— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday. It's another early day for me, but at least this time I brought news.
The EU Court of Human Blah Blah says that solitary confinement at U.S. supermax prisons does not violate prisoner human rights and so will allow the extradition of Al Qaeda hostage-taker Abu Hamza and four others to stand trial and receive possible sentences to federal pound-them-in-the-ass prisons.
The Weekly Standard has a good piece about how Senate majority leader McConnell steered the JOBS Act to get by reluctant Democrats.
Indonesia was just hit with a major earthquake, in the 8.6 range (USGS is still revising the official number). There has already been one 6.5 aftershock.
T-Paw has officially retired his campaign debt, with help from Rep. Bachmann and Gov. Romney. He also filed papers to officially disband his campaign.
There's going to be an overabundance of Santorum campaign post-mortems today. Let me summarize. Some folks will say it was the primary schedule that sunk him. Some will say it was the Establishment futzing with the rules (e.g. in Florida and Michigan). Some will say it was his social conservatism. All of these people are wrong, especially the last group.
Santorum started this race last year as a long-shot candidate who was widely perceived as not representing all that many Republicans. He ended the race as a long-shot candidate, still perceived as not representing all that many Republicans, but who indisputably attracted solid, respectable support from a core Republican constituency. That's not a shot at him. When a "sure thing" collapses (ahem Hillary), that's news. When a long-shot doesn't quite make it to the finish line, that's just the expected outcome.
It's not like Santorum lost to some upstart that had barely been in politics or anything else before (again, Hillary). Santorum lost to the presumptive nominee, the one everyone thought was going to win. It was, as is typical for Republicans, simply Romney's turn; he paid his dues in 2008 and, no surprise, here he is in 2012. The good news for Santorum is that next time, whether that's 2016 or 2020, he'll have a strong claim for it being his turn.

This is PRECISELY the problem with GOP politics. Why on earth are we still pickingn candidates based on whose turn it is?

I think we confuse cause and effect. It isn't that Romney was selected by the aforementioned dark forces just because he ran in '08. It is that he made a good impression then, built on it, didn't make many mistakes, was fortunate in his choice of opponents, and has convinced folks that he is the best choice for the job this go around. Anyone who still bleats that he was a lock because of the "establishment" wasn't paying attention for the last year.
In '16 (although they won't be running until '20), there will be a particularly strong crop of new, charismatic leaders. I look forward to it. But let's win this year first.

Santorum's been in the campaign from the beginning and nobody said word fucking one about him until it was down to a three man race. And then it was to hail him as the True Conservative in the race.
Really? I'd think you'd have supported him from the beginning, then. I don't like Romney either, but I'm not about to ignore someone else's glaring deficiencies to soothe my ego.
See: Perry, Rick.
People did the same shit with Bachmann and Cain, defending those lunatic fuckups even past the point where THEY THEMSELVES admitted they were fuckups.
And now there's more petulance in the form of "this isn't the way to get my vote." FUCK. YOU.

Embarrass bureaucrats and they will come after you - that is a basic law of government.
The fact that there is nothing to come after, as in this case, won't stop them. No bureaucrat in the history of government has ever been charged with malfeasance for wrongfully going after an individual.
To the bureaucratic mind - people who embarrass them have to be stopped, or the bureaucracy will become laughing stocks instead of occupying their "proper" position as feared rulers of the people.
Where exactly in the constitution does it say that we are to be ruled by bureaucrats?

Um, no. I get tired of hearing all this "it was his turn" shit. Are we talking about a presidential nomination or a game played by elementary school kids?
Maybe he won because he dropped MASSIVE negative ad bombs on anyone who threatened him, knowing they could not respond. And MAYBE he won because he outspent them on an average of 20 to 1. Yet he STILL couldn't get above 35% in most states.
My only hope is he'll drop the same bombs on the Bamster. Don't count on it, even though many of the ads simply write themselves. It'll be more of "he's a nice guy; he's just in over his head" bullshit. Hey, it's the Republican establishment way!!

