Happy Wednesday.

Fandango reports that the Hunger Games has sold out almost 2,000 theaters in advance of Friday's release, making it the top-selling franchise opener and non-sequel in Fandango's nearly 12-year history. I don't really know what the movie's about, except that it's a post-apocalyptic to-the-death reality show (like Rollerball, Death Race, the Running Man, etc.) with teens, but the kids love it and it sounds like this is supposed to be either the next Harry Potter or the next Twilight.

Analysts say the Fed fudged its "stress test" for two TARP banks, so they could be green-lighted to repay their outstanding TARP loans. Although analysts and, apparently, the banks' shareholders thought Regions Financial and Zions Bankcorp. would fail the stress test, the Fed gave them better grades than many of their larger rivals.

This comes with the BREAKING NEWS caveat that what is reported may change rapidly or be corrected: French police are in a shooting standoff with the Islamist jack-hole who killed French soldiers and Jews. They have orders to take the 24 year-old alive, probably because of reports that he wasn't working alone.

Venerable bands KISS and Motley Crue are getting together for a 40-show U.S. tour. They swear this is not a f***ing joke.

Ron Paul has declined Secret Service protection because, he says, Secret Service is welfare. He was on Leno, so maybe he was joking?

1 Good Morning Morons.  I'm back and today is Wednesday, March 21, 2012.  On this day in 1556 Thomas Cranmer was burned at the stake as a "heretic".  He was a leader in establishing the Church of England and the protestant reformation in England. When Mary I took the throne and restored Catholicism to England he was arrested and charged with treason and heresy.  This psalm 156:3 is reinforced;  "Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help."  All of the turmoil surrounding the war between the Protestants and Catholics in England is the major reason for the freedom of religion clause in the first amendment.

2 The big news of today is the Mutt win in IL, as expected.  However, all the polling proved wrong.  It wasn't even close. 47% v 35% and Noot was even a factor with a mere 8%.  Crazy Uncle beat him with 9%.  Racist Rock Perry got 1% even though he wasn't in the race. Lets have some more debates.  We don't know Mutt's position on phony racist rocks at campgrounds in the middle of nowhere.

Next up is LA which has been polling as an easy win for Sanatarium.  But I will guarantee the MFM, including Fox, will not play it up as much as IL.  I'm glad I get Fox Business now so I don't have to look at them kissing Mutt's ass all day.

11 Jonah Goldberg talks about federalism.  A process that is at the core of our Constitution and a process that has been effectively dead since the mid sixties thanks to a liberal court. Here is this quote:

Quote:

The problem for conservative and libertarian federalists is that whenever we talk about federalism, the Left hears "states' rights" - which is then immediately, and unfairly, translated into, "Bring back Bull Connor."
End

I really hate that bull shit term "States rights".  I have been hearing it for a long damn time and, like Crony Capitalism" it is the wrong term to use which is common among Dems.  It is not States Rights, it IS Federal Government limitations.  The powers of the States are many and not defined while the powers of the federal government are few and defined.

13 No link but Fox Business is reporting a little known thing about the new Ipad. When running it on 4G networks it rips through your assigned bandwidth much faster than the old Ipad on 3G, thus putting a lot of people in the $30/min penalty region.  They also said the networks were helping to subsidize the price of these new ipads.  Gee one wonders why.  They said the solution was to run them only in areas with free wi-fi.

20 "Record low turnout" is wrong. The Republican turnout this year (over 900,000) was actually larger than in 2008 (just under 900,000).

Good questions. We could ask the same ones of the Wrong Reverend Wright, except for the church part, that we already know. 37 I've been listening to the audio books of the Hunger Game series while I've been painting. They are quite good. I'm not sure how they will transfer to film and, as far as being for kids, have a lot of death/gore. What I liked about them is that in the story the "Capital" has conquered the rest of what is left of the US and is a totalitarian state. This is the story of the revolution. Our heroine is an expert with the bow, neither long nor cross.

50 Regarding Hunger Games, Gabe, I think you're right about that. We really don't know which direction this one takes. The Potter series had/has widespread crossover appeal, whereas Twilight more or less became a thing for the girls. I've taken an informal poll of 16 year old females (sample size = 1), and Potter continues to enjoy some popularity to this day, while Twilight is close to being hated. What I've been told (by said 16 year old) is that Hunger Games is ok, but not worth all the fuss. She read a couple of the books, but isn't willing to wait in line for new ones when they come out, and certainly isn't going crazy to see the movie. We'll see.

