6 Wind Farms paid to not produce and shut down because with snow melt runoff there is more than enough hydro power.  What they are telling you here is how expensive wind power is, especially compared to hydro which is the absolute cheapest and the fact that you can not have wind or solar as too high a percentage of your generation mix due to its instability. But all the green turds in this area will see their electricity bills increase. Waaaa.  They have the cheapest rates in the country due to hydro so tough.

10 SC GOP finally wising up and going to the Legislature to close GOP primaries.  They have sued every election for the past 10 years or so and lost.  The court has ruled repeatedly that if they use any SC resources then the State can have a say in the primary.  And when the legislature was totally in the hands of the Democrats they made it an open primary.  It is about time they wised up.

I agree with you that Knut is the best of this bad bunch, but he's toast and should bow out. I don't happen to believe it will lead to a coalescing of the !Romney vote around Santorum though, nor do I think if Santorum were to leave Newt would gain all of that vote. I think the !Romney's are split between the two as each have huge, but different fatal flaws. Gingrich brings the baggage and is erratic at best, Santorum is a big government SoCon.

I'd say Newt leaving nets Santorum at best half his support, the rest to Romney with a small slice for uncle crazypants. I'm still not sure who I'll vote for when NY primaries roll around. I'm torn between Newt (if he's still in), Perry (if he's still on the ballot), Herr Doktor (if it's between Romney and Santorum), and SMOD (if just decide to say fuck it).

29 I liked the analysis posted on the sidebar yesterday. There really is no practical path to the nomination for Santorum, and Newt is mathematically eliminated. The only rational for them staying in is to deny Mitt a first ballot win. And Vic, I really don't agree with your southern support analysis. Mitt has been a pretty strong second choice in the southern states. South Carolina and Georgia are voting Obama over Mitt? That's crazy talk.

38 South Carolina and Georgia are voting Obama over Mitt? That's crazy talk.
---------------------------

SC and GA are not the issue, there is enough margin there. Its States like NC and VA which have razor thin margins due to an influx of liberals into the State. A few percentage points of disgusted conservatives staying at home would be all it would take to turn the State over to Obama again.

In short, its 2008 all over again.  But what is worse is the potential harm that that would do to the Senate and House. So far turnout has been miserable and that does not bode well.

And no, they are not going to vote for Obama.  They will simply sit at home and F%#* it.

46 #19  Vic,  I realize you are concerned about the Second Amendment,  but it is foolish to think that some of these anti-Romney people are not being bigoted.  And this is not confined to the South.   I don't understand it,  since as far as I can tell the Mormons simply have a lot of kids, don't drink,  and have a slightly bizarre theology.  They don't bother anyone except for knocking on doors once in a while.

However,  I do think that there is an undercurrent of this which pops up on Free Republic and some other web sites (including here every once in a while from trolls).  The Obama people are stirring it, and so is the media with their whisper campaign.  It needs to be faced head-on.

I am a Catholic,  and many of the practices of my Church are viewed with suspicion by people from outside.  A generation ago this type of prejudice was directed against John F. Kennedy.  I despise Santorum for using this prejudice (which he is doing) and I absolutely will speak out whenever I see it.

Meanwhile,  we have an anti-Christian,  anti-Semitic, pro-Muslim communist in the White House.

51 The difference between you and me is that I don't think it's automatically an indication of prejudice when people have questions about the religious beliefs of others. A generation ago, when Kennedy was running for President, people didn't know, would a Catholic President be required to obey the dictates of the Pope when it came to matters of state? It was a question that needed answering. Granted, there are bigots everywhere, in every generation, but I think Catholics at the time wanted people to know what they believed. It was a legitimate point of discussion. Are Romney's religious beliefs a valid point of discussion? Can we have that discussion without automatically assuming people who ask questions are bigots?

Yeah I don't know why the fan base wouldn't support cutting him. Their entire team is built around him to the point you go from playoff team to worst in the league if he gets injured. Not a winning recipe to have your entire team built aroun one guy like that. This is the NFL not the NBA. Now you draft supposedly the best QB in the draft since Peyton, lucky fucks

Posted by: Mr Pink at March 08, 2012 03:26 AM (iv+KC)

55 #51  If you think the questions about Kennedy were beased on soloely on legitimate questions about his religion,  you didn't live through that election in the Midwest (which I did).  My folks got letters accusing him of wanting to give government money to catholic schools, put a chapel in the White House, and have a hot line to the Pope.  And this was AFTER his speech.