That is what happened with McCain and Romney. It's also what Ronald Reagan did when he lost to Ford in 1976. Romney spent the time after the 2008 election helping Republicans in almost every state, campaigning and endorsing many of the people who are now in Congress or are governors.
Running against a sitting president is very difficult, and it requires tremendous amounts of money and organization. As we have seen with Governor Perry, you cannot start at the last minute. And as we have seen with both Santorum and Gingrich, you cannot mount a credible campaign if you are not organized and if you don't have enough money.
Romney recognized that early on and that is why he has won the nomination.

I share your hope, and am a little more optimistic. The hard part will be waiting for it to happen. You need to go positive in the early stages to build up the feeling that you're an OK guy. Then, toward the end, you drop the big bombs. It minimizes the enemy's ability to respond, and keeps it fresh in the voters' minds. And it needs to be ruthless.

It ain't going to be the Reverend Santorum's turn next time around unless he learns to stay focused on issues that actually have something to do with being President.
I can't imagine him in a general election, prattling on about the evil of condoms and anal sex or whatever. He's certainly entitled to his own mind on those matters, but the voters really don't want to hear about it. The irony is, he presented himself as THE candidate that could best talk about Obamacare... but his candidacy inspired talk about everything BUT that. Lack of self-discipline to stay on message caused that to happen.

I haven't figured out what his end game is in the Saint Trayvon minstrel show other than his egomaniacal need to make every fucking thing about himself. He's had plenty of opportunities to tell the hucksters and rabble-rousers to calm down and be the post-racial person he campaigned as and he's dropped the fucking ball at every instance. He may have figured out that he's history in November so he may as well trash the hell out of everything on the way out.

Right, the chart that Vic links in post #88 is going to sink the SCOAMF. While Vic has a valid point that the U-3 category is tainted, the SCOAMF regime can't get those unemployment numbers down fast enough even though they're cooking the books.
- >Romney needs to beat the SCOAMF repeatedly over the head with that chart and tell the squishes, "Obama's a nice guy, but he's listening to the wrong people -- this is what they promised and this is what actually happened." The hardcore leftists aren't going to vote for Romney but I think a lot of squishes want to be convinced that they weren't credulous fools taken in by a Marxist flim-flam man.

Bottom line: every day Hussein sits in the white house our nation is defiled. Romney will not defile the nation. And who knows, he may be better than we hoped for.

It's meant to do several things at once: distract the country's attention away from the economy, mobilize his base, stir up more class warfare and divide the nation even more.
He's going down hard in November, and he and the AxelBeast know it, which is what you said. May as well leave as much destruction in his wake as possible.

Yeah, but that was the case in 2008 as well. I'm not sure it wasn't the case in 2000 (though, I supported GWB then, too, so I'm not complaining about that outcome). I suspect it will be the problem until we end near-universal suffrage.
I don't have a problem with women voting, but I do have a problem with low-information voters voting.
Voting should be a revered activity- one we approach with as much seriousness as other major decisions or activities. And, yet, there are too many people who wait until the day before the election (if then) to do any research at all, and some who don't even do that, but just show up at the polls and vote for a letter, or a name they recognize.
I'm not sure how to fix that, but I'm dang sure it needs to be fixed.

He was a bad bad bad bad candidate on many levels. A NotRomney was SO desirable that when there was panic at the disco about Newt reaching threat-level, and a week was spent in concerted effort to knock back that threat to Romney, that a double down on the Santorum horror show was the only possible result. Stupid move in my view. It was a waste of time and effort, he could never never win the general and he was very very energizing to the other side, repellant to a large segment of his own side, and was not going to win or say anything good for the brand. He was ten times as undisciplined as Newt, could never resist baiting, and was really a flip side of Obama with regard to his not very strong regard for limited government.
Romney's awful but I hope Obama is so much worse that ordinary people will switch horses in frustration at his promises of more of the same "guidance" to a world of high energy costs and fantasy employment schemes and shady dealing green adventures. Romney's what we're stuck with. Maybe kill Newt week was a bad choice.

Because the voters keep voting for them?
I find all this "it was his turn" stuff to be kind of silly. Romney got more people to vote for him than Santorum and Newt did. It's not that complicated. If you are going to be mad, be mad at the 2/3rds of the GOP who vote for "the next guy in line".

