— Gabriel Malor Happy April.
Sarah Palin will co-host NBC's 'The Today Show' tomorrow, which puts her up against Katie Couric who's co-hosting ABC's 'Good Morning America.' Not an April Fools joke, apparently.
Also in Not-sure-he's-not-April-Foolin' news: Vice President Braindamaged says Gov. Romney is "a little out of touch" with the middle class. Just two weeks ago, he said the same thing about the GOP in general at a $5,000 per plate fundraiser.
DOOOOOOOM: Eurozone unemployment hits a record 10.8%, the highest it's been since the euro was introduced in 1999.
North Korea's month-old moratorium on missile testing is drawing to a close. Photos show preparations for the "satellite launch" that Pyongyang announced two weeks ago.

It's Recovery Summer all over again:
Records show stimulus money created few local jobs
Bucks CountyÂ’s allotment of $75 million in federal stimulus money has stimulated about 82 jobs in an average month over the last three years, according to records released by the federal government.
ThatÂ’s not a cumulative figure, since the jobs have been temporary. And despite Bucks County being home to 154 stimulus projects, only a few of them created even temporary work, according to records published online by the federal American Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board.
Most of the local stimulus allotment, $41 million, went to install traffic cameras and electronic message boards along I-95 in Bensalem and Middletown, according to ARATB. Area school districts received an estimated $23 million in stimulus funds to support education programs.

Santorum calls out pollster, pollster responds
Asked about the most recent Franklin & Marshall poll that showed his one-time lead in Pennsylvania nearly gone, former Sen. Rick Santorum attacked the pollster, professor G. Terry Madonna, as a “Democratic hack.”
Madonna, who runs Franklin & MarshallÂ’s Center for Politics and Public Affairs, said Santorum could not have been more wrong. Madonna said he has never conducted a poll for either a political party or any candidate.

Islamist group plants flag in Mali's Timbuktu
Residents said on Monday that the ominous black flag of an Islamist rebel faction is now flying over Mali's fabled city of Timbuktu, which over the weekend became the last major government stronghold in the country's north to fall to the rebel advance.
...
In Kidal and Gao, the Islamist faction took the lead early on, and shopkeepers reported that the rebels went from business to business telling merchants to take down pictures deemed un-Islamic. A hairdresser said he was made to take down the photographs he had put up showing different hairstyles because the images showed uncovered women.

Part of the "new normal"? Man gets capped through his window from across the street. Police claim it's from a "stray bullet":
Police: Stray bullets outside kill man in Pa. home
Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a man was killed by what appear to have been stray bullets that entered his home.
...
Reading Sgt. John Solecki says they found nothing, but police returned around noon after neighbors reported shell casings on the sidewalk.
Officers then found two bullets in the front window of a home on the other side of the street.
Inside the first-floor apartment, they found a 40-year-old man dead. His name has not been released pending notification of relatives.

I think Romney is out to get the John Kerry demographic:
On Energy Policy, Another Shift For Romney
...
Back in May of 2006, in the midst of another gas price shock, then-Gov. Romney came to a conclusion similar to Obama's. According to an account from the time in the Patriot Ledger newspaper, Romney objected to a temporary suspension of the state's gas tax, saying he'd rather press for more fuel-efficient vehicles.
The article has him saying, "I'm very much in favor of people recognizing that these high gasoline prices are probably here to stay."
A month later, on the Charlie Rose show, Romney said that the issue of the overuse of energy in our country is a "major issue" and in particular the overuse of oil.
"Look, if we could somehow magically wave a wand over our automobile fleet and replace all of our cars with the current best technology, 35 mpg-type technology, we'd be saving an extraordinary amount of oil," Romney said.
...
In 2004, Romney introduced the Massachusetts Climate Protection Plan. In more than 50 pages, it laid out emissions targets and what it described as a "no-regrets policy" toward climate change.
"This plan is going to reduce pollution. It's going to cut energy demand," Romney said at a press conference. "It's also going to nurture job growth and boost our economy. Because reducing greenhouse gasses has numerous benefits."