The events of February 26 reported in the media are also totally inaccurate. Out of respect for the on-going investigation, I will not discuss specifics. When the true details of the event become public, and I hope that will be soon, everyone should be outraged by the treatment of George Zimmerman in the media."

The Hunger Games trilogy was good. Very good. It's targeted at young adults but contains very mature subject matter.

It's extremely bleak and there is a lot of not only kids killing each other with edged weapons, but kids being horrifically killed by booby traps built into the arena by the government.

The larger themes of totalitarianism and the decadence and pampered sloth of the ruling elite made it interesting enough to tolerate the teen romantic angst angle.  The world of Panem could have been fleshed out more; there is no mention of other countries or of how the USA fell. You only know what the characters know, which is fuck-all, because the only thing the Capitol is willing to share is the heel of a jackboot.

Highly recommend.

Yes.  He thinks everyone should see that little girl fleeing in terror as he grabs her and puts a bullet in her head.

The police have orders to take him alive,  because they think he had accomplices and they want to beat it out of him.  His mother, sister, and brother have already been arrested.

Not just the kids.  My wife and I both read it and liked it.  My wife has read the other two in the series.  I hadn't realized they were coming out as movies before I read the first one, so now I'm torn- I want to know what happens, but I hate reading a book before the movie comes out.  The movie always sucks in comparison.  If I just watch the movie first, it doesn't suck so bad.

88 The Fox report about the iPad 4g data is a little misleading.  You pay for a fixed amount of data whether its 4g or 3g.  Yes, you can max out your 4g quota much faster if you're trying, but you consume no more data for the same content as you do on 3g.  Its like complaining that you can drink a glass of soda faster through a larger straw.  Sure, you can, but its still the same amount of soda.

Also, unless you specifically enroll in a post-paid plan on Verizon rather than one of the normal pre-paid plans (and there's no reason to do this really) you get notified before you hit your cap and can either buy more data or your 4g is shut off until your regular billing date.

It isn't some big conspiracy to generate massive bills by causing you to unknowingly blow past your data cap.

The lone gunman had mowndown at close range a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school, wounding several others. He was thought to be the same killer who a few days earlier had murdered three black French paratroopers in two separate attacks. A killer who targeted Jews and blacks – must be a far-right white racist, right?

Wrong. The suspect who the French police have now cornered turns out to be a jihadi Islamic terrorist which self-declared links to al Qaeda, who has made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the past. Well, thereÂ’s a surprise.

It was a set-up to turn public opinion away from the peaceful Muslims who have immigrated to the South of France and who are building wonderful, close-knit communities where they can live their lives peacefully while coexisting with the native French population (as long as they keep their filthy whore women off the streets and don't sell pork).

Ain't that the truth.  More than that, if they can they'll show a montage of pictures- from that 12th birthday through graduation just to reinforce the idea.

Conversely, if the criminal is a white guy, the only picture they show is the creepiest looking mugshot they can find of the guy.

Personally, I think anyone not immediately complying with whatever a police officer says is asking for trouble- up-to and including getting shot.  They're in a profession where they could get killed for pulling someone over- I don't want them trigger happy, but I'm not (as a rule) going to second guess a cop who shoots a suspect without a lot of evidence suggesting actual bad behavior.

133 This "antisemitic" Algerian-French killer targeted Muslim and Jew. The timing of intolerant equal opportunity slaughter was politically opportune for maximum effect.

“We must put an end to this growing climate of intolerance.”
François Bayrou, the centrist candidate for President of France
--

The cold-blooded nature and apparent extreme racist motive for the attacks have shocked France and unsettled political leaders in the midst of what had been a no-holds-barred campaign for next monthÂ’s presidential election.

François Molins, the Paris prosecutor overseeing what has been classified an antiterrorist investigation, said investigators were working urgently to identify and find the killer, who he noted had established a pattern of killing every four days. Mr Molins said no line of inquiry had been ruled out, including the possible link to a group of neo-Nazi paratroopers ejected four years ago from the same regiment as the three dead soldiers. He said the killer’s actions were premeditated and well prepared, including knowing the racial origin and religion of his victims. He confirmed the three soldiers killed were all Muslim.

