Yesterday there was some consternation over a citizen petition hosted on the White House website that seeks to have Rush Limbaugh dropped from Armed Forces Radio.

In response, Iowahawk created a petition there that needs your signature: Resign.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, March 6, 2012.  On this day in 1836 the Alamo fell to General Santa Anna of Mexico.  The battle cost him much time and many troops.  This ultimately contributed to his defeat and San Jacinto and the birth of Texas. The Alamo is maintained by the Daughters of The Republic of Texas.  There have been many efforts to strip that authority in recent years, but thanks to some good guys, control and maintenance remains out of government hands.  You will hear and read many revisionist stories about the Alamo.   Piss on them and the assholes telling those stories.

The Alamo as it existed in the early 1900s.

The Alamo as it exists today surrounded by San Antonio.

3 Shannon Bream is may look good but she is really dumb.  She thinks there is a good chance Scalia will vote with Obama on the Obamacare case.  She bases that on the medical marijuana case (Gonzales v. Raich) in which he referenced the "necessary and proper clause while the ruling itself delved all the way back to the depression area case that allowed commerce to include animal feed that never left the farm (Wickard v. Filburn 1942).  This is one of the worst legal rulings in the history of the Supreme Court and it is directly responsible for the explosion of the commerce clause.  This ruling came down only because FDR was successful in packing the court with commies in black robes.

But back to Bream's analysis.  She has missed the point. Gonzales v Raich didn't show Scalia as a swing justice.  It showed him as an "outcomist", just like the liberal wing, only on the conservative anti-drug side.  Before this case students of the court considered him a textualist.  He is not.  He lost some luster in my eyes on the day of that ruling.  It is not the job of the Supreme Court to assure that rulings are "good for the country" or fair.  It is the job of the court to assure that rulings are done in accordance with exactly how the Constitution is written, no more, no less.

So in the end, Obamacare will come down to Kennedy who is the "swing" justice now and whether he is mad at Scalia the day he makes up his mind on the ruling. (See Supreme Conflict by Jan Crawford Greenberg and she looks just as good as Shannon Bream)

4 I posted this yesterday in another thread in the afternoon and many of the Morons may have missed it.  Fed Judge rules MD gun control law unconstitutional. Rules that gun owners do not need to provide a "justification" for owning a gun.  (that law has to be really stupid)  Note that this is not an appellate judge, but it does fall within his authority because it uses prior Supreme Court rulings and does not generate new rulings.

5 Sales of storm shelters on the rise.  If I lived in tornado alley you can bet that I would have a tornado shelter either close by the house or in a basement in the house.  I have even thought about building one here even though we do not see that many tornados.  During Hugo I did have one come through my neighborhood.

7 Corrupt AG Holder laid out his legal "justification" for executing citizens overseas. Here is the key paragraph in this story:

Quote

Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday said the Obama administration has the "clear authority" to kill U.S. citizens overseas who are believed to be a terrorist threat.

"Given the nature of how terrorists act and where they tend to hide, it may not always be feasible to capture a United States citizen terrorist who presents an imminent threat of violent attack," Holder said. "In that case, our government has the clear authority to defend the United States with lethal force."

End quote

I have no problem with the second paragraph, with the exception of "imminent" which is too vague. The problem lies in the first paragraph with this part "who are believed to be a terrorist threat".  That is NOT application of due process and it is a hole big enough to drive a Mack truck through. Who determines "believed"?  There needs to be a lot more that "belief" when deciding to kill a citizen. And it needs to be independently reviewed from outside the executive department. "Imminent threat" is not enough to execute someone. This should be changed to "imminent attack" and it too needs to be independently reviewed.

If GWB had come up with this the liberals would have been screaming from the roof tops.  Hell look how much they bitched about reviewing library checkout records which they could already do.  Here we are talking about killing someone without a trial and the press is virtually ignoring it.

Talk about double standards eh?

Former Governor Angus King to run for the Snowe seat?  But here are a couple of telling quotes:

Quote:

A popular two-term governor and professor at Bowdoin College, King has a history of working with both parties and a demonstrated appeal to the state's large swath of independent voters

Interpretation

He is a liberal

Quote:

Snowe, a popular centrist Republican, had been positioned to easily win another term in November, but announced last week she would not run again......