The truly sad thing here is that, until the MFM made it so, Zimmerman was not some Great Conservative Cause. He was just a guy who we (many of us) looked at and thought- "well, this could go either way. Let's not rush to judgement, but wait until the facts come out."
By pushing the "unarmed teen, gunned down by..." meme, Zimmerman forced 2nd A defenders and Conservatives more generally to dig into the facts in a way we might not have otherwise, and thus discover the more likely truth- that Zimmerman was, in fact, acting in self-defense.
To get their chose result, all the Media probably had to do was nothing. Instead, they pushed the issue and Conservatives pushed back.
This also serves as more good evidence of the waning influence of the Media.

I don't think so. I think too much is coming out to get him convicted. The people I think are screwed are the DA's office. Think about it- they're almost going to have to file charges, due to political pressure, and then they're almost certain (based on what we currently know) to lose in court (especially when the defense successfully gets the venue moved and the jurors sequestered).
Losing high-profile cases in court is toxic for a DA's career. Even if the DA would have preferred not to file charges in the first place.

These kids are definitely born that way. I think that there is either a birth component, more diagnoses being made, or an environmental component with the parents like excessive pot smoking that has increased the incidence. I just don't know if it could be genetic with the incidences rising so dramatically.
Posted by: dagny at April 02, 2012 05:17 AM (CMM9V)
Possibly- there's a slim chance it won't.
NBC really stepped in it with their deceptively edited 9-1-1 tape. And the other channel (ABC? CBS?) did the same thing with their deceptively edited video. Since George Zimmerman is not a "public figure," he should have good grounds for a defamation suit if the DA still refuses to file charges, or the grand jury refuses to indict. In either case, Zimmerman can say, "Even a cursory examination of the facts proves that I did not kill that poor boy out of malice, let alone out of racism. My life and reputation have been utterly destroyed by objectively defamatory practices. I demand a full retraction, and 17 gajillion dollars."
Even if he doesn't end up taking it to court, they'll probably settle, and he'll get at least some help in getting his financial house in order. Getting his reputation back will be a rather taller order.

At least part of it is greater sensitivity of diagnosis. My oldest brother has been told by his doctor (in the last 5 or 6 years) that if they'd seen him now when he was 4 or 5 years old, they probably would have diagnosed him on the autism spectrum (so light that it's almost not worth noting, but still). He also has dyslexia and dysgraphia.
My other brother and I suffer from none of those, and neither do my parents or (to my knowledge) my grandparents.
Part of me wonders if- like ADHD in the late 90's and early 2000's, Autism is becoming the "we don't understand why you misbehave" diagnosis du jor.

Agreed, but just how hard is it to prove "malice" in a case like this?
Posted by: Contemplative Lobster at April 02, 2012 05:24 AM (+rBDt)
My understanding is that it isn't. The author apparently talks about the damage "pure" charity (giving people something for nothing) is doing to urban families and such. He suggest, rather than just giving people food or clothes, that churches open thrift stores and sell the food or clothing for ridiculously low prices. Then you're still being charitable by getting food and clothes to those who otherwise couldn't afford it, but they still have to incur some cost to do so. It (he says) helps reduce the dependency and entitlement mentalities that "pure" charity can tend to create.
That's based entirely off Amazon reviews and the minute-and-a-half or so that my brother was telling me about it, though. I'm hoping one of the Moron's (or Ette's) has read it.
And I don't get on the computer on Sunday, so I can't ask the Sunday Book Thread.

Saying that Trayvon was "gunned down" by Zimmerman makes it sound like it was some sort of driveby situation. ....Zimmerman was on his back when he fired at Trayvon who was sitting on top of him. ....So if anything, it was more of a case of "gunned up".

