roy E. Disney hired former Paramount CEO Michael Eisner to head Disney. Eisner rapidly remade Disney into what Roy Disney described as a “rapacious and soulless” company. Eisner vastly expanded Disney theme parks and acquired ABC television and Miramax Films.

In violation of the values of Walt Disney and heartland America, he aggressively promoted homosexuality in Disney theme parks and productions. Hence the enormous perversion of Walt Disney's vision that makes their twisted creativity possible.

There, I said it.

83 Sense the mechanism of sucess for Obamacare was to "bend the cost curve down", which was supposed to lower the costs for everyone to allow for expanded government coverage, and that mechanism is shown to be a failure, isn't the prudent thing to do is to repeal the whole thing?

Posted by: President Chet Roosevelt at March 20, 2012 04:37 AM (wKnGl)

84 Yeah, I never got on to Facebook.  I do have a Linked-In profile, but I don't even really keep it very up-to-date.

And if a prospective employer ever asked to see my private stuff (which would be about the only reason to log into my profile) I'd end the interview immediately and leave.  I want to work for you, not be your freakin' slave.  What I do on my time is my business- if that means I can't work for you, I'll find another employer.

Of course, I can say that as a gainfully employed person- what I'd do if I'd been looking for a job for several months?  I'm not so sure- luckily it's never come up.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) SMOD 2012 at March 20, 2012 04:38 AM (8y9MW)

85 Oh that also brings up an issue that if I'm logging in and the cache isn't cleared every time, well, congratulations! You've just handed over other people's passwords! Seriously, this whole area is a bomb waiting to go off. That's not even touching the EEOC issues brought up when reviewing a profile.

Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at March 20, 2012 08:33 AM (VtjlW)

That's not how it works, unless you are saving your password on the browser. Or the employer is logging keystrokes. When you are logging into FB/gmail/whatever, the page is encrypted using SSL(https). So whatever traffic is being sent across the wires is encrypted, both ways.

91 I seriously doubt Walt Disney was anti-gay.  If you ever see the dancing elephants dream sequence in "Dumbo" you will know what I mean.  Like Nixon, however, he probably felt it was a private matter not to be discussed  and certainly not worth losing a job over.

And 'yay, like pursuit of happiness.' You know what would make me happy? Free birth control." Romney: "You know, let me tell you, no no, look, look let me tell you something. If youÂ’re looking for free stuff you donÂ’t have to pay for, vote for the other guy. ThatÂ’s what heÂ’s all about, okay? ThatÂ’s not, thatÂ’s not what IÂ’m about." 98 I get more than enough of this face while shaving, and I have plenty of books, in several types of media.
One of the advantages of being a conservative is the absence of temptation to be drawn into the newest thing every time, to be part of a group.

It didn't take long to find out about the downside of Facebook. Just the name Social Media or Networking sounded just like a lot of other Orwellian co-opts.

I'll admit that all but one of my immediate family has passed, as well as my only close friend so I haven't been pressured to join like most, but I'm really glad that I didn't.

Absolutely. And that's not new.

My grandfather was a policeman in Israel before it took its independence. He would ride alone into Arab villages to keep order. He spoke fluent arabic and was well-liked by the population, but he told me that he would never, ever turn his back on any of them, and he always had his pistol either in his hand or loose in the holster.

Trusting an Arab or a Muslim is often a losing proposition.

151 Howdy pahd-nahs! Re the Facebook thing, I think there's some misunderstanding in some quarters about how it works. Some folks don't seem to get that you can set levels of access. You aren't broadcasting everything to the entire planet (if your settings are correctly adjusted). I find it useful for keeping touch with friends who are spread out across the country and for pursuing specific interests, such as tracking collie related sites.

I'm sure that's true to some extent, but I haven't seen any of that confusion here.  We've been specifically talking about the people who post inappropriate/stupid things on their public pages, and why it's not okay for an Employer to require you to show them your private page (or force you to log in or hand over your password).

158 Facebook is also another way I keep in touch with the black community. My old highschool classmates post about this or that, and it's interesting what causes they are resharing vs white folk.