He is probably equally responsible for Obama winning in 2008 as McShitty.
But go back and look at our candidates since RR who I have come to realize won by a fluke. Just about every candidate we have had has been a damn "moderate". And we have won only when the Dems put up a candidate who was even more shitty than ours.

I so hope this is correct. It's time for an actual Conservative party again- and the GOP just isn't it anymore. Unfortunately, we also can't afford to wait 4 more years to stop the SCOAMT, so we're stuck with them.
Maybe if Romney wins in November, we can immediately start laying the groundwork to get some actual Conservatives sent to DC. The best way to make that happen (but this is so far fetched I hesitate to mention it) is to get some of the "Real Conservatives" in Congress (Jim DeMint, for example, or Paul Ryan, etc.) to switch to whatever the new party is.

"The only thing I can tell you, Ken, is that Romney came by here in January. I think it was the 13th, the middle of the month. And I met with him after the show. It was about 4:30. I met with him for almost an hour, and he left here for a huge fundraiser a mile down the road, mile and a half. And during that conversation -- I've mentioned this to you -- he said to me that he wouldn't be surprised if he ended up being a one-term president because he's got to shake things up. This country can't go the direction it's going or his children and grandchildren and nobody else's will have a future. When he was talking about that, he sounds just like you and me.
He sounds just like you and me when we talk about it. He was very affirmative in his acknowledgement to me of the threats posed by Obama and the Democrats to this country. If you had been in that conversation, you would not have doubted his conservatism at that moment. But then you would read where he has said in years past, "Look, I'm not a conservative. I'm not one of these," and you'd scratch your head. I'm not saying it wiped any of those other instances out. I'm just telling you that that day, he sounded like me. He was fairly echoing the fears I have about what's in store for this country if the Democrats are not stopped. This transformation, this belief that our founding was unjust and immoral and we've had a fraudulent country for 200-plus years."
The "one term president" statement was very interesting. I wonder if he would be willing to step aside if his popularity was in the toilet because of the structural changes to entitlements he makes? (hypothetical)

We have everything the MFM needs to generate a "Legitimate 3rd Party" right there- Guy with some actual name recognition (in the right circles), ran for a major party nomination, and held registration in that Party. Doesn't seem "bitter" about a loss in the primaries (I think he dropped out before any actual primaries had been held), and is now running for a party that people have at least heard of. How hard do you think it would be for the MFM to leave out some of the more kooky things in the Libertarian Platform until, oh, say, October?

I also think it was the right thing to do. Your Head Football Coach represents you, as a University, when he's doing the kinds of things Bobby-P did, and getting away with it, it says bad things about your university.
Despite that, I suspect they only fired him after a large number of alumni called up and explained that he could go, or their checks could.

Who will get that money? University professors, leftist think tanks, green energy scam artists, union bosses, democrat consulting groups, etc. They will just be transferring money to a group of people who do not create jobs and spend their money in elitist hang-outs like The Hamptons.
I last saw this with Bill Clinton's election. I was working in a nice furniture store in sales. Right after the election, when Bush lost, we had a whole bunch of new customers coming in buying expensive furniture. All jolly, like their ship came in. And they all bought on credit. And they were all democrats, who somehow thought that Clinton's election meant that their ship had come in. Of course, that wasn't true.
There are a bunch of people in this country who have very poor reasoing skills. They are susceptible to this class envy stuff because they think this means THEY will get more money. It is, of course, a misunderstanding that JEF is all too willing to promote. We have to make them understand that they will not get the money. Obama didn't deliver on those sacks of cah everyone thought would magically appear in their mailbozes. We need to remind them of that.

Allen,
Gary Johnson reminds me of Tony Shaloub's character in Galaxy Quest - completely nonplussed at the events raging around him because he's stoned out of his mind.

eh - no I don't think so. Is the goal of the primary to choose the Most Conservative of the Conservatives? Or is the goal of the primary to choose someone who is competitive in the general election?
Someone who gets 90+% of the conservative vote in Alabama is not necessarily the same person who can successfully flip OH, PA or MI to flip from blue to red.
Now I agree that it's kinda stupid to enshrine IA and NH as "first in the nation" but I don't agree with putting the reddest of the red at the front of the line.