Yeah the numbers are rising dramatically. It is alarming. I'd like to know if those dramatic rise in numbers is world wide or only in the West?
I think the rise is due to multiple factors, including better diagnosis, more disorders being lumped into the autism spectrum and, unfortunately, the urge to brand any odd behavior as a disorder. There's some really interesting discussions about how being an extrovert is considered the baseline and deviations towards being an introvert are deemed problematic.
Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at April 02, 2012 05:40 AM (VtjlW)
I like the rather more clinical "shot," or "killed." "Slain" if you want sensational. But you're right- "gunned down" sounds like "murder," which this wasn't, even if it is some kind of Manslaughter (which also, now, seems unlikely).

I want to stress that I truly believe there is something serious going on here with Autism. I'd love to see it clearly looked at. but you can't treat or cure it if you don't define it! And just growing the group via addition is not helping anyone (except charities/services that make money off this) Posted by: BlackOrchid at April 02, 2012 09:34 AM
It all comes down to the money. If you can grow the group, the "incidence of autism" rises dramatically, which funnels more money into the autism fields of service. Government grants, federal subsidies to schools, etc. It provides a bigger block for handouts, because orphan diagnoses rarely get targeted monies.

Sadly, yes. I find that many people don't want to face up to the fact their kid is a terror because of poor parenting, and so they look for something to 'explain' their child's behavior.
This has to be specially frustrating to the parents who really have kids with trouble (ADD & ADHD in the late 90's early 2000's, Autism today (at a guess)) because it muddies the water for research into actual causes and possible treatments/therapies.

His opening line is "I can tell just by looking that you have a disability." (I wear glasses). Then he's off to the races about his grandson's peanut allergy, and how proud of how regular public life gets disrupted to allow for his weaknesses, and on the fifth try, I have to claim that he does not want to hear about how there's a treatment to resolve that now. He does not want it cured; he's proud of it. It's a ticket to permanent-disability status. That kid will never need to work.
Regardless of whether bundle-of-symptoms syndromes are genuine or not, they are always developed exactly the same way by Democrat operatives. Panicky news bits, expand the definition to add a few million victims, grassroots concern clubs all pointed to more and more federal earmarks, bad and worse sciencey surveys all based on stats analysis and correlations, never morphology and pathology, culminating in another Department of Our National System Of.
They prey on natural sympathy, and Our National System Of going apeshit over every possible health concern, to convert any foible of life into ammunition for their war on, well, us.
Time for an experiment: choose just one hot new health peril, and define it as outside the purview of govt benefits, adding that parents and families of 'victims' will be sought out, registered, and required to provide proper care personally and with their own money. Keep the stopwatch running for how fast it disappears from the MSM and the concerned-volunteer supraculture. It is a Cloward-Piven corollary ,and we need to expose it.

until he sues NBC for that doctored tape.

--------------------
I would love a full weigh-in from all the J.D.s in the Moron Horde regarding the possibility thereof. Especially if there are stompy boots involved (ATC?!).
My take on suing NBC for the doctored tape (reminder, not your lawyer, not licensed in your jurisdiction, may cause drowsiness, etc.):
The NYT v. Sullivan standard requires actual malice (knowledge that the statement being made is false at the time the statement is made) or that the statement was made with reckless indifference to truth or falsity. The various cases interpreting this rule have placed the bar at a nearly impossible level to show malice/recklessness. In my (not so) humble opinion, NBC managed to cross that bar. In this case, you have an entity (NBC) that had in its possession the entire tape of an exchange. NBC had to take active steps to alter the tape (here via editing) to make it appear as if Zimmerman made an arguable racist comment. I cannot conceive of how NBC can argue that it did not know that the he looks black comment was in response to a specific inquiry by the 911 operator regarding the possible race of the person Zimmerman was observing. In this case, NBC itself altered the tape to create a false statement. I believe this is sufficient to get past a motion for judgment on the pleadings and probably a motion for summary judgment. As Insty says, the discovery on this would be fascinating.
As to damages, Zimmerman can easily show that he has been defamed since he is now branded a vigilante racist who gunned down an innocent skittles eating teen for no reason whatsoever. He was dismissed from the college he was attending (and there's another huge problematic area), I would presume he's had to move/is in hiding and I also presume he's having difficulties working. So he has both economic and non-economic damages.
Now, that's not saying he'd win the case or that he'd be awarded damages, just that this may be enough given that NBC had to actively edit the tape in order to get to a jury.
Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at April 02, 2012 06:01 AM (VtjlW)
And this is the problem with over-diagnosis. It does two things that hurt "real" autistic kids. 1) It makes it more difficult to find (if there is one) a root-cause for the disorder and treat or cure it. 2) It desensitizes the culture to the malady, even more so once they become aware that the "problem" was with over-diagnosis, and not actually some epidemic.