Sure,  a lot of people have questions borne of curiosity.  And when some of the unusual practices are explained,  we see crap like "sacred underwear."  I am disgusted with it.  And a LOT of the questions are similar to the fake curiosity that Huckabee used on the radio in Oklahoma in 2008 and tried to deny he ever said later,  such as "Say,  isn't that the religion which believes Jesus and Satan were brothers?"

Posted by: Miss Marple at March 08, 2012 03:28 AM (GoIUi)

56 The notion that Southern conservatives will stay home in large numbers and thereby reelect Obama is absurd.  They'll vote not because they like Romney but because the alternative is so bad.

The relatively high votes for Santorum right now are a protest vote, not an expression of confidence in him.  Think about it.  If Romney weren't the frontrunner, Santorum would be done.  Very few, certainly not the 30% or so supporting Santorum now, were supporting him 6 months ago when he p0olled low single digits.   What does that tell you?

Protest votes are fine for primaries, although this season is going on way too long.  They'll go away in the general.

From that article: "Defenbaugh says the ruling takes into account exigent or time-sensitive circumstances that could be life saving in more urgent cases, such as child abduction. ”If the child is alive and you’re only minutes behind, that could be critical to recovering that child alive,” added Defenbaugh."

As I'm sure you know, a lot of people think of the Lutheran Church as Catholic Lite. Is that bigoted? Misinformed? Overly simplistic/inaccurate? It is possible to be wrong, and even be somewhat insultingly so, but that doesn't mean bad intentions on the part of the person ignorant to the truth. Even your question above, do Muslims pray for violent... I'm sure you are aware there are millions and millions of Muslims around the world who do not subscribe to a violent interpretation of "jihad." And if you are not aware of that, it doesn't make you bigoted. Just uninformed, perhaps. As with so many other things in this world, it's not what you know/don't know, it's what you do with that knowledge or lack thereof.

79 I'm still annoyed about Panetta's statement yesterday. International approval is needed for military action, but not Congressional. The Constitution really is just a joke to them, isn't it?
---

"THEM"?

"Promise them anything; just get their votes!" Even if you forced Romney to commit to the Constitution, he's not going to defer to constitutional constraints once gaining the Oval Office.

Romney launched his '12 campaign promising to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. That rhetoric disappeared in the wind when he decided to "prove" neoconservative bona fide credentials for Republican acceptability. Now Mitt touts war, war, more war, the virtues of war, having studied NONE of the detailed circumstances himself, promising to attack (Syria) Iran because he'd rather fear monger than prove inept at international diplomacy. As ever, Mitt will do as he's told by those who pull the strings -- anything to gain acceptability from GHWB's exclusionary circle.

You will not get different results from Romney than the unconstitutional "New World Order (GHWB)" policies established and endorsed by the Bush presidents, and augmented by Obama. Given this year's record, forget about Congress; it's already forfeited its own constitutional identity via "Super Congress." Must you wait to see where that leads? Who is surprised whenever DHS usurps more authority? Whatever "loyal opposition" Members of Congress who exist are already surrounded, under fire for not caving. Count many months/years before the public acknowledges that DHS "is" the US Government.

Mitt Romney's entire life is structured on the pyramid power paradigm of elitist "meritocracy" monopolization.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, a government report showed on Thursday, but not enough to change perceptions that the labor market was strengthening.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 362,000, the Labor Department said. The prior week's figure was revised up to 354,000 from the previously reported 351,000. Even with the increases, claims are still near their lowest in four years.

Despite the rise in claims last week, labor market conditions are improving and the government is expected to report on Friday that the economy had a third straight month of solid job gains in February.

Linking Mormon and Muslim faiths? A theology scholar in Jerusalem made the comparisons on "Heart of the Matter" at least a year ago. Ironic how comparisons play out since Mormons consider themselves adopted Israelites -- perhaps illustrating what all share in common. Such consternation. It could be argued on a different count the affinity which Mormonism would have with Gnosticism, though Mormons produce their own American "scripture" sprung from Joseph Smith Jr.'s affinity with the occult, rather than base faith/knowledge on either ancient Gnostic Christian traditions for experiential awareness or more specifically from the Gospel according to St. Thomas.

OTOH, the Missouri Synod hates single women. God created women to marry and spawn, and so by not, I'm flipping him the bird or something.  (If God wanted me to be married, he shouldn't have created me so fluking ugly.)