Currently there is a lynch-attempt of some dude named Zimmerman who shot some black kid, claiming self-defense. It's a little bizarre because it seems like an awfully racist campaign. The police are investigating; they just don't want to wait for due process.

Yeah.  We'll have plenty of run-off, but it should all go into area lakes and such.  Won't be awesome for foundations and such, like a longer but more gentle rain would be, but it'll help ease the drought.

>>I told him" I don't vote for marxist cocksuckers, now Get off my lawn".

The shock of last weekÂ’s CBS News/New York Times poll showing the Marxist cocksucker at just 41% was well understandable. Incumbent presidents donÂ’t get reelected with approval numbers at or below 45%.

Nevertheless, the results turned out to be a matter of not being able to see the forest for the trees. Since we could not have expected the ashen faced leftists at the New York Times to point out the other bad news in their poll, adding to their misery seems highly appropriate.

Hidden in the report was the fact that a staggering 80% of those polled said they are NOT better off today than they were four years ago. News flash for the “expert pundits”: people vote their pocketbook in normal times and these are far from “normal times.” JEF is a man who dampens enthusiasm for his own base and builds enthusiasm to vote among his opponents.

Anyone who would argue Obama can turn these numbers around doesnÂ’t drive a car or have a religious affiliation.

Speaking of batshittery, any of you following this Trayveon (?) Mitchell case in Florida?  Predictably, the media's will play this fucking story nonstop until Rubio's the Veep nominee, and then they'll turn it over to Obama to run with.

Didn't get a chance to vote in Illinois (I"m sure someone took my place), but I wouldn't know who I'd vote for until I walked into the booth.  Probably Noot...

Another thing (damn, the coffee's strong today)--anyone notice that since Ballsey went on his shooting spree in Afghanistan last weekend, there haven't been any more shootings or attacks on US personnel?  This guy's a hero if he a) can terrify the subhumans and their larvae into submission, and/or b) can force the US forces into a withdrawal and subsequent immolation of Kafiristan.  Talk about the wrong fucking war.

170 #126  There is now a law that you cannot have a health savings account unless you have a health insurance policy.  And  companies will nto asell a policy even with a huge deductible.  Four years ago my husband and I had a policy with anthem.  $500 per month for both of us with a $10,000 deductible and a health savings account.

Anthem would not give us that policy back,  even though we never made a claim against it.

This is all because when my husband went to work for a South African company he was told that we had insurance through a company in the UK.  After he had worked for them for 6 months,  the UK company announced they would no longer cover people in the USA (this was at the time that Obamacare was passed).   His company said well,  they would cover me through their US offices.  Nope, insurance cannot cross state lines (another thing they refused to put in Obamacare).   And I applied to a bunch of companies and in every case had to undergo intrusive,  personal cross-exams by underwriters who treated me like I was a criminal.

So I just gave up. I only have 1 1/2 years until I get medicare,  crappy though it is.  I pay cash for my meds ($255/month) and get some help on the costs through discounts from evil corporate drug companies and evil Kroger pharmacy.  My doc gives me a cash discount on my check-ups.

Anyone who is over 50 and has ANYTHING wrong with them is going to have trouble.  Insurance companies are going to have to take everyone in a few years,  so to cushion the blow they are not taking anyone who might make a claim now.

Just another reason I want Obama voted out,  and I will vote for whoever is the GOP candidate.

William A. Jacobson, associate clinical professor at Cornell Law School, said that some anti-Walker protesters were angered by the studentsÂ’ move, calling it “hypocrisy.” Jacobson wasnÂ’t having any of that:

Excuse me, did the students take over the State Capitol and refuse to leave, set up camp, damage walls, threaten legislators,  crash through police lines, encourage , sit down in hallways blocking access, pound in buses carrying legislators, lock themselves  to railings, or do any of the other destructive things the anti-Walker protesters did for weeks on end last year?  (added) Oh, and did I forget the death threats?

By the way, just days after the students visited the Capitol, Sheboygan Lutheran won the Div. 5 state basketball championship on a last-second three-point shot.

An interesting letter in my local liberal paper:
----------

Planned Parenthood has compared mandatory ultrasounds to rape. This is even more stupid than it seems on the surface.