OK,
Let's hit these in random order.
First, Good Morning from the Midwest Horde! It's going to break 90 today apparently. If this is Global Warming, I love it. (Turkey season should be warm and dry in about 3 weeks.)
Re: Toxic Charity, the summary seems fairly accurate, I've argued (in other locations) that once you take Christianity's robust moral vision (I'm Catholic so I tend to argue specifically to that point) and break it up into tiny tiny pieces (I like to use the anology of a stained glass window) and grab only the biggest prettiest pieces that survive, you get a bunch of crap. So take the robust moral vision of a good person, focus solely on the "Social Justice" and ignore the "personal responsibility and betterment" and you get a franken-morality. Furthermore, it corrupts forward, so even if you try to reconstruct the full moral vision it's tained by the overfocus on specific areas. Virtuous Charity for example now becomes forced giving. My arguments for tying charity to improvement goals is often dismissed as "uncaring." On a related note, a friend of mine once said "I swift reading of the bible would suggest that Jesus was a socialist, this of course is the problem with speedreading, not with the bible." If only more people figured that out. Of course the book (based on summaries and reviews) seems to be taking a more practical tack to it. There's nothing wrong with that of course! There's other research on how the quick "In and out" charity trips (especially medical ones) cause more harm than good. A newer approach is to build a longstanding relationship with the community.
On Zimmerman and a Lawsuit. First I've started turning off my TV when this stuff comes on, I'll just wait for the Grand Jury report (and the ensuing riots.) Everything in between is so muddled. But on an NBC lawsuit. IANAL, but the commentors over at the Volokh conspiricy seem to think (from my reading) that the burden of proof against a new organization is fairly high, meaning the likelyhood of a successful lawsuit is small. The thread has decayed into an "Innocent or guilty" thread and I can't find that sub discussion anymore. There was certaintly disagreement though over the whole thing so it's not cut and dry. Especially over the definition of "public figure" and the maliciousness of the editing, but apparently the media has a wide swath for these types of things and provided they show the edits (with ellipses) it may scrape by.

I once had a professor whose kid was allergic to peanuts. I don't recall the conversation exactly but in any case, she had never heard of "banning peanuts" from school and (upon hearing about it from a student) insisted that if her school ever did that she'd withdraw her student. There was something she said after that about her kid being smart enough to know not to eat something without asking what was in it, and if she didn't she had a epi-pen and would learn a lesson.

Crazy-making quote:
>>“And let’s not forget how my husband appointed those two brilliant Supreme Court justices,” Obama said. And let’s not forget how, for the first time in history, our daughters and our sons watched three women take their seats on our nation’s highest court. And we are now feeling the impact of those court decisions and what effect that will have on our children’s lives for decades to come — on their privacy and security, on whether they can speak freely, worship openly, and, yes, love whomever they choose.”
Speak freely? Worship openly? WTF is she talking about?

@234 - Gracious, sweetie! I don't know how parents of kids with "true" autism do it - it is truly a devastating condition, and I'm sure it's heartbreaking to watch as the parent of a child with autism. (I also agree that money for Respite Care for parents of kids with autism is a GOOD thing).
Our kids have "true" ADD (which is a bear to diagnose in smart girls) - we didn't see it for many years, but once they started on medication, the improvement was immediate and radical.
However, ADD is NOT Autism, not on the "spectrum", not even in the same category, and anyone who says it should be on the ASD spectrum is doing a HUGE disservice to kids who have true Autism.
Our youngest has Down syndrome - thankfully, there's no way to put anyone on that "spectrum" unless they have a genetic karyotype to "prove" it.....