160 Vic @53

I assure you the "anti-Mormon thing" is not a figment of anyone's imagination here in the heartland where they were driven out twice...first from Missouri and subsequently from Illinois.

The history of Mormonism in the Midwest is not a happy one.  We look back today and wonder what could possibly have caused the local populace to rise up and eject an entire group from their midst.  When we search for the answers we find very little on the internet or in print.  What objective coverage hasn't been scrubbed has been overwhelmed by Mormons' iron-willed attempt to remake their image.

Those of us who live here and study the area know the history.  We know the truth...that Mormons were driven out because they overwhelmed the local population culturally, spiritually, economically and often physically.  They expected land to be given to them and laws to exclude them.  They isolated themselves from social interaction with their neighbors except for relentless proselytizing and wanted newspapers censored on their behalf.

Mormons had a single-mindedness of purpose that would be the envy of any political system and you see that today in Mitt Romney's campaign.  Today they are still relentless in pursuit of their goals, which has allowed them to reclaim Nauvoo, Illinois...the city they were expelled from in the winter of 1838/39.  Their dogged determination to win the White House found two of them running for President this year for a time...in a country where they comprise 1.7% of the population.  Above all, their goal is to prevail.

Please understand this is not a condemnation of Mormons themselves.  But you need to know the history and goals of the church in order to evaluate Mitt Romney as a candidate.

Go here to do that:  http://www.lds-mormon.com/

OK.  Now flame away.

164 So Instapundit wonders: >>The political reaction to “slut” was opportunistic, of course, but it worked with a lot of women because — apparently, even in this age of sexual liberation and “slut pride” — women are still somehow deeply affected by charges of wanton and undiscriminating sexual behavior. This might even account for the importance of the contraceptive issue, because mandated contraceptive coverage may be seen as representing not just a modest monetary benefit, but also perhaps some sort of societal validation. I would have thought that a strong independent woman wouldn’t need a stamp of societal approval for her choices, but apparently I would have been wrong. I leave it to the evolutionary-psych folks to work out why the “slut” charge retains such power in liberated times. end quote. I'm thinking women don't want another woman in their group/tribe if they think that woman will steal their men.

THIS.  I'm so sick of the assumption being bigotry everytime someone disagrees with Mitt on policy.  There's stuff to not like about Mitt.  There's stuff to not like about all of the candidates.  It does the MFM's job for them when conservatives try to focus on just one factor as the reason for lack of support.  It's not significantly different from the race-card, because it allows a candidate to not listen to legitimate concerns, and it's getting old just as fast.

I think there is a HUGE anti-mormon bias at work here. People don't like people they find different because they are threatened. The people in the heartland and in the deep south are probably going to have a bigger mormon bias than the coasts---wait for it----NOT because the coasties are somehow more tolerant but here on the coast the Mormon isn't nearly as strange as Akbar and his 20 burkaed wives, Alejandro and his pupusa cart, Vietnamese diet choices, the Nigerian nannies, and the libtard hippies. Walk a day in the Eden center in Arlington and then tell me Mormonism has either a strange history or practices. It looks like apple pie comparitively.

205 Lars Grotenballen, you posted Mormon with Muslim in your own comment, to which I responded most certainly not as Pagels.

"Islam is the only religion that blows stuff up in an organized fashion."

Both the Republican and Democrat Parties' LEADERSHIP endorse Statism wherein the State IS the Religion/god.

"Lifetime?" Were you born yesterday, not to recall the Irish Catholic/Protestant war? How convenient that you limit what a religion does to your lifetime. Otherwise, you'd be confronted by the Mormon War, wherein Brigham Young ordered the membership organized to fight the US Army, including blowing up arms supplies and depleting food supplies. That's still not considering the historical conflicts between ROMAN Christianity and anything else, having enabled and conducted the death of the Byzantine Christians, given up the monopoly fight against Protestantism (still excluding Mormon baptism), I merely note that the Western Christians represented by the "evangelical" neoconservative Republicans remain in denial of anything Eastern being relevant or "good", whether Christian, Muslim, Zoroastrian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Sikh, etc.

Not so many months ago, Ace posted to "pray" that Pakistan attack India in order to relieve tensions between the US and Pakistan over the indigenous mountain tribal persistent defiance bordering Afghanistan. The American neoconservative war drums were beating to attack Pakistan.

Radical? Forcing people to vote for Obamalite GHWB Romney, the only "sane" candidate.