Interpretation

Hahahahhaha, "centrist Republican" in MFM speak means one who votes with Democrats more than Republicans, as Snowe does. It would be nice if we had A Democrat who voted with Republicans more than Dems to see what they would call them.  But they do call some of them "moderates" and "Blue Dogs".  Those are ones who occasionally vote for a bill that opposes tax increases or excessive spending when their vote doesn't matter.

Quote:

If King wins, he will face the choice of which party's caucus to join. He could choose to caucus with whichever party is more closely aligned with his agenda, and Republicans speculated he would probably caucus with Democrats. Two independents - Sens. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) and Bernie Sanders (Vt.) - currently caucus with the Democrats.

Interpretation

Bernie Sanders is not an independent.  He is an avowed Communist.  Why does the MFM continue to ignore this?

12 Democrats see no business that can not be excessively regulated. Democrat Rep Robert Williams want ALL South Carolina businesses to be forced to open theirt private restrooms to customers.   Now that "sounds" pretty benign right, and who opposes letting people go to the restrooms?  Well, the problem is first it will make restroom cleanup a huge expense, and second it opens the store to a massive increase in regulation/inspections by DEHEC and the Dept of Health. In  short, huge increase in expenses.  Of course Dems never heard of the law of unintended consequences.

How was Ari Fleischer a horrible Press Sec? I was very impressed with him. He was completely unflappable and cool under fire. Under hostile hectoring from the doucheiest collection of fucknozzles on the planet he had perfect recall of Bush's policy positions and speeches, quoting them verbatim weeks or months later to parry mischaracterizations or outright misquotes.

He was the best Press Sec Bush had.  Including Tony Snow. He owned those conferences.

92 Velvet Ambition, referencing "Texians" and The Alamo, from wikipedia:

Santa Anna reportedly told Captain Fernando Urizza that the battle "was but a small affair". Another officer then remarked that "with another such victory as this, we'll go to the devil". In his initial report Santa Anna claimed that 600 Texians had been killed, with only 70 Mexican soldiers killed and 300 wounded. His secretary, Ramón Martínez Caro, later repudiated the report. Other estimates of the number of Mexican soldiers killed ranged from 60–2,000, with an additional 250–300 wounded. Most Alamo historians place the number of Mexican casualties at 400–600 Mexicans. This would represent about one-third of the Mexican soldiers involved in the final assault, which Todish remarks is "a tremendous casualty rate by any standards". Most eyewitnesses counted between 182–257 Texians killed. Some historians believe that at least one Texian, Henry Warnell, successfully escaped from the battle. Warnell died several months later of wounds incurred either during the final battle or during his escape as a courier.

Mexican soldiers were buried in the local cemetery, Campo Santo. Shortly after the battle, Colonel José Juan Sanchez Navarro proposed that a monument should be erected to the fallen Mexican soldiers. Cos rejected the idea.

The Texian bodies were stacked and burned. The only exception was the body of Gregorio Esparza. His brother Francisco, an officer in Santa Anna's army, received permission to give Gregorio a proper burial. The ashes were left where they fell until February 1837, when Juan Seguín returned to Béxar to examine the remains. A simple coffin inscribed with the names Travis, Crockett, and Bowie was filled with ashes from the funeral pyres.

We're supposed to pretend we're Democrats who want low taxes, apparently. If we're not supposed to talk about abortion during a GOP primary, what the fuck makes you think anything is going to be done about it ever? And if you don't care, stop hiding behind the excuse that it's an electoral loser. Admit you align more closely with Democrats on that issue. 152 I'm hopeful for Romney, but this could break so many different ways. If he wins six (the minimum for him to not go into panic mode), and one of them is not Ohio, then nothing changes much and the fight rages on. If he wins 6 or more including OH, Romney becomes a prohibitive favorite from here until May. As for what Gingrich does with his GA win, I have no idea. He could very well take it as an opportunity to leave on a high note, thus releasing his supporters, which would require a reshuffle between Santorum and Mitt. It's been a hard fight every step of the way but I think he'll pull it off.