Millions of women routinely undergo ultrasounds in this country, and I have never heard one of those women compare an ultrasound to rape. In addition, 99 percent of Planned ParenthoodÂ’s early abortions are preceded by a trans-vaginal ultrasound. So, Planned Parenthood is inadvertently accusing itself of rape.

Ultrasounds are done before surgical abortions. All surgical abortions are trans-vaginal and far more traumatic to a woman than any ultrasound could ever be.

In more than 30 years of medical practice, I have delivered about 140 babies. I have advised numerous women to have ultrasounds done, and the ultrasounds have had no negative repercussions. However, I have treated many women for the complications due to abortion.

However, it is hard to envision pulling the lever for a guy (Romney) who seems intent on not just crushing opponents (that, as you point out, represent virtually no threat) but also seems intent on putting base conservatives in their place. Romney needs to start wooing primary voters. Bear in mind that while Gibbons was an excellent writer, he was doing so in the eighteenth century. There has been an awful lot of historical and archeological research done since his time.

I would disagree pretty vociferously with the notion that the fighting spirit and competence of the Roman Army declined between Ceasar's day and the beginning of the fifth century, for example. Also, the German tribes changed pretty dramatically during that time, which meant that they were a lot more difficult to defeat, etc., etc.

217 I would disagree pretty vociferously with the notion that the fighting spirit and competence of the Roman Army declined between Ceasar's day and the beginning of the fifth century, for example

I think that may be a language thing, more than an actual disagreement, though.  I don't think anyone would say that (in modern terms) the fighting spirit and/or competence of any given soldier had declined, rather general morale (which would also be "fighting spirit") and strategy ("competence") were, indeed, worse.

Other changes were factors as well, but I think the main point- that historical discoveries haven't changed- is that Roman Society's descent into decadence had a major deleterious effect on the Roman Empire.  That effected the Legions (especially the Officers) as much as any other part of the Empire.  The exact nature of that "deleterious effect" on the Army may be up for debate, of course.

Santorum subbed for William Bennett's radio show a bunch. Know one person who got to like him from hearing him on that.

Still annoyed that this process isn't over before I have to--er, get to vote on Saturday...

@100

I disagree; I think Romney gave a perfectly acceptable answer.  It was concise and accurately made a distinction between the conservative and liberal/progressive philosophies.

Also, I've been pretty lukewarm about Romney so don't throw any Romneybot stuff at me.  I just don't see any problem with his answer.

222 "Romney needs to start wooing primary voters. If the nomination is essentially a lock for him, there is really no reason to not try to appeal to us"

Yeah it doesn't work that way. As long as Santorum and Newt are out there raising money and going after Romney he has to play the game. He can't just start running against Obama now, that would piss off more of the people you claim he should be targeting. So the charade continues.

226 Yeah it doesn't work that way. As long as Santorum and Newt are out there raising money and going after Romney he has to play the game. ------------ Why? You state that voters who still back Santorum are *delusional* for thinking he can win. Why isn't Romney delusional for treating Santorum like he's a serious challenger? You really aren't being consistent. Moreover, it's clear Newt supporters are 50:50 split between Santorum and Romney. There is absolutely no reason to not at least try to appeal to some of them, particularly the ones who prefer Newt over Romney primarily over Mitt's history on Masscare. The longer Team Romney attacks the lame duck candidacies of Newt and Santorum, the more it reinforces that "shut up that's why" justification for his campaign and the perception that he rejects core principles that much of his Party embraces.

I don't know either way.  What jumps out to me is the corruption and rot that set in and flourished under each successive emperor.  Each bending of the rules, every relaxation of discipline to serve the expediency of the moment seemed to hollow out the empire  just a little bit more.

Bullshit, I'm just a guy writing on the internet, Romney ain't. He can't just decide to ignore the campaigns and supporters of the other candidates. That kind of arrogance would be far more harmful then competing against them. So he plays the game.

Posted by: lowandslow at March 20, 2012 06:13 AM (GZitp)

234 I think that Rome was using a lot of mercenaries toward the end also, and get this, the taxes had gotten so high that there was a decrease in revenue, the landowners just quit producing crops, which caused the empire to not be able to provide armies where it needed them. It's a very complicated fiscal model that actually caused the decline. I think we're doing a grand job recreating it though.