Acts of the Apostles was written by Luke (I think). That early church socialism is idolized. It didn't last.

263 I re-read the Gospels recently to answer the question "Is God a Socialist?"
If 'God is a socialist'....I don't think Mother Nature got the memo.
Even though there is some sharing that goes on within wolf packs, lion prides, etc......for the most part it is 'every criter for themselves' out there in Nature.
Posted by: wheatie at April 02, 2012 06:23 AM (+5U+B)
Yes, Acts was written by Luke, and he didn't exactly idolize the socialism- he just pointed it out. Beyond it being a fact of their lives, he didn't really editorialize on it at all.
But even then, and with Jesus, all such "socialism" was of a purely voluntary variety, and Jesus never tried to demonize the rich as such- simply point out the spiritual danger such people were in.
For the most "Conservative" perspective on it, though, read Paul. He really, really didn't like the socialistic tendencies of the early Church, and made no bones about saying things like "If a man won't work, he shouldn't eat," and " A worker is worth his wages."

My son has Down's Syndrome, with definitely autistic dendencies. From what I recall, no one has ever suggested a diagnosis of autism, but we spent the whole of his life treating him like a person, and dealing with his disabilities honestly.
We all have whatever challenges in our world that we do, and it's probably wise not to look around at others, trying to compare joys and sorrows. To say though, that my son has been one of the greatest joys of my time on this planet would be a severe understatement.

Reevaluation of prior diagnosis. We've had the autism discussion before and no one, at least that I recall, was stating that autism does not exist. The problem is that it's the trendy new diagnosis. It's also being used to justify a lot of assholish behavior. "Oh, sorry, it's my aspy's, not me, can't help it".
Allen's pointed out that the problem with overdiagnosis is that this dilutes the funds available to treat those who have legitimate problems and muddies the waters on research.
I am intrigued by the high level of those with true disorders, I'm thinking specifically of Asperger's, in the coding and math fields. I would love to know if there's some type of neurological process behind being highly skilled in one area and lacking in another.

Coincidentally, "autism" started getting overly broad meaning in conversational English and autism diagnoses just happened to skyrocket ... right after Rain Man came out and people started saying "autistic savant" instead of the phrase that had been in sole use up to then, "idiot savant". After that movie, the word "retarded" disappeared (not the pejorative, but the actual word) and was replaced in all instances by "autistic".

I don't think it was even that. The "Early Church's experiement" with semi-communisim seems limited to Jerusalem. I suspect it was forced on them, more or less, by their environment.
There were some who still had contacts and business interests outside the Christian Community, but many were branded blasphemers and heretics by the Jews (okay- all of them were- some just had contacts with the Romans and Greeks in Jerusalem). The Jews would have nothing to do with the Christians (for the most part) so their options for surviving were more limited.
Outside Jerusalem, things were a little more cosmopolitan, and the Christians relied on that internal charity less.

I'd suspect there probably is. I saw a TV special about a guy (not autistic or anything like that) who could do highly complex calculations in his head faster than a calculator, and an MRI showed that the part of his brain he used for math was located in an area associated with sight, which is highly unusual.
I know two people with synesthesia, one can hear colors and the other sees numbers in a range of colors. One of them happens to work at a research university so she's had multiple MRI studies and while the neurological link is clear, no one knows why it exists. There's some hope that if that link can be determined, it can be used to return functionality to those who have brain damage.