I've     just         never     been a fan of telling folks     who to vote for in the primaries,     or mocking their choices after the fact.         It just rubs me the wrong way.      Persuasion, sure, but if they aren't persuaded, I respect that.     Now     as       for       the general     election,       you bet      I'll     be out there whacking      ambivalent GOP voters over the head with a clown hammer to get them to the voting booths to vote for our candidate,    whoever that may be.

Like how to create fake accounts and work through proxies for stuff like signing online petitions. The Democrats and MFM can't let it be about the economy because in spite of all of their spin people know it's bad. So they have to create BS like this to make an "election issue". The Republicans need to brush off these things and continue to hammer away about the economy

159 Santorum could be the ideal candidate to highlight the Dem/MFM attempt to distract a large portion of the women's vote with this manufactured sexual health issue.

He could say that his PERSONAL views on these subjects are well documented but the election is about the size of government, especially its expansion with Obamacare, and how the economy is being strangled because of it.

He understands the necessity to allow women the freedom to make their own decisions based on their  beliefs within current law, and that they should be insulted with these phony attempts to co-opt their votes through fear.

The fact that Santorum doesn't seize this opportunity should be self defeating.

Link on Drudge:

Sandra Fluke is being sold by the left as something she's not. Namely a random co-ed from Georgetown law who found herself mixed up in the latest front of the culture war who was simply looking to make sure needy women had access to birth control. That, of course, is not the case.

As many have already uncovered Sandra Fluke she is, in reality, a 30 long time liberal activist who enrolled at Georgetown with the express purpose of fighting for the school to pay for students' birth control. She has been pushing for mandated coverage of contraceptives at Georgetown for at least three years according to the Washington Post.

However, as I discovered today, birth control is not all that Ms. Fluke believes private health insurance must cover. She also, apparently, believes that it is discrimination deserving of legal action if "gender reassignment" surgeries are not covered by employer provided health insurance. She makes these views clear in an article she co-edited with Karen Hu in the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law.

 She's a radical feminist lesbo.

There's the whole part where businesses, especially smaller ones, aren't hiring because they don't know what kind of fines/fees/taxes they're going to get hit with because of Obamacare, which also requires them to pay higher insurance premiums so their employees' adult daughters can get free birth control and abortifacients.  But yeah, that's not helpful, because "moderates" would rather enable their neighbors' daughters' bad life choices than have a job.

I toured the Alamo a couple of years ago when I was in San Antonio for my oldest son's graduation from Air Force basic training. Its a very humbling site, and the folks in charge treat it very reverently; they do not allow pictures to be taken inside the actual Alamo building (which was a church originally, I believe). The sad part is that most of the actual area of the battle itself is now covered with buildings. There is a federal building where the wall was (if I remember correctly) and the place where the Texians were all burned is now a bridge over the River Walk.

186 What interesting to me is that the guy that was seen as fairly conservative (at least in comparison to McCain) in 2008 is now apparently seen as the anti-Christ and I just don't understand that logic. --- Romney has certainly been demonized a great deal, but frankly so have the other three (only Paul deserves it). I think the key thing is that it's clear that *since* 2008 Romney was still pimping Masscare as a model for the federal government to follow. So that's the big policy flaw he has that was not apparent last time. When other groups or individuals realized the problems with Masscare or the mandate, they dropped it. Hell, even if they dropped it because they saw that Tea Partiers opposed it, that's good enough for some of us as it shows being tuned into the political reality. Romney, for whatever reason, appears to have doubled down, refusing to acknowledge that Masscare has made health care delivery and access worse in MA. Moreover, he did nothing to try to persuade neighboring states or the fed government to abandon the idea. That's pretty bad in my book. The second thing, which is less important on one hand but that I think is fueling some of the white hot "hate" of Romney is how he has conducted his campaign. I admit that last time I really thought it was all Huckabee. I don't believe that now after seeing what Romney did this time around and also after hearing from Fred Thompson about 2008. The third thing is the sheer number of flip-flops and outright lies Romney has amassed over an incredibly short time in office. When his own guy is saying 'yeah, Mitt was lying about his abortion stance when he was in Massachusetts,' that's pretty bald faced. People don't trust him. So I understand why some people think they will not be able to vote for the guy under any circumstances. I am trying to keep myself out of that frame of mind - and trying to persuade my husband that he must vote for Romney in the general should that be the option - but I do understand where the folks who really reject Romney are coming from.