@AllenG,
I just don't share you enthusiasm for a 3rd party now or in the near future, even if it is was the third party of "People with exactly my opinion."
Sucky thing is our system is decidedly a Multiple of 2 party system. Because we elect a president on a simple "most votes" rather than an actual 50%+1 majority, the creation of any party that steals votes from either side is a benefit to the other side. So a Conservative party splits the Right vote, which basically secures the presidency for the dems for decades until one of the Right parties collaspses entirely. Unless you get a party on the left too (Neo-Socalists or something) that steal a roughly proportionate number of votes. Then you have a 4 way race to the top.
Note a few things: 1) This doesn't apply to the Senate or Congress, a 3 or more party system could work there, although I'd guess it'd break down by regions more than anything. 2) This could be solved with a run off style election where you have to take 50%+1 to win or you go into a top 2 run off. Actually such a system could encourage even more than 3 parties. But I'm not sure that the same effect wouldn't be created by a robust and diverse primary process.

My take is that if the guy was just having an affair, okay. I'd consider him a pig and a lowlife, and if I had a son of college age I wouldn't be wanting him to view BP as a positive role model. But when you hear all the details about Petrino hiring the young woman with whom he was having the affair, it just gets disgusting. From what I understand she's supposed to be getting married in a few months (I wonder if her fiance is having second thoughts about that). What if she'd decided to break off the relationship with Petrino in light of her impending marriage? Would he have fired her? How would that not have been an inappropriate exercise of power? It was inappropriate already that he'd been involved in the hiring process without disclosing that he knew her. Talk about conflict of interest!
The whole thing stinks to high heaven. I have no pity for Petrino, but I do feel for his wife and children. What it must be like to have THAT guy living under the same roof as you.

President Barack Obama is intensifying his campaign for higher taxes on top U.S. earners, casting the issue against Republican opposition as one of fairness and support for the middle class.
The president is holding an event at the White House today to promote the so-called Buffett Rule, a plan to set a minimum tax rate for top earners. While Obama's schedule offered little detail on the event, deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said in a Twitter message that it will feature millionaires who support "fairness" accompanied by their secretaries.

Romney Support Historically Low for Winning Candidate
Romney's 42% support in the final 2012 nomination preference poll ranks among the lowest Gallup has measured for a nominee in its final poll since 1972... Specifically, no other Republican winner in the primary era has had as little as 42% support in Gallup's final measure of nomination preferences, with George W. Bush's 57% in 2000 the lowest before now.
Across both parties, only George McGovern had less support among a winner in either party, being the preferred nominee of 30% of Democrats just before the 1972 Democratic convention. Jimmy Carter, who was supported by 48% of Democrats in 1980 as he sought re-election, is the only other nominee who was below 50% support in the final nomination preference poll.
Romney's support among rank-and-file Republicans at this point -- when his nomination is all but assured -- pales in comparison to that for past nomination winners at similar stages in their campaigns.

And as for his limited time in office, that's a feature, not a bug. The fact that he 'trash talks' about the enemy is a damn fine distinction from the kind of spinless collegiality we've seen so often among those in power.

@AllenG,
Obviously history shows 3 parties existing before, but I think that the modern notion of politics exlcudes this (with platforms and conformity and such.) My romantic view of history also tells me we actually were concerned with the character of our leaders back then, and you know..issues. Moreso than now (but everything looks better with age on it, no?)
My focus would be to shift the party in the same way you suggest creating a new one. Focus on Legislature and State races (Who become the future party leaders) and push the entire party in the proper direction. It avoides the complications of a 3rd party.
My history on Whigs is a little short, but my understanding is they were mostly blown up by the time the Republicans really entered the field and that the destruction (self or otherwise) was fairly quick anyway (within one presidential cycle). I'd argue that's not really the case with the current republican party, it's still fairly strong and it's collapse would be more than one cycle. So the two aren't entirely comparable.