237 I think Mitt is so wrapped up in this martyrdom thing -- that everyone who opposes his nomination is a Mormon-hater -- that he just can't bring himself to try to win over people outside his core supporters. He has known all along what he needed to do -- vigorously and unambiguously repudiate Masscare as an epic failure -- but he refuses to do it. Things like his not going to 'light my hair on fire' remark reveal that he believes that a sizable chunk of the Party whose votes he needs are extremists. That's why so many of us are resisting supporting him. He's not comfortable with conservatives. I wish he would snap out of this mode he's in and start acting like he wants to represent all of us, because the way he's acting now is killing voter enthusiasm and jeopardizing ousting Obama in the Fall.

Mitt and Santorum will both get a good deal of the votes, so go with Newt.  Anything that helps take this to Tampa without a winner brings us one step closer to a new nominee that can excite the base.

Posted by: jwest at March 20, 2012 06:24 AM (FdndL)

242 I don't trust Gingrich because his earlier deeds, including the global warming commercial and his support for an insurance mandate tells me that he's a Statist deep down.

I don't want to vote for Romney because I think he's a big phony and our John Kerry, and I don't like Santorum because he doesn't have the executive experience I think is important and also because I sense pander from the guy.

Posted by: Kensington at March 20, 2012 06:27 AM (uaEZS)

243 Maybe Gingrich is the guy, though, since they all very much suck.

Posted by: Kensington at March 20, 2012 06:28 AM (uaEZS)

244 Or maybe I'll just write-in Sarah Palin.

Posted by: Kensington at March 20, 2012 06:30 AM (uaEZS)

245 250 Maybe Gingrich is the guy, though, since they all very much suck. ------- To me Gingrich has the biggest accomplishments under his belt, which helps to mitigate the mistakes he's made. He also has the longest record. Romney has many more deviations from orthodoxy in a much shorter period of time. And I think Gingrich does the best at expressing core conservative principles when he's on his game. So he's useful from that standpoint.

Posted by: Y-not at March 20, 2012 06:33 AM (5H6zj)

246 No, I can't write in Sarah Palin. As much as I'd like to vote for her, she didn't run, so why throw that vote away?

I'll vote against Obama in November, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to make the cynical "electable" choice today. So since Gingrich is the one who does the most to combat the Leftist narrative, I guess I'll vote for him.

That is, he does the most to combat Leftist narratives when he's not making global warming commercials with Nancy Pelosi.

Oy. Freaking. Vey.

Thank you SO MUCH, GOP, you stupid, stupid party.

248 @253 One thing about Gingrich (and Santorum, frankly) is that IF they win, it will be BECAUSE of conservatives. If Mitt wins, it will be DESPITE conservatives. So I think we buy a tiny bit more loyalty with either Gingrich or Santorum. Mitt has shown absolutely no willingness to (or ability to) listen to conservatives. He really has run an extremely arrogant campaign -- almost Obama-like. I am steeling myself for ABO in November, but even if Romney manages to beat Obama, I do not expect to be particularly happy with his presidency. And I think he'd be a one-termer.

250 lowandslow, hope springs eternal. The only path towards having soemone other then these three stooges is a floor fight. We probably still get stuck with Nixon II, but there remains a chance. Additionally, a floor fight will force the media to cover us; the day after a Romney clinch, he will have to buy every second of coverage and the convention will only get mentioned on C-SPAN and local traffic radio. An exciting convention gives the 'pubs a chance to define the issues with everyone watching, not water it down in endless debates.

257 Saw John Carter with the whole family, even the wife who had to be dragged to it she was so uninspired by the prospect. Everybody hands down loved it, except for me who only half-heartedly loved it. That's because I read the book, to which the film has only a tangential relationship. And I think that's the film biggest problem, btw. It could have been much better had they simply followed the book. The whole civil war thing is maybe one sentence in the book, it's in the noise, yet Disney made it a big theme complete with Union imprisonment, ex-wife and flashbacks. People heard "Civil War dude on Mars? Nah. Too screwy."