I've had this conversation before, and the thought is that it should be rare for the same reason tooth extraction should be rare---not because the tooth/fetus has a right to stay put, but because if either of those procedures are common, it means people aren't taking care of themselves. If you look at it that way (and pretend that the baby doesn't have rights) it makes sense; surgeries that "fix" entirely avoidable conditions should be rare. I don't agree, because I think a fetus has rights and tooth doesn't, but as far as debate goes it does work.

It goes further than just that Romney failed to even attempt to dissuade other states or the federal government on going the route that MA did as regards Romneycare.  He actively "encouraged" the mandate at the federal level.

203 200 So, Mitt in 2009 said Obama should use Massachusetts as a model. So did Newt. And btw: as much as I dislike the individual mandate, Romney's point was that in Massachusetts the law requires all deadbeats to get exactly the same coverage as everyone else - something I don't agree with - so the only way to make sure such deadbeats paid their fair share was to require them, under those circumstances, to carry health insurance. And things Romneycare NEVER did was: create death panels to deny granny her knee replacement, slash Medicare by $500 billion to pay for illegal healthcare, and the sort of intrusive control that will severely cut the number of doctors. In short: there are ALL sorts of differences between what Romney did in Mass. and Obamacare.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A senior administration official says President Barack Obama will announce housing initiatives to help members of the military as well as homeowners with mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration.

Obama will spell out the housing efforts during a news conference Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the programs before the president unveiled them.

FHA-insured borrowers would be able to refinance their loans at half the fee that the FHA currently charges. That could save a typical FHA borrower more than $1,000 annually. Two million to 3 million borrowers would be eligible, the administration says.

For service members, Obama will announce that major lenders will review foreclosures on members of the military. If wrongly foreclosed upon, service members will be paid their lost equity and receive additional compensation

?
Half of RomneyCareÂ’s new spending was financed by the federal government through the Medicaid program, which is financed through federal taxes, which fall on taxpayers in all 50 states.  That means that when Romney financed half of RomneyCareÂ’s new spending by pulling down more federal Medicaid dollars, he increased taxes on residents of all 50 states.

Posted by: McLovin at March 06, 2012 09:38 AM (j0IcY) I'm not defending Romneycare as a stunning success. But living in CT - on the verge of its own Romneycare plan, called "Sustinet" here - I understand that in a heavily, heavily blue state at least Romneycare prevented the outright socialization ("single payer") of healthcare in Massachusetts. See, sometimes politicians have to play the hand their dealt, even if they don't like it. Vic has pointed out that even Reagan himself governed fairly left of center in California, because if he wanted to have ANY influence on policy there, he had to stay in office.

I understand that in a heavily, heavily blue state at least Romneycare prevented the outright socialization ("single payer") of healthcare in Massachusetts.

I think this is the intellectual divide on this topic.  There are those who argue the pragmatic response and those on the other side who arge the philosophical response that Masscare or any other similar type program is simply a step towards full single payer.  I am not saying that either side is totally correct as those of the philosophical bent do need to recognize the pragmatic difficulties and the pragmatists need to contemplate where the pragmatic position will uttely lead from a theoretical viewpoint.  But there is a distinct division there.  That's why there are those of us, including myself, who simply do not believe that Romney will be on the front lines of attempting to repeal Obamacare.  He may say that he supports such an appeal but his prior actions and his continued defense of Masscare are emblematic that he believes that such a program, in some form, is appropriate.