What I endorse (because these are the only choices I'm left with) is choosing an ulcer versus being drawn and quartered.  At least with an ulcer, there is a good chance at containing some damage until it's gone.  If I'm drawn and quartered, I'm dead.  It's over.

236 Matt in Maine @213:  "I just don't know if that is a small, very vocal minority, or a large, mostly silent plurality."

I think it's probably a small minority.  What negative information on Mormonism remains on the internet is buried beneath pages and pages and pages of pro-Mormon sites.  The history is pretty well white-washed.  Even in the Midwest, where the story played out, most people remain ignorant of the facts and those who do know them seem to want to just put it behind us.

I understand that desire but I believe Santayana was right.  The world is not reborn anew every day.  Its current condition is the product of the years that went before and we would be ill-advised to forget them.

On a personal note, I oppose Romney as the Rep candidate but my opposition has only tangentially to do with his religion.  It stems from his actions as Governor of Massachusetts and his obviously liberal leanings.  I think hard pursuit of goals is an admirable quality in a candidate.  It is the goals themselves that I question.

Well, my hope is that we get a new Justice Department in January that will actually start prosecuting voter fraud in places like Philly.  If we can just document it this time, we can get some perps throwen in jail and maybe have a fighting chance of a clean election in 2016.

I get seriously pissed at liberal elites like Gene Robinson who think this vote fraud stuff is nonsense.  They have no clue what really goes on in the inner cities of Philadelphia, Newark, Camden, Baltimore, Cleveland, Chiago, Gary, etc.  Local unions and Democrat machines have this down to a science.  People are bussed in from the safe states into cities in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania.  They vote, they get a hot meal and probably a few bucks, and they are taken home.   Democrats send people around to fill out and collect absentee ballots from infirm people in nursing homes and hospitals.  In 2006 they were caught sending people into prisons in PA to get absentee ballots from felons who were not even legally able to vote - at the same time they did everything possible to delay sending ballots to soldiers overseas.

Posted by: nickless at March 08, 2012 06:30 AM (MMC8r)

302 Why do Republicans label all Hispanics as illegals and talk about the "invaders".

Why do you make stuff up?  Why do you label Republicans as anti-Hispanic when we welcome everyone, as long as they come here legally?  Why are you so anti-law?

Why does nearly 65-70% of the population want secure borders and an adherence to enforcement of, you know, actual laws?  Why do you hate laws?

Why do you make proclamations with no substantiated evidence to back up your racism/bigotry theories?

336 I'm trying to understand the logic behind pushing for Newt and/or Santorum to drop out. Romney's risk of not getting the nomination is very small at this point. He no longer needs to attack Newt or Santorum and Newt in particular has basically abandoned attacks and is focusing on positive messaging and criticizing Obama. That's good for the base to hear. The anti-Romney sentiment stems in large part from the sense that folks have that Romney was shoved down their throats. So why not use this remaining time in the primary to campaign in a positive way and try to get conservatives to like him? I don't buy that it's a money issue at this point. He no longer needs to outspend the others five to one. He just needs to make appearances, say the right things, and project a little bit of "I *do* give a shit about what conservatives want" for a few weeks. And he really needs the practice at addressing media questions/attacks, so it would be best to do that now.

342 Indeed. The "corporate/ bureaucratic complex" is a much greater danger to the than the "military/industrial complex"could ever hope to be.
--

From his original draft, Eisenhower included Congress in his warning against the congressional/military/industrial complex -- according to a historian's lecture. No, I haven't seen the draft. But the point resounds as the warning was against the alignment already at play, corporatism being fascistic, the virulent globalism of the UN already having dictated the Korean war without proper military strategy, with monstrous American casualties no thanks to Truman setting UN precedence for US Policy (presuming the US would always monopolice the world, dictating UN Policy).

"At least" Eisenhower limited post-WWII American militancy abroad via the CIA black ops (Operation AJAX Iran; IndoChina "advisers" Vietnam). I've criticized Eisenhower's departing warning as too little, too late, affecting a washing of his hands as Pilot did of Jesus when faced with political opposition. But he DID speak out and remains on record protesting the aggression from American socialist corporatism.

Hell, the lengths that direction has already reached; Panetta not saying anything new, but people beginning to take notice. There is no distinction today between CIA black ops and US Military interventionism (NATO): "Arab Spring" cases in point. And the bureaucracy merging the CIA/USMilitary/DHS is Napoleonic, a valid criticism made by Webster Tarpley (yes, an avowed FDR socialist opposes Obama, corporatism and neoconservatism more effectively than Republican conservatives, no surprise). Given Obama/Holder's application of the GWB/Patriot Act (every neoconservative yet supporting more authoritarianism), according to this POTUS and his Attorney General, American citizens are now guilty until proven innocent, subject to summary execution.

