2 We read about Harry Reid's love for junk mail yesterday, now read this Fox analyst's discussion of saving the Post Office.   What needs to happen is a bunch of branch offices like the one I talked about yesterday need to be closed.  That is simply not going to happen as long as congress has its finger in the pie.  The post office wanted to close 252 (which isn't enough) and the Senate cut that back to 125.  Before anyone thinks of this as no big deal, keep in mind that the tax payers are paying for ALL of this excessive number of useless jobs for political cronies of local politicians.  These excessive numbers of offices and a Cadillac retirement system is what is bankrupting the post office.   We have that because  congress is still controlling them, congress and the government unions that is.

3 Lawyers with their BS partial liability laws strike again.  Woman who was mauled by chimp now seeking $150M from Connecticut taxpayers instead of the people who allowed the chimp to roam free in their yard.  People, this shit has to end.  Liability laws are supposed to do two things, first restore the "harmed" individual and second discourage people from engaging in activities that would result in "harm" to other people.  When the taxpayer is the one who pays, there is no "discouragement".  And restoring the "harmed" individual is not supposed to be a financial bonanza for them and their shyster lawyer.   Partial liability in which the "deep pocket" party gets 100% of the liability regardless of the degree of fault is a crooked lawyer scam and needs to be eliminated.

I had an old early '70s model Chevy pickup truck.  No A/C, no power anything, and 3 speed on the column.  You could literally climb into the engine compartment to get to stuff. 

But boy was that thing a hog to drive.  I taught my daughter how to drive in that thing.  She would run off the dirt road we were on and ploy down scrub oaks.

That's dictated by having to put the core on the passenger side of the firewall, thermally isolating the core from the passengers and whatever electronics and electrical is running through the dash, and then sticking it where ducting runs can be optimized. I cannot think of an alternative that doesn't suck worse.

109 I wish I knew about working on cars.  Unfortunately, one of the few places my dad "failed" me was in that area.  He'd worked for Firestone replacing tires and working on brakes before my oldest brother was born, and the one thing he taught us about car maintenance: "It's always worth the money to have someone else do it."

As a result, I can change my own tires, fill the fluids when they get low, and replace an air filter.  That's about it.  I think I could figure out how to change my own oil.

If I did know better how to do it, I'd be sorely tempted to pick up an old junker to restore.

Me either. But working in Arkansas opened up a whole new world of BBQ for me. None of the thick sugary BBQ sauce stuff you see on store shelved. It was watery and served in those squirt ketchup bottles to put on the food after it was served. I guess they put something on the meat before they put it in the BBQ. The BBQ ribs were so dry they'd give you hiccups if didn't drink plenty of liquid with them.

I loved the ribs because they weren't greasy and the chicken was delicious. Every place in Blytheville had one of those BBQs that looked like they were made out of 55 gallon drums cut in half. You can't buy anything like it up here in the northeast.

From what I have been able to tell lately, ALL appliances suck. Go with the cheaper.  But better yet, see if you can get replacement racks.


If that isn't possible they used to make a rubber compound that electricians used for dipping tools in to insulate them.  It would harden up into a nice rubber coating. You may see if you can find some of that and put it on your existing rack.

141 Interesting what you find on Blogs.  For those who don't know, Scott Hanselman is decently big name in the computer programming world.  He runs a blog (scotthanselman.com).  As a software developer (in theory- current contract notwithstanding), I read his blog regularly.

But it's a totally different type of car so that's to be expected. I had a SRX prior to the meltdown and loved it.

Their power was used up in activities like making the doors fly open, and twisting the floorpan that was the only link between the front and rear subframes (until you put in the connector bars that the factory could have done for under $100). I tore a 67 Mustang in half with a Boss 302. With a big block, they drove like shit, since the frame deformed just from the weight of the engine. At least a small block pony car could be made to handle, with some work.

Now, a Barracuda with a 318, for instance, was just about a sports car. Cruise all day above 100 at 20 MPG.  Cornering was point-n-squirt.