I suppose that has been the case for many during the primaries. However, assuming Romney is the Rominee, it seems to me that for opponents of Obamacare Romney will be the only deal in town. Staying home will be as good as a vote for Obama. And there is far, FAR more at stake come November than Obamacare. The SCOTUS for starters, and all sorts of international treaties Obama is looking to pass, things like subjecting the United States of America to the European judicial system ("The Hague") for the first time since 1776. 251 You just THINK about all that. Posted by: CoolCzech at March 06, 2012 09:48 AM ---- The problem is, CoolCzech, that a lot of us do not trust Romney on a really fundamental level. So even things like judicial appointments, in which once again he does not have a good record (and must rely on the "it was Massachusetts!" excuse), are a matter of trust in someone's judgment. Now I happen to believe Romney will be a pretty typical establishment politician who doles out positions for political payback and whatnot... but at least the folks he will be paying back are not likely to be communist-sympathizers who hate America. However, the idea that is implied in your last statement - that people who oppose Romney are not thinking - is somewhat insulting. They *are* thinking. They are looking at Romney's rather thin record and seeing a guy whom they cannot trust to advance conservative principles. The factor that needs to be added is which of the two guys - Obama or Romney - hates America. I think when you put that in, you have to pull the lever for Romney (in the general). But I think the Romney supporters who are stomping their feet and insisting people in the remaining forty or so states get in line and vote Romney in the primary are not helping their candidate. Conservatives need to feel that they have been heard. That's what the primary and convention are for.

Yes, you have to confirm your email address via a link.   I have a SPAM account that I usually use for these kinds of things.  The only info the White House site itself asks for is your first and last name and your email address.  You have the option of including your ZIP code, but it's not required.  If your email account is sufficiently "clean" of most of your identifying information, then I think you should go for it.  Hotmail and Yahoo are good choices.   And if you worry about your IP address  -- understandable!  -- try using a public computer at a library, or somewhere similar.

287 Romney gets a mulligan for the abortion flip-flop for a very simple reason.

A lot of us were liberals in our youth and over the years have grown out of it.  Ask David Mamet.

Btw, the economic reason for discussing abortion is simple.  "The Population Bomb" is bullshit.  If 50 million American babies had not been murdered in the last 40 years, we would NOT be suffering from the demographic "recession" that Europe is currently "enjoying."  Social Security would not be bankrupt.

291 Obama didn't just approve of partial birth abortion, he also approved of allowing living born children to die in a soild utility room because treating them would "interfere with the mother's decision to abort" The man and his fat ass wife (who wrote sn impassioned defense of stabbing babies in the neck and sucking out their brains) are pure evil. The problem is that people refuse to look at things that are so awful. Our president supports killing full term babies? That sounds icky, better ignore it and focus on some Obama money!

298 "The economy is tied directly to our national security and vice versa."
--

The only platform addressing that symbiosis is Ron Paul's. Secure the US Dollar without which America is no longer independent, and contain government agencies and policies within constitutional bounds, including the military defense of the American Constitutional Republic.

Keynesians including Romney will pursue the economic status quo spending rut course. With "Repo Men" Romney the authoritarian will NOT consider the value of citizens' rights, nor will Mitt in the Oval Office tolerate being challenged ideologically. The America Romney loves is himself and what's in it for him and his, VERY distinct from "others".  Just go along to get along and keep on whining that nothing improves while paddling your barrel along the current over the falls.

Readers claim to admire BIG Breitbart's balls? Only because you agreed with his views. In that, at least demand his promised March 1st promised BOlinksy show immediately released for scrutiny. And don't hold your breath waiting for Mitt Romney to touch Breitbart's ghost, having had nothing to do with him in life. Sure, condolences were properly expressed at Breitbart's passing except by Barack Obama.

WhatÂ’s Andrew Breitbart Going to Hit Mitt Romney With?
Posted on January 9, 2012 by Kevin DuJan // 2012 GOP Candidates
hillbuzz.org:

“The Party of Stupid” never learns.
You are beyond any help if you think that Democrats need anyone to give them ideas. The Left has been eagerly and aggressively rooting for Romney to be the 2012 nominee because their opposition research file on him goes all the way back to 1994. It is not appropriate or acceptable to take any vetting of Romney off the table because you think “thatÂ’s mean” or insist “youÂ’re giving Democrats material!”.  Sister mister, the Democrats have more material on Romney than you or I or even Andrew Breitbart could dream.  Romney is the wrong candidate for 2012 when jobs are one of the two big issues (the other being Obamacare, which RomneyÂ’s also terrible regarding). --

"Is Mitt Romney a Keynesian?"
By Daniel J. Mitchell, February 23, 2012
International Liberty:

What is it about Mitt Romney? The United States desperately needs smaller government, lower taxes, and less intervention, yet his comments and track record on issues such as the value-added tax, healthcare, Social Security reform, budget savings, ethanol subsidies, and the minimum wage leave a lot to be desired.

