Concerning the discussion on training funds.  I did staffing studies at three Job Corp Centers.  The Centers were in national parks.  The staff were very fine, dedicated professionals.  Unfortunately, the centers have become a haven for troubled inner city youth.  A good number of the "trainees" were given the option of jail time or a trip to the Job Corp Center.  The courses did not match the need.  Landscaping training...for inner city youth?  Yes, training is a good thing but must the focused on the jobs available in the communities the young people live.

If you mean the oral Act of Contrition that is said during mass, it carries with it the confession of venial sins which are then absolved when communion is received. If you mean the Sacrament of Penance/Confession/Reconciliation then it is usually never on a Sunday, it carries with it the requirements of Purpose of Amendment (meaning you really mean it that you don't want to do it again), true contrition (you really do feel bad), the actual verbal confession, and a penance. In the sacrament you receive Grace from God to help you not repeat your sins or contract new ones. Most catholics rarely take advantage of this sacrament though.

I asked him later why and he said "I wanted you to be old enough to understand it. The subplot of the court case had rape and incest as a part of it and I was worried if you were too young you'd miss that and lose a big part of the book."  I don't think it was that he was afraid I was too young to learn about these things (I probably already had some knowledge of it from the evening news) but rather he wanted me to really internalize the book, in it's full meaning.  Looking back it was a good decision. The Movie before book thing was because he thought the book was better (not that the movie was bad, just that the book was better, and I'm inclined to agree.)

Japanese pitchers are usually on 7day rotations in Japan so the adjustment to 5days is one issue. They also almost exlusively play indoors in Japan so weather conditions in the U.S. become a factor hot/cold, wind etc.   Pride is probably the biggest hurdle for Japanese pitchers. They come here with something to prove to themselves and their family/fans at home and often over pitch and hurt themselves (see Dice-K)  And finally U.S. ball players are simply better hitters, We focus more on the big hits and offense side of the game (except for bunting)  I think the Japanese style of play is much more conservative.

I wonder if the conservative style of Japanese baseball is due   at least in part    to the stature of the players?       Japanese people are, on average,      shorter than Westerners.   That's one of the reasons why it was such a    nice    surprise for the Japanese women to win the World Cup last year.     Their shorter legs make it harder for them to cover as much ground    in the same amount of time    as taller players from other countries,    so they tend to end up more tired and overworked physically than their counterparts.    

Presumably the bases are as far apart in Japanese baseball as they are in American ballparks,   and    the    speed   at which a player can catch and throw the ball is    the same regardless of    their height.       But the time it takes for a      hitter    to reach base    is going to be   a little bit longer    in Japan      than it is in the    MLB.     Better to make the conservative play that will give you a better chance of getting on base than     to make the more audacious play that might get you tagged out    before you can round to second.

Does that make sense?  

I'm really not a baseball fan, but I   do enjoy pondering these kinds of things.

Apparently I need to read this book just to see what people think of my poor state?  Granted I'm from StL, but I spend a fair amout of time down in Souther Mo, (friend's got a farm/ranch/land in Texas Country where the hunting is good and the space is excellent also used to spend a fair amount of time in Steeleville.)

I'll say this, my experience is the Outstate is like any other rural place, you got mostly good, a bit bad and some generally stupid.  I've only felt really scared once, down there, like I had just walked into Deliverance.  Although later another local told me I had stumbled into one of the more xenophobic/meth locals in that area (We were down there on a biology collecting permit, trying to get to new areas of the river to collect, we drifted a bit off our standard path.  Some guy accosted us on the road near the river and a local fishing with his daughter turned tail and left, which is how we knew it was time for us to leave too.)

Yeah, eff the American Library Association.  Back in the day, librarians were neutral, or so it seemed to me when I was growing up.  I'm sure there are still many good librarians, but nowadays it seems like substantial numbers of them have a left-leaning agenda and a political ax to grind.  I dunno if the ALA is "as far left as you can get" - I haven't really looked into it - but the sense I get is that in the past 20 years or so many of our public libraries have been co-opted by high and mid-level administrators who view the world through decidedly PBS-colored lenses.

It's a business decision.     He offended a LOT of the Marlins' fanbase with his comments.     If they don't sanction him somehow, there are going to be a LOT of empty seats in that shiny new stadium.   I think there will be anyway,   but I expect they're   hoping the furor will have faded by the time he comes back.   I don't know that I agree with them on that, but we'll see.

It's not a legal issue; purely a business one.  As a private organization they can do as     they see fit    by way of punishment.    It's no different, really, than an employee getting reprimanded for wearing inappropriate clothes to work in a business that has a strict dress code.   This is just a WAY bigger deal.

Seems to me RvW is part 1 and part 5 with a dash of 3. In order to accomplish #1 they had to create a new right (#3!) which trends it towards #5.  Admittedly things are more complicated than these 5 generalizations, but at least when someone cries "Judicial activism!!!11!" over this law I can force them to define their terms. (My guess is most of their fall back on this one will be 4 and 5, which Kerr is right aren't really that useful.)

The fine would make sense, but I don't think it goes far enough to calm the fanbase.   And he's just started a four year, multi-million dollar contract with the Marlins.   Firing him might require a substantial payout on the part of the Marlins, which cannot be a savory thought given the    cost of the new stadium.

I had the distinct honor of working with a Bataan death march survivor while station at Griffiss AFB in the mid-70s.  He was Phil Arselanian and the Japanese used him, and the other survivors, as slave labor during the war.  They put him to work in the defense industry (manufacturing).  He thought he would be killed by allied bombing.  He harbored on ill feelings toward the Japanese people.  In fact, he appreciated being kept alive by getting scraps of food from some of the Japanese factory workers.  The workers risked death had they been caught giving him extra rations.

If I recall correctly, it's a private art collection, but the owner allows tours / visits.  You may have to have a group, rather than just be an individual (Dallas Moron Meetup?!!?!?!).

Most of the art is okay.  Stereotypical modern art.  And then you go outside.  And you start wandering through the garden sculptures.  And you find a little nook in the tall shrubs, like a hidden room.   So you walk inside, and you find what I assume is an interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

I don't know what the actual installation is called.  But it's two human figures with apples for heads.  A man and a woman.  And their genitals are hilariously huge.

LOL, when my old riding mower was stolen I asked grandyougins if they would be willing to mow the yard for money.  Told them I would pay them $40 to mow it.  Figured they could make some money that way and at $40 a pop I would save a lot of money on a new mower.  So I bought a cheap push mower from WallyWorld.

They mowed it one time and quit.  They liked sleeping late on weekends and it got "too hot" in the Summer. Wound up with a push mower and a riding mower.