I have the ultimate ease-of-maintenance truck: 1953 6X6 "Eager Beaver," Reo Gold Comet engine, built by Studebaker. You don't climb into the engine bay; you just duck under the wheelwell and stand up in there. And it will run underwater.

My dad had one in our '62 Impala that he hauled a trailer, four kids, a wife and a dog from PA to Alaska. And in those days the AlCan highway was 3,000 miles of the worst kind of dirt road. It was best suited for a deuce and a half.

Once we got to AK my dad would race the B-52s as they took off from Eielson. He'd keep up with them until they started to lift off. The engine refused to run well on anything but premium. But it could really make that Impala go.

Well, the main problem with appliances is reliability and they just ignore that and rate on features.

 

I just bought an above-the-range microwave, which you really don't want to have to get repaired all the time. All the reviews of all of them were terrible, but I finally found one that seemed better. The bad reviews were from people who complained their popcorn was burning and apparently couldn't figure out to cook it at 80 or 90 % of full power.

That sucks, Allen.  We just learned earlier this week a friend who lived here with her family and moved to VA died after being diagnosed in October.  They have no idea where the cancer originated, but it had spread everywhere.  She was 50, the oldest kid is about to graduate from college and the youngest is in middle school.

The taking of a human life only becomes criminal homicide if it is committed intentionally and without justification. And throughout the United States, “…self-defense, including the use of deadly force in self-protection, [is recognized] as a justification defense.”

Killing without justification is murder. Killing with the justification of self-defense is not. All George Zimmerman and Americans interested in justice can hope for is a jury of 12 honest people, unafraid to do the right thing.

Too much prep work for me but its hard to argue with the results. Try the "Butter Bombed Porthouse". It's one of the simpler recipes, one of the best steaks you'll ever eat, and it'll give you an idea if his approach is your kinda thang.

He said Obama has never called him or sought a one-on-one conversation.

You can get a code reader or reader/writer or OBDCII <-> PC tuning sw.  With just a code and swapping parts a lot of small things can be fixed DIY.  There really isn't a lot of tuning to do as most of the mileage/HP is already squeezed out by the computer under most circumstances.

You'd think a guy who could restore a car (or have it done for him, more likely) would know that "premium" is just a label for a specially formulated gasoline for a specific purpose. There's a common misconception that "premium" is better gas, or that higher octane results in burning faster, or hotter, or more powerfully, or better in some intangible way.

The octane rating doesn't have dick to do with power the fuel delivers, in fact every grade contains about the same potential for heat energy.

Higher octane rating reduces the tendency for your engine to knock or ping. Knocking is  when part of the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder burn prematurely because of compression (which causes heat, sometimes hot enough to fire the gas) instead of combustion by the spark plug, throwing off the engine's timing.  High-octane gas is formulated to burn slower than regular, making it less likely to ignite without benefit of spark.

Using premium doesn't make your car better, or the fact that it NEEDS premium doesn't make it better.

And using high-octane gas in a car designed for regular, btw, is a waste of money - some people claim that better mileage or more power, but those people are fools. I've heard claims premium is a "higher grade" or contains detergents that will cleanse your engine. Wrong again: government regulations require detergents in all grades of gasoline.  In fact, using premium in a car that takes regular will cause deposits on the back side of the intake valves. Slower-burning high-octane gas produces LESS power when used incorrectly.

 Believe what you like; the point is, don't assume "premium" means "better."

I don't think ordering "on-line" is legal here in SC.  They have some strange and strict laws here.  I am sure they would consider it boot-legging when no SC tax is paid on it. And SC liquor tax is high.


I am considering getting the corner store where I do buisness to order some for me.  Also, wifey and MIL make regular trips to Myrtle Beach and there is a big COSCO liquor store there. I will have her check on some there.  I am out in the boonies here and Myrtle Beach is now the "metropolis"for SC.