Increasingly, we Americans are subject to violent hazing by our "betters" aka the "meritocracy" that includes Romney.

344 Over at Breitbart.com, Thomas Sowell on the Bell (from an interview at the time that the tape was made): LAMB: Now, what do you think of the press treatment of him? SOWELL: It's been quite gentle. LAMB: You mean, is he a hero? SOWELL: To me? LAMB: No. Basically, I mean, from the press coverage, you've seen, is he a hero to the ...? SOWELL: Well, he's looked at as an idealist who is self-sacrificing and so on. I suppose one could, if one wanted to look at it that way, have seen Hitler that way in his early days. It's just a question of where that kind of idealism leads. He has launched a despicable attack on a young black professor at the law school who doesn't go along with this. A young man named Randall Kennedy, who has written a very thoughtful, intelligent article last June in the Harvard Law Review, questioning some of the assumptions that people are making, people like Derrick Bell and doing it in a very gentlemanly as well as very logical way, empirical way, and that's not what they want. They want the conclusion to be that -- they want him to march in lock step and he won't do it, and they're doing their best to make life impossible for him.

It doesn't seem likely from what I've observed of him.  Would he stay in for the money?  I don't know, maybe.  My concern is that demanding the others leave makes his campaign look weak.  It also seems to indicate an unwillingness to consider the policy concerns of other factions of the party.

It also seems to indicate an unwillingness toconsider the policy concerns of other factions of the party. ----- Who's demanding it now? I think I've seen each of the candidates (or their surrogates) tell the others to drop out. The most recent ones I've seen are from Santorum and Romney. I really dislike Romney and wish a miracle would happen and Newt would prevail, but that's unlikely. Given that, I want Mitt to be a strong candidate (well, as strong as possible). I sincerely believe that the way he becomes a stronger candidate is not to have this thing "wrapped up" by the others dropping out, but instead for him to switch to 1000% positive campaigning salted in with some attacks on Obama. He also really needs to stop with the "hair on fire" stuff. It's clear he views the base with contempt if he characterizes what Gingrich and Santorum are doing as "hair on fire" sideshows instead of valid criticisms of Obama. Mitt needs to start making himself likable and STFU with the digs at conservatives.

356 This is what I'm talking about (quoted from the Hill). Romney is supposed to be our safe candidate who is focused like a laser on the economy... and he makes an unforced error like this. Gawd this is frustrating. Mitt Romney on Wednesday dismissed the notion that his tax plan would benefit the wealthy, saying any analysis of his proposal is inaccurate because he hasn’t “laid out all the details.” “What I put out in my plan was a series of principles that allow our economy to grow and at the same time maintain a neutral budget impact,” Romney said on CNBC. “So I haven’t laid out all of the details about how we’re going to deal with each deduction, so I think it’s kind of interesting for the groups to try and score it, because frankly it can’t be scored, because those kinds of details will have to be worked out with Congress, and we have a wide array of options.” http://tinyurl.com/72hzsvb

President Obama:

“And what I do is I practice it.  And so IÂ’m going to try to lead by example in this situation, as opposed to commenting on every single comment thatÂ’s made by either politicians or pundits.  I would be very busy.  I would not have time to do my job.  ThatÂ’s your job, to comment on whatÂ’s said by politicians and pundits." - speaking to the press gathered for the conference on Tuesday.

It struck me funny. Isn't there a difference in types of reporters? Editorial journalists would "comment" and inject their opinions into politics, right? I thought the rest were supposed to just gather information and share that information.

Am I missing something? Now every journalist can can claim to be an op-ed jornalist and inject whatever they want into stories about the president or any political figure they want to with no repurcussions? I know there is a slant left, but will that come to be understood as the status quo for everything from consumer reporters to traffic reporters now? It wouldn't surprise me. The bits and pieces of crap that come flying out of his teeth seem to grow into giant turds.  They'd be reprimanded for that kind of stuff a few years ago, if not lose their jobs.

Makes it easier to circumvent any code of ethics that profession is supposed to adhere to, especially with His Majesty getting away with saying "that's your job" to journalists in general.

That comment pissed me off and made me wonder all at the same time.