Same day primaries! Solves all of these problems. Granted it creates the incredibly nasty problem of having to muster up a national compaign. Ok that won't work.
A compromise then. Regional primaries. We group them closer together in huge chunks and randomly decide which chunk go first each time. I'd imagine you'd still get enough diversity to prevent someone from sweeping the first chunk (if you set them up right) unless that person was really and truely inevitable (the incredibly popular kind).
Posted by: tsrblke at April 11, 2012 05:50 AM (SYrwI)
Well, it would really only be the second time in our history that it had happened, so I don't think "comparable" enters into it.
And the fact is that the current party leadership (both elected and appointed) have a great deal of weight regarding the "farm team." I'll point to the Dede Scuzzy-whatsit ordeal, among others, there.
I'm not sure we have the kind of time it would take to accomplish "change from within." Let's say we get the most Conservative of Conservative Candidates elected across the majority of states. They fill up their house legislatures and so forth.
Then they're stuck there for years (or decades) while they wait for an opening to run for national office. The rules are so skewed in the favor of incumbents, that those who would be more conservative often choose not to run just so they don't impoverish themselves.
Think about it, 2010 was a major shift to the right- and we managed to shift a whopping 60+ (63?) seats in the house- and most of those were democrat losses, not people running in primaries against incumbent Republicans.
A third party means you don't have to "wait," and at the local and State level, you're more likely to have some actual success.

Most of us have heard about how the media won't report on black-on-white crime. We also may know that authorities sometimes sweep it under the rug due to political pressure, usually with a wink and a nod. But not so in rural Alabama, where the police actually told a white crime victim that they "don't mess" with a local black motorcycle gang.

Summary -- White truck driver pisses off black motorcycle gang member, 30-40 gang members chase down the guy and stab him repeatedly, he lives, cops won't do a thing about it.

If we're discussing reforming the primary process, someone, I think it was Geraghty, had a great rolling regional system that ramped up the number of electoral votes. It was logical and elegant and will never ever be implemented because of those reasons.

@AllenG,
Don't get me wrong those are all very good points. But I think that a change of culture is necessary to pull this off firstly so no matter how you do it you're going to have the same problems. 3rd party has the same success at the local and state level, but gets hosed either by an incumbant or via a vote split in the state level.
A sigificant culture switch and a local/state leader can ding up the establishment. Marco Rubio stands at the example to that.
3rd party or change from within, I feel the strategy is likely the same in the long run. But I'm of the mind it's easier to steer a party than it is to develop a new national one in the money dependent political word we live in.

Did you see the video on Drudge where a black mob beats a white tourist right in front of the Courthouse in downtown Baltimore (about 2 blocks from the central police station). They beat him, took his watch, pulled off his clothes and one loevly young man hung his balls in the guys fact (teabagged).
But don't worry, our wonderful chief of police said that it's not racially motivated.

The death knoll for Santorum was not getting on the ballot in Virginia -- this communicates to more sophisticated voters that his organization was lacking. You gotta know the rules. The failure in 2008 was in part due to the GOP lacking a GOTV campaign during the last week -- while I was sympathetic to Santorum, I couldn't even vote for him in the primary.
If Willy Mitt comes out with the long knives for Obama like he did in the primary, he'll move up a notch in my book. Negative campaigning works like all hell, as we have to depress turnout on the Dem side. I've volunteered for tire/throat slashing duty.

I saw a Romney commercial while walking on the treadmill at the YMCA. Good, effective, hit directly at the SCOAMF on taxes. Ahhh, the decision to take the family on a short vacation for spring break in CSL after last month's medical mishhaps and work stress was a good one. Of course, I am working on my laptop on a client's case (I will truly relax only when I am dead) as the rest of the brood sleeps off 1) too many trips down the water slide (The Boy), 2) shadowing some handsome 15 year old to try to get him to notice her (Eldest Daughter), 3) the stress of being 5 years old with too much to do in a sunny tropical paradise (The Small Irritable One) and 4) three too many pina coladas and too much hip hop dancing on the Snorkel/Party Boat yesterday (She Who Must Be Obeyed).
Now I just have to finish writing a complaint and a letter, read my e-mail and pone messages, and I will go swim in the sea for an hour (and hope not to be eaten by one of my namesakes) before we all trek over to frolic with the dolphins this afternoon.
Hope you are all doing well.

