The 2012 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced and includes even more proof that journalism is dying: both the Huffington Post and Politico won one.

The Buffett Rule was defeated in the Senate yesterday. The Democrats fell nine votes short of the required 60. Susan Collins voted with the Democrats. Mark Pryor crossed over to vote with the Republicans.

Space Shuttle Discovery is set to make its final flight today (though not under its own power) on its way to its final resting place at the Smithsonian. D.C. people, it'll pass over the National Mall between 10 and 11 am.

Yes, I realize that. But, then Obama cancelled its successor, the Constellation program. It was going to cost $3.5 Billion per year to keep the shuttle program alive. Obama pisses that much away on golf outings and campaign trips in AF1.

91 So, anyone hear about the lady in Georgia convicted for Vehicular Manslaughter (among other things) because her 4 year old got away from her while they were crossing (jay-walking) the street and got hit by a car?

It apparently happened some time ago, but it was in the news this morning because she's apparently been granted a new trial, and her lawyer is trying to get all the charges tossed.

My question: were the people on the original jury all childless, or were their worse circumstances than the summary I heard indicated? Because I have good, well behaved, and (generally) obedient kids, and they sometimes dash away from me. It's not hard to believe that in the 10 - 15 feet it would take me to realize what had just happened, and then catch up to them, they could be hurt. I'm not sure why the great State of Georgia was looking for someone to blame, here.

Philadelphia city commissioners are investigating an unusual series of over-votes in last year's primary election - 83 voting divisions citywide where the official vote totals were bigger than the recorded number of voters who showed up.

In most locations, the discrepancies were small, just a handful of votes. In many instances, minor procedural mistakes could account for the anomalies.

But so far, the bulk of the over-voting has not been explained.

Until they understand what happened, the commissioners say, they cannot rule out the possibility of deliberate, illegal efforts to run up votes for favored candidates, with the perpetrators losing count as they tried to cover their tracks.

115 I finally figured out a time saving mothering device. When the kids bring home their spelling/vocab words on monday, I copy them. I then put them in the car. I start working on them with the kid strapped in the back seat. By Wed, usually, we've learned them all and haven't had to spend an "at home" second on them--only car time and we have 100% on every test.

Which would normally be just an annoyance, but we had a Carolina Wren nesting there and she *had* a hatched clutch of five babies in the nest. I say had because the serpent fucker ate FOUR of them. I chased him out of the basket and the bastard slunk off with four big lumps in his body. Luckily, I saw the mama come back a little while ago and she coaxed the last baby out of the nest and they went hopping off together. To relocate, I guess. I hope the little guy makes it but I think he's really about a week or so off from being able to fly, so my hopes are not high.

121 I often see parents walking along with their kids, even holding hands. I have never had a child that would do that. They were all at least 15 ft in front of me barely tolerating my "catching" up. The only thing I ever hit them for (before they were teenagers) was going in the street. By 2 they were so well trained for that they would have died before they put toe to asphalt. I never felt bad about that--I figured I was saving their lives.

I still hold my 7 year old's hand in parking lots and such. My husband got annoyed with me and said something about how he's too old for that.

But I know the kid. If he's paying attention, he's fine. He just doesn't pay attention sometimes and will just start running in a random direction. He did that in a parking lot just a couple months ago.

Every time we go somewhere we talk about where we are in the parking lot, which was the cars are going, etc. so that he's learning. He's doing better than he was a few months ago and we should be fine in a couple more months.

136 I still hold my kid's hands too. I don't think they know the danger until they drive and see why it is that you have to be careful. 7 is definitely not too old. I made a deal with one of them that if they walked directly in front of me, about a foot or two, they could not hold my hand. That way I could verbally stop them and reach them if I had to. My brother (12 years older) always did that to me and it worked.

Even after the lawyer's cut, it's about two years of my gross salary. I hope this means he'll move out and I'll get the garage back. 159 You are correct Jimbo but you can mitigate the tax liability on punitive damages a couple of ways. Punitive damage awards are relatively rare.