FINANCIAL TIMES
--

Of Mohammed Merah suspected of killing seven people, French Interior Minister Guéant said the suspect claimed to be a member of Al Qaida and to have killed the students at the Jewish school Monday to "avenge" the deaths of Palestinian children, and killed the three soldiers of North African descent because of France's military intervention in Afghanistan.

138 Toulouse, France (CNN) -- About 300 police officers surrounded an apartment in the south of France on Wednesday, trying to coax a man whom authorities called a self-styled al Qaeda jihadist to surrender after a series of shootings that left seven people dead.

A prosecution official in Paris named the suspect as Mohammed Merah, 23. He was born in Toulouse, said Elisabeth Allanic, a magistrate at the Prosecutors Office.
The suspect is accused of killing seven people in the last 10 days: a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school on Monday, and three soldiers of north African origin who had recently returned from Afghanistan in two earlier incidents.

All these commercial versions of PBS (History, Discovery, etc) have grossly simplified programming. How many more WW2 shows can they air? Half their remaining stuff now is about Nostrodamus and Ancient Aliens. The same shows float up on several of these channels. Worse, because of the commercials, half the shows consist of recaps of what was just shown before the break. Equally annoying, the history shows often speak about a subject but the illustrative image on the screen is actually something different: all the time, they'll talk about King X but have Y's image on screen. Or the wrong city. Or show Charlemagne standing in an 18th century baroque church. Stupid crap, like that.

The SCFOAMF is going to lose the election. What doom awaits after that? I'm not going to fret or borrow trouble. I am going to be walking on sunshine for months after he loses. This great mistake, like all great mistakes is going to be corrected. American's are going to correct it. Again, things will probably be shitty, just like now, just without The SCFOAMF.

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A Florida Atlantic University student was caught on video threatening to kill her professor and several classmates.

The incident was captured by several students in class on their iphones and already the video has gone viral. The outburst so violent, the student had to be removed from class by two FAU employees.

The violent outburst occurred in the middle of an evolution class at FAU in Boca Raton. An outburst students say starts while Professor Steven Kajiura is reviewing for a midterm.

"They were talking about natural selection. They were talking about peacocks and how females choose their mates by their most feathers and the woman started asking about how that killed all black people," said one FAU student.

Students say that's when the girl snaps, ranting and threatening to kill Professor Kaijura and several of her classmates.

"You better shut up before I kill you," the student yelled to her professor on the video.

160 151 108 Someone needs to start a channel for people with an interest in actual history, science, etc.

Amen.

But lose the House?  What the fuck?  I wouldn't trust an insider for anything.  For one thing, he's an insider.  Therefore, he lives in the DC elitist bubble where anyone to the right of Obama is considered too scary and gauche.  For another thing, he did what people have to do to become an insider... and while I don't know the specifics, I can guess that it was probably illegal, immoral, unethical, and icky.

218 In a reprise of the Medicare wars triggered by last yearÂ’s budget debates, senior citizen and civil rights advocates today announced an astro-turf lobbying and ad campaign assailing House Budget Chairman Paul RyanÂ’s proposed budget.

“Domestic priorities will have to be drastically slashed” under the Ryan plan, said Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of the blood sucking Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, at a “prebuttal” rally outside of the American Enterprise Institute, where the Wisconsin Republican presented his budget plan this morning.

Waving pre-printed black and yellow signs that read “Hands Off My Medicare” and “Hands Off My Medicaid,” organizers at the event pledged to revive the town hall meetings that followed Ryan’s release last year of a budget plan that would have partially privatized Medicare.

As it turns out, I read the first and third, each for a different college class.  The author is a Marxist (but what can you expect from college professors' assigned readings?) but I actually learned what was going on from reading him.  Which is pretty remarkable.

225 Waving pre-printed black and yellow signs that read “Hands Off My Medicare” and “Hands Off My Medicaid,” organizers at the event pledged to revive the town hall meetings that followed Ryan’s release last year of a budget plan that would have partially privatized Medicare.