Yeah I saw the videos (there are 2 different ones capturing the assault) -- nope, nothing racial at all there though that was a white guy on the ground and a group of blacks robbing him blind after coldcocking him.
Then we have this sweet nugget of misinformation from NPR, the liberal loving cockbites running propaganda on our tax dimes:
Ifill announced "Martin, who was black, was on his way to a convenience store in a mostly white gated community when George Zimmerman, who is white, shot and killed him after a disputed altercation." Martin was painted as “carrying only candy and a soft drink" and "was discovered by police lying face down in the grass.”
http://tinyurl.com/cwmygcr (Newsbusters link)
So now Zimmerman has been fully demoted to white; no longer even a passing mention of Hispanic. The one drop rule has now passed through the ass of the camel. Sasha and Malia -- white, by this logic.

@335 -- Romney should link every racial incident (escalating black on white violence) to Holder. If this is repeated, it will create a strong subconscious link in the viewer, associating Holder with the breakdown of law and order.
Speaking of subconscious attacks, last night in prime time, both National Geographic channel and H2 presented documentaries about cults, with an emphasis on the Warren Jeffs cult. Of course, it culminated with a discussion on Jonestown. Let the Mormon bashing begin!
And don't forget the whole TrailinBloodOn issue was introduced to undermine Rubio's campaign.

Via the PJ Tatler (http://tinyurl.com/7mpmrjx):
Letter to Secretary Napolitano: Can You Please Not Relocate a Disease Lab to Tornado Alley?
The Department of Homeland Security said that its plans to relocate an agricultural disease research lab from an island off New York to KansasÂ’ Tornado Alley will end up costing double the original estimate.
The extra cost — a total of approximately $1.1 billion — will be incurred by trying to reduce the risk of a disease outbreak and incorporating new security recommendations in the vulnerable area.
The National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility is moving to a site in Kansas near thousands of head of cattle that is frequently hit by dangerous tornadoes, said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who is asking DHS to consider moving it somewhere less risky.
...
Diseases that could infect herds should the facility become compromised by a twister include foot-and-mouth disease.
A Homeland Security report estimated the disease outbreak risk from the proposed Kansas facility at nearly 70 percent over the next 50 years.
Lord please forgive my blasphemy, but Jesus on a bicycle. How fucking STUPID are these people?

It's only illegal if you get caught. I was driving in Downtown baltimore the day before Christmas a long time ago and a bunch of "youths" jumped from a bench in front of my car. I stopped and they started to encircle my car. The street was practically deserted. Fortunately for me I had my Ruger .40 in the console. I let these little honor students observe such hardware and they decided to quietly go back to their bench.

#208. I was for Romney in 2008 because I felt the economy would be the big issue in November and because in 2008 Romney was a fresh face to counter Obama's fresh face. This year I suspect it is going to be personal freedom. The economy is but a small part of that issue. Watch Obama try to use Romney's Mormonism to justify his own attacks on religious freedom, particular in forcing the Catholic Church to accept abortion and gay marriage or get out of the business of providing charitable services. The feds after all did wage war on the Mormon Church and forced them to change doctrine as a condition for admitting Utah into the Union.

Remember that the GOP started because of the failure of the Whigs to address the salient issue of the 1840's and early 1850's, the expansion of slavery into the Territories. Eventually, this morphed into questioning the very existence of The Pecuiliar Institution itself in the South. The Whigs were the Establishment GOP of their day and died because they were not willing to get past their own willingness to negotiate with themselves over the issue of Slavery, while Democrats by and large defended the institution's continued existence in the South to keep their coalition together.
John C. Fremont, a very young Abraham Lincoln, and other Whigs built the Republican Party out of the ashes of the Compromise of 1850.
My take is that were are faced with a danger that is nearly as acute as that of 1860, national insolvency, one made more acute by Obama's socialist overreach and will-to-power. The GOP is apparently convinced that gaining a few committee chairmanships in the Senate will set things aright. They have no idea what is going on in the country, and lost touch with Reaganism a long time ago. People like Palin, Ron Paul, and Santorum are scorned by the Party. And the Party's idea of a New Idea is the Ryan Plan, which doesn't consider balancing the budget for forty years.
The unseriousness of this effort is astounding. The resemblance of the GOP to Canada's old, bankrupt Progressive Conservatives or the Whigs grows with each passing day.
It is in this environment that a viable Third Party coalition of conservatives and libertarians becomes not only possible, but probable. The GOP in Washington turned away from the ideas that made it a great coalition under Reagan. Now, it is about Chairmanships and Swag. That's not a party that deserves to win elections, or to continue to exist for that matter.