In a video produced by the MacIver Institute, organizers are seen arriving at a March 17 training session with the Wisconsin Education Association Council, Wisconsin's state teachers union.
Teachers' unions led last year's protests in Wisconsin against collective bargaining reforms, and are now heavily involved in the effort to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker. In addition to Alinskyite groups, the recall effort has attracted the support of radicals such as unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.
In a little-known speech to Wisconsin teachers last September, Ayers spoke of the need for "a new kind of education for a new kind of citizens that can make a new kind of society

Well the early Church still largely used teleology (e.g. virtue ethics/Aristotle) as their MO for morality. So again, it's hard to pick and choose which aspects of the total Telos one should follow. It's certainly communitarian, which is different than Collectivist. So people should work (and failing to achieve your full potential was a big no-no.) But we should band together to help those who simply can't. (I'm still oversimplifying here by a lot.) I'm good with this notion of charity actually, here's some help to get you moving but you have to eventually wean off it (or be really really bad off at a fundamental level.) Modern Catholicism especially (from my vantage point) misses that second half. It's too focused on the "social justice" aspect.
Even the synoptics didn't go as far down the rabbit hole as Modern Liberation theologians and such have gone.

I honestly think we had the benefit of there being no questions about my son's diagnosis or the severity of his mental retardation. I have to believe it's harder for parents to deal with teachers and therapists and all the assorted others, when there is no clear diagnosis, and/or mild disabilities. I have seen some of that with others, but our experience with the public school system was always very good.

This is true. And there's a lot of that in Paul's epistles as well. The biggest difference, probably, between my take, and those who claim "Jesus was a Socialist," is that I believe it all hinges on personal responsibility.
Widows and orphans (for instance) were supposed to receive "pure" charity, largely because they had no rights in Rome at the time, which meant they had no way (ethically) to make a living. In most cases.
And there's the rub. "In most cases." The reason the "Socialism" meme keeps rearing its ugly head is that it can ignore that "in most cases" point. It's "simpler," which means people can pay less attention. The more correct understanding of what was being done is much more nuanced and complex- so people don't want to hear it, let alone study it.

Maybe it just wasn't something Jews normally did- and so was a departure from their culture, or maybe it was something not frequently done by anyone. Possibly it's just the degree to which they did it. In any case, Luke seemed to think it was important enough to note.

Perhaps he thought it important only to explain their later difficulties when drought and famine hit the region.

They scoff at therapies developed in the US because they hate the US that much. As a result of this documentary, french psychs sued the film maker and tried to have the film suppressed.

360 She is an academic, basically. And I doubt seriously that she would accept the VP slot even if she were offered it.
I thought Condi has said that the only executive type position she wants is commissioner of the NFL.
Heh. Yeah, I remember that. ....It would be interesting to see how she would handle the union demands.

When ABC announced Couric would be subbing on GMA, audiences yawned. The Palin hating View watching couch potatoes will however rally to Katie and write hate mail to NBC.
Which is what they want. They'd love to bring Couric back

I hear the Oracle tended to miss House predictions by 30+ seats too.

Seems you don't come around here much when a poll shows bad news for your lord god Obama, Greg
If you really had confidence in him, you'd come here to tell us the bad polls don't worry you.

When the Greg types come here and essentially say "you people better not argue with me about the polls," it reminds me of Mr. Garrison, before he outed himself. Guys would get near him and he'd say "you better not try to have sex with me!"
Ummmm, yeah. No.

I said last week that I hope he's contacted F.I.R.E. about this since kollidges and universities are some of the biggest pusses when it comes to defending the rights of the accused against any organized interest groups.

The Beltway GOP knows how to attack Conservatives, but I'm not sure it knows how to attack liberals.
The only thing that could save Mittens is if the Banksters' Racket that elected Obama in 2008 decided that it needed a new Front Man, and decided to replace Chicago Jesus. They may have. Obama's fundraising is robust, but nowhere near the "billion dollar campaign" of legend.
Wall Street and the Economic War Criminal Lobby has abandoned Obama, clearly.
However, without Palin to drag him over the finish line, I'm not sure that Romney can close the deal. I'm hearing rumors about Condi Rice, though.

Gerg, I can't hear you over the sound of the 2010 mid-terms.
Thanks.
P.S.: The majority of the state of Wisconsin says "Hi."

This is a result of the Social Cons obsession with birth control. Obama has this election all locked up now. This country is screwed.

Until the GOP muzzles its Theocratic wing, they will not win another Presidential election. The GOP should go in a libertarian direction.