And this is why the US is doomed.  When our seniors are so selfish that they'd rather impoverish their great-grand-children than seriously consider any changes to "their" Medicare and Medicaid (or Social Security), what hope does the Republic have?

227 I read the Hunger Games trilogy.  Not my usual type of reading, but I couldn't put them down.  In this talke, there are 12 districts of people (working drones) who serve The Capital (the elites).  The Hunger Games are fight to the death arena games created by the elites for their entertainment.  Two youths from each district are required annually to fight in this bloody game and it is all televised so the elite can watch the carnage on TV.  The last book in the trilogy deals with the revolution and distruction of The Capital commies.  In the end, they vote to create a representative government.  Great reading.

The conspiracy theorists wouldn't believe it anyway.  There are actually two good introductory books, *Freemasonry for Dummies* and *A Complete Idiots Guide to Freemasonry*, that are both written by brother masons.  I have the good fortune to count one of them, Brent Morris, as a good friend.  You will occaisionally see Brent in those shows rebutting some bullsh!t statement some cretin made about the fraternity.

The secrets have to deal with modes of recognition and some of the ritual work.  You can go to the library and internet to find them.  Of course, you have to seperate the wheat from the chaff.  I and every other brother that took his oaths seriously just won't tell you. However, the real secret of Freemasonry is what makes a brother drop what he is doing in order to help another brother that he may not even know.

Some of the brethren are happy to take their three degrees, pay their dues faithfully and never attend lodge.  Frankly, they are missing the best part of the fraternity.

I don't think any of them will drop out.  Even though the libs/dems are pushing the notion that the republican party has asked everyone but mittens to go for the good of the country and the party.  they are all staying.  funny someone brought up the idea that the folks who suspended their campaigns will suddenly be in play at the convention.

Can't wait for a brokered convention.  Even though someone tried to scare people last night by saying it was rove's way to put jeb bush in place.  Teh poster claimed annie and ace got on the romney band wagon cause they didn't want jeb.   But others think it's to put palin in place so that would seem to be more of a reason for annie and ace to get on the romney bandwagon.

I think the convention will be very interesting.

My wife and I were talking about this, and it's really not so bad.  Most of the really gory deaths can be "abstracted" where they show just enough to let you know what's going to happen, and the cut to Katnis's face and show her reaction, rather than actually showing the gore.

276 212. There is no parallel between the Masons and the Skull and Bones Harvard truly secret society of elitists. Any guy can be a Mason if he sets his mind to it. So far as European history is concerned, society was based upon membership in a Guild, including the Guild of Masons (stone mason, survey, architect). Particularly during the religious upheaval that Vic mentioned #1,  the Masons provided a fraternity allowing religious freedom where Catholics, Protestants and Jews could belong together and share in community service, cultivating peace and good will for all of European society to have common ground. The Masons publish the Bible. Mozart's Magic Flute Opera is based on Masonic lessons. I think the women's Masonic subsidiary is the Eastern Star. They traditionally present Rainbow debutant 16-year-old daughters at a cotillion ball, and offer college scholarships to graduating high school students. The Masons and Shriners provide hospitalization for children, schools for challenged children, a home for their elderly and cemeteries.

Alas, nowadays it means he'll get a brief stay in a custom built, muz-compliant prison, then be released into the wild or take his place among academia.

I got to run, but a couple quick thoughts.  If you "dropped out" you might owe about a year's back dues.  Check with the lodge that you had belonged to.  Pay your reinstatement fee and you should be all set.  Frankly, your old lodge will probably be happy to put you back on the roster -- all lodges are concerned about declining membeship.

My almost-15-year-old has had her ticket for Hunger Games for 3 weeks.  She has been talking nonstop about this movie for months, has spent hours on the Internet searching and watching every trailer and snip of bootleg footage, etc. etc.  She wasn't a big Twilight fan and was too young for the Harry Potter phenomenon.  This movie and set of books is her age group's big thing.  She's kind of a tough girl and loves the fighting and revolutionary aspect of the story, as opposed to Twilight which is just another romance story only with vampires.

I would not underestimate the impact of this group of books and movies on this age group's eventual political views.  My daughter despises Obama, and hates all forms of cult celebrity and political worship.  Hunger Games is a story of a revolution led by teens against a brutal totalitarian state.  It is more or less this generation's "Atlas Shrugged."

