I went to clone my big main drive on my home system yesterday morning. Standalone clone went fine (though it took many hours), switched the new drive to primary, old drive as secondary, booted up, oh what's this?  Hardware change, sorry no boot for you, please use the repair option from your CD.  Oh, no can do, both drives are encrypted and the CD boot doesn't load the driver.  Oh well, put the original drive back as primary and reboot, oh, so sorry, hardware change, please use the repair option from your CD.  Arg.

Right now I have the box up on a spare drive that I put a minimal install on and am copying, again, the old primary to yet another disk but unencrypted.  Presumably, I can then repair and boot the live system and go through the clone again, this time unencrypted.

These multiGig drives take forever to copy.  PITA.

After decades of computer use and many hard drive failures and switchouts I have determined that software backup programs are shit.

What I do now is keep all of my program outputs (files created) in a single directory which I backup to an external hard drive. If my computer goes down I simply reload all the software from scratch on a clean install and then restore the files in that directory.

It is a LOT less material to backup.  The problem now is with last two new computers wifey got.  No disks with computer. Must make a mirror image of computer.

I'm going to ponder getting a smaller SATA drive to use as primary unencrypted, and mounting the big encrypted drive on /usr, something that W7 allows I think.  Must RTFM.

Perhaps that's why it wants me to boot from the install disk and do a repair.  The rub is that the disk encryption drivers aren't loaded when you boot from the CD.  There may be a way to load the drivers, if I put them on a separate disk and I will probably read up on it today at work.  Meanwhile I'll take advantage of my extra external disk and copy the primary to it unencrypted.

I went around and around with two employers over this. At that time it basically came down to whether you were paid hourly or salary. The NLRB ruled twice in my favor.

There is an exception, however, to that method of determination. If you transport company equipment over state lines twice or more in six months you are ineligible for overtime. Apparently it lobbied by truckers, but I'm not sure whether it was by trucking companies or unions. I guess it had to do with getting paid hourly v by the mile.

All I know is that the NLRB didn't consider our company truck as company equipment and I won. I would've won bigger but I had transported some tents twice during one six month period so those six months didn't count. Thinking back, since the tents were rented, I probably could've argued they weren't company equipment and gotten six more months of overtime.

BTW, I was classified as exempt myself in a non-supervisory position.  Never argued about it but I took every advantage to refuse overtime. My feeling was that you didn't argue that kind of shit until you were ready to quit, especially in a right to work State.

Look at Newgg.com for "TV Tuner".  It gets complicated pretty quickly, though.  That's why most people stick with cable even though they rape you on the price!

Well, there is/was one. I had a degree and was a low level supervisor (field director) but got paid hourly. Things might have turned out differently if I ran a department or office I guess, but the NLRB ruled in my favor basically because I was paid hourly. The fact that I was not able to fire people might also had something to do with their decision.

She's agreed to forgo the land-line (we'll be increasing our Cell Phone expenditures, but we still end up saving money), and we should be able to get any non-cable show we watched through some combination of NetFlix, Hulu+, and Amazon Instant Video.

As far as a DVR for broadcast TV, you can use a computer for that.

I've actually done that before.  To do it, now, would set me back $300 - $500 (my poor desktop machine is feeling as Curmudgeonly as Vic or BackwardsBoy, I think), and I don't have that kind of money to shell out.

3.  Regular Nords and Swedes are often in fear of their lives in their own land.  Their cultural norms are trod on every day to an ever increasing extent.

4.  The Leftists in his nation (and throughout Europe) are the ones who bear 95%+ of the responsibility for this invasion.  Indeed, Lefties have been caught admitting that they are working to replace indiginous people with these "easily controlled" foreigners.

5.  Euro nations have ceded their rights to Brussels - they can't resolve these issues democratically any more, because they will be over-ruled.

 

 

 

I think all this raises a question - What is the right way for people in nations invaded by hordes of 3rd world scum to defend their own freedom, culture, and way of life?  What should they be doing right now?

Way way back in my early working days with large company, you were considered a supervisor if you had a supervisor's manual. That was foreman and above.  The only people who were considered "professional" were the degreed Engineers.  Not even the degreed chemists in the lab were considered "professionals".

By the time I retired even "leads" were considered supervisory and nearly everyone was considered professional, whether they had a degree or not.

I wasn't thinking of doing the same, but I ended up keeping the land line and cutting the service to the bare minimum.  Only local calls.  This allows me to have a line for 911 as well as when the power is out.

Then I put on long distance from Pioneer Telephone.  3 cents a minute and they handle all my local-long distance calls plus real long distance.  No fees, no minimum monthly.. my bills from them are usually about $4 a month.