We can now add something else to the list. The former Massachusetts governor has come out of the closet as a Keynesian. "Romney admits Budget Cuts Slow the Economy." [youtube]

"America's longest war will leave no trace"

Mark Steyn, March 2, 2012
ocregister.com

In the past couple of months, two prominent politicians of different nations visiting their troops on the ground have used the same image to me for Western military bases: crusader forts. ... Safely back within the gates, a man can climb out of the full RoboCop and stop pretending he enjoys three cups of tea with the duplicitous warlords, drug barons and pederasts who pass for Afghanistan's ruling class.

The last crusader fort I visited was Kerak Castle in Jordan a few years ago. It was built in the 1140s, and still impresses today. I doubt there will be any remains of our latter-day fortresses a millennium hence. Six weeks after the last NATO soldier leaves Afghanistan, it will be as if we were never there. Before the election in 2010, the New York Post carried a picture of women registering to vote in Herat, all in identical top-to-toe bright blue burkas, just as they would have looked on Sept. 10, 2001. We came, we saw, we left no trace. America's longest war will leave nothing behind.

They can breach our security, but we cannot breach theirs – the vast impregnable psychological fortress in which what passes for the Pushtun mind resides. Someone accidentally burned a Quran your pals had already defaced with covert messages? Die, die, foreigners! The president of the United States issues a groveling and characteristically clueless apology for it? Die, die, foreigners! The American friend who has trained you and hired you and paid you has arrived for a meeting? Die, die, foreigners! And those are the Afghans who know us best. To the upcountry village headmen, the fellows descending from the skies in full body armor are as alien as were the space invaders to Americans in the film "Independence Day."

The Rumsfeld strategy that toppled the Taliban over a decade ago was brilliant and innovative: special forces on horseback using GPS to call in unmanned drones. They will analyze it in staff colleges around the world for decades. But what we ought to be analyzing instead is the sad, aimless, bloated, arthritic, transnationalized folly of what followed. The United States is an historical anomaly: ... and in some ways that speaks well for it, and in other ways, in a hostile and fast-changing world of predators and opportunists, it does not.

"Our nations (sic) wealth"???  You're joking, right?  What wealth?  Have you looked at the US balance sheet lately?  How does forcing unwanted children to be born into a life of welfare increase our nation's wealth?

And I CAN justify abortion because your position is, like mine, only an opinion.  You believe personhood begins at conception.  I believe it begins when a fetus is viable.  These days that's somewhere around twenty-four or twenty-five weeks, given excellent care.  Even more important, I believe what a woman does in consultation with her physician is none of your business.  You are no more right than I am and I resent the hell out of being labeled "stupid" and "psychotic" for a reasoned opinion.

Wandering only slightly afield here, it never ceases to amaze me that the same people who would outlaw abortion are the ones screaming to the skies about the skyrocketing cost of welfare. Does the correlation not occur to them?

Let's see, we've made abortion a sacred right of women (1973, Roe vs. Wade) , and we have skyrocketing costs of welfare (1930s New Deal, 1960s Great Society).   The correlation you want us to notice is that devaluing human lives leads to ... more welfare?

Or do you want us to play with a hypothetical scenario where if we currently had a more traditional society that despised abortion, shamed young singles from premarital sex, and pushed shotgun weddings, that we'd be even deeper in the hole in welfare?   (does not follow; that's a society that encourages individual responsibility)

Posted by: ConservativeMonster at March 06, 2012 08:54 AM (sGtp+)

348 Man, I feel like I'm dealing with a grade-schooler here.

The skyrocketing costs of welfare are, of course, not the result of Roe v. Wade but of a society which increasingly accepts children born out of wedlock.  Think for a moment of how many more families we would have on welfare absent Roe.