BTW, if anyone can stomach Matt Taibbi, his latest screed in Rolling Stone is about Bank of America and it is great, great, great.  This guy is a leftwing a-hole and pissed off everyone when he celebrated Breitbart's death, but he really understands the nefarious nature of our big banks and their unholy alliance with the government better than anyone who is writing today.  It's a shame he is such a dick, because he is so blinded by hate for the Right he can't see that we agree with him on the banks.

Here's a snip:

Anyone who wants to know what the Occupy Wall Street protests are all about need only look at the way Bank of America does business. It comes down to this: These guys are some of the very biggest assholes on Earth. They lie, cheat and steal as reflexively as addicts, they laugh at people who are suffering and don't have money, they pay themselves huge salaries with money stolen from old people and taxpayers – and on top of it all, they completely suck at banking. And yet the state won't let them go out of business, no matter how much they deserve it, and it won't slap them in jail, no matter what crimes they commit. That makes them not bankers or capitalists, but a class of person that was never supposed to exist in America: royalty.

Self-appointed royalty, it's true – but just as dumb and inbred as the real thing, and every bit as expensive to support. Like all royals, they reached their position in society by being relentlessly dedicated to the cause of Bigness, Unaccountability and the Worthlessness of Others. And just like royals, they spend most of their lives getting deeper in debt, and laughing every year when our taxes go to covering their whist markers. Two and a half centuries after we kicked out the British, it's really come to this?

327 JSBach, Well Tempered Clavier celebrated the novel compromised method of tuning; two complete sets of Preludes and  Fugues in every key, Major and minor. Bach dedicated his compositions to the glory of God. Of the three "great" late Baroque composers born in 1685, Bach died (1750) before the gluttonous harpsichordist D. Scarlatti (1757) and the German transposed to England GFHandel (1759) who longed to be known for his operas.

Though she earned more as a soprano than JSBach when they first met at work, his second wife Anna Magdalena (who mothered his first wife's as well as her own babies with Bach) died destitute, despite their sons' good incomes.

331 I loved The Hunger Games Trilogy.  I thought the third book was the best of the series.

The first book is all about the horrors a totalitarian society can inflict on its subjects.  The districts are all post-apocalyptic versions of US regions (the dictatorial district in charge is called The Capital, you can guess what that is supposed to reflect, and the district the heroine and hero are from is a poor mining district, probably meant to be Appalachia.)  The story is mostly about what happens one year at the games (a fight-to-the death contest among children from the various subject regions), but it also touches on how much the day-to-day lives suck under the totalitarian regime.

The second book is really just a retread of the first, but with a mixture of kids and adults.  It's entertaining because the new characters that are introduced are interesting, but it is the weakest of the three books, in my opinion.

The third book is the most interesting because it depicts what happens when the subjects rise up and revolt against the dictatorship.  What is great about it is that it doesn't treat the new government as some sort of knight on a white horse.  The new government is more like a communist government than a representative democracy, so it gradually begins to exhibit its own injustices that are as bad as The Capital's.

335 The Hunger Games series is very good...I'm wondering if the film will be gutsy enough to portray the violence, which is not gratuitous but a very important part of the story...my oldest bought tickets two weeks ago and can't wait for it. As for KISS, useless inofrmation, my mom for years went to the same beauty parlor as Gene Simmons mom...she and my mom used to show off their grandchildrens' pictures, and brag/complain/confide about their children...my mom always referred to her as, Kiss' Mother...not the mama, the last book was awesome (kind of slow to start, I keep encouraging my daughter to plow through)...I don't want to give anything away, but the end was very good, very well-done...I hope they can keep the scene with Snow at the end suspenseful, it could really be great in the movie...

345 RE: Hunger Games

My 11 year-old loved the books, but didn't think she wanted to see the movie (she thought the darkness in the books would be too much on the screen - what can I say? She's a pretty self-aware kid). Having read them (I try to read most things my daughter reads), I tend to agree.

I read in a Wall Street Journal article that they downplayed the romance angle in the film to make it more attractive to young males (who generally didn't like the Twilight p.o.s.).  So, I expect it'll be mostly an action flick.

I'd read the rest of the trilogy now rather than waiting, because it sounds like the movie(s) will be substantially different from the books.