Second - what market could be much more competitive than the market for books? The sub-market for e-books is an artificial thing; it's "stuff to read", Stupid. No one could ever control that market. What a great example of socialism at work - wealth re-distribution at its most efficient!

Tens of millions of dollars in negative ads targeting him....in a primary, the GOP establishment doing everything they can to get their liberal choice of Romneycare the nomination, and so-called 'conservative' bloggers forgiving Romney for every single thing he ever did in the past (since he never accomplished anything conservative as an elected official) and doing their best to help him along.........that is why Santorum is out.
Now for the fun part, all the guns are going to be turned back onto Newt because all of a sudden he is going to be in the 40% range.

Sorry - the market just shouldn't be viewed that narrowly. People can still read the same stuff in other formats. They may like e-books better, but that doesn't justify DOJ getting away with that narrow a market definition. You can always find people liking one thing better than some other thing; you can't define a market that way when you're imposing Draconian governmental penalties.

This. E-books aren't just competing with other E-books, they're competing with paper books as well. Also, at the rates most publishers work, the transition from "traditional" to "ebook" doesn't really save them that much money. It's not hard to believe a paperback, at least, isn't much more than a dollar cheaper to produce as an e-book instead of as an actual book.
The publishers still have to pay their staff and the author, after all, and whoever actually sells you the book (Amazon, or whoever) is still looking to turn a profit, too.
And, quite frankly, it's none of the DoJ's business, even if the field was more narrow. People still have free will- if they don't like the value they're getting for an ebook, they don't have to buy one.

Posted by: Vic at April 11, 2012 11:02 AM (YdQQY)
Meh. Who cares? They can't put any sort of lid on something so easy to copy and small as a book file. Let them try to keep gouging people. Piracy will just go through the roof.
People who think they can charge and arm and a leg for something that anyone can just pick up off the street for nothing will soon find themselves out of existence.
What keeps the ebook prices up, though, is not collusion on the part of the distributors but the government supports of textbooks and academic books (keeping prics in the "way insane" range). WIthout that distortion of the book market, prices would naturally fall to where they should be for ebooks ... about $0.35 a download.
But, the government wants to keep perverting the market and the distributors want to keep trying to draft off the government screwing up the market ... then piracy will be the way the normal person will go. Such is life.

Started by whom? Hispanic groups have been conspicuously absent from this whole thing, and the media has been blaring "white hispanic" as loud as they can for the last couple of weeks.
The only ways I can see a race war starting if he ends up dead are if a) he actually is killed by someone "seeking revenge," or b) if the Media and Usual Suspect Race Baiters actively agitate for one by pointing out that he'll never be found guilty- and that with his death also goes any chance of a civil suit for Martin's family.
But, on their own, I don't think most of the mob will think that far, so I it would take actual agitation on the part of the MFM and the Race Baiters.

The difference being that Mike Nifong played buddy-buddy with the media from the beginning- even helping to make sure the case gained national attention. The Special Prosecutor had nothing to do with the case until it was already a national story.
Honestly, I get the vibe that she's not opposed to the publicity (what ambitious public official would be?), but that she's mainly concerned with preventing race riots.
Which doesn't speak well for Zimmerman's chances to avoid prosecution, but I suspect that is secondary in her mind.

Just a complete WAG, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out she's got nothing with which to prosecute Zimmerman, and knows it, but also knows that actually just proclaiming him innocent would both start race riots and end her career- so she's furiously trying to come up with something with which she can charge him, or trying to figure out some way not to get laughed out of court when she charges him on manslaughter charges.

My guess is the prosecutor puts him on trial for manslaughter, he goes into solitary for a few months for his protection, then either the judge tosses the case for something like a 5th amendment violation (no, I'm not going to defend that one, we already had that discussion) or it goes to trial and he is acquitted.
After that, he starts suing everyone in sight for making him end up in jail awaiting trial, including Sharpton, NBP, and NBC.