Screw it.  You guys are a bunch of pussies who won't even sign a petition to remove a guy you all acknowledge to be the worst president in history but would bully any woman with an unwanted pregnancy.  Classy.

Posted by: creeper at March 06, 2012 09:03 AM (gre5a)

I believe personhood begins at 18, when the teenager's addled mind finally begins to gain some semblance of intelligence.

Your opinion is as good as mine, no more right or wrong.    What a family chooses to do with a teenager that they've fed and raised for 18 years, in the privacy of their own home, is none of your business.  After all, it doesn't affect you.

And I'll make sure to keep my damn opinions to myself when a serial killer decides that you're not a person and to pay you a visit.   It's all just our opinions, and they're all equally valid and nice and good.

351 365 Man, I feel like I'm dealing with a grade-schooler here.

Classy.

Simple economics question:   What happens when you increase the gas efficiency of cars?    Do we use more or less gas?

Correct answer:  We use more gas, because higher efficiency makes it cheaper to drive, so people DRIVE MORE, to the point it exceeds the higher gas efficiency.     Why does that happen?   Societies aren't static, and people respond to incentives.   Changing one variable can cause MULTIPLE effects.   This is why we call it the "Law of UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES".

So you're performing a simple analysis of what happens if we changed our society's underlying principles on abortion and only looking at one effect - more people.   There may be more people - but without easy abortions, we'd have less casual sex, more long term relationships and marriages (since men want to get some of that sweet sweet booty), and a less dysfunctional society.

If I'm a grade-schooler, what does that make your one-bit understanding of this issue?

352 365 Man, I feel like I'm dealing with a grade-schooler here.

I really want to drive home how incoherent your point is:

The correlation we can observe is this:    70 odd years ago, greatly restricted abortion, no welfare state.     Now, mostly unrestricted abortion, bankrupt welfare state.

What you want us to do is to make an extrapolation - without abortion, we'd have more poor people (cause only poor people get abortions, apparently), and we'll assume that those poor people would all be on welfare, and thus our welfare state would be deeper in the hole.      Basically, your thesis is that we've only aborted unproductive people, so our society is better off with all of them dead.

If you could do better than grade school level analysis, you might see a flaw with that train of thought.

353 Hey, ConservativeMonster...did you sign the petition?

Ole Texas Chic, thanks for adding "baby-killer" to "psychotic" and "stupid".  I'm accumulating quite a stack of pejoratives today.  Happily, watching Sarah Palin deal with crap like this has taught me how to cope with name-callers.

Wish StuckOnStupid would get home so we could talk about something a little more au courant than a forty-year-old SCOTUS ruling which is supported in principle by more than sixty percent of the population.

Link?  Why, yes.  I have a link:

354 Started my taxes during lunch.  Anyone else discover the new form 8949 and the indescribable joy of getting to file three of them?

Where is trashcan man when you need him?

356 I hear you, Merovign (and respect you highly).  Understand completely the point you are making.

When winning friends and influencing people is obviously not in the cards, though, you may as well say what's on your mind.

Got that from some guy who died last week.

Your same source notes that 60% would support restricting abortion to a greater degree.

37% support tighter restrictions than now, 23% say it should be banned.

So yes, abortion isn't likely to be banned from our current society any time soon because people want to "care" for that girl who needs it for incest or rape or some horrid horrid (and unlikely) circumstance completely out of her control.   At the same time, people can see that unrestricted abortion is pretty horrible as well.

People don't like either "extreme" - but we as a society still make a choice about what we're going to accept.   Where we land between the two extremes does matter, and it's worth fighting for.    The leftists are always fighting for their vision of society - we can adopt the leftist view, or we can push our alternative.

359 In the Ohio primaries today, I voted for the first time in 5 years, and I didn't even have to hold my nose when I did it. In the primary here, a certain favorite of the moron horde is still on the ballot. It may be a worthless protest vote, but it felt good. I voted for the man who best represented what I want in the POTUS. I voted for Rick F'ing Perry, and have no regrets.