Really.  In DFW, for instance, Dallas used to be the only area with a real "Gang Problem."  They had some branches of the Bloods and Crips, and a few others, to boot.  So, one day, Dallas PD decided the best way to combat the gangs was to be the biggest, best armed gang in the city.

So they did, and ran all the gangs out of Dallas proper.  But those gangs didn't disband, they just found new territory.  So, following Dallas's lead, the new community (I think Grand Prairie was the first) did the same thing.  Now, basically the gangs are on a circuit.  They'll move in until the city gets ticked off enough to really crack down, and then they'll move on.

Well, if my solution is too extreme, then what's to be done?  Just live with it?  I am open to alternate ideas - sadly nobody in authority is taking the issue seriously enough.  And the jails are full - what's to be done if we try to lock them all up?

And as far as I'm concerned, the "old mob" was plenty bad enough.  And because of the restrictions on dealing with it, how many people had to spend their lives paying protection money to thugs?  How many cities were made even more corrupt and lawless as a result of their activities?  How many witnesses to crimes disappeared before taking the stand?  Even if you discount the 'consentual crimes' element - the mob was and is a bad, bad thing.

I'm amazed at the human capacity to tolerate injustice so long as it's not their own ox being gored.

I was watching an MSDNC news clip somewhere where this commentor gave a perfect set of reasons why we need to end the marriage penalty permanently (I believe it is currently ended through this year? Or was it through last year?) In any case she was lamenting that if you have two married people with equal incomes they get hammered in the tax code...then the punch line, she wasn't complaining about the marriage penalty, she was saying this subsidizes "Stay at home moms." which apparently we should quit doing.

I'm not entirely sure where she was going with that one. I mean sure, if a parent stays at home there's less taxes paid then if they worked, of course there's also less income. Also we do subsidize child care (I'd have to do the fairly complex math to see if and when the marriage penalty and the childcare credit start to cancel each other out.)  The whole thing was somewhat bizzare.  I wasn't sure whether to just be happy that the goal was to end the marriage penalty or be confused about the line of attack.

In any case, I doubt many families are making tons of these distinctions solely on the tax code anyway. To teach family their own, some will want to work, some will have to, every family's situation and desires is different.

255 I don't know the history of the home mortgage interest deduction.  All I know is that it is factored into the value of a home.  How much house you can afford is determined by your debt ratio.  Paying less in taxes gives you more disposable income.

If the home mortgage interest deduction disappeared tomorrow, everyone's home would plummet in value by another 10% (just a guess).  Not a popular idea.

Because you don't pay interest on other forms of housing?? It's the interest that's deductible not the payment. Same with school tuition. You can deduct the interest on the loan.

If you paid taxes on that interest and the entity that collected the interest paid taxes on it then it would be taxes twice. Money is often taxed twice but mortagages shouldn't be. The entire reason for buying a house et al is to grow equity.

It has little to do with how many times something is taxed or Credit Card Interest or car loans would also be tax deductible.  The way I see it was another way to use the tax code to seek a desired outcome (more people buying houses vs. renting) and the Tax code shouldn't be used for this purpose, it subsidizes unwise decisions.

I never got the "Home as building equity" thing either. A home is like any other investiment, it will likely go up in the long term (the stock market does tend to average 7% over any 10 years that don't begin or end in a recession) but it could drop out at any time (or not go up at all.) I've got lots of friends who bought houses in 2007 with the idea of "starting to build equity" rather than "Flushing money down the toliet renting."  They're all out tons of money now (and since they bought small homes and/or condos have to choose between moving or trying to raise a family in an area built for single people.)

I'm not against home ownership by any stretch of the imagination, I just don't think we should need governmental push to make people buy them.

Regardless what they are full of, that is what they did. Similarly, I have known a 90 yr old and 100 yr old with licenses. Neither was safe to drive.

Agreed, ADA has a specific clause in it somewhere about not being a danger or "undue burden."  To potential to cause an accident eliminates the applicability of ADA.  (See also cases of physicians/surgeons with various disorders that cause them to have problems performign surgeries.)

I could have sworn I answered these questions hours ago.  The Norwegian nazis are a fairly organized bunch, and they have contact with nazis all over the world.  They are dedicated to bringing terror to the bad people (anyone not pasty white) in their midst, and don't mind shooting and bombing their countrymen, who they consider as guilty for the bad stuff going on as the brown people are.

289 Aha!  A simpler solution to my clone problem:

If Windows is damaged and cannot start, the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk allows you to permanently decrypt the partition/drive before Windows starts. In the Rescue Disk screen, select Repair Options > Permanently decrypt system partition/drive. Enter the correct password and wait until decryption is complete. Then you can e.g. boot your MS Windows setup CD/DVD to repair your Windows installation.

Now it will only take me 20 hours to fix it once I get home.
